Patreon Justin has picked some gems and corkers before, like Blood Simple and Hard Eight, and this time he's chosen the little known 1992 comedy, Brain Donors."Brain Donors" was produced during a time when Hollywood was revisiting and paying homage to classic comedy styles, and its production was heavily influenced by the desire to recreate the Marx Brothers' iconic brand of humor. The film was written by Pat Proft, known for his work on the "Naked Gun" series, and produced by David Zucker, Jerry Zucker, and Jim Abrahams, the trio behind many successful comedies of the 1980s. Their involvement ensured that the film would be packed with rapid-fire jokes, slapstick, and absurdity, staying true to the spirit of the Marx Brothers while adding a modern twist. The project was initially conceived as a direct tribute to the Marx Brothers, with the working title "Lame Ducks," and the characters were loosely based on Groucho, Chico, and Harpo Marx.John Turturro, who played the Groucho-esque character Jacques, was a standout in the cast, bringing his unique energy and comedic timing to the role. The production faced challenges in balancing the homage to classic comedy with appealing to contemporary audiences, which led to mixed reactions upon its release. Despite its star-studded creative team and ambitious vision, the film struggled at the box office, partly due to limited marketing and the niche appeal of its humor. However, over time, "Brain Donors" has garnered a cult following, appreciated for its commitment to reviving the chaotic, irreverent spirit of the Marx Brothers. The making of the film reflects a passionate attempt to honor a bygone era of comedy, even if it didn't achieve mainstream success. If you enjoy the show we have a Patreon, so become a supporter.www.patreon.com/thevhsstrikesbackPlot SummaryRoland T Flakfixer, Jacques and Rocco, a trio of eccentric misfits, are hired by the wealthy widow Lillian Oglethorpe to establish a ballet company in honor of her late husband. This week on Saturday Night Jive we're talking about the 1992 comedy Brain Donors. There are no SNL alum in this film but it was directed by Dennis Dugan who after watching Problem Child, Beverly Hills Ninja, I Now Pronounce You Chuck & Larry, You Don't Mess With The Zohan, Grown Ups, Jack And Jill, and Grown Ups 2 feels like an honorary member of our family. This is a "remake" of The Marx Brothers film A Night At The Opera (with a little bit of A Day At The Races thrown in) starring John Turturro, the guy who ran the torture machine in The Princess Bride, and some other dude as analogs for Groucho, Chico and Harpo. It's an odd movie with a few decent gags but you're ultimately left with the feeling of "why didn't I just watch a Marx Brothers movie?". If we didn't have enough to talk about with this oddity we also discuss Damien Chazelle's Babylon featuring SNL alum Chloe Fineman in a small role. It's one of our favorite films of 2022 that has an ending that left us both stumped. Enjoy!Full archive of all podcast episodes available at saturdaynightjive.blogspot.comEmail us anything at saturdaynightjivepodcast@gmail.comDownload Here

Imagine a Marx Brothers-like film in 1992, now imagine a really good Marx Brothers-like film in 1992…well, imagine no longer because such a movie actually exists, "Brain Donors". Created by the team behind "Airplane!" and "The Naked Gun", "Brain Donors" achieved everything it set out to do…except find an audience. To explain why, we are joined by producer David Zucker and screenwriter Pat Proft, both life-long Marx fans. They detail the making of the film, including the casting of John Turturro as the Groucho-inspired Roland T. Flakfizer. David and Pat also discuss the Hollywood politics that derailed what could have been a series of faux-Marx films. Surely, one of our most requested topics… Name-checked in this episode: Jason Alexander, Bob Costas, Senator Joseph McCarthy
Oh, hey guys! This week I ask my friend Andrew Mercado to tell me all about Brain Donors. Why was this movie made in 1992 and not 1892? How come no one donates their brain in this movie? Can you still own a ballet company? Would this have been better starring The Marx Bros.? All these questions might get answered and of course, we don't spare the details! This time around, it's silliness to profundity, first looking at the 1992 pastiche of A Night At The Opera, it's Brain Donors starring John Turturro, Bob Nelson and Mel Smith, then we go onto the hard stuff, John Cassavetes' harrowing and emotionally raw drama from 1968, Faces starring John Marley, Lynn Carlin and Gena Rowlands. Support the podcast via Patreon.
It's "Cult Movie Challenge" time again, and this time around we look at 4 films from 1957: "12 Angry Men", "Funny Face", "The Seventh Seal" and "Bridge On The River Kwai". It was a mixed bag, with very mixed opinions on these classics. Before that we also look at this year's E3 news, Joe gets stuck into more ios gaming with "Clash of Clans" and Mitch finishes "Lollipop Chainsaw" on the 360. In TV we go non-spoiler "Game of Thrones", hotpants crazy for "Supergirl", and meta Dan Harmon in "Community", before turning our attention to movies for new releases "Mad Max: Fury Road" and "Jurassic World", Adam Carolla's semi-bio pic "Road Hard" and Mitch's old favourite, "Brain Donors". And Mitch gets to put the boots into the Welsh one more time too!
Look at all the amazing comedians in this 1968 film! Surely, it must be hilarious? You’re first clue that the assumption is wrong? We’re watching it for this podcast. Adjust your listening EQ settings on your audio device from pop to Carol Channing and have a listen to the episode. No streaming of this steaming pile. Watch this film (at your own risk), on Amazon. The cast: Groucho Marx Carol Channing Jackie Gleason Frankie Avalon (who isn’t Frankie Valli) Cesar Romero Slim Pickens Mickey Rooney Burgess Meredith Peter Lawford Richard Kiel (Jaws from the Bond films) Richard Donner (Exidor from Mork & Mindy) And on with the show! Dan & Chris heard of this film’s awful reputation on Gilbert Gottfried’s Amazing Colossal Podcast! Otto Preminger directed this comedy. He sounds like an interesting character. He desperately needs an editor. Reviewer Vincent Canby of the Times wrote a devastating critique. Guess who was on set? Roger Ebert, who shares another look at the Otto & his process. It’s the sixties, so Gleason can’t get away with beating his wife anymore so he pistol whips a hippie. The movie of Batman villains. (Preminger, Romero, Meredith, Gorshin) Carol Channing is a proto-Big Bird. Dan get’s a haircut because of the poster that goes around a corner. Everyone gets their Reagan impression on. Well… Gleason sneaks onto Alcatraz & Dan suggests you visit the park yourself. Austin Pendleton is really great in this film. You may remember him from My Cousin Vinny. Who can do Carol Channing impressions? Ryan Stiles of course. Frank Gorshin plays The Man. No riddle, he’s just The Man at Alcatraz. Is that the apartment from Dcotor Goldfoot? God, Groucho Marx, plays bumper pool with his mistress. Groucho is also part of Gleason’s acid trip as a loose screw, get it? Paul wonders how secure Crazy Hippie Encryption is and Dan answers, “420 bit.” Old men pretending to trip on acid. The garbage song must have inspired Stomp! This movie has a theme song and you don’t want to click this because it “drills into your head.” The best part of the film is the end, because it is over, but also ALL of the credits are sung. Gary Larson, creator of The Far Side, apologizes for making an Ishtar joke. Recommendations:Land of the Lost, Brain Donors and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy. Wake Up Ron Burgundy: The Lost Movie is a movie composed of sub-plots on the cutting room floor from the first film.
