Former jockey and lead data analyst for RaceIQ, Page Fuller, joins Emmet Kennedy to break down the key performances from Champions Day at Ascot. Highlights include Kyprios securing seventh heaven as the undisputed King of the Stayers after an unbeaten season, and Kind Of Blue becoming the third member of his family to win the Champions Sprint for legendary trainer James Fanshawe. Also on today's show, news on Goffs Orby sale while Guy O'Callaghan from Grangemore Stud looks ahead to selling Charyn at Tattersalls Book One next week. Plus, Charlotte gets the NTF reaction to the proposed commercial agreements from CEO Paul Johnson, while Tom talks to Racing Foundation Conference keynote Bob Langert about tackling negative perception of the sport, and Nick catches up with James Harron, the Aus-based agent who has just sold this year's Everest slot. Emmet Kennedy and trainer Sarah Lynam share their thoughts on the weekend's action as Ger Lyons unveils another star in Babouche, who beat the odds-on favorite Whistlejacket in the Phoenix Stakes. But what's next for both of them, and how will they fare as three-year-olds? Sarah is keen to see one stay sprinting and explains why the other needs further. Aidan O'Brien has an incredible team of juvenile fillies, but where does Lake Victoria rank among Fairy Godmother and Bedtime Story? Plus, Sarah names exciting two-year-olds to watch out for. Charyn wins back-to-back Group 1s for Roger Varian. He's heading to Ascot next for the Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, but can he beat Notable Speech? Joseph O'Brien secured his first Group 1 in two years as Al Riffa threw his hat into the Arc ring. But was Sarah impressed with the son of Wootton Bassett, and which two massive-priced outsiders interest her for Europe's most prestigious middle-distance race? British racing has some debates on a regular basis - one of them is our principal story in this week's edition of The Front Page. Lee Mottershead, Peter Scargill and Liam Headd reflect on the publication of the 2025 fixtures list, which got plenty of people hot under the collar. Whoever succeeds Julie Harrington as BHA chief executive will lead the work on the 2026 fixture list. We look at the job advertisement published last week and consider what sort of person might be appointed. Finally, we head to France for analysis of a mega merger and Charyn's runaway success in the Prix Jacques le Marois.
Lots to look ahead to this week and first off we hear from a couple of jockeys taking part in tomorrow's Shergar Cup, in conversation with Josh Stacey, before heading to Ireland and hearing from Barry Mahon on Juddmonte's leading hope in tomorrow's Group 1 Phoenix Stakes at the Curragh. Then it's onto France ahead of the Prix Jacques le Marios for which Nurlan Bizakov shares his expectations for likely favourite Charyn whilst Chris Richardson gives us cause for optimism ahead of Inspiral's bid to win the race for the third time. Finally, ahead of Germany's Group 1 Gross Preis von Berlin on Sunday, Joseph O'Brien assess the chance of the classy Al Riffa.
Charlotte Greenway in for Nick today and joined by the Racing Post's Lee Mottershead to reflect on a couple of eye catching performances from yesterday whilst assessing the competition to Charyn in Sunday's Prix Jacques le Marois. His owner Nurlan Bizakov joins the show to first reflect on Lazzat's Group 1 victory on Sunday before looking ahead to Charyn this weekend whilst he also nominates some intriguing targets for both horses going forward. With the Cox Plate entries just revealed, Charlotte Mills of Moonee Valley Racing Club casts her eye over those and Nick brings us the regular Timeform segment with Dan Barber before heading to Shadwell for this week's Weatherby's Bloodstock segment with Will Wright.
Aly Vance, Geoff Banks, and Emmet Kennedy review Royal Ascot and ask if it has become racing's greatest festival. We chat about the star performances from Rosallion, Henry Longfellow, Charyn, Porta Fortuna, Opera Singer, Haatem, Auguste Rodin, Isle Of Jura, Kyprios, Inisherin, Asfoora, Khaadem, Port Fairy, Fairy Godmother, Bedtime Story, and more. With Oisin Murphy, Sean Levey, James Doyle, Billy Loughnane, Rossa Ryan, Tom Marquand, Colin Keane, Callum Shepherd, Dylan Browne McMonagle, and Ryan Moore excelling, who needs Frankie? We chat about potential election interference by the Gambling Commission. What is going on with Godolphin after Charlie Appleby drew a blank for the second consecutive Royal Ascot, while Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore were crowned leading trainer and rider yet again? Plus, has ITV Racing become the propaganda arm of British racing? This episode is brought to you by BetterHelp. If you're thinking of starting therapy, give BetterHelp a try. Ravage & Son (Bellevue Literary Press, 2023) by Jerome Charyn is a novel set in the Lower East Side of New York City in the early years of the twentieth century when it was America's most crime-ridden and decadent neighborhood. Featuring an alluring cast of heroes, misfits, and monsters, Ravage & Son is part Jekyll and Hyde, part crime noir, part mystery novel, and ultimately an instant classic – a cinematic kaleidoscope that captures both the intense beauty and utter debauchery of humanity in this bygone era. At the heart of the novel is the menacing Lionel Ravage, a heartbroken powerbroker hell bent on making the world pay for the loss of his soul mate, and his illegitimate son Ben, a poor boy educated at Harvard who becomes a downtown detective for the Kehilla, a quasi-police force slapped with the responsibility of cleaning up the Lower East Side's layers of dirt and crime. The younger Ravage fights to protect, while his father yearns to burn it all to the ground. They share a deep wound and savage love that chains them together but is too agonizing to relive. Jerome Charyn's brilliance is in capturing the violence festering behind closed doors and in the streets as forces large and small work in unity to suck the marrow out of the Jewish neighborhood and its inhabitants. The author's magnificent sentence-by-sentence style is marked both by an intensity and sensitivity that makes the dark tale more human and humane. It is as if Charyn is at war with the past, fully committed to its darkness, but delivering a source of light through his unmatched voice, the essential narrative delivered in what he calls his “music.” With touches of magical realism and an aura of mysticism, Charyn turns the Lower East Side into a portal for looking at that era and our own. The author of more than 50 novels, biographies, histories, graphic novels, and collections, Charyn once proclaimed that his ultimate goal in writing novels has been “to make the reader cry...to break the reader's heart.” With its stunning, unforgettable portrayal of the forces of light and darkness, Ravage & Son delivers on the author's aim, presenting humanity in its fully formed depravity, but also capturing life's poignancy. The interview focuses on Ravage & Son, but Charyn and I discuss other aspects of his renowned career, including discussion of writing style, research, literary influences, and more. Charyn is arguably the most famous writer most readers have never heard of, a bestseller in France and other parts of Europe, and a true “writer's writer” who continues to publish acclaimed books while being lauded by major authors including Joyce Carol Oates, Michael Chabon, Don DeLillo, and a long list of others. He is a distinctive voice in American literary history. Bob Batchelor is an award-winning cultural historian and biographer. BIG RED: NARRATED BY A STARRY-EYED LESBIAN, BIG RED REIMAGINES THE TRAGIC CAREER OF RITA HAYWORTH AND HER INDOMITABLE HUSBAND, ORSON WELLES.Set amidst the noir glamour of Hollywood's Golden Age, Big Red re-envisions the life of one of America's most enduring icons: Gilda herself, Rita Hayworth, whose fiery red hair and hypnotic dancing helped make her the quintessential movie star of the 1940s.With narrator Rusty Redburn - a feisty second-string gossip columnist from Kalamazoo tasked with spying on Hayworth by Columbia movie mogul Harry 'The Janitor' Cohn - as our guide, we follow the meteoric rise and heartrending demise of the actress, encountering her exploitative father, Eduardo; her controlling husband, 'boy genius' Orson Welles; and notorious journalist Louella Parsons, among many others. Mixing his trademark screwball comedy and unerring tragedy, Jerome Charyn, with his 'polymorphous imagination' (Jonathan Lethem) reanimates film classics such as Cover Girl, Gilda, and The Lady from Shanghai. An insightful, tender portrait of a seemingly halcyon age before blockbusters and film franchises, Big Red promises to consume both Hollywood cinephiles and neophytes alike.Jerome Charyn is the author of more than fifty works of fiction and nonfiction. Among other honors, he has received the Rosenthal Family Foundation Award for Fiction from the American Academy of Arts and Letters and his novels have been selected as finalists for the Firecracker Award and PEN/Faulkner Award for Fiction. Charyn lives in New York.Recommendations (Film): Chinatown, The Lady From Shanghai, Duel In The Sun, Chimes At Midnight, Citizen Kane, Touch Of Evil, The Magnificent Ambersons, Double Indemnity, The Third Man, Decision To Leave, Gold Diggers of 1933, On The Waterfront, The Stranger, Vertigo.Books: James Ellroy, No Country for Old Men Cormac McCarthy, City of Nets Otto Friedrich.Produced by Junkyard DogMusic courtesy of Southgate and LeighCrime TimePaul Burke writes for Crime Time, Crime Fiction Lover and the European Literature Network. 14 year old Jarred Eagan joins the show along with his with parents, Charyn and Angelo, and sister, Gabrielle Jarred was diagnosed in October 2021 with ALL. Jarred presented signs of exhaustion and petechiae on his leg. He started out with a lot of cancer to treat, including a mediastinal tumor in his chest. He was reclassified from High Risk to Very High Risk only a few months after his diagnosis. He is responding really well to the treatments and is expected to receive his last chemotherapy treatment at the end of November. Jarred is going into his freshman year at Whitman Hanson High School. He is a very active kid who loves to fish and plays baseball, basketball, and football. Over the last few months at Dana-Farber, his family has met many people and appreciate how it always feels like a family.
Since he first appeared on the American literary scene, Jerome Charyn has dazzled readers with his “blunt, brilliantly crafted prose” With Big Red, Charyn reimagines the life of one of America's most enduring icons, “Gilda” herself, Rita Hayworth, whose fiery red tresses and hypnotic dancing graced the silver screen over sixty times in her nearly forty-year career. The quintessential movie star of the 1940s, Hayworth has long been objectified as a sex symbol, pin-up girl, and so-called Love Goddess. Reanimating such classic films as Gilda and The Lady from Shanghai, Big Red is a bittersweet paean to Hollywood's Golden Age, a tender yet honest portrait of a time before blockbusters and film franchises―one that promises to consume both Hollywood cinephiles and neophytes alike. Lauded for his “polymorphous imagination” (Jonathan Lethem), Charyn once again has created one of the most inventive novels in recent American literature.

First they discuss three collaborations with François Boucq: Little Tulip, Billy Budd, KGB, and The Magician's Wife. These were originally published in French between 1987 and 2014, but they've been available in English translations over the past seventeen months (the most recent, Little Tulip, coming out this past December). They also explore The Boys of Sheriff Street, Charyn's project with Jacques de Loustal that was translated and published by Dover in July 2016. Over the course of their conversation Derek and Edward investigate Charyn's methods of storytelling, finding similarities and thematic links among the four titles, and they discuss the different ways in which Boucq's and Loustal's styles bring different resonances to their respective narratives.
