The Right Reverend Rose Hudson-Wilkin, the Bishop of Dover, is a trailblazer, who has been right at the heart of a changing nation for over 40 years. Despite discrimination due to her gender and ethnic minority background, Bishop Rose has never wavered from the call she received to enter ministry at the age of 14. She joined Nuala McGovern to discuss her memoir, The Girl from Montego Bay.A Royal College of Nursing report, On the Frontline of the UK's Corridor Care Crisis, which came out this week, found that the situation in A&E is the worst it has ever been and that a lack of hospital beds means corridor care has been "normalised". One nurse described caring for a 95-year-old woman dying with dementia who had spent eight hours lying on a trolley in a crowded corridor next to a drunk person who was vomiting and being abusive. Others describe women having a miscarriage in side rooms. Professor Nicola Ranger, Chief Executive of the Royal College of Nursing joined Anita Rani to discuss what is going on.Holly Bourne, bestselling author of How Do You Like Me Now? and the Spinster Club series, is back with So Thrilled For You, her most personal novel yet. It's a story about four friends navigating motherhood, career ambition, and societal pressures, all unfolding during a sweltering summer's day at a baby shower. Holly joined Nuala and explained what inspired this book. Can AI improve the success rates of women undergoing fertility treatment? Anita discusses the impact of AI on IVF with Dr Cristina Hickman, an embryologist, co-founder of Avenues, and Chair of the Global AI Fertility Society, and Dr Ali Abbara, a Clinician Scientist at Imperial College London, and Consultant in Reproductive Endocrinology at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.Hermine Braunsteiner was the first person to be extradited from the US for Nazi war crimes. She was one of a few thousand women who had worked as a concentration camp guard and was nicknamed ‘the Mare' by prisoners because of her cruelty; she kicked people to death. In 1964, Hermine's past was unknown: She was living a quiet existence as an adoring suburban housewife in Queens, New York when she was tracked down by a reporter from The New York Times who exposed her past. Angharad Hampshire, a Research Fellow at York St John University, joined Nuala to talk about The Mare, her novel based on Hermine's life. The all-female, Welsh-language, post-punk trio Adwaith are the only band to have won the Welsh Music Prize twice, for their first two albums. My guest today is the brilliant author Holly Bourne (recorded in 2021) who started her writing career as a news journalist, where she was nominated for Best Print Journalist of the Year. She then spent six years working as an editor, a relationship advisor, and general 'agony aunt' for a youth charity - helping young people with their relationships and mental health. (TW: This episode discusses rape and sexual assault.)Inspired by what she saw helping young people, she started writing teen fiction, including the best-selling award-winning 'Spinster Club' series which helps educate teenagers about feminism. When she turned 30, Holly wrote her first adult novel How Do You Like Me Now?, examining the intensified pressures on women once they hit that landmark age, and the book became a Sunday Times bestseller. She now has her second adult fiction book out called Pretending. In one review of Pretending a reader says: "the book deals with trauma and sexual violence, there is also heart and humour throughout the pages". I feel like this sums up a lot of Holly's work - dealing with tough subjects through a lighter touch that makes her stories feel more accessible and real.I hope you enjoy this episode and if you did please leave a lovely rating or review.Read Holly's books: https://uk.bookshop.org/contributors/holly-bourneMy Substack page, come and say hi: https://thehyphen.substack.com/My books: https://uk.bookshop.org/contributors/emma-gannonBooks mentioned on Ctrl Alt Delete podcast: https://uk.bookshop.org/lists/books-mentioned-on-ctrl-alt-delete-podcastTwitter: Twitter.com/emmagannonInstagram: Instagram.com/emmagannonuk Hosted on Acast. After beginning her novel-writing career in the young adult genre, Holly has released three brilliant titles for adults over the past few years, which are full of wise reflections on relationships, navigating social pressure and recovering from trauma. She's influenced, in part, by the five years she spent working as an online agony aunt for a youth charity, specialising in relationships and mental health, and her present role as the youth ambassador for Women's Aid. Her honest, empathetic writing has made me, and so many other that I know, feel less alone – saying that, I can't wait to see what she has to say about alone time, and what it means to her. We discuss, among other things: Why her heroines' 'happy endings' always involve them finding a greater degree of love for themselvesHow Holly learnt to enjoy taking herself out for dinnerHow female friendship can offer a 'safe space' away from the male gazeThe challenge of adjusting to a new relationship after being happily-single for a periodYou can order Holly's latest book, Girlfriends, now on Bookshop.org.You can also order my book, Alonement: How To Be Alone and Absolutely Own It, which is based on this very podcast, now from Amazon and Waterstones. Strictly judge Motsi Mabuse on her autobiography, 'Finding my Own Rhythm', from a young dancer in apartheid era South Africa to renowned Latin dance champion and TV star. Liz Truss is the UK's new Prime Minister. What will be her priorities? Which women will she promote in her first reshuffle?, What will her leadership style be? We hear from Katy Balls the Deputy Editor of The Spectator and to Hannah Al Othma from The Sunday Times. With inflation running at over ten per cent, it's understood that Liz Truss – who becomes Prime Minister later today – is considering a freeze on energy bills as one of her first acts in office. The Women's Budget Group argue that women are less prepared to face cost of living rises, due to lower wages and savings, and in particular they are concerned about job losses for women working in small businesses which could result from increasing fuel costs. Women make up the bulk of those working in the hospitality, retail and care sectors. Sara Reis is the Deputy Director at the Women's Budget Group and joins Jess to discuss their latest report. A novel out this week called Girl Friends by Holly Bourne explores many of these issues. This is her third novel for adults but Holly Bourne is best known as a Young Adult author. Her books including ‘Am I Normal Yet' and ‘The Manifesto On How To Be Interesting' are loved by older girls and teenagers – they get into relationships, mental health and happiness. The strength and importance of female friendship is central to all her books. Holly Bourne writes fiction for teenagers and adults and female friendship is central to her books. In her new adult novel Girl Friends Jess and Fern are millennials whose passionate closeness as teens is central to both of their lives until things fall apart. When they meet more than 10 years later they are forced to reassess their friendship and how it was shaped by the sexual politics of the time they grew up in. There is something about Holly. If you look through the online reviews you'll see comments like _‘there were times I felt Holly had climbed into my head' and ‘I cried so much reading this_'. Her writing has the gift to connect to the reader – we explore this in the interview from her first book written on a 45 min commute, to overcoming imposter syndrome, why she thinks a writer should spend only 33% of their time writing and how writing fiction is the act of destroying the perfect idea you have in your head. Holly also talks us through her ideation process, how she uses psychology to get into her characters' heads and her approach to marketing her work.  *Holly Bourne has written 12 books over 7 years. She started her writing career as a news journalist, but after working with young people, was inspired to write teen fiction and won awards for her best-selling, award-winning ‘Spinster Club' series. When she turned thirty, Holly wrote her first adult novel, How Do You Like Me Now about the intensified pressures on women once they hit that landmark. Her latest book Pretending has garnered praise from book reviewers, bloggers and authors Marian Keyes, and Dolly Alderton. Four of her books have now been optioned for film and TV.Alongside her writing, Holly has a keen interest in women's rights and is an advocate for reducing the stigma of mental health problems. She is an ambassador for Women's Aid and their Love Respect campaign, educating young people about healthy relationships.*SHOW NOTES[02:18] Holly talks about her writing process and her coping mechanisms during lockdown[04:23] How to be kind to yourself while writing in lockdown[06:20] Having a hobby and doing other things apart from writing [09:49] Holly's journey from having a full-time job to becoming an author, and how she wrote her first book while commuting to work.[13:18] How to overcome your imposter syndrome[17:08] Why you should only spend 33% of your time writing[18:37] Why the first draft is just like digging up a fossil[20:02] How psychology helps in Holly's writing[22:36] How writing fiction is the act of destroying a perfect idea in your head[24:43] Holly's writing process, the need to have the first line, and doing extensive research before the actual writing[29:56] On being authentic with yourself and asking the hard questions[34:55] Holly talks about marketing her writing and doing promotions*QUOTES BY HOLLY“Writing fiction is the act of destroying a perfect idea in your head…lots of people in this room have had that moment where they have this idea for a story or a character or a poem, screenplay, and they're so excited, and the temptation is to just leave it at that as this perfect unformed... once you start writing, it will never live up to the hype in your head. And then you might get a different idea or you might get bored of it, or you start having plot problems or characters...So it's accepting the fact that you're going to completely ruin the best idea you ever had. But if you were that excited to begin with—if you were just buzzing when that idea land is, you've got to know that in the translation from head to work, there'll be enough of that. There will. I think I have around 30 pages left, but so far, the story reminded me of several instances from my much younger years about issues related to emotional manipulation and other red flags that almost overstep my personal boundaries. So, for this week's episode, we'll tackle relationship red flags and boundaries. There is no perfect time to discuss this, so we might as well dive into it. I also touch upon the kinds of boundaries as shared by The Holistic Psychologist. In this conversation, there is no one excluded. We all need to set boundaries in order to have healthy relationships.Just a side note, I was so immersed in passionate discussion I got slightly emotional somewhere in the middle. This episode is also available on video .

So strange that I didn't think I could post a regular episode - so instead, here is the first Sunday Salon isolation special, one of several dedicated #togetherapart episodes I will be bringing you to - I hope - offer a balm for the soul over the coming weeks. I'm so grateful to the authors Holly Bourne and Laura Freeman for coming on the podcast (remotely) at short notice to offer their advice on coping with anxiety and our new way of living. Both have written extensively about mental health before - and their contributions were super-helpful, taking in everything from the power of having a "worry window" (a sanctioned time to worry about everything you're anxious about), to why now is probably NOT the moment to embark upon a massive, ambitious work or self improvement project (whatever Instagram is leading you to believe) and how it is totally ok to feel down and to allow yourself to wallow at times. They also have some fabulous, uplifting reading recommendations. Holly is the author of the best-selling How Do You Like Me Now, as well as the brilliant new novel Pretending which has been described by none other than Marian Keyes as "magnificent". She started her writing career as a news journalist, where she was nominated for Best Print Journalist of the Year. She then spent six years working as an editor, a relationship advisor, and general 'agony aunt' for a youth charity - helping young people with their relationships and mental health. When she turned thirty, Holly wrote her first adult novel, How Do You Like Me Now, examining the intensified pressures on women once they hit that landmark. Alongside her writing, Holly has a keen interest in women's rights and is an advocate for reducing the stigma of mental health problems. She's helped create online apps that teach young people about sexual consent and is an ambassador for Women's Aid. Margaret Atwood's new novel is out today. It's science fiction and is called The Testaments. Science fiction is often stereotyped as a male genre, but we forget that a woman was one of its first authors: Mary Shelley who wrote Frankenstein. When it comes to recognising science fiction talent, male authors have got many more awards than women but that's changing. To discuss why science fiction really does appeal to women, we hear from Mary Robinette Kowal who's won this year’s Hugo Award for best science fiction, as well as British writer, Temi Oh. Teenage girls are getting advice about what’s a healthy relationship and what’s not. The young adult author, Holly Bourne, is the ambassador for a new campaign launched by Women’s Aid. Holly says, “When you’re crazy in love with someone it’s hard to know what’s OK and what’s not OK in a relationship.” The campaign talks about gas lighting, consent and gives advice about what to say if your partner asks for your social media passwords. The answer is: NO! What’s the link between feeling discriminated against because you’re a woman and depression? Dr Ruth Hackett from University College London explains. And our series called My Best Day. You sent us some pictures of when you looked and felt great. Today Nilufer Algas tells the story behind her snap from the eighties.

Fresh, funny and witty, Thirty shines an honest, often awkward, often hilarious, but ultimately wonderful fresh light on what it truly means to be single, when everyone else (according to their social media accounts) seemingly has it all. Perfect for fans of Sophie Kinsella, Holly Bourne, Lucy Vine and Hannah Doyle. Thirty days till she turns 30...Just 30 dates to find The One... Bella Edwards is a hot mess. Days away from turning 30, single, struggling to reconcile where she is with where she imagined she'd be by this point in her life, she has come to believe her entire future happiness is based on meeting 'The One'. After an unfortunate meeting with a fortune teller, where it seems Bella's single fate is sealed, she sets off on a journey from London to New York, and then on a road trip across America to San Francisco, all with one clear objective - to find The One and prove the fortune teller wrong. What ensues is a raucous adventure of dating, love - and self-discovery.

The Sunday Salon with Alice-Azania Jarvis

Her best-selling book How Do You Like Me Now? was both wildly funny and brilliantly perceptive – and I can confirm that Holly Bourne is both of these things, not to mention clever, kind and wise. We talk about everything from the surreal pressure society puts on 30-something women, to conquering stage fright (Holly used to get so nervous before public speaking that she would be sick) and why she started rationing her news intake in 2016. She also reveals how she comes up with her ideas – a process she calls “literary cystitis” – and why she was tempted to have “THIS IS NOT A MEMOIR” tattooed on to her head after the release of How Do You Like Me Now. And we talk about why she feels a responsibility to tackle subjects such as mental health, emotional abuse and feminism in her work. Finally Holly, who is also the author of nine young adult novels, as well as an official champion for SANE mental health charity, reveals the single most important piece of advice she would give any aspiring writer. Welcome to the first ever episode of The Sunday Salon with Alice-Azania Jarvis. Edited by Chelsey Moore

We discuss Holly Bourne, a British author whose books Ben has constantly been lending to Becky for the past few years. Bourne writes about feminism, mental illness, and relationships—both healthy and unhealthy. Her YA series Spinster Club follows three young women as they struggle with these things. Her adult novel, How Do You Like Me Now?, is about a woman on the brink of 30 still struggling with similar things. We break down our thoughts on these books, why we love them so much, and which parts we could most relate to. You can read Ben’s reviews of Am I Normal Yet? (with links to the subsequent books) and How Do You Like Me Now? on Goodreads. You can also read the episode transcript.

The Sunday Salon with Alice-Azania Jarvis

The Sunday Salon is a podcast celebrating brilliant books and the women who write them, hosted by journalist Alice-Azania Jarvis. Each week she chats to an inspiring female author about her work, her career, how she writes, what she reads and everything in between. This is not some academic textual analysis – it's about finding the stories behind the stories, and celebrating the joy that books bring, no matter what genre, or style. Tune in each Sunday to hear from guests including How Do You Like Me Now author Holly Bourne, Ordinary People's Diana Evans, The Reading Cure's Laura Freeman, and Nell Stevens, author of Mrs Gaskell and Me.
