-What does codependency look like in families navigating addiction? -Why is it that setting boundaries is so emphasized in these families? -How do you set boundaries with loved ones struggling with addiction? And does it lead to living happily ever after? Welcome to Episode 142! In this episode, Nick Bognar returns to discuss codependency in families navigating addiction. We all know that codependents tend to take on their caretaking roles with dependents (those struggling with addiction or alcoholism) but what does that really look like? Nick describes the common traits of codependents in families navigating addiction and why setting boundaries is so important in these situations. Nick gets specific on what it looks like to set boundaries, both with addicts and other family members, and how to overcome the pain that often comes with boundaries. We conclude with a message from hope about the long-term positive changes boundaries provide. It's a must-listen! More on this week's guest: Nick Bognar is a therapist in Pasadena, CA who specializes in men's issues and codependence. Nick's favorite thing in the world is helping clients learn how to set boundaries. In his spare time, Nick acts in various film projects under the stage name "Ryan Gosling". www.nickbognartherapy.com Resource for therapists: https://go.actionpracticebuilding.com https://www.instagram.com/nickbognarmft/ Nick's first episode on The Codependummy Podcast: https://codependummy.com/codependency-as-a-super-power-say-what/ More deets on the episode: We begin by hearing Nicks' expansion on his initial definition of codependency: taking care of people until it kills you…which is made of a set of behaviors, set of beliefs where there's a non-reciprocity with people or the world. These behaviors, beliefs, and the lack of reciprocity tend to cause a lot of misery, suffering, and lead people into therapy. Nick opens up about codependency in his life, including when he worked as a waiter. He recalls how he was good at it thanks to being adept at anticipating people's needs. He'd extend himself to his customers and often end up feeling betrayed, miserable, and disappointed since he took care of their needs and they did not take care of his. We shift focus to codependency in families navigating addiction. Nick details codependent behaviors in these families, including secret-keeping, an over-focus on a “problem child” while ignoring the addiction, caretaking, and preserving the notion of peace. Nick spells out why setting boundaries is so often emphasized in these families: 1) there is an overstepping of boundaries in said families; and 2) lack of boundaries lead to neglect of self-care. The boundary-less-ness leads a codependent to take on a role of being caring, anticipating needs, allowing abuse, and suffering quietly. We explore what boundaries look like in these families which fall on a spectrum: on one end, boundaries with an addict can involve a complete cut-off from communication; on the other end, it can be refusing to be around them when they drink/use. Nick highlights how boundaries often are confused as a way to say “no,” however, it's truly a way to say “yes” to maintaining relationships. While boundaries are painful, Nick stresses how no amount of help on your part will save a loved one. He recalls helping former clients with setting boundaries and shares a message hope for the positive impact they can have. So go out there and set those boundaries! Thanks for coming on Nick! In this episode of the Epigenetics Podcast, we caught up with Nada Jabado from McGill University to talk about her work on oncohistones as drivers of Pediatric Brain Tumors. Nada Jabado and her team were amongst the first to identify mutations in Histone 3.3 Tails which lead to differentially remodeled chromatin in pediatric glioblastoma. Mutations that occur include the Lysine at position 27 and the Glycine at position 34. If those residues are mutated it will influence the equilibrium of chromatin associated proteins like the Polycomb Repressive Complex (PRC) and hence domains of heterochromatin will be shifted. This, in turn, will lead to differential gene expression and development of developmental disorders or cancer. References Schwartzentruber, J., Korshunov, A., Liu, X. Y., Jones, D. “We've got almost 5,000 employees. I said, 'We've got too many layers of management. We needed to break down the barriers and provide access to all levels of our management, including the most senior levels here.'I really am a big fan that when I go into a restaurant, I'm an employee just like the servers or the dishwasher or one of the lines cooks. They should feel that they have that access to leadership and not the hierarchy or formality of saying, 'President's here. We all need to change our behavior.'We've really been encouraging that behavior. You know the old story. You find out what's really going on in the restaurant from the dish pit guy because he's going to tell you what food's coming back on the plate, what's going into the garbage, what's being done and what's not being done. Nobody pays attention to that voice, but it is a wealth of information."

They say opposites attract and in Acts chapter 10 we have the passage about Peter and Cornelius, two men who were opposites in their upbringing, their culture and beliefs. Ps Eugene shares that God is our common denominator and how two totally different people can be connected through a Godly encounter that changed both of their paradigms.
Ps Eugene & Judy share a message about following Jesus. God is always asking us questions and in Matthew Chapter 4 verse 19 Jesus asks some fishermen to drop everything and follow Him. Are we willing to stop and listen to the voice of God and see His amazing love working in us and through us.

Mental health is one of the most significant areas of our system, but our awareness and knowledge about it is usually lacking. That's why a majority of us tolerate burnout, toxic masculinity, and disasterbating, making it hard to get out of the box of these alarming limiters. Jason Wrobel and Whitney Lauritsen dissect these sensitive topics with therapist Nick Bognar. Together, they discuss why the culture of burnout must not be fetishized anymore, the dangers of toxic masculinity and how it affects the perspective of fear, and how to avoid drowning yourself in negative thoughts simply because of disasterbating on social media. The three of them also share their own guilty pleasures and how they consume each one.Love the show? Do find yourself going out of your way and making sacrifices for other people's happiness, but not getting much in return? Codependency is a behavioral condition in a relationship where one person enables another individual's addiction, poor mental health, immaturity, and irresponsibility. It seems to be common among some HSP's and empaths. Some of the characteristics of codependency is an excessive reliance on other people for approval and a loss of identity. My guest, Nick Bognar is a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Pasadena, CA. Nick's therapeutic work as a client-led him to pursue a career in helping others shed the emotional shackles and burdens that keep them down, so that each may live their own happiest life and have the greatest impact on their community. Nick's professional interests include helping people set boundaries and codependency issues.
