For centuries, the playwright Thomas Kyd has been best known as the author of The Spanish Tragedy, a terrific story of revenge believed to have strongly influenced Shakespeare's Hamlet. And yet, a contemporary referred to Kyd as "industrious Kyd." What happened to the rest of his plays? In this episode, Jacke talks to scholar Brian Vickers about his new book Thomas Kyd: A Dramatist Restored, the first full study of Kyd's life and works, in which Vickers discusses Kyd's accepted canon as well as three additional plays Vickers has newly identified as having been written by Kyd—exciting discoveries that establish him as a major dramatist. PLUS Jonathan D.S. Schroeder (editor of The United States Governed by Six Hundred Thousand Despots: A True Story of Slavery; A Rediscovered Narrative, with a Full Biography, by John Swanson Jacobs) stops by to discuss his choice for the last book he will ever read. The Bible contains a narrative, a story, about God's gracious plan in Christ to redeem us from our sin. Believers are brought into that story. This story isn't something we just know and learn about but we are called to take our place in it. Missions is hard-wired to that story. Rather than thinking of our basis for missions as simply a collection of "missions" texts (and there are many!), the Bible tells a story that spans from one end of Scripture to the other--and you are part of it. In this week's final installment with Brendan Gaughan, he gives his side of the story in the infamous Jim-Smith-can-kiss-my-ass incident, which cost him a $10,000 fine AND the 2003 Craftsman Truck Series championship. After that, Brendan breaks down his lone full-time Cup season with Doug Bobble and Roger Penske, his up-and-down return to the truck series, finding success again with team owner Richard Childress and … finally … how Ryan Newman's wreck and COVID helped convince him that it was time to hang up his helmet … at least when it came to NASCAR.In our second segment, hosts Rick Houston and Steve Waid page through the November 20, 2003 issue of Winston Cup Scene. Matt Kenseth, Brian Vickers and Travis Kvapil are honored as champions of their respective NASCAR divisions at Homestead … with the Busch and Craftsman Truck Series crowns coming down to the wire in HISTORIC season-finale battles.NOBODY'S happy after the truck race, except for Kvapil, due to one of the most chaotic conclusions to a NASCAR title bout EVER. Brendan Gaughan tells rival team owner Jim Smith to kiss his behind on live television and Smith and his driver Ted Musgrave are furious with NASCAR after the final restart.Homestead also marks the final race for RJ Reynolds' title sponsorship of the Winston Cup Series, and Bobby Labonte wins it after Bill Elliott blows a tire on the final lap.Kyle Busch was all set to make his Cup debut, but his entire car winds up getting confiscated by NASCAR. Those who have ascended to the presidency of the United States are products of the environments in which they were born, raised, and educated. Their early experiences usually have a significant effect on how they manage their presidency and the subsequent policy and programs developed under their watch. Lyndon Baines Johnson is a fitting example of that. His presidency was guided in full measure by his upbringing, his personal experiences with poverty and shame and his observation of racism and hate. The National Parks Traveler's Lynn Riddick begins a two-part series on the unique Lyndon B. Johnson National Historical Park, which offers the most complete picture of any American president. Guided by park official Brian Vickers, Lynn takes us through the site's two distinct districts – the Johnson City District and the LBJ Ranch District –to learn about Johnson's compelling cradle-to-grave story and the forces that shaped his life.

Hello and welcome to Ripe Good Scholar. Today we are beginning to get a clearer picture of the Elizabethan theatre scene. It was a place of collaboration and mentoring. Novice writers would hone their craft with the help of more seasoned ones. Writers would also imitate each other and edit each other's work for their own use. This realization has caused scholars in recent years to look more closely at Shakespeare's work and see where he may have collaborated. One unsurprising candidate was Titus Andronicus, easily Shakespeare's most gruesome play, and one of his earliest. The top candidate for co-author is George Peele, a University Wit. Today, Eli and I are going to get to know George Peele and examine the role he may have played in writing Titus Andronicus. For this episode, I read excerpts from Shakespeare Co-author by Brian Vickers and several articles. If you want to check out all my sources, head over to ripegoodscholar.com/ep42. Pastor Brian Vickers preaches from Ecclesiastes on July 4, 2021. Speaker: Brian Vickers
If you like feckless boobs who are also giant crysacks (Megan does not), do we have a book for you! Henry Mackenzie's The Man of Feeling (1771) is a classic sentimental novel with all the trimmings -- a useless protagonist who thinks crying is hot and who can't stop getting conned by every sharp, coxcomb, and failson in London. It's a delightfully ridiculous book, one we suspect is very much in on the joke, and we talk discourses of feeling, sentimental critiques of empire and capital, and the funniest sorry sorry we meant saddest death scene in all of eighteenth-century literature. We read the Oxford edition edited by Brian Vickers with notes and introduction by Stephen Bending and Stephen Bygrave. There's a ton of scholarship on sentiment and the related "cult of sensibility," and we highly recommend both Janet Todd's Sensibility: An Introduction and John Mullan's Sentiment and Sociability: The Language of Feeling in the Eighteenth Century. While people are moving enmasse out of New York City due to covid, one alleged Epstein coconspirator is on the downlow in one of the city’s popular neighbourhoods. Sarah Kellen/Kensington/Bonk/Vickers is living in a penthouse with her husband Brian Vickers, amid rumours she’s trying to cut a deal with law enforcement in the Ghislaine Maxwell case. Kellen is accused of recruiting and scheduling up to six sessions a day in the Palm Beach mansion in the early 2000s. She allegedly prepared the oils and the lotions in the rooms where the sex abuse occurred. According to police, Kellen saw hundreds of girls go up those spiral stairs at Epstein’s Palm Beach home. She’s pleaded the fifth amendment on the Epstein allegations and was one of the beneficiaries of the much-criticised Acousta plea deal. So we may never know her story. New York City is not the first choice under normal circumstances but the covid crisis has seen Epstein alleged coconspirator hide out in a normally conspicuous part of the city, except during covid. We preview Ghislaine Maxwell’s bail hearing set for Tuesday in New York. Her lawyers want her out on jail due to a variety of reasons, such as Covid and her good character. Maxwell’s supporters have offered $5million as bail surety. They say she vigorously denies the charges, intends to fight them, and is entitled to the presumption of innocence," attorneys asserted, adding that she had not attempted to flee the United States following Epstein's arrest and jail suicide last year. Plus we talk about new details of what went down during her arrest. The two of us poke holes in Maxwell’s lawyers claims she's been hiding from journalists and “crazy” people, plus talk about her bank accounts. Why did she wrap her cell phone in tin foil? [56] They were looking for Jesus and saying to one another as they stood in the temple, “What do you think? That he will not come to the feast at all?” [57] Now the chief priests and the Pharisees had given orders that if anyone knew where he was, he should let them know, so that they might arrest him. John 11:55–57 (ESV) "There is probably significance in the fact that he joins the detail that many went up to Jerusalem to purify themselves with the detail that “they were looking for Jesus” (v 56). What Jesus will do at this Passover purifies those who seek him." -Brian Vickers [1] Six days before the Passover, Jesus therefore came to Bethany, where Lazarus was, whom Jesus had raised from the dead. [2] So they gave a dinner for him there. Martha served, and Lazarus was one of those reclining with him at table. John 12:1-2 (ESV) [38] Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. [39] And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. [40] But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, “Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me.” [41] But the Lord answered her, “Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, [42] but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her.” Luke 10:38-42 (ESV) "She understood that Jesus was saying that her harried, depressed, unhappy attitude was separating her from him. She knew that service can be worship, if it is done with the right attitude." -Kent Hughes [3] Mary therefore took a pound of expensive ointment made from pure nard, and anointed the feet of Jesus and wiped his feet with her hair. The house was filled with the fragrance of the perfume. John 12:3 (ESV) "Mary is giving up her rights before the Lord. There is nothing He cannot ask of her. Touching his feet becomes her pledge of unconditional service." -Skip Ryan [4] But Judas Iscariot, one of his disciples (he who was about to betray him), said, [5] “Why was this ointment not sold for three hundred denarii and given to the poor?” John 12:4-5 (ESV) [6] He said this, not because he cared about the poor, but because he was a thief, and having charge of the moneybag he used to help himself to what was put into it. John 12:6 (ESV) “The example of Judas show us how near a man may come to Christ and yet be lost.” -A. W. Pink [7] Jesus said, “Leave her alone, so that she may keep it for the day of my burial. [8] For the poor you always have with you, but you do not always have me.” John 12:7-8 (ESV) [9] When the large crowd of the Jews learned that Jesus was there, they came, not only on account of him but also to see Lazarus, whom he had raised from the dead. [10] So the chief priests made plans to put Lazarus to death as well, [11] because on account of him many of the Jews were going away and believing in Jesus. John 12:9-11 (ESV) [1] And you were dead in the trespasses and sins. Ephesians 2:1 (ESV) [5] even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved. Ephesians 2:5 (ESV) [8] For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, [9] not a result of works, so that no one may boast. [10] For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them. Ephesians 2:8–10 (ESV)
