Every year, the Multnomah County Library chooses one book they hope the whole city of Portland will read. Between January and April, the Library, and their partner organizations, host events based around the themes of the book, and they distribute thousands of free copies—thanks to the Library Foundation—to readers of all ages from across the county. Here at Literary Arts, our role is to bring the author to town for a talk in the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall. This year, the 2025 Everybody Reads selection is the memoir Solito by Javier Zamora. For information about how to engage with the program, visit the Multnomah County Library's web site. I am thrilled to say Javier Zamora will be in Portland on Tuesday, March 11 at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall for the culminating event of the 2025 Everybody Reads Program. For now, let's return to the 2024 Everybody Reads event, featuring Gabrielle Zevin and her novel Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow. Gabrielle Zevin has been steadily publishing fiction for almost two decades and has also written occasional criticism as well as award-winning screenplays. But it was Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow that catapulted her to the stratosphere of literary stardom. It was a #1 New York Times bestseller and spent over 50 weeks on the fiction bestseller list. To be sure, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow and Tomorrow is about video games, and makes a convincing argument for the power and potential of narrative storytelling in video games. But really, it is about making art, and questions about originality, appropriation, and ambition that come with that pursuit. And perhaps more so, it is a love story, about friends and creative partners, and the excitement, joy, tragedy, and betrayal that come with any long relationship. It's about something, I'd wager, we've all been thinking about the past few years: connection. Tickets for Everybody Reads 2025 with Javier Zamora are on sale now! Find your tickets here. Gabrielle Zevin is a New York Times best-selling novelist whose books have been translated into forty languages. Her tenth novel, Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, was a New York Times Best Seller, a Sunday Times Best Seller, and a selection of the Tonight Show's Fallon Book Club. Tomorrow was Amazon.com's #1 Book of the Year, Time Magazine's #1 Book of the Year, a New York Times Notable Book, and the winner of both the Goodreads Choice Award for Fiction and the Book of the Month Club's Book of the Year. Following a twenty-five-bidder auction, the feature film rights to Tomorrow were acquired by Temple Hill and Paramount Studios. The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry also spent many months on the New York Times Best Seller List. A.J. Fikry was honored with the Southern California Independent Booksellers Award for Fiction, the Japan Booksellers' Prize, among other honors. A.J. Fikry is now a feature film with a screenplay by Zevin. She has also written children's books, including the award-winning Elsewhere. She is the screenwriter of Conversations with Other Women (Helena Bonham Carter) for which she received an Independent Spirit Award Nomination for Best First Screenplay. She has occasionally written criticism for the New York Times Book Review and NPR's All Things Considered, and she began her writing career, at age fourteen, as a music critic for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel. Zevin is a graduate of Harvard University. She lives in Los Angeles.
The Rebbe blesses Rabbi Zevin with strength and redemption, acknowledges receiving a Torah publication, and encourages maximizing Yud-Tes Kislev. He references a halachic discussion in Shu”t Kol Mevaser and suggests a 70th birthday gathering to inspire Torah and Chassidus. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/014/003/4920
Regarding the debate over the Megilot HaGenuzot, the Rebbe mentions that he has not yet had the opportunity to study the entire issue. However, at first glance, it appears that the scribe may have been unaware of the rules of malei and chaser. Perhaps this is why the scrolls were hidden https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/011/007/3405

Gabrielle Zevin is a lifelong devotee of video games, which is obvious to readers of her newest book, the bestseller “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow.” The book tells the story of two video game designers who find professional creative and intellectual synergy that doesn’t always match in their personal lives. The book starts from the premise that designing video games is the highest of artistic pursuits. "Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow" is the Multnomah County Everybody Reads 2024 selection, and Zevin joins us to discuss it in front of an audience of students at Grant High School.
Esta semana, desde La Paella Rusa especial arroz con letras, os proponemos una lecturita sencillita para las tardes estivales. En concreto, hablamos de Liberalism at large. The world according to The Economist, de Alexander Zevin (Ed. Verso). See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
Each story should have a source, especially concerning its authenticity, which is crucial for the leaders of the Chasidic movement. People will trust stories that you have verified for accuracy. Sometimes, small changes can resolve potential issues. The Rebbe cites two examples. https://www.torahrecordings.com/rebbe/igroskodesh/011/010/3657
“Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” is a New York Times best-selling book about love, art and video games. The author, Gabrielle Zevin, will be in Minneapolis on Friday to promote the paperback launch of her book two years after release. MPR News reporter Kyra Miles spoke with Zevin ahead of the event. For those who might not know, can you give a quick synopsis in your own words?Zevin: I'm already laughing at that because I've been promoting the book for two years. And it's kind of embarrassing to say that I still find “Tomorrow” somewhat hard to synopsis. So I'll add to that “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow” is the story of Sam Mazur and Sadie Green, who have a three-decade-long friendship and artistic collaboration. And for me, the crux of the story is maybe how difficult it is to connect even though we have ever-increasing means to do so — but the real possibility of making meaningful connections in virtual spaces. So I've recommended this book to a lot of people. But I think something that I always disclaim to people when I recommend it is how perfectly imperfect the characters are. How do you go about creating these flawed but realistic characters? You know, I don't know if I'm trying to create people that are imperfect, but I am trying to create people and people are imperfect. I think there are some people that want to read characters that are maybe better than us in some way, but I am not that reader. I think the thing that moves me most in fiction is the sort of gap between the way we perceive ourselves and the way we perceive others. So what's exciting for you about this paperback launch? It's been two years in hardcover. And it's been great to just see it kind of sell and sell and sell. But with a lower price point, I'm excited that it gets to even more readers, readers who maybe felt resistant to the idea [of] a literary novel about video games, will think, “Hey, now that the price is lower, maybe I'll try a novel about video games.”I read lit-fic, but I am really a romance reader. And while I don't see this book as a romance, would you consider it a love story?I mean, I think all stories are love stories or lack-of-love stories. I think, in a sense, you can find it in even the most like ostensibly just esoteric literary fiction. At core, we're talking about: Were you loved enough? Did you love enough? And so I see all stories as love stories, even as somebody who writes literary fiction. But that said, I think the word romance has a burden that it doesn't need to have, you know. I think the book is not a romance, not in the way people think of romance. But I do think it is about two people who have a romance of the mind, but not a romance of the body. This book originally came out as the world was emerging from a pandemic. And now this paperback is emerging into a world where we have lots of major international conflicts going on. How do you think that will affect first time readers of this book?I think the worlds that my characters find themselves in in the book is the world. It has all of the things in it, not necessarily the particularity of 2024, you know, but it doesn't exist in a world that doesn't have conflict. When the book came out in 2022, there's a little bit that has to do with gun violence in the book, or maybe not a little bit, maybe a significant part of the book. And at the time I was doing interviews, journalists would ask me, “How did you know there would be another gun crime in the U.S. when you wrote this book?” I'm like, “because there's always another gun crime in the U.S.” And so if you write books that are, again, more in the world, I think they they feel more maybe naturally continuous with the way we live right now.I want to ask you what's next. But I also know that the book has been optioned as a movie. How are you thinking everything's gonna fit into a two-hour movie? When we went out with the book, it sold in manuscript — actually, it had its first film offers before we even sold the book — they actually kind of happened at the same time. But I said to my agents that I really thought it should be a limited series. And so of course, the best offers that came back were for movies. I don't feel desperately sad. There are some authors who are very eager to see their characters come to life on screen. But I never felt that way. Even though obviously it would be meaningful, probably financially, it would bring your books to a broader audience, and there are advantages to that happening, but I also just love the way a book can just exist as a book.

Join us as we dive into the wonderfully weird world of video games and, more importantly, their creators. Zevin has really pulled it out ze bag for this one. Also, Paul has the meat sweats from 8 courses of Greek food, and Sarah barely mentions the weather, so it's business as usual in the Reading for Attention studio (our flats), and isn't that just music to your gorgeous little lugs? Anyway, love you. We'll be back soon with our correct opinions on Eliza Clark's hotly anticipated SOPHMORE novel, Penance. Spooky songs and haunted hugs

Gabrielle Zevin's most recent novel “Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow” draws its title from what Zevin calls one of the bleakest speeches in all of Shakespeare, as Macbeth contemplates life's monotony and meaninglessness. But to one of her characters, the soliloquy is hopeful, and it expresses the essence of a video game: “the idea that if you keep playing, you could win. No loss is permanent, because nothing is permanent, ever.” We talk to Zevin about the video games, art and friendships that animate the novel, and why California occupies a special place in it. This segment originally aired January 20, 2023. Guests: Gabrielle Zevin, author, "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

Gabrielle Zevin is the best selling author of ten novels - the latest of which is about video games, art, friendship, love, identity and overcoming. Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow tells the story of two childhood friends as they reunite in adulthood to create video games. The book has been a runaway success, and Gabrielle Zevin is currently writing the screenplay, to be developed into a feature film by Temple Hill and Paramount Studios. Several of her books have already been adapted for screen and directed by Hans Canosa, Zevin's longtime partner. Gabrielle Zevin will be appearing at the Auckland Writers' Festival later this month.
The book of the moment for today's episode is Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Just a forewarning for those of you listening, this is NOT a spoiler-free zone. We will be discussing this book in all of its glory, which of course includes revealing the ending. Gabrielle Zevin is an American author and screenwriter. Zevin was born in New York City. Zevin's father, who is American-born, has Ashkenazi Jewish, Russian, Lithuanian, and Polish ancestry. Her mother was born in Korea and emigrated to the United States when she was 9 years old. The two met in high school in Connecticut and later worked for IBM. She grew up in Boca Raton, Florida and graduated from Spanish River Community High School in 1996. She enrolled at Harvard University, where she studied English with a concentration in American Literature. While at Harvard, she met her partner, Hans Canosa and graduated in 2000. For nearly a decade, Zevin lived in Manhattan before moving to Los Angeles in 2012, where she presently lives with Canosa. Welcome back to NovelClass, your book club podcast! Joining host Dave Pezza on today's episode author, podcast sherpa, and NovelClass regular Daniel Ford. Ford returns to discuss Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow by Gabrielle Zevin. Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow was published on July 5, 2022 by Knopf and is Zevin's tenth novel. Set in Boston and Los Angeles in the late ‘09s and early 2000s, the book chronicles the friendships and love affairs of Sadie Green and Sam Mauser from their first meeting in a children's hospital rec room to successful video game developers. Through their friendship, Zevin tells a decades-long coming of age story and explores the deeper understanding of true friendship and self-realization. Please enjoy our discussion of Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow.
[Recorded in June 2022. ]In the second episode of the season, we discuss how foreign policy intellectuals from a breadth of political views have responded to the war over these last four months. From IR theorists like Wertheim and Kupchan to the more left-oriented Alexander Zevin at the New Left Review and Thomas Meaney in The Guardian, we've noticed some patterns in the discussion that we've tracked since starting the podcast. From questions about the stability of US hegemony to the Left's abandonment of anti-imperialist politics, the writers on display here give a deep view of the intellectual debates that war has re-energized. While we don't agree with everything here, we chose a collection of articles that have a general feature in common, and that's the urgency of restraint in American military affairs. We seem to have arrived at a moment where restraint seems impossible, and yet perhaps never more important than right now. Gabrielle Zevin's new novel, “Tomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow,” is set in the world of video game design, and follows two friends named Sadie and Sam as they collaborate on what becomes a very successful game.“A friend of mine described the book as being what it's like to co-parent something that's not a child,” Zevin says on this week's podcast. “Sam and Sadie, they are more intimate with each other than anyone else in their lives. Yet they aren't spouses, and he's not her child, and yet this is the most important relationship that both of them have. So I wanted to write about that: What if the most important person in your life was really your colleague and your friend?”Morgan Talty visits the podcast to discuss his debut story collection, “Night of the Living Rez,” which is set on the Penobscot Indian Nation reservation in Maine, where Talty was raised.“I was very much aware that Indigenous fiction tries to perform for a white readership, or a largely white readership, and there are instances in books that I've admired by Native writers that I could see this. And I always wanted to shy away from it, because I didn't want to keep feeding into that type of storytelling,” Talty says. “Throughout the book there's less association with Indigeneity in the characters, so it's the characters who are front and center, it's their human nature that's front and center, as opposed to maybe something cultural.”Also on this week's episode, Elizabeth Harris talks about how #BookTok has become a dominant driver of fiction sales; and Dwight Garner and Alexandra Jacobs talk about what people are reading. Since 1843, The Economist has been the single most devoted and influential champion of liberalism anywhere in the world. But what exactly is liberalism, and what does the output of the Economist tell us about it? To discuss this, Aaron Bastani spoke to Alexander Zevin, author of Liberalism at Large: The World According to the […]
The Economist is a curious publication. It always takes a point of view (as opposed to the all-the-news-that’s-fit-to-print approach). It maintains a uniform voice (editors and writers are typically handpicked from the same elite British universities, and rarely are there author bylines). And it has lasted a long time, originating back in London’s free-trade debates of the 1840s and continuing to be one of the most widely read magazines in the world. The Economist was a guiding hand in debates over imperialism, decolonization, and globalization. For all these reasons, The Economist also provides a useful window through which to peer into the history of liberalism. This is exactly what Alexander Zevin does in his perspicuous and provocative new book Liberalism at Large: The World According to the Economist (Verso Books, 2019). By examining The Economist, Zevin, an assistant professor of history at City University of New York and an editor at The New Left Review, helps us see what he calls “really existing liberalism”––that is, a liberalism that rooted for empire, embraced finance, and has always wielded an ambivalence towards democracy. This is a book that we will be talking about for a long time. Dexter Fergie is a PhD student of US and global history at Northwestern University. In Theory co-host Simon Brown interviews Alexander Zevin, an assistant professor of history at the City University of New York, about his new book, Liberalism at Large: The World According to the Economist (Verso, 2019).
In conversation with Alexander Zevin In Liberalism at Large: The World According to The Economist (2019), Alexander Zevin – assistant professor of history at City University of New York and an editor at New Left Review – conducts an exacting audit of The Economist's history as a mouth-piece of free-market liberalism and examines the magazine's shaping role in the ascent of financial capitalism. Here, he is joined by Masoud Golsorkhi to discuss the book. They talk about the tight coupling between liberalism and imperialism, “radical centrism” and why Oxbridge graduates with funny haircuts have such a thing for war making.

On The Economist and the contradictions of global liberalism. Alexander Zevin joins us to discuss his work on the 176 year history of the magazine that has accompanied liberalism's global expansion. Has it just reflected the world or has it actually influenced politics? How has The Economist balanced democracy against the interests of finance and the needs of empire? And is the magazine suffering from N.O.B.S.? Alexander Zevin's Liberalism at Large (Verso) is the first critical biography of the Economist newspaper, which, since 1843, has been the most tireless – and internationally influential – champion of the liberal cause anywhere in the world. But what exactly is liberalism, and how has its message evolved?Zevin presents a history of liberalism on the move, confronting the challenges that classical doctrine left unresolved – the rise of democracy, the expansion of empire, the ascendancy of finance – holding a mirror to the politics and personalities that helped shape a liberal world order now under increasing strain. Zevin was in conversation with Tariq Ali. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
