Howard Chaykin is, by far, one of the most direct and outspoken people in comics and that's why he's one of Todd's favorites. As a creator/writer/artist, Howard's work on American Flagg, Black Kiss, and Hey, Kids! Comics! has given him the platforms on which to voice his opinions in a smart and entertaining way. On the same night Todd met Howard, they were later dumped into the trunk of an SUV and transported to an unknown location for drinks.

Perhaps best known for American Flagg! at First Comics, artist Howard Chaykin broke into comics under the tutelage of three masters: Gil Kane, Wally Wood, and Neal Adams. He only dabbled in the world of superheroes, preferring instead more less costumed genres, like sci-fi, horror, and adventure. His most mainstream work includes the first ten issues of the adaptation of Star Wars, the World of Krypton miniseries, and a run on Micronauts. Aside from dozens of issues of American Flagg!, Howard also took on such classic characters as The Shadow and Blackhawks, as well as his own stories, such as Time[squared] and Black Kiss. He started mixing in television and film projects, including Mutant X and The Flash. And then there's a ton of other comics credits we're not going to get to.

Too often, Black history is portrayed as a story of struggle and suffering, completely devoid of joy. So we called up some romance novelists whose work focuses on Black history. They told us that no matter how hard the times, there has always been room for love.

It's the beginning of the month, which means it's time for Andy and Derek to flip through the latest Previews catalog. In this issue, they highlight a variety of books and comic-book series that will be coming out later this year, including new titles from Dark Horse (The Goon: Occasion of Revenge #1, Red Moon, and Sally Heathcote, Suffragette), DC/Vertigo (Bodies #1 and Trillium TP), Image (Low #1, Supreme: Blue Rose #1, Black Kiss 2: XXXmas in July Special, and Murder Me Dead), Adhouse Books (Youth Is Wasted), BOOM! Studios (Black Market #1), Dynamite Entertainment (The Devilers #1), Drawn and Quarterly (Benson's Cuckoos), Fantagraphics (The Hip Hop Family Tree, Vol. 2, DKW: Ditko, Kirby, Wood, Jim, and Luba and Her Family), First Second (The Shadow Hero), Hill and Wang (Not the Israel My Parents Promised Me TP), and Knockabout Comics (Beatles with an A: The Birth of a Band). Among the highlights from this episode, you will hear: Derek's frustration at not getting his copy of Previews in time, and thus, having to rely on a crappy text file; Andy renewing his ongoing resistance to anything with “steam” in the title; Fantasies about killing clowns; More gripes about series numbering and the shenanigans of Marvel; Derek going negative on Vertigo's new attempt at an anthology, and then Andy advising Derek to readjust his expectations on anthologies.  This this a fun episode? Of course it is! And it's the kind of good quality podcasting you've come to expect from The Two Guys with PhDs Talking about Comics™.

What a pleasure talking to the man behind great satire and action like American Flagg, Time 2, The Shadow, The Blackhawks, and Cody Starbuck .You'll hear about his current projects like BITE CLUB, BLADE, GUY GARDNER, JLA CLASSIFIED, along with a look back at his work on STAR WARS , BLACK KISS, AMERICAN CENTURY , his television work on THE FLASH, VIPER, and MUTANT X .We'll discuss Chaykin's view of Televison, from the shows he loves to what Hollywood is looking for from writers these days. Between us, we'll throw in enough obscure ancient pop culture references that would make Dennis Miller call his grandfather to confirm. As a lifelong fan of his writing and art, Howard is my kind of people.
