S4E3 The SurveYOUR Podcast – APC Assessor Feedback – Room for Improvement Phew! That felt good. James and Jon get the frustrations of poor final assessment attending APC Candidates off their collective Assessor chests. Some 40+ assessments between them this session (1, 2022) and the experience was not all good. The boys are seasoned APC Assessor/Chairs with some 35+ years of assessing experience between them and probably in excess of 3,000 assessments delivered. Plus, Jon has trained over 8,000 assessors to date. They are also passionate and committed about how they deliver the APC assessment process and WANT candidates to pass. This podcast is a serious but well-mannered rant about the massive ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT that candidates and their counsellors need to hear and smarten up their delivery so the assessment can be less of a car crash and more of a sailing home with flying colours. If you have any thoughts, views, or differences of opinion, then get in touch and come along for a chat. Stāsta Latvijas Mākslas akadēmijas Mākslas vēstures institūta vadošā pētniece Kristiāna Ābele 1901. un 1902. gadā Vilhelma Purvīša gleznas intensīvi ceļoja gan pa lielizstādēm Vācijā, Austrijā un Francijā, gan personālizstāžu turnejā Vācijā, autoram izpelnoties gan vairākas tautiešu un novadnieku lepnumam glaimojošas lielizstāžu medaļas, gan – jo svarīgāk – atzinīgus kritiķu vērtējumus, kuros īpaši cildināta viņa meistarība sniega gleznošanā. Divi no visvairāk atzinības guvušajiem darbiem – “Ziemeļu nakts” un “Marta vakars” – atrodas Latvijas Nacionālā mākslas muzeja krājumā. Jau 1899. gada decembrī kolēģis Frīdrihs Morics Rīgas Mākslas biedrības salona eksponātu iespaidā pauda pārliecību, ka Purvītis pieder pie Krievijas labākajiem “sniega gleznotājiem”, un paredzēja, ka arī ārzemēs reti kurš spēj viņam līdzināties. Vācijas un Austrijas preses atsauksmes 1901. un 1902. gadā liecina, ka šis viedoklis tolaik nebija lokālpatriotisks pārspīlējums. Purvīša izcilību šajā nozarē daudzināja ne tikai Berlīnes baltietis Jūliuss Nordens, īstajā uzvārdā Haselblats, kas viņa gleznas pieskaitīja pie labākajiem ziemeļu ziemas attēlojumiem, kādi jelkad redzēti. Ludvigs Pīčs Berlīnē atzīmēja, ka sniegs gan gaismā, gan ēnā ir gleznots tik patiesos toņos, kas neatpaliek no norvēģa Frica Teulova sasniegumiem. Frics fon Ostīni Minhenē norādīja, ka abas rīdzinieka Purvīša ziemas ainavas pieder pie “izcilākajiem dabasskatiem visā Stikla pilī”. XII Vīnes Secesijas izstādes apskatā laikrakstā Wiener Zeitung Purvītis bija nodēvēts par “krievu Fjestadu” un viņa darbi aplūkoti starptautiskā Ziemeļeiropas kopainas pietuvinājumā: “Zviedru, krievu un somu ledus un sniega ainavisti – Fjestads, Purvītis, Gallens – kā īsti glezniecības dzejnieki iegremdējas visās savas ziemeļu dzimtenes noskaņās un ar dziļu izjūtu atveido tās sniegoto, mēnessgaismas apspīdēto ziemas nakšu lielo, klusējošo mieru.” Vēstulē no Berlīnes žurnālā Kunstchronik par Purvīti rakstīja, ka savā jomā – sniega glezniecībā – viņam gandrīz nav konkurentu: “Viņš vienlīdz meistarīgi glezno savas dzimtenes balto ziemas ietērpu visās stadijās: kā plānu, gaišu rudens uzklātu lakatu, kā biezu, pūkainu un mīkstu vilnas segu, kas metra biezumā guļ pār zemi, un kā jaunavīgās marta zemes vieglo līgavas kleitiņu, pirms saulainais pavasaris šo kautrīgo segacīti ir apņēmīgi ieslēdzis savās skavās.”

S2E24 The SurveYOUR podcast Special Feature – The Levitt Review - Part 7 (finale)‘RICS Levitt Review – Part 7 – David Sandbrook FRICSWe hope you have enjoyed all of the previous 6 parts of our Levitt Review Podcast. James and Jon were delighted to host the Levitt Review podcast finale, part 7, with David Sandbrook FRICS, Governing Council member and Chair of RICS Levitt Review Recommendation Steering Group (SteerCo2, The Sequel).David joined the podcast as our first Minerals Surveyor! The boys had a great chat with David about his role and oversight of the Levitt Review recommendations. His experience in the industry and Governing council makes him absolutely the right person for the job.In addition to David's new role, the discussion was littered with interesting experiences, canaries, ‘O' and ‘A' Level Surveying, Derby Mountain Rescue and the fantastic news that David's son (Gareth) has recently achieved his Charter MRICS.As James and Jon bring this Levitt Review series to a close, David's insights were invaluable to help us understand the work going on behind the scenes to rebuild our institution. Rest assured this is not the last time you have heard from David…Our thanks to David for spending time with us reflecting and looking to the future. The commitment and hard work David and his GC colleagues are putting in over the next few months can only have a positive outcome for our Institution. Thank you.The Levitt Review has been a pivotal moment in our institutions 150+ year history and essential membership reading to reflect on what has gone before and the amazing opportunity of what lies ahead.James and Jon have embarked on a mission to provide an audio / podcast version just for you! There will be quite a few episodes with James and Jon, and some amazing guests, as they work their way through the detail.James and Jon were part of the GC19 group who supported the 4 NED's that were dismissed and also pursued mistruths and incorrect press releases about the information and awareness provided to the GC19 members. A podcast littered with unique insights and some great anecdotes, it was a pleasure and honour to be able to discuss so candidly Nick's experience, from inside GC and throughout the Levitt review process. S2E14 The SurveYOUR podcast Special Feature – Running the Gauntlet - Part 5‘APC Final Assessment Preparation – Homeward Bound'Now Sam has achieved the deadline, deadlines, deadline, we have caught up with him again to discuss his revision progress and what he is doing to get prepared for his APC Final Assessment Interview in a few weeks.Sam is still putting James and Jon to shame with his exercise regime which in turn is helping him keep his focus, as well as, undertaking mock interviews, question and answer sessions and presentation practice whilst he juggles day to day business and personal commitments too. Again, whilst it is great to chat, we have very little more to guide and advise and our time in the podcast gives us a moment to continue to encourage Sam in these last few weeks. As we bring the podcast to a close, we cast our eye to the steadying force throughout the ‘Running the Gauntlet series' and that is the SurveYOUR podcast, state of the art, relax-o-meter…. This time round we have an average score jumping from 5.5 to 8.3 which is quite large, but not unexpected, as the anticipation of the Final Assessment increases and the big day approaches. Our final episode in the ‘Running The Gauntlet' series will be post assessment and post result, which we are looking forward to. We wish Sam all the best. There's nothing like speaking to a fellow surveyor to get you excited about what's coming in the industry. This week I invited Jen Lemen onto the podcast because she always knows what's going on with the RICS and changes to the profession… I have to be honest and say I'm sometimes behind here as I dread reading long guidance notes and practice statements!! My favourite part of this conversation was imagining what the property industry is going to look like in 5 years time. It's a Friday afternoon, sun's out, and across their virtual desk James and Jon are having one of those truly random conversations, fuelled by a recent article in RICS Modus (“Buried deep: nine of the strangest building site finds“ - 15.07.21) about what strange things people have found on building sites or through their everyday work…The boys traverse the years from the 1400's (yes we know, a little while ago!) to more recent times discussing the Pharaoh's, Pablo Escobar, a hoard of gold coins and touching on some of James's career highlights in darker parts of Nottingham!Have you got a good story to tell? VIP GUEST - Sophie Perkins MRICS We cannot sufficiently express our joy and gratitude to our latest VIP Guest, Sophie Perkins, for spending time with us recording this episode of the SurveYOUR podcast. Sophie, a professional Chartered Building Surveyor, PPE shoe entrepreneur, a champion for women in surveying and new mum was a joy to have a chat with. James and Jon in their inevitable fashion chatted through career path, life history and what made Sophie want to become a surveyor. Sophie is a surveyor through and through and from itchy feet as a youngster building dens in the garden to now a key professional person on large scale projects, where secretly the awe-ness (made up word) about buildings, as a child really, hasn't really disappeared. James and Jon were privileged to have time to chat about life, dachshunds, small children (well James and Sophie that is) and solar stereo's, oh yes… and SURVEYING! Our thanks to Sophie and we really look forward to the next time. James and Jon discuss a recent Built Environment Journal article penned by Jordanne Wilson, a trainee surveyor. The article reflects on the impact and effects of covid on the development of younger surveyors. Young or old, trainee or chartered this is an ever-growing topic and the boys thought the article was perfect material for the SurveYOUR podcast. An opportunity to chat through a number of thought provokers, considering the impact on surveyors starting their careers at the moment and are they missing out on the social benefits of face-to-face contact with peers and colleagues. Yet another current affairs hot topic and a big thumbs up to Jordanne Wilson for taking the time to write about it. Jordanne, we extend an open invitation to pop along to a future podcast and chat some more about this and other articles you are writing. James and Jon discuss whether you would prefer to sleep or work in it? As they consider the opportunity of converting hotel bedrooms (and retail space) into mid/post COVID individual social distancing offices. It's a strange and consistently interesting how the leisure and retail world may spin/develop their assets and whether short or long term, local or long distance and if employers will want something like this for their pre-pandemic commuter workforce. The boys reflect and speculate on this interesting topic and as always give their thoughts and views of how this might just work…As always, the SurveYOUR podcast is a joy to produce, and this episode is a brilliant opportunity for James and Jon to do what they do best… have a jolly good chat! James and Jon tuck in and take a bite out of the hot potato that is Covid Passports. What are they? How do we feel about it? How do we think it is going to impact our Industry and are they here to stay? As you have come to expect, the boys have an opinion and also how all of this could impact on their own businesses. Further toppings were added with the appearance of a very large Mr Waspy, who brought a small amount of excitement into the mix.As always, the SurveYOUR podcast is a joy to produce, and this episode is a brilliant opportunity for James and Jon to do what they do best… have a jolly good chat! S1 E16 Competence in Numbers James and Jon have been promising Sammy Nic that they would attend his APC Study Group for weeks, so, finally, the SurveYOUR podcast popped along to find out what it is all about, how the APC study group was set up and what tips can they give to other APC candidates. We discussed APC challenges and questioning technique, how they meet twice a week to discuss Mandatory and Technical Competencies and test and challenge each other with assessor style Q&A on APC competency knowledge and experience. What a great idea, what a commitment and what a group. A testament to what can be achieved with a little bit of free tech, teamwork and commitment. If you are interested in getting involved, email survpod@gmail.com and we'll pass on your details to Sam. We want to start this off with just… WOW! James and Jon were honoured to have Dan, a Chartered Building Surveyor and Natasha a Commercial Real Estate Surveyor and APC Candidate along to the podcast to chat about what brought them both into surveying and the trials and challenges they have both dealt with along the way… In the mix we discussed cancer, self belief, ‘burglaring' your brother (there is more to tell here :o), the APC being a lonely place and Dan's infectious smile. See us on YouTube @survpod to experience it for yourself! What a truly lovely time we had. This podcast is what makes us complete in our aim to bring those around us, and whom we admire, to our listeners and say, yes! really! they are surveyors! This podcast made our week, and we look forward to it making yours too. An opportunity for anyone preparing for their APC Final Assessment to draw on over 30 years of APC assessment experience!James and Jon and Sam(my) discuss the RICS APC online assessment 10-minute presentation and visual aids. A topic that often makes, 30-year presenting veteran, Jon's blood boil, due to some of the ludicrous advice and guidance given!Hold things up to the camera, screen share project documents… just some of the daft advice and guidance we hear. Clearly given by those that often do not understand the importance of the presentation and the use of visual aids. And, now, in the new mid-pandemic online assessment times, the boys discuss the pros, cons and pitfalls and provide a unique assessor (James & Jon) / candidate (Sam) eye view on the topic.Thank you for allowing Jon to get this one off his chest… We dare say he'll mention it again… and again… and again… and…As always, the SurveYOUR podcast is a joy to produce, and this episode is a brilliant opportunity for James and Jon (and Sam) to do what they do best… have a jolly good chat! Please leave us your comments and don't forget to subscribe Enjoy Links www.survpod.com www.twitter.com/survpod www.instagram.com/survpod

James and Jon pause, take stock and catch their breath for a moment as they reflect on the amazing fun they have had in the first 12 episodes of the SurveYOUR podcast. The fabulous guests and the already huge amount of ground they have covered. Also up for discussion is the strange disappearance of January to March 2021, in a puff of smoke, and how their businesses and general wellbeing is going at the moment…A chance to kick back and nod your head, shout your agreement at your podcasting device and laugh along with the boys as James and Jon reflect on surveying, the universe and everything. James and Jon have enjoyed discussing Sam Nicholson's career and jam-packed life to date, they thought they would lull him into a false sense of security and turn the tables by allowing Sam to pick up the reigns and ask them some questions instead!Running around buildings hitting each other with loaded sticks, music, the movies, family life and business, work ethic and a keen sense of you can achieve anything with a bit of hard work, is all part of the discussion... Oh yes and James loves football (YAWN)… More excitingly James is expecting another baby!Whatever topic The SurveYOUR Podcast approaches, it is always great fun and a joy to record, and this episode is another one of our highlights. Please leave us your comments and don't forget to subscribe Enjoy Links www.survpod.com www.twitter.com/survpod www.instagram.com/survpod

James and Jon discuss one of the hot topics currently on everyone's mind and lips…. Where and how am I going to work when it all gets back to normal? Another question (for a future podcast) is probably, what is ‘normal' now? Drawing on 10 predictions from a recent CBRE publication “The Future Workplace - Top 10 Predictions 2021”, James and Jon discuss each prediction and give their unique viewpoint on their own experience, trials and tribulations in the past, present and future of the workplace. In hindsight, maybe their first hurdle is the ability to read out loud on a live podcast!APC Candidates aware. Following the success of ‘Lifeboat Man' (S1E5) we have invited our VIP Guest, Sam Nicholson, back to the SurveYOUR podcast to massage his ego, discuss his eclectic career path and bring us bang up to date as he embarks upon his new career in Building Surveying. We covered Sam's early experience of surveying which then took a back seat as he embarked upon a ten-year hiatus, surfing, saving lives and skiing in the French alps and a more down to earth local role training off-shore workers for five years. Finally, coming full circle back to Building Surveying, the APC and his future career aspirations. It is always fun chatting with Sam and don't tell him, but James and Jon are secretly envious of the colourful experience he has had to date. We hope you enjoy listening to this episode as much as we enjoyed recording it.Please leave us your comments (you can now do that at www.survpod.com) and don't forget to subscribe Enjoy Links www.survpod.com www.twitter.com/survpod www.instagram.com/survpod
Chartered Commercial Property Surveyor, public sector team leader and navigating life and career challenges.
