This time on Code WACK! In honor of PRIDE Month, we're revisiting a popular episode about the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 1990s. What were the health policy failures that spurred so many Americans to militant activism? How did the LGBTQ+ community win the struggle to get government funding to address the deadly virus? Fortunately today, with appropriate medical intervention, more and more people are living, instead of dying, with HIV/AIDS. But the U.S. still trails many developed countries in life expectancy, a result of health policy failures that continue to cause unnecessary death and suffering.  What can today's Medicare-for-All movement learn from AIDS activists?  To find out, we spoke with Michael Lighty, president of the Healthy California Now Coalition, and former constituency director for Bernie 2020. Che vi devo di', è un poeta!TRANSLATIONSince the heat is back and, especially in the afternoon hours, it becomes an adventure to get anything done, I'm giving myself a few half hours of respite and in these half hours of respite I'm reading something, since then at night instead of reading now I hardly read at night, I listen to podcasts, and among the things I found at home, I fished out a book by Zerocalcare that is my son's, I hadn't read yet, but now that he's gone off to college I'm kind of cleaning up his room, just as moms do.And I happened upon this volume by Zerocalcare that I realized I still had not read. It is titled "Professor Calcare's School of Pizza in the face." It is a beautiful volume because it gives a lot of satisfaction. There are a lot of stories, let's say a little bit connected, alright, connected by the logical thread that it's Zerocalcare telling them, I haven't seen what year it is from, however it refers to 2015 boh, anyway, and there are some stories that, if you know Zerocalcare, you have some idea of the tenor and I'm really enjoying them. The problem let's say I have with this volume that it's a very big volume with a very hard cover so before I was on the couch and, nothing was piercing my thighs and it was falling on my head sometimes when I was dozing off, anyway, nothing it's no problem. No, why am I telling you about this volume? That is, in case you have never read it absolutely read Zerocalcare it is worth it. So, because one of the stories is about the Knights of the Zodiac which is a cartoon that I didn't watch because I was an adult by the time it came out, however while it talks about the Knights of the Zodiac it creates a situation, or rather he desribes an atmosphere, that one I do know.It was the time when the adults came home from work and you had finished your homework, it was already dark outside, because maybe it was winter, or anyway it was approaching seven o'clock, eight o'clock, etc. , and someone in the kitchen was preparing dinner, and you could finally, once you finished your homework, get in front of the TV and watch your favorite cartoons.Well Zerocalcare, who knows how to do these things great, says, I'll read it to you as it's written: "Over there the grown-ups had come back from work and started making dinner and we, on the other hand, had finished our homework and ran to the couch and those words started and those fluorescent neon colored lights of the theme song scrolled in front of us. And every single thing in the world was exactly in its place, as it would never be ever again ." What can I say, he is a poet!

California's unhoused folks weather the storms as officials call for sweeps

We're back, baby!   And today we're discussing how California's unhoused community was forced to deal with nearly three weeks of storms, while both local and statewide elected officials made calls for more violent sweeps.   To begin, Shannon discusses what went down here in Sacramento during the deluge, and how guests at Maryhouse were affected. Thousands of our neighbors are fighting for their lives, and yet elected officials such as Sacramento County Supervisor Phil Serna are focused on carrying out more unconstitutional homeless sweeps.   On the state level, Governor Gavin Newsom has given fiery speeches trying to place blame on municipalities for the state's rise in homelessness. However, if you look at the budget he proposed this month, you'll see that he's actually trying to *decrease* the state's commitment to affordable housing.  A recent study by the Corporation for Supportive Housing found that California could house all its unhoused constituents if we spent about $8 billion per year--about 3% of the state's total budget--over the next 12 years. But the governor doesn't want to do that, and Josh Gohlke at the Sacramento Bee rightly raked him over the coals for his refusal to take responsibility.   Even if Newsom did support that budget, is the political will there for legislative Dems? The party owns a combined 94 of 120 seats in the Assembly and Senate combined (62 and 32, respectively), but just 29 of those legislators are in the Progressive Caucus (and let's not forget that last year their Legislative Caucus chair, Asm Ash Kalra, let the CalCare bill die without a vote).   Of those 29 members, 11 counted the California Real Estate PAC as a top-ten donor in the last election cycle.   So, again, is the political will there in Sacramento to actually fund a solution to homelessness?   Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune, @guillotine4you Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/voicesrivercity   Sacramentans can hear us on 103.1 KUTZ Thursdays at 6 pm and again Fridays at 8 am.

Weekly roundup for February 5, 2022 This past Monday, a single-payer health care bill died in the California state Assembly. In this week's roundup, I discuss the various political and economic aspects of obtaining universal health care for all Californians, and why such an achievement can always be taken away by Washington DC, as long as we remain in the federal union. A bill seeking to cover every Californian with state-financed health insurance faced a Monday deadline to make it out of the state assembly. But just before it was set for a vote, Assembly Bill 1400 was withdrawn by its author, Democrat Ash Kalra. The bill would have made California the only state in the nation with a single-payer health care system if enacted. But some legislators balked at the cost of the system, known as CalCare, which had been estimated at between $314 billion and $391 billion per year. We'll discuss the bill's fate— and the future of single-payer healthcare in the state – with KQED's April Dembosky.

The United States spends far more on healthcare costs than other industrialized countries, yet we continue to have wider gaps of coverage and report worse health outcomes. California Assemblymember Ash Kalra is paving the way for a better system in his state through the California Guaranteed Health Care for All Act, which has been advancing through the state legislature. He's on the show today to explain how it would work, the hurdles it faces, and how CalCare could become the blueprint for national health care reform.  Ash Kalra represents California's 27th District. On Monday California's Assembly was slated to vote on AB1400, which would have paved the way for the Golden State to become the first in the union to adopt single-payer healthcare. Progressives this week hinted that they weren't messing around on CalCare, and would block any state party endorsement for legislators who vote against it. This meant they would not be able to use state party money in their 2022 campaigns. But in a devastating turn of events, Assemblymember Ash Kalra, who authored the bill, decided not to bring it to a vote. This devastated advocates such as California's nurses and the state party's progressive caucus, forcing them to ask how they might make the establishment Democrats pay for this horrific about-face on the people of California. Will this be a much needed moment showing progressives and moderates within the party just how little they have in common? Speaking of campaigns: Despite the California GOP crowing on Fox 40 about their grand intentions in 2022, last year's failed governor recall election shattered any dreams they may have had for the state's executive office. With that said, we've got two very interesting statewide races to watch. First, a Dem-on-Dem battle for the state's commissioner seat between incumbent Ricardo Lara and challenger Marc Levine.   We've also got an interesting race bringing the "tough on crime" issue into view: Attorney General Rob Bonta, considered more progressive than most in the capital as the state's top cop, will be challenged by Sacramento County District Attorney Anne Marie Schubert, a Republican-turned-No-Party-Preference candidate known for her draconian measures against Sacramento residents during her reign.   Also along the "tough on crime" vein, Democratic mayor of San Francisco, London Breed, has called a state of emergency for her city's Tenderloin District. Is it making a difference? Or is this simply a pivot to the right for a mayor currying favor with her city's millionaires and billionaires who are fed up with progressive approaches to crime?   Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune, @guillotine4you Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/voicesrivercity   Sacramentans can hear us on 103.1 KUTZ Tuesdays at 5 pm and again Wednesdays at 8 am. Assemblyman Ash Kalra is all in!  What's California's latest single-payer bill all about? Get the facts from its author, California Assemblyman Ash Kalra (D-San Jose), who introduced AB 1400, California Health Care for All (also known as CalCare), in early 2021.    Why did Kalra introduce AB 1400? For one thing, he believes health care is a human right.  Click here for podcast transcript Click here for Ash Kalra's biography    How would the bill improve our health care? It would provide Californians comprehensive health coverage as well as dental, vision, hearing, substance abuse, mental health and long-term care regardless of employment, marital, financial or immigrant status. “For too long, we've been denying this human right, either outright to people who don't have health care, or in effect for those who don't have meaningful access to health care,” Kalra says.   Why now? The stars have aligned politically to create a more favorable environment to make single-payer, Medicare for All a reality. “We not only are in the midst of a devastating pandemic... but also we have a governor that's supportive. We have a supermajority of Democrats in the California Legislature. And we have the election of President (Joe) Biden, which now gives us an opportunity to make the case to the Department of Health Human Services to allow for federal waivers (needed to have a single-payer system),” Kalra says.   What's Kalra doing to advance the legislation? The Toronto-born lawmaker launched a study and lobbying tour across the U.S. and Canada in October. He met with congressional members in Washington DC and with officials in the Department of Health & Human Services. And while in Canada, he learned that each Canadian province has its own unique single-payer system. “Quebec covers pharmaceuticals....No other province does. When I was in Ontario, you can sense some of that regret that they hadn't done that sooner….In Toronto, between the ages of 25 and 65, there's no coverage for pharmaceuticals and that's a big gap in coverage for Canadian residents in Ontario, and in every other province except for Quebec.”   Why go for state-based single-payer instead of federal Medicare for All?  “Ultimately if the United States of America is going to get a single-payer type system, it's got to start in the states and I think it allows the states to develop a system that works for each individual state, their population, and their economy,” Kalra says.   So what's the latest on the bill's progress? Kalra expects the bill to be heard after lawmakers convene in January 2022. He actually held back the CalCare bill in early 2021 because it was not likely to get the votes it needed in the policy committees. But he expects the bill not only be referred to the relevant policy committees in the upcoming session but that there will be a vigorous debate over the bill.  “I'm very hopeful that my colleagues will understand the urgency of the moment that we need to move forward,” Kalra says. [To hear/view the full episode, become a patron today!] We start with the news that Sacramento District 5 2022 candidate Caity Maple has endorsed District 1 Councilmember Angelique Ashby for Dr Richard Pan's soon-to-be-vacated California state Senate seat. Maple has supported a number of progressive causes, so it has surprised a number of people to see her support for Ashby, who has a long history of being pro-cop, anti-homeless and against CalCare for all (AB 1400). On Maple's public post, Ashby made a bizarre comment against criticism of the endorsement, saying, "If people don't vote for Caity because she supports another democrat female then they aren't very "progressive." This move highlights a number of concerns for the D5 candidate. Is she trying to be everything for everyone? Maple has done incredible work over the last year with Sac SOUP, but there are already some campaign contribution concerns, in that she's taken money from union-busting, school-closing dirtbag Jay Hansen ($250) and attorney Thomas B Sheridan, whose card room took $150,000-$300,000 in coronavirus stimulus support months after authorities shut it down ($500). On a different note, the nation's Republicans continue their slide toward protofascism and cultism, with the GOP voting Liz Cheney out of party leadership for her stance against Trump's behavior, and QAnon enthusiast/xenophobe Marjorie Taylor Greene haranguing Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez in the halls of Congress for not, uh, debating her. Here in California, a Republican city councilmember in Temecula referred to the coronavirus as the "China virus" in an email to the mayor (this is the same woman who likened herself to Rosa Parks over her refusal to wear a mask). The California GOP is the least of our troubles, however, with barely half a million dollars on hand. California Democrats, meanwhile, have over 30 times that. And yet for some reason party leadership continues to feel as if they must take money from the state's prison guards ($100,000, most recently). Anyone ready to start a new party yet?

Facing a recall campaign on his right, California Governor Gavin Newsom is also feeling pressure from the Left to support a bill that would provide universal health care to all Californians. CalCare, as they calling it, would expand medical coverage to nearly 3 million uninsured residents, so why wouldn't he support it? Well, Newsom's close relationships with the medical establishment don't help the cause.   But you know what might help? Some direct action. Stay tuned for next Monday, when the Democratic Socialists of America will be taking to the streets at the Capitol.   With class nearly back in session for the Sacramento City Unified School District, school workers with SEIU 1021 (that's all workers who aren't teachers--from food service workers to bus drivers to custodians) had been finalizing an agreement with the school board on childcare, stipends and physical distancing guidelines. But in the last minute, the board threw a grenade on the process, declaring an "impasse" mid-bargaining.   More than 90 percent of union members voted to reject the board's proposal, so these workers are going on strike April 22 and 23. Want to hear some great news? SCUSD's teachers have their colleagues' backs, and will join them on the picket lines.   We also take a moment to discuss Assembly Member Lorena Gonzalez's FAST Recovery Act, or AB 257. This bill is set to put more power into the hands of California's fast food workers, who have dealt with some of the worst working conditions over the course of the coronavirus pandemic.   Closing arguments were presented Monday in the trial for Derek Chauvin, the former Minneapolis cop on trial for killing George Floyd. A verdict is expected by the end of the week.   Throughout the country, meanwhile, people are claiming the streets for Daunte Wright and Adam Toledo, who were also killed by cops in recent weeks. People are angry, grieving and done with police killing Black and brown boys. Here in California, Oakland demonstrators went as hard as they always do. And in Sacramento, four cops reportedly spent Saturday evening in the hospital after being sprayed with an "unknown irritant."   Stay tuned on the Chauvin verdict. And expect the people to continue to reclaim the streets.   Thanks for listening, defund the police and, as always: Twitter: @youknowkempa, @guillotine4you, @ShanNDSTevens, @Flojaune Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/voicesrivercity Sacramentans can hear us on 103.1 KUTZ Tuesdays at 5 pm and again Wednesdays at 8 am.
