What does it mean to be truly funny? We often associate the word ‘funny' with comedy and making people laugh. But it can also mean being witty, incisive ironic, playful, teasing, or delivering little moments of truth. On this episode, I'm speaking to comedy writer Paul Dornan, whose new company, True Funny, helps people discover what makes them funny — in the loosest sense of the word — and how they can maximise that in the way they present themselves. Not to make them artificially funny in an [inster funny joke here] type way, but naturally and authentically. In our discussion, we explored how Paul came to become a comedy writer, working with comedy legend Barry Humphries. He explains how comedy was an inherent part of his family and how that led him to his career. We explore what makes comedy work and why being funny is all about being human.Paul shares some of his thoughts about how being more authentic can make us more engaging and how the increasing power of cognitive technology means we all need to be more human. To find out more about Paul and his company, True Funny: https://truefunny.co.uk/During our discussion, Paul referred to a number of comedians and comedy shows:Barry Humphries and Barry's comedy alter ego Dame Edna Everage: https://www.dame-edna.com/A clip that Paul referred to where Dame Edna speaks to former UK Prime Minister Ted Heath. Nick recently made the surprising discovery that Mrs. Brown's Boys continues to attract millions of viewers each week on prime-time television. So, we asked ourselves, why are there films, music and television programmes that appear to be universally loathed, but are inexplicably popular? Are there any identifiable traits or patterns that can lead us closer to explaining this phenomenon? In this week's podcast, we discuss things that seem universally hated but are popular. Is it the result of a marketing ploy by film, television and public relation executives, or is it simply a mismatch between the cultural status of a particular product and its perceived level of quality? We discuss the Nash equilibrium, try-hards, shy Tories, Kanye West and Mrs. Browns Boys. Finally, we share some of the guilty pleasures in our cultural consumption. Hi! My name is Terry J. Aman and this installment marks my 82nd episode of VideoFuzzy, reporting the progress I've made in cataloging more than 3,000 VHS transfers and digital recordings. For this installment, titled "Expanding My Mystical Center," my Fuzzy Feature highlights the pilot episode of Ryan Murphy's "Glee." After some soul-searching, I have determined, 82 episodes in, Ryan Murphy's works represent a third chakra at the mystical center of my media collection, that challenge now designated as "Studio Murphy Under." I explore several cross connections through "Glee" and other Ryan Murphy productions, as well as several movies and shows I watched in my classic and current collections, including Greta Garbo in 1933's "Queen Christina," and through the 1960 Korean language film "The Housemaid."  In my Classic Collection (VHS-to-DVD), comments on Tim Roth's "Funny Games" from 2007, "Drop Dead Diva," catalog debuts for "Glee," "Drawn Together" and "Vampire Diaries." Also, "Alias," "Warehouse 13," "Medium," "Eureka," "Prison Break," "Mad Men," "Grey's Anatomy" and "Rescue Me." Tracking information from an episode of "Six Feet Under" I found out they made a TV movie of "Fargo" starring Edie Falco and I am excited to track that down, along with indie film "In a World" and maybe 2005's "Bobby." Also, Bravo's presentation of Madonna's "Confessions" tour in Wembley Stadium from August 2007. In my Current Collection (direct-to-DVD), I watched Elizabeth Taylor in "The Night Watch," "Butterfield 8" and "Cat on a Hot Tin Roof." I watched "The Apartment," "Harper," "Ragdoll," "Hotel Rwanda," "Malcolm X," "Antebellum," "The Raven," "Hotel Artemis," "Den of Thieves" "Gigi," "Carmen Jones," "Brigadoon," "The Thief of Bagdad," "Citizen Kane," "Executive Suite," "Queen Christina," "The Housemaid," "Knives Out," "Better Call Saul" and "Kung Fu." In What I've Been Watching, I checked out Michelle Yeoh in "Everything Everywhere All At Once," "Free Guy," "The Crazy Ones" and Amazon's reboot of "The Kids in the Hall." This segues directly into my streaming activities, including "Mrs. Brown's Boys," "Shakespeare & Hathaway," Hugh Laurie's Britbox adaptation of Agatha Christie's "Why Didn't They Ask Evans?" and "The Ipcriss Files" on AMC+. Also, check out a podcast by Caroline Crampton called "Shedunnit," which came to me highly recommended by "All About Agatha" co-host Kemper Donovan and I heartly agree. She'll be making an appearance shortly on "All About Agatha," and both are well worth a listen. I celebrate five years of VideoFuzzy with a Zoom interview I conducted in March with actor, writer and host of "The Reduced Shakespeare Podcast," Austin Tichenor. He shared comments on appearances and experiences with shows in my collection including "Close to Home," "The West Wing," "Nip/Tuck" and "The Practice." My thanks to Austin Tichenor both for his time, and for the care he brings to the characters he creates and brings to life. Finally, I make my Bismarck stage debut as the nutty Dr. Caius in Director Erin Weichel's adaptation of William Shakespeare's "The Merry Wives of Windsor" for Capitol Shakespeare, now in its 15th year. The show goes up July 20-24 at 7 p.m. near the North Dakota Heritage Center. Admission is free; a freewill offering is collected. Come out and enjoy the show!

Madea is back! After retiring the classic character in 2019, Tyler Perry has brought her back for A Madea Homecoming on Netflix. Perry is, of course, reprising the role of the title character, and is accompanied by longtime Madea players Cassi Davis-Patton, David Mann and Tamela Mann, as well as some exciting additions to the cast. The critics have already seen the movie, which is now available for streaming on Netflix, so let's check out what they have to say about Perry's newest movie. Tyler Perry told audiences to "get ready," as A Madea Homecoming features the extended family all coming together for the title character's great-grandson's college graduation. You can imagine drama quickly ensues as secrets start to come out, but Madea is determined not to let anything ruin the celebration. Tyler Perry's latest offering for Netflix, A Madea Homecoming, brings the family together for a celebration. For those familiar with the gruff grandma's roots on stage will recognize both the structuring and the casual combativeness of this family dynamic. For newcomers, it's an introduction to an established ensemble in a way that doesn't feel like it is leaving them out. But it's 2022, and when it comes to issues like theft of Black homes due to prohibitive property taxes (aka gentrification) and reallocation of tax dollars into programs that positively impact communities instead of police departments (aka defund the police), there's just no room for flippancy or slanted messaging. Perry's style smacks too much of stunted respectability politics and inserts the topics into the narrative in ways that "attack" the messenger and overly simplifies (or ignores) the message. Ultimately, Madea's 12th movie outing is nothing new and raises the question of whether coming out of retirement was a good call. A Madea Homecoming is now streaming exclusively on Netflix.I love all madea movies this one was gross and weird as hell. Bad jokes super mainstream. Worst tyler perry work, dont waste your time trying to watch its got weird. Makes me wanna never watch another tyler perry movie, the worse it gets just like this review basically just do not waste your time, i know he gets a lot of hate and i never thought he deserved it until now.★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

First off...happy new year....I thought I might have to call you "Sir" Vince but I noticed you never made the Queen's honours list.....so you can't join Knights of the Realm like Sir Cliff...Sir Ringo...Sir Van Morrison....or Sir Tony Blair and even more hard to believe Sir Ashley Banjo ....maybe next year....I would suggest you latch on to an act which will definitely end up being knighted.....Ant,Dec and Vince? The TV over New Year was abysmal....fortunately I am able to store programmes so I can watch stuff which is actually of interest...which doesn't include Soaps...reality TV...constant repeats of rubbish like Mrs Brown's Boys or boring cookery programmes which, to me, are about as interesting as the Scottish football results or indeed The Ashes....thank goodness for Bargain Hunt which I do enjoy and documentaries on stars I have admired over the years..e.g. Dean Martin....Freddy Mercury...ABBA...Bing Crosby etc....when everyone is complaining about the tripe that is on the telly you would think someone in office would listen....but as they keep saying "we think we've got it right"...so that's O.K. then......there is a satellite channel called "Challenge"....on New Years day they had 10 hours of The Chase.....10 HOURS of Bradley Walsh!!....he's GOT to be up for a knighthood.....even if it's just for the world record appearances on TV. One good thing about it all is I no longer go out with my band on New Years Eve to entertain the masses....since leaving school I played 50 consecutive New Years Eve gigs....which were always the best paid gigs of the year but required the most effort facing three or four hundred people who have paid through the nose and expected a good night....no pressure then......I still get asked to do new years eve gigs.....but prefer an early night. I'm still wondering why England thinks it is different from Wales,Ireland and Scotland....the latter three carrying out sensible precautions in an attempt to curb the spread of the virus.....and we have asked the folk of the three countries not to come over the border....as if!!....the Scots and the Welsh came in in coach loads....surprise surprise......oh yes we must save businesses from losing money....I wonder how many politicians are connected to these businesses.......so we will see another spike in infections...and so it goes. I watched a programme all about Jack Charlton and his success with the Irish football team....it was a great programme made more interesting by the fact that I met Jack back in the early 70s when we were on holiday in Palma...we were staying in an apartment block and Jack and his family were next door....we all went out for meals and drinks and we became good mates...he was a great bloke....and his wife was a delight.....the programme went through his life where he eventually got dementure and sadly died 18 months ago....a great man and a privilege to have known. For the "one of the worst records ever made" spot this week I have nominated the destruction of the song "My Way" by The Sex Pistols......it is over 4 minutes long so I suggest fading it out after one minute if you can stand it for that long.

Everyone Dies In Sunderland: A podcast about growing up terrified in the eighties and nineties

Remember Christmas TV before the BBC gave up?You know they have. Even people who actually like Call the Midwife and Mrs Brown's Boys are like, “what, again?”Anyway, back when Everyone Dies In Sunderland is set, Terry Wogan would come on at Christmas and present a show called “Auntie's Christmas Bloomers”, which was like a gag reel for the entire BBC that year. Yes, an entire hour of one of the cast of the Lion and the Unicorn fluffing their lines and saying bugger. There was a funny once when Neil Pearson is doing a tough police interrogation scene in Between the Lines, but you can hear a tiny electronic version of Greensleeves in the background and he says “would you like an ice cream?” while staying in character. That was funny. What I'm trying to say is, what we are presenting to you here is mechanically reclaimed off cuts from series 1 and 2, including!·         “My ceramic Romana 2 always due east Toni Basil!”·         Claire's paranormal fears!·         “Fucking Gulf War!”·         Nostalgia for the Suez Crisis! ·         “I'm the ruffian with the tank and the gun and the chicken chucker”·         Claire saying “chickens” for no reason at all!·         An extraordinarily highbrow joke about Ronald Harewood's 1980 play “The Dresser” ·         “I haven't wanked off a pig since 2006”·         More poetry from Gareth! In the words of Andrew Falkous from McLusky “there is a reason why this material was previously unreleased”

Marconi may have invented wireless, and the wireless, but he didn't see broadcasting coming. A special for episode 38, as we bring to life an interview with Guglielmo Marconi on what he made of broadcasting, two months into the BBC's existence. Our source is Popular Wireless magazine, January 27th 1923 issue. Read along if you like (plus bits from December 1922) - thank you to WorldRadioHistory.com for housing this long lost magazine. Needless to say, we don't claim any rights to the wonderful old magazine, and while we THINK it's either public domain or its rights owners are untraceable, we humbly defer to whoever DOES own the rights - and are ever grateful to the original journalists, editors, owners... and of course to Marconi himself. Given that Popular Wireless magazine was full of ads for radios and parts - and given the BBC then and now is ad-free - we thought it might be fun to bring some of those ads to life too, thanks to listeners who've sent in recordings. Applause for Gordon Bathgate, Alan Stafford, Andrew Barker, Paul Hayes, Lovejit Dhaliwal, Neil Jackson, Philip Rowe, Richard Kenny, Wayne Clarke, and my kids. There's a grateful thanks to Radio Times for making us their Podcast of the Week - and a little more about the pictures they featured of radio's female pioneers (see below for links to episodes about them). We wrap up with a summary of what the BBC has planned for its BBC100 season, now that its centenary programming has been announced - everything from Dimbleby to Horrible Histories.   OTHER THINGS WE MENTION: CRH News - Andy Stephens has some lovely Marconi history videos and features on his Youtube channel. If you know your Paso Doble from your Foxtrot and winter weekends aren't complete without a glimpse of the coveted glitterball and the tears and triumphs of a dance-off, then you'll be very familiar with Ryan McShane. The Lurgan native is one of the professional dancers on Ireland's Dancing With The Stars since the show began in 2017, where he has taken his celebrity partners through their paces before facing the scrutiny of both judges and viewers alike. For this week's podcast, Ryan spills the beans on how the audition process at Britains Got Talent really works and what it's like behind the scenes on Dancing with the Stars. The talented dancer has had plenty of highs and lows on DWTS. He survived three dance-offs with Erin McGregor – the sister of UFC fighter Conor – more than any other professional in the history of the show. He received three perfect 10s in the final of the first series with actress Denise McCormack. They didn't win but Ryan won the heart of his model girlfriend Thalia Heffernan who was also a contestant. Ryan was also partnered with B*Witched singer Sinead O'Carroll and Mrs Brown's Boys star Eilish O'Carroll, who he says was one of the nicest human beings he has ever met. Ryan fills us in on the secret to getting the best from his students – be they celebrities or kids or adults who teaches ballroom and Latin to. He tells us what his favourite dance is and which is the hardest to learn. Ryan tells us about life in lockdown with Thalia and their two dogs. And what the future holds for them since Thalia signed for IMG – one of the biggest modelling agencies in the world.

Did you know that in 2013 Status Quo made a film? A film in which they are chased around Fiji by gangsters, stopping only to play ukulele versions of their biggest hits? Did you know it was directed by the Stunt Arranger from Mrs Brown's Boys, and the supporting cast is comprised solely of members of his family? Of course you didn't. You're normal decent people. You're watching the latest Suranne Jones 9 o'clock potboiler. A good job, then, that the Stalemates are here to pick up the slack. Because not only have they seen Bula Quo, John Stalemate actually owns it. Yes, the Stalemates are back - in the same room for the first time in two years and their excitement is palpable. Wine has been sloshed about, voices are raised, and opinions are aired like so much damp laundry. And between us we have a quantity of sopping linen. Find out that Joe was a teenage Quo fancier, what the band mean by "a polish", and hear a spirited defence of "Carry on Abroad" from the English Stalemate. Obviously. We're back. We're loud. We're nicher than ever. NB May contain factual innacuracies pertaining to classic tv cop show Ironside.

The two John's are joined by regulars from this season Donald, Scott and Tony plus Krys makes a welcome return and we have the star of Mr Brown's Boys in Iain from The Famous Tartan Army Magazine. It's been 23 years since we qualifies for a tournament but even longer since we were last in the Euros. Once again we've been paired with the Auld Enemy and some familiar faces in Croatia and Czech Republic. It's been that long since we last qualified that podcasts weren't even a thing. The podcast covers predictions in terms of who will line up for Scotland in the first game. Can we get past the group stage for the first time in our history? There is a belief around the players and fans that we can possibly do something special. Can we dare to dream? It's been a long journey and one that we didn't maybe believe would happen but we're a team which has been transformed under the leadership of Saint Steve as we're now calling him. It appears like it will be an open tournament with games spread across Europe but we make our predictions on who will win and what players are in the running for the golden boot. Favourite Scotland tops, Euro memories, songs and much more are all up for discussion as the excitement builds to Monday. The podcast concludes with a 7 a side team from the upcoming tournament. He's laying into Hertford, as is only right, but along with an insecure Ally, threatened by his demotion in the credits chats about the terrible event that is about to hit the UK (6 more years of Mrs Brown's Boys), how to get billions off the husband of MacKenzie Scott's ex-husband, whether you can use a mask of your partner to cheat on your partner and Robbie Williams being poisoned by fish. Also the Duke of York has some more accusations to face and Sally and Rich are the new Meghan and Harry and Cocky Carrot has his (unseeing?) eye on a lovely girlfriend. Plus Peter Dibdin has some home truths for female Stevie. Not all your favourites make it in this week, but surely that one has to? Doesn't he?
