Some school buildings in England have been forced to close or do urgent repairs because they're built with a potentially crumbling material, reinforced autoclave aerated concrete, known as RAAC. Lightweight and cheap, RAAC was widely used during the post-war building boom of the 1950s, 60s and 70s. But it has a limited shelf-life, which experts have been aware of for the last 30 years. And poor maintenance of buildings has added to the risks of sudden and catastrophic collapse. But are schools just the tip of the iceberg? David Aaronovitch asks how widespread is the risk – and what structural solutions are available for schools, hospitals and other buildings that contain RAAC? David Aaronovitch talks to: Prof Phil Purnell, Professor of Materials and Structures, University of Leeds; Laura McInerney, education journalist, public speaker and co-founder of Teacher Tapp; Adrian Tagg, Associate Professor in Building Surveying at Reading University and a current practising chartered buildings surveyor; Sergio Cavalaro, Professor of Infrastructure Systems at the School of Architecture, Building and Civil Engineering, Loughborough University.Production: Ben Carter, Kirsteen Knight, Sally Abrahams Production Co-ordinator: Sophie Hill and Debbie Richford Sound: Graham Puddifoot Editor: Richard Vadon(Correction: In this programme we said that 100 schools in the UK had closed due to issues with RAAC. This is incorrect. Although RAAC has been identified in more than 100 schools, most of them have remained open)

MPs returned to Westminster after their summer break, but the same can't be said for thousands of children expected in classrooms for the Autumn term – due to the crumbling concrete crisis. More than 100 schools stayed shut on Monday due to safety fears about reinforced autoclaved aerated concrete - or RAAC – while the education secretary Gillian Keegan was caught on camera complaining about not being thanked for doing a "f***ing good job" over it all. On the Sky News Daily, Rob Powell speaks to Adrian Tagg, Building Surveying lead at the University of Reading about how far the crisis may spread. Plus, Sky's Sophy Ridge joins Rob to talk about the political fallout of the RAAC crisis, Labour's reshuffle and the possibility of a new by-election, as her new show The Politics Hub begins on Monday evening. S2E15 The SurveYOUR podcast Special Feature – The Levitt Review - Part 1‘RICS Levitt Review – Part 1 – Introduction & Background'The Levitt Review has been a pivotal moment in our institutions 150+ year history and essential membership reading to reflect on what has gone before and the amazing opportunity of what lies ahead. However, if you cannot stomach reading the 450+ page report, but would really like to know the detail, with some bonus reflection…  Well, James and Jon have embarked on a mission to provide an audio / podcast version just for you!  There will be quite a few episodes with James and Jon, and some amazing guests, as they work their way through the detail.James and Jon were part of the GC19 group who supported the 4 NED's that were dismissed and also pursued mistruths and incorrect press releases about the information and awareness provided to the GC19 members.  Needless to say, now vindicated and apologised to by RICS, the experience is still very raw and conjures up a myriad of emotions as the boys reflect on the experience. It is worthy of note that James and Jon will reflect on the past but are most keen to stare into the future and see what an amazing institution we can build upon the lessons learnt from the Levitt Review. As always, the SurveYOUR podcast is a joy to produce, and this episode is a brilliant opportunity for James and Jon to do what they do best… have a jolly good chat! Please leave us your comments and don't forget to subscribe. Enjoy  Linkswww.survpod.comwww.twitter.com/survpodwww.instagram.com/survpod

This time round we have an average score jumping from 5.5 to 8.3 which is quite large, but not unexpected, as the anticipation of the Final Assessment increases and the big day approaches. Our final episode in the ‘Running The Gauntlet' series will be post assessment and post result, which we are looking forward to.  We wish Sam all the best.  As always, the SurveYOUR podcast is a joy to produce, and this episode is a brilliant opportunity for James, Jon to do what they do best… have a jolly good chat! Please leave us your comments and don't forget to subscribe. Enjoy  Linkswww.survpod.comwww.twitter.com/survpodwww.instagram.com/survpod

How to push past barriers being a woman in a man's world Trust Yourself Use your ‘labels’ to your advantage Speak up Talk from a point of evidence Today we are chatting to a Chartered Construction Manager who has 35 years construction experience. They are a qualified Building Surveyor who graduated with a Degree in Building Surveying from Sheffield nearly 30 years ago, and can also add Asbestos Surveyor and Access Auditor to their list of qualifications.   Elaine Armitage is proud to say she was Chair of the Chartered Institute of Building for Leeds and  West Yorkshire and her passion for the construction industry is clear when you hear her talk.  I wanted to check out her experiences of working in a male dominated environment and we chat about the barriers that some women can face and what they can do about it - there is a strong message of the importance of authenticity and using the strengths and traits that you already have rather than feeling like you have to be someone you are not.   Elaine supports individuals who want to make a career in construction, she says “seeing an apprentice or young professional reach the goal gives me the same sense of pride as watching my own children develop and grow.  I don’t have all the answers but am prepared to give my time to support others where I can” - stay tuned to listen to an incredible woman who really does ooze down to earth 'yorkshireness' and shares some great tips on how to push past those barriers that might be in your way whether self imposed or in your industry. “I like to get my hands dirty - people think you are fragile but I am not” - Elaine   Don’t forget you can get my monthly NEWSLETTER that shares the latest around the gender pay gap, book recommendations and good practices that are happening all over the place that support more women to step up and be recognised for the value they bring.   Get yours by clicking >> https://www.gemmastow.com/newsletter or book a chat  https://calendly.com/gemmastow-1/call-with-gemma #Resources Take the Test > How good is your visibility and personal branding?  http://bit.ly/visibility-takethetest    Get the White Paper ‘Visibility at Work: The Importance of Self Promotion for Women’s Career Progression:   https://bit.ly/WP2020podcast     Book a call with Gemma:   https://calendly.com/gemmastow-1/call-with-gemma     Get the newsletter:   https://www.gemmastow.com/newsletter Connect with your host Gemma Stow: Website: https://www.gemmastow.com/ LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/gemmastow/ Twitter: https://twitter.com/gemmastow Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/nomorehidingpodcast   Connect with guest Elaine Armitage: LinkedIn: https://www.linkedin.com/in/elaine-armitage-mciob-1542551a/
