Ravage & Son (Bellevue Literary Press, 2023) by Jerome Charyn is a novel set in the Lower East Side of New York City in the early years of the twentieth century when it was America's most crime-ridden and decadent neighborhood. Featuring an alluring cast of heroes, misfits, and monsters, Ravage & Son is part Jekyll and Hyde, part crime noir, part mystery novel, and ultimately an instant classic – a cinematic kaleidoscope that captures both the intense beauty and utter debauchery of humanity in this bygone era. At the heart of the novel is the menacing Lionel Ravage, a heartbroken powerbroker hell bent on making the world pay for the loss of his soul mate, and his illegitimate son Ben, a poor boy educated at Harvard who becomes a downtown detective for the Kehilla, a quasi-police force slapped with the responsibility of cleaning up the Lower East Side's layers of dirt and crime. The younger Ravage fights to protect, while his father yearns to burn it all to the ground. They share a deep wound and savage love that chains them together but is too agonizing to relive. Jerome Charyn's brilliance is in capturing the violence festering behind closed doors and in the streets as forces large and small work in unity to suck the marrow out of the Jewish neighborhood and its inhabitants. The author's magnificent sentence-by-sentence style is marked both by an intensity and sensitivity that makes the dark tale more human and humane. It is as if Charyn is at war with the past, fully committed to its darkness, but delivering a source of light through his unmatched voice, the essential narrative delivered in what he calls his “music.” With touches of magical realism and an aura of mysticism, Charyn turns the Lower East Side into a portal for looking at that era and our own. The author of more than 50 novels, biographies, histories, graphic novels, and collections, Charyn once proclaimed that his ultimate goal in writing novels has been “to make the reader cry...to break the reader's heart.” With its stunning, unforgettable portrayal of the forces of light and darkness, Ravage & Son delivers on the author's aim, presenting humanity in its fully formed depravity, but also capturing life's poignancy. The interview focuses on Ravage & Son, but Charyn and I discuss other aspects of his renowned career, including discussion of writing style, research, literary influences, and more. Charyn is arguably the most famous writer most readers have never heard of, a bestseller in France and other parts of Europe, and a true “writer's writer” who continues to publish acclaimed books while being lauded by major authors including Joyce Carol Oates, Michael Chabon, Don DeLillo, and a long list of others. He is a distinctive voice in American literary history. Bob Batchelor is an award-winning cultural historian and biographer. Jesse Kavadlo is the classic “renaissance man” – literature and humanities professor, author of acclaimed books and articles, President of the Don DeLillo Society, fantastic husband and father…AND self-taught guitarist and vocalist with Top Gunz, one of the most popular 1980s rock cover bands in America. In this Deep Cuts conversation, Jesse and Bob discuss his guitar-saturated youth and the circuitous path he later took to the university classroom. They regale in their shared Gen X roots and how that past still informs them today, as well as a variety of pop culture topics, from grunge's almost overnight takedown of hair metal to professors and tweed jackets (and spandex). At the heart of this Deep Cut episode is Jesse's guitar playing and singing as a lens to uncover the ways a new generation of young people are discovering classic rock, particularly the Doors (the subject of Bob's book Roadhouse Blues: Morrison, the Doors, and the Death Days of the Sixties, published by Hamilcar Publications). A highlight is Jesse's demonstration of the subtlety and beauty of Doors guitarist Robby Krieger versus the styles of soloists like Jimmy Page, Jimi Hendrix and Eddie Van Halen. The surprising history of how kale became so popular so quickly back in 2014, and how both Pizza Hut and Chick-fil-A were partially responsible––but not because they actually included kale on their menus. It's a tale of lawsuits, publicity campaigns, bloated markets, and one very big kalespiracy.Sponsors:BetterHelp, Get 10% off your first month at betterhelp.com/COOLSTUFFKolide, Got Slack? Got Macs? September 9, 2019 - Bob Batchelor introduces us to the boisterous, brass-knuckes bootlegger who quenched Dry America's thirst in the Roaring Twenties. His book is The Bourbon King: The Life and Crimes of George Remus, Prohibition’s Evil Genius. We last caught up with Bob to chat about his book Stan Lee: The Man behind Marvel. You can find that interview in our archives at iHeartRadio, iTunes or wherever you listen to on-demand audio. In an era that featured names like Capone, Rothstein, Luciano, and Nucky Thompson of Boardwalk Empire fame, Remus broke the mold. A talented lawyer, pharmacist, and social-climbing doctor obsessed over his wife's affair with a G-man, he grew so powerful, he even had President Warren G. Harding in his pocket. Bob Batchelor is a cultural historian who has written or edited more than two dozen books on popular culture and American literature, including books about John Updike, The Great Gatsby, and Mad Men. He lives in the Queen City of Cincinnati, Ohio, and teaches at Miami University. Visit him at BobBatchelor.com or @CultPopCulture on Twitter.
Love, murder, political intrigue, mountains of cash and rivers of bourbon—Bob Batchelor’s book The Bourbon King: The Life and Crimes of George Remus, Prohibition's Evil Genius is a journey into the dark heart of Prohibition and the man who made it work to his own advantage. Yes, Congress gave teeth to Prohibition in October 1919, but the law didn't stop Remus from amassing a fortune that would be worth billions of dollars today. As one Jazz Age journalist put it, "Remus was to bootlegging what Rockefeller was to oil." Join us for a discussion of Goerge Remus with Bob Batchelor in this installment on Leonard Lopate at Large.

Człowiek-Marvel", w interpretacji audio pana Tomasza Sobczaka, kupicie oczywiście w sklepie Audioteka.pl
In his new book, Stan Lee: The Man Behind Marvel (Rowman and Littlefield, 2017), cultural historian and biographer Bob Batchelor examines the life of Marvel’s Stan Lee one of the most iconic figures in comic book history. Batchelor has written the first biography of Stan Lee. Starting with his childhood as a Depression-era New Yorker born to immigrant parents, Batchelor follows Lee’s career as a teenage editor at Marvel Comics, his stint as a playwright for the United States Army during World War II, and his unrelenting work ethic and drive that transformed the comic book industry and brought characters such as Spider Man, the Hulk, Iron Man, the Fantastic Four, the Avengers, and the X-Men to life. Batchelor explores the larger place in popular and American cultural history that Stan Lee has played over the past 70 years from comics to television to film, reflecting on the role of the superhero in the American experience. Well researched, Stan Lee: The Man Behind Marvel gives insight not only into well-known aspects of Lee’s life, but also presents readers with little known background into Lee’s past and what has made him the icon he is today. Batchelor’s book is a must read for Marvel and comic books fans. Rebekah Buchanan is an Associate Professor of English at Western Illinois University. Her work examines the role of narrative in people’s lives. She researches zines, zine writers and the influence of music subcultures and fandom on writers and narratives.
