Last week, South Carolina officials reported that measles is transmitting rapidly in the state, with 789 confirmed cases so far. South Carolina is the fifth state to accumulate at least 100 measles cases since January 2025, joining Utah, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas (where the first cases in 2025 were reported). And when we had that deal done, he went - he called his Republican colleagues said don't do it. It's going to hurt me politically. He never argued. It's not a good bill. It's a really good bill. We need those machines. We need those machines. And we're coming down very hard in every country in Asia in terms of precursors for fentanyl. And Mexico is working with us to make sure they don't have the technology to be able to put it together. That's what we have to do. We need those machines. Wait, what machines? You can remotely, non-destructively detect that a bag of powder contains fentanyl rather than some other, legal substance? And you can sense it through the body of a car? My god. The LEO community must be holding out on us. If that tech existed, we'd have tricorders by now. What's actually going on here? What's Up With Fentanyl-Detecting Machines? First of all, Biden didn't make them up. This year, the Department of Homeland Security reports that Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) has deployed "Non-Intrusive Inspection" at the US's southwest border: "By installing 123 new large-scale scanners at multiple POEs along the southwest border, CBP will increase its inspection capacity of passenger vehicles from two percent to 40 percent, and of cargo vehicles from 17 percent to 70 percent." In fact, there's something of a scandal about how many of these scanners have been sitting in warehouses but not actually deployed. CBP Commissioner Troy Miller complained to NBC News that the scanners are sitting idle because Congress hasn't allocated the budget for installing them. These are, indeed, big drive-through machines. They X-ray cars, allowing most traffic to keep flowing without interruption. Could an X-ray machine really detect fentanyl inside a car? To answer that, we have to think about what an x-ray machine actually does. An X-ray is a form of high-energy, short-wavelength electromagnetic radiation. X-rays can pass through solid objects, but how easily they pass through depends on the material - higher atomic number materials are more absorbing per unit mass. This is why bones will show up on an X-ray scan. The calcium (element 20) in bones has higher atomic mass than the other most common elements in living things (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, sulfur), and bones are also denser than soft tissue, so bones absorb X-rays while the rest of the body scatters it. This is also how airport security scans baggage: a cabinet x-ray shows items inside a suitcase, differentiated by density. It's also how industrial CT scans can look inside products nondestructively to see how they're made. To some extent, X-ray scanners can distinguish materials, by their density and atomic number. But fentanyl is an organic compound - made of carbon, hydrogen, nitrogen, and oxygen, just like lots of other things. Its density is a very normal 1.1 g/mL (close to the density of water.) The New York for All Act offers protections that help make this possible by prohibiting all local law enforcement and state agencies from working with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Patrol (CBP). The previous year's same period had recorded only 908,000 encounters, approximately 100,000 fewer than this fiscal year. The sudden surge of migration toward the U.S.-Mexico border can be attributed in no small part to the alarming number of encounters in December, hitting a figure of 302,000. The sheer volume of migrant encounters within such a short period — less than five months — inspires serious concern when put into context. This united support from those responsible for enforcing its key aspects highlights the significance of the plan.  

Joe Biden's New Year's surprise is him breaking yet another immigration record. Nearly a quarter of a million total encounters were reported on the southern border in November, breaking the record for the month amid an ongoing illegal immigration crisis. At least not until after 11:59 p.m. on May 11. That’s the moment when the pandemic-era “Title 42” rapid expulsion policy finally expires and is replaced by a new, untested Biden administration plan for keeping them in Reynosa as well as the “volatile logjam,” as The New York Times recently termed them, of tens of thousands of other immigrants now waiting for the policy change all over Mexico. But because of a powerful deterrent of Title 42 fairly unique to them, the 15,000 Haitians in Reynosa make for a good bellwether for if the administration’s replacement strategy will hold them back as Title 42 has, or will invite the most chaotic rush on the U.S. southern border yet in this third long year of the most voluminous mass migration event in recorded American history. The reason to watch Reynosa after May 12 is that most of its Haitians, long ago overflowing migrant camps all over town, will not dare cross the river while Title 42 is in effect, unlike other nationalities who have already disregarded it by crossing in large numbers. The Haitians of Reynosa won’t go even as they enviously witness large numbers of Venezuelans nearby illegally cross in an overwhelming new surge despite Title 42 and see the American government admit them into the country. Title 42’s impact on them is why its ending makes Reynosa and its reticent population of Haitians almost the perfect bellwether to know if the Biden administration’s plan for May 12 is going to work as sold. Either way, many hundreds of thousands, turning into millions by the end of the Biden term, will enter. At the request of the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), the U.S. service members will be sent on a 90-day temporary deployment assisting Customs and Border Patrol (CBP), the Pentagon announced on Tuesday. The troops will not carry out law enforcement work, but instead perform support duties that will free up CBP agents to detain and process migrants. Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas said Sunday the government is bracing for a record tide of migration across the southwest border when pandemic restrictions, known as Title 42, end on May 11. The Trump-era authorities prevented migrants from requesting asylum and allowed U.S. border agents to quickly expel migrants out of public-health concerns. Mayorkas emphasized the immigration system was stretched thin on resources and made a public case for federal relief.“I just want to be clear that we are working within significant constraints,” he said Sunday on “Meet the Press.” “We need people. We need technology. We need facilities. I intend to do just that.” Inslee's announcement follows the conclusion of an "intense" and "controversial" legislative session where the democrat-controlled House and Senate voted to ban semi-automatic firearms, make Washington a sanctuary state for minors seeking gender affirming care and abortions, and legalized possession of illicit drugs, to name a few. Governor Inslee became the second governor in state history to serve three consecutive terms after he was re-elected in 2020, and in his announcement Inslee called his tenure a "dynamic success." Under Inslee's governance, Washington state has succumbed to criminal lawlessness as well as an existential homeless crisis rippling throug the evergreen state. Here Are The Staggering Numbers… Carjackings in Washington D.C. continue to skyrocket in line with a five-year trend that has the local police chief Robert Contee lamenting that crimes are happing “at a pace that I have not seen in my 30-plus year career here with the Metropolitan Police Department.” Since the beginning of the year, there have been a staggering 228 carjackings in the District, 78 of which occurred in April alone, with 23 in the last week, according to the Washington D.C. Metropolitical Police Department (MPD). Despite 74 percent of this year’s carjackings featuring a firearm, less than 35 percent of carjacking offenses are prosecuted. In 2018, there were 148 carjackings in D.C., and 152 in 2019. However, following the death of George Floyd, the D.C. city council announced its intention to slash $15 million from the MPD’s annual budget. This resulted in an explosion in carjackings, amongst other crimes. In 2020, there were 360 carjackings, followed by 425 in 2021, and 485 last year. If carjackings continue to occur at the current rate, there may be as many as 600 by the end of 2023. Republicans from the U.S. House of Representatives were forced to intervene earlier this year after the D.C. council wanted to reduce penalties for violent crimes such as carjacking and gun possession. The D.C. council thought it better to lower the maximum jail time for carjackings, and eliminate most mandatory minimum sentences for crimes in the capitol than addressing the problem as the MPD demanded. The Criminal Code Act of 2022 was, however, blocked by the U.S. Congress from coming into force, with 33 Democrat Senators even voting against the bill. Andrew Clyde, a House Representative from Georgia’s 9th District, led the charge against the Criminal Code Act, arguing that Congress had to “stop this insanity in its tracks.” The Democrat Mayor of Washington D.C., Muriel Bowser, has also promised free steering wheel locks for some cars after suggesting one of the reasons why carjackings are so common had something to do with a “recent social media challenge.” These actions, however, do not meet the demands of the local police force. A representative of the MPD Carjacking Task Force, Valkyrie Barnes, argues, “It’s ridiculous… unless there is some kind of deterrent to this, it’s not going to stop… we need more [detectives].” The District of Columbia and many of its residents currently support the notion of adding D.C. as a fully-fledged state, arguing that residents are taxed as citizens, but do not receive commensurate representation as a result. Opponents of this cause point out that D.C. residents often have far more political sway than ordinary voters around the country, and that the purpose of the District, per the nation’s founders, was to be separate from the Congress and its machinations. Two people familiar with Vice operations told the paper the media company is looking for a buyer. Otherwise, the company will have to file for bankruptcy, the unnamed sources said. “Vice Media Group has been engaged in a comprehensive evaluation of strategic alternatives and planning,” Vice said in a statement on Monday to the Times. “The company, its board and stakeholders continue to be focused on finding the best path for the company.” The media company, which got its start as a Canadian alternative publication, eventually became a digital powerhouse known for its in-your-face, youth-focused stories about politics, music, and culture, told across a constellation of websites, films, podcasts, TV shows, the flagship magazine, and eventually a standalone TV network. Vice News reporters filed memorable documentaries like a report from the Charlottesville “Unite the Right” rally in 2017, as well as reporting gonzo tales like chronicling NBA legend Dennis Rodman’s visit to North Korea. A 2017 investment round led by TPG once valued the company at $5.7bn. More recently, the company was thought to be worth less than $1bn, according to reports earlier this year about the company’s potential search for a buyer. Despite receiving acclaim for its unique style of storytelling, as well investments from marquee names like Disney and Fox, the company has continued to struggle financially. Last week, the company announced it would cancel its flagship “Vice News Tonight” show and lay off dozens of employees amid a larger corporate restructuring, the latest in a bruising season of media layoffs that saw cuts at Insider, NPR, Paper magazine, and the demise of Buzzfeed News. That follows reports that the Vice got an emergency $30m in financing to pay off a growing number of debts. In February, Vice Media chief executive Nancy Dubuc left the company. The company fell short of a 2022 revenue goal by more than $100m, The Wall Street Journal reported in December. In 2018, there were 148 carjackings in D.C., and 152 in 2019. The Russian leader also made veiled threats to use nuclear weapons if Russian territorial integrity is threatened. Putin announced the mobilization on Wednesday morning, stating “only military reservists, primarily those who served in the armed forces and have specific military occupational specialties and corresponding experience, will be called up.” Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said 300,000 people will be called up for service in the partial mobilization. Putin’s order falls short of a full mobilization of the Russian military, with a full-scale draft. France 24 reported that in an interview with Russian state television, Shoigu said students and those who already served as conscripts would not be called up and the majority of Russia’s reserve forces would not be drafted. As much as the Biden administration would like to make us believe that there is nothing to see at the border other than cruel Republican politicians and tumbleweed, we are facing an untenable crisis down Mexico way. The longer we ignore it, the more dangerous it becomes. Before diving into the dangers that lurk down south, let’s take a closer look at the numbers. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) reported that last month there were 203,598 illegal immigrant “encounters” at the southern border – in other words, people trying to cross the border illegally and coming into contact with U.S. officials. But, unfortunately, that’s just the number they know of; there isn’t a mechanism to capture the number of ‘gotaways.’ Gotaways are those that, just as the name entails, got away clean. Over the border and into the interior of the country. Last month’s numbers bring the total number of encounters for Fiscal Year 2022 to an unthinkable 2,150,370, with one more month to go. The last time that we broke the record on encounters at the southern border was just the previous Fiscal Year when we surpassed 1.7 million. That’s an increase of 450,000 more migrants or the equivalent of two months worth of migrants that came in this year. There have been some months where the CBP has recorded 8,000 illegal immigrants in one day apprehended at the border. If that were to be the daily standard, that would mean each week, 56,000 would be taken in at the border. So let’s see here, in the 11 months of this fiscal year, we have had 2,150,370 encounters. So let’s compare that to some other numbers. Population of Chicago = 2.7 million Population of Houston = 2.3 million Populations of Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and San Jose = about 1 million Estimated amount of Russian troops deployed to Ukraine = 150,000 Total U.S. military troops to include reservists = 2.2 million Total active duty Chinese military = 2.2 million Total active duty Russian military = 1 million Think of it this way, we have the equivalent of the city of Houston pouring into our southern border. The world condemned, and rightfully so, the invasion of Russia into Ukraine. We have 14 times the amount of people invading our southern border. Or, to put it another way, the equivalent of the Chinese active duty military has bombarded the border. The number of people who have attempted to cross is greater than the total populations of 15 entire states: New Mexico, Nebraska, Idaho, West Virginia, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Montana, Rhode Island, Delaware, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Vermont, and Wyoming. Putin’s order falls short of a full mobilization of the Russian military, with a full-scale draft. France 24 reported that in an interview with Russian state television, Shoigu said students and those who already served as conscripts would not be called up and the majority of Russia’s reserve forces would not be drafted. The longer we ignore it, the more dangerous it becomes. Before diving into the dangers that lurk down south, let’s take a closer look at the numbers. Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) reported that last month there were 203,598 illegal immigrant “encounters” at the southern border – in other words, people trying to cross the border illegally and coming into contact with U.S. officials. But, unfortunately, that’s just the number they know of; there isn’t a mechanism to capture the number of ‘gotaways.’ Gotaways are those that, just as the name entails, got away clean. Over the border and into the interior of the country. Last month’s numbers bring the total number of encounters for Fiscal Year 2022 to an unthinkable 2,150,370, with one more month to go. The last time that we broke the record on encounters at the southern border was just the previous Fiscal Year when we surpassed 1.7 million. That’s an increase of 450,000 more migrants or the equivalent of two months worth of migrants that came in this year. There have been some months where the CBP has recorded 8,000 illegal immigrants in one day apprehended at the border. If that were to be the daily standard, that would mean each week, 56,000 would be taken in at the border. So let’s see here, in the 11 months of this fiscal year, we have had 2,150,370 encounters. So let’s compare that to some other numbers. Population of Chicago = 2.7 million Population of Houston = 2.3 million Populations of Phoenix, Philadelphia, San Antonio, San Diego, Dallas, and San Jose = about 1 million Estimated amount of Russian troops deployed to Ukraine = 150,000 Total U.S. military troops to include reservists = 2.2 million Total active duty Chinese military = 2.2 million Total active duty Russian military = 1 million Think of it this way, we have the equivalent of the city of Houston pouring into our southern border. The world condemned, and rightfully so, the invasion of Russia into Ukraine. We have 14 times the amount of people invading our southern border. Or, to put it another way, the equivalent of the Chinese active duty military has bombarded the border. The number of people who have attempted to cross is greater than the total populations of 15 entire states: New Mexico, Nebraska, Idaho, West Virginia, Hawaii, New Hampshire, Maine, Montana, Rhode Island, Delaware, South Dakota, North Dakota, Alaska, Vermont, and Wyoming. Local prosecutors filed a lawsuit Tuesday in civil court to have Robert Telles booted from his role as Clark County public administrator, which handles the assets of people who die without wills. Since Telles' arrest Sept. 7 for the alleged murder of Las Vegas Review-Journal reporter Jeff German, he has been held without bail. "Defendant Telles has neglected to perform the official duties of the Clark County Public Administrator," according to the motion requesting that he be "deprived of and removed from his office." Telles, 45, was elected Jan. 1, 2019, then lost the Democratic Party primary in June – after German wrote stories accusing Telles of having an affair with a married underling and running a toxic work environment. German, 69, was working on follow-up reports when he was killed. Telles shut off his cellphone Sept. 2 and then attacked German in his home before allegedly fleeing wearing an orange shirt and a wide-brim straw hat, according to police. At a prior court appearance, a judge described the killing as "chilling" and said German was "fighting for his life" in his final moments. If a judge does not strip Telles of his position, he is entitled to continue raking in his $120,000 a year salary, with another $50,000 in benefits, until his term is up Dec. 31, 2022. The politician-turned-criminal defendant was assigned a court-appointed attorney Tuesday at his arraignment on one count of murder with use of a deadly weapon on a victim 60 years of age or older. He did not enter a plea. Clark County District Attorney Robert Wolfson said he would determine in the coming weeks whether Telles will face the death penalty. After New York mayor Eric Adams announced Tuesday that he’s ending the private employer vaccine mandate but keeping it for city workers, Irving took to social media to label it a human rights violation of historic proportions. “If I can work and be unvaccinated, then all of my brothers and sisters who are also unvaccinated should be able to do the same, without being discriminated against, vilified, or fired,” Irving wrote. “This enforced Vaccine/Pandemic is one the biggest violations of HUMAN RIGHTS in history.” Some might suggest that is slight hyperbole, but New York’s COVID vaccine requirements have been arguably the strictest in the country. Irving’s steadfast refusal to adhere to them saw him limited to just 29 games last regular season and only six home tilts at Barclays Center, once the city loosened rules for unvaccinated athletes and entertainers in March. A City Hall rep had no comment when asked by The Post about Irving’s critique. Irving should be available for this upcoming season. That, plus Ben Simmons’ Nets debut and the likes of Joe Harris returning from surgery, should give Brooklyn a healthier roster. “That’s all that matters. That’s all that matters,” Irving said Sunday on the Boyz Night Out podcast. “All the hypotheticals that come when nobody is healthy and when you’re not 100%.” Irving added that his vaccine stance was larger than the missed games. “I played 29 games, I barely played home games. It wasn’t a typical season I would have wanted. But things happen,” Irving said. “I had to stand on a whole bunch of bigger stuff than just that.” Now Irving will continue to stand on his belief that the municipal workers should be free to be unvaccinated, as the private sector employees now are. “Our vaccinated workforce kept the city open and operating, with over 300,000 employees it was crucial to put it in place and we’re keeping it in place,” Adams said while getting his booster at City Hall. “Our vaccinated workers have carried out their jobs and stepped up when the city needed them the most and we think it’s imperative to send the right message and lead by example.” Mayor Adams added that 89 percent of New Yorkers, including children, have been vaccinated. As such, the vaccine requirements for New York City schoolchildren to play sports and other higher-risk extracurricular activities are also being dropped. The city was still encouraging vaccines and boosters. “The rollout has been important and crucial and because we’ve been so successful, it’s time to move on to the next level of fortifying our city,” Adams said. “This puts the choice in the hands of New Yorkers. It’s imperative we’re asking them to continue to encourage their employees to get their vaccines and booster shots.” When asked about the municipal mandate – which led to over 1,500 city employees being terminated – Adams said no end date was imminent. Local officers reportedly delayed US Border Patrol agents from going after gunman who killed 21 people at Texas school Not only were local police slow to confront the shooter who killed 19 children and two adults in Tuesday's Texas school massacre, they also reportedly refused to allow federal agents to confront the gunman until nearly an hour after they'd arrived on the scene. Specially equipped US Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) agents, who arrived at the Uvalde, Texas elementary school between noon and 12:10pm, weren't allowed by local police to breach the adjoining classrooms in which the shooter had locked himself until just before 1pm, the New York Times reported on Friday, citing unidentified federal officials. The federal agents found a chaotic scene when they arrived at the school, where people were pulling children out of windows and police tried to secure a perimeter. The agents, who arrived at the school “far earlier than previously known,” didn't understand why they weren't allowed to immediately charge the gunman, the Times said. “We were told to wait,” a Border Patrol official told Yahoo News on Friday. “We were told to wait and wait, and the team wanted to go. But you have to understand, CBP is not the lead agency, so they had to wait, and now look what happened.” Uvalde is located west of San Antonio, about 80 miles from the US-Mexico border. Tuesday's incident began when a 911 caller reported seeing a man with a gun outside Uvalde's Robb Elementary School. The shooter, identified as 18-year-old Salvador Ramos, reportedly entered the school through an unlocked door around 11:40am. Rather than confronting the gunman immediately, as policing protocol requires in the case of an active shooter, 19 officers stood in the hallway outside the fourth-grade classrooms in which Ramos had locked himself, Texas director of public safety Steven McCraw told reporters on Friday. As more than 45 minutes ticked by, students inside the classroom desperately called 911 for help, in at least one case using a dead teacher's phone. “We were told to wait,” a Border Patrol official told Yahoo News on Friday. “We were told to wait and wait, and the team wanted to go. In the aftermath of the Trump administration’s assassination of Iranian General Qassim Soleimani, agents of the Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) at a crossing in Washington State are reportedly detaining Americans of Iranian descent. The Washington State chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR-WA) is assisting more than 60 Iranians and Iranian-Americans of all ages who were detained at length and questioned at the Peace Arch Border Crossing in Blaine, Washington.
