In 2009, a Pennsylvania high school accused sophomore Blake Robbins of dealing drugs—based on a photo secretly taken through his school-issued laptop. The image, captured without his knowledge in his own bedroom, turned out to show candy. But the real story wasn't about what was in his hand—it was about how the school got the photo in the first place. In this episode, we speak with filmmaker Jody McVeigh-Schultz, creator of SPY HIGH, and Blake himself, about surveillance, bias, and what happens when institutions cross the line between protecting kids and controlling them. Ronnie chose Stevens over other trucking companies because of his father's recommendation and the company's reputation in the industry. Ronnie appreciates the family-like culture at Stevens Transport, where drivers support and bond with each other, even though they spend most of their time on the road. Stevens Family Spotlight - Driver Reneal Young Reneal Young grew up in Compton, California, has been fascinated by trucking since he was a young boy. From an early age, Reneal dreamed of building his own business and owning a fleet of trucks that could help him create the life he had always envisioned for his children. Reneal's grandfather, a truck driver, inspired Reneal to follow in his footsteps. Reneal enrolled in the Stevens Driving Academy, where he eventually obtained his CDL and started the path to his dreams of owning his own fleet! Trucking Song: Asphalt Cowboy - Jason Aldean Today's truckers have a lot in common with our Cowboy ancestors. The rough, grueling lifestyle of wrangling hauls isn't for the faint of heart. The solitude of the open trail is a kin to the now, open road. It speaks to the freedom to do as you please. You don't really hear that many songs about trucking nowadays. The heyday for trucking songs seemed to be the 70s, when everyone wanted to write a song, create a movie or chatter on the CB radio. There are precious few in music today keeping an eye on truck drivers. So, today we are gonna fire up a song from Jason Aldean, this is Asphalt Cowboy. Hosts Mitch Lasky and Blake Robbins discuss the rise of free-to-play as a dominant business model for video game marketing and distribution. They look at the roots of free-to-play in the shareware business, where companies like id Software and Apogee used it to build independent game businesses. Mitch shares some stories about his time as id's publisher in the late 90's. They then look at free-to-play as a response to rampant PC software piracy, primarily in Asia, and how Korean giant Nexon invented the modern internet free-to-play model with games like Maple Story and particularly Kart Rider. They conclude by tracing free-to-play back to the West, first in the casual games space and later with companies like Riot Games (League of Legends) and Epic (Fortnite). Mitch talks about his early investment in a pre-product Riot, and how they used free-to-play to become one of the most valuable games companies in the world. Erik is joined on this episode by John Robinson (@RohnJobinson), president and COO of 100 Thieves, and Blake Robbins (@blakeir), partner at Ludlow Ventures.Blake and John talk about how they got into eSports and what excites them most about the space. They run through some of the unicorns in eSports and the venture firms that saw their potential early. They also discuss how big companies like Amazon, Google, Apple, and Facebook are or are not getting involved in the space. The three of them compare and contrast traditional sports leagues, athletes, brands and teams with those in eSports and talk about how the revenue streams differ in eSports versus those of traditional sports. They talk about the applicability of a single team like 100 Thieves across a bunch of different games, comparing it to having a Yankees team in every sport, instead of just baseball. They mention that contrary to traditional sports, there is something to watch 365 days of the year for fans of an eSports team. They also say that the space is getting more attention as billionaires notice their kids are more excited to meet Ninja (a high-profile gamer) than Michael Jordan or LeBron James. They finish with some of their requests for startups in the space and Erik asks what they think the future holds for eSports. Thanks for listening — if you like what you hear, please review us on your favorite podcast platform.
