In France's overseas departments, Creole language and culture are seen as a bulwark against racism and standardisation. The concept of "Créoleness" was developed in the late 1980s, in the wake of Aimé Césaire's writings on Négritude and Edouard Glissant's notion of "Antillanité", or a specifically Caribbean identity. Our reporters Florence Gaillard and Georges Yazbeck travelled to Martinique to hear from those who embody this complex identity.  Following the Christian calendar, the four days before Ash Wednesday are known as "les jours gras" in Martinique: a time of celebration and mischief. Everyone is invited to the carnival: rich, poor, white, black, locals and tourists.The festivities are populated by some emblematic local characters: King Vaval, the Red Devils and Marianne La Po Fig, a mysterious creature made of banana leaves. According to Marie-Lyne Psyché-Salpétrier, president of the Recherches et Traditions association, Marianne La Po Fig is part of Martinique's spiritual pantheon, handed down by the island's Yoruba ancestors and belonging to its African roots. Philosopher Edouard Glissant called Martinique "the melting pot of the world". Like all Creole societies, it is the product of three centuries of colonisation and a mixture of European, African and Asian populations. The indigenous Amerindians, known as Kalinagos or Caribs, have all but disappeared. This physical and cultural intermingling has led to the emergence of a popular language: Creole. Long associated with slavery, Creole was forbidden in the classroom and frowned upon in polite society. Yet the language continued to evolve – largely thanks to songs and stories – and today it's a poetic, multi-layered idiom. We meet Jocelyne Béroard, a singer with the group Kassav', who told us more about the inherent poetry of Créole and how she uses it on stage and in daily life. Meanwhile, the "Groupe d'Etudes et de Recherches en Espace Créole" has been working for almost 30 years to lay the written foundations of Creole, publishing dictionaries and novels in a Creole that borrows expressions from Martinique, French Guiana, Haiti and Reunion Island. More importantly, GEREC has fought to bring Creole to school textbooks and universities and thereby formalise its use beyond the oral sphere. In 1989, Raphaël Confiant, Jean Bernabé and Patrick Chamoiseau published "Eloge de la Créolité" or "In Praise of Creoleness". This manifesto celebrates Creole identity as the acceptance of all diversities and the endorsement of plural identities. For its co-author Confiant: "Creoleness is, in fact, the opposite of apartheid!"

Oliwon Lakarayib reçoit Thomas Romon, archéologue et Jean-Albert Privat, membre actif du KAB (Komité Ans Bellay). Dès le début de l'occupation humaine en Martinique comme dans d'autres territoires insulaires de la Caraïbe, les populations ont peuplé majoritairement les côtes. Ainsi des cimetières, parfois sauvages, sont implantés sur le littoral. Souvent non recensés donc inconnus, plusieurs de ces cimetières ont révélé leur existence après des cyclones mais également à la faveur de l'érosion marine qui met à jour des ossements. Aujourd'hui, avec l'accélération de cette érosion, ces ensembles funéraires sont voués à disparaître. Le site de l'Anse Bellay aux Anse-d'Arlets est un exemple de cimetière menacé. Les archéologues de l'INRAP ont travaillé sur ce site qui nous apprend beaucoup sur les pratiques funéraires à l'époque amérindienne mais aussi coloniale. Since the global temperature at that time was 8°C lower [Citation 1] than it is today, and a lot of water was in the form of ice, Beringia was not covered by water. So, people came to this Beringia, 24,000 years ago [Citation 2] & [Citation 3], because it offered them better chances of survival [citation 4]. They stayed there for around 10,000 years or lesser and then moved to the Americas [Citation 5]. These people were the ancestors of the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas. Around 100 people lived in each house Had weapons like poisoned arrows, spears with fish hooks on one end Kalinaga [Citation 7] Fierce people who loved war and fighting Lived by fishing, hunting, and farming Men lived together in one big house where they trained Women lived in many smaller houses Trained their children from a very early age for warfare Had weapons like poisoned arrows, burning arrows, etc. When Christopher Columbus first came to the Caribbean, he met the Lokono. Then, he sailed further south and met the Kalinaga. He called the Lokono as Arawaks and Kalinaga as Caribs. The Caribs had a custom of eating human flesh to acquire the characteristics of the person who died. It was a ritual for them. They used this ritual before going to a battle and when they trained children. But they did not eat human flesh like for the taste or pleasure of it. But Columbus used their custom to spread the rumor that they were cannibals. So, he was able to acquire Queen Isabella's permission to capture the Caribs. Christopher Columbus used the queen's permission as an excuse to capture Caribs and Arawaks and use them as slaves. In the years that followed, most of the Caribs and Arawaks died not only due to abuse and inhuman working conditions, but also due to the diseases brought by the Spanish. They also promised to appoint him as the governor of the areas he would discover, and declare him an Admiral of the ocean. First Voyage So, Columbus sets sail for the first time with 3 ships. After sailing for 5 weeks, he lands in the Bahamas. He meets the Arawaks and the Caribs there. After observing them, he decides that Arawaks are weak and can be easily enslaved. He also notices that these people wear gold ornaments. So, he thinks that there should be reserves of gold there. So, he establishes a small settlement there, and returns to Spain, to bring more people. This settlement is named La Navidad. (A map of his voyages can be found below) Second voyage Vasco da Gama and the other Portuguese explorers hadn't reached India yet. So, when Columbus returns to Spain, Europeans think that he had landed in the Indies, which is how Asian countries like India and China were called back then. So, with the support of the Spanish monarchs, he gathers more ships and more men than his first voyage and sets sail. After he reaches La Navidad and finds it destroyed, Columbus establishes a second settlement there. Then, he captures the Arawaks and starts ruling over them. He commands them to find gold for him. If any Arawak fails to provide his share of gold, Columbus cuts off his limbs. Thus, after establishing his tyrannic rule, he returns to Spain. This reminds me of my state in India, called Tamil Nadu, where I was born. People in my state are proud of their hospitality. In rural areas even now, you can find houses with Thinnai (see picture below), a raised platform outside the house. A Thinnai was meant to be a traveler's resting place. Any traveler can come and rest here. Since Tamil people are very hospitable, they give travelers anything they ask for. But a bad traveler who sits in the Thinnai can ask for a place to sleep inside the house. If you let the traveler sleep inside the house for one night, he would want to have the entire house for himself. Even though this sounds ridiculous, this is exactly what the Spanish did to the Arawaks. Third voyage When he returns to the Americas on his third voyage, he finds the settlers and the Arawaks revolting against him. So, he awards them horrific punishments without even conducting a trial (Citation 1). When even that doesn't end the revolt, he stops ruling the entire place by himself. Instead, he decentralizes the power and lets individual Spanish settlers rule over Arawaks. Even though the Arawaks rejoice due to the change in administration, the reality doesn't change much for them. Their new Spanish masters award the same horrific punishments to them. I can understand why Columbus awarded horrific punishments by dismembering the Arawaks. But why would the Spanish settlers do the same too? Were most Europeans at that time sadists, or was there a reason for their actions? To find out, I take a look at the Stanford prison experiment. Unable to cope with the atrocities committed by their Spanish masters, many Arawaks commit suicide. Some of them burn the crops, hoping that it will cause drought and kill the settlers. As a result, the Arawaks' population declines exponentially (Citation 2). By this time, the news of Columbus's failure in effectively ruling the newly discovered regions reaches the Spanish monarchy, and they send him a ship to arrest him and bring him back. After he was brought back to Spain, he is imprisoned for 6 weeks. After that, he is released, and his wealth is restored. But he loses the support of the Spanish Monarchy, due to his poor administrative skills. Fourth & Final voyage Columbus somehow manages to convince the Spanish monarchs to fund his journey for the fourth time. The Spanish monarchy accepts his request but appoints a new governor. Columbus' fourth voyage is uneventful, because he spends most of his voyage in Jamaica, shipwrecked. The new governor doesn't like Columbus, and hence, tries his level best to prevent Columbus from being rescued. But eventually, Columbus and his men get help and return to Spain. Two years later, Columbus dies due to Reactive Arthritis (Citation 3). Noel Swerdlow is Professor of Astronomy and Astrophysics at the University of Chicago. He has specialized in the study of the practice of astronomy in antiquity through the 17th century. I emailed Dr. Swerdlow on this matter. Here is what he had to say on Ms. Murdock's view:

“In antiquity, constellations were just groups of stars, and there were no borders separating the region of one from the region of another. In astrology, for computational purposes the zodiacal signs were taken as twelve arcs of 30 degrees measured from the vernal equinox. Because of the slow westward motion of the equinoxes and solstices, what we call the precession of the equinoxes, these did not correspond to the constellations with the same names. But . . . within which group of stars the vernal equinox was located, was of no astrological significance at all. The modern ideas about the Age of Pisces or the Age of Aquarius are based upon the location of the vernal equinox in the regions of the stars of those constellations. But the regions, the borders between, those constellations are a completely modern convention of the International Astronomical Union for the purpose of mapping . . . and never had any astrological significance. I hope this is helpful although in truth what this woman is claiming is so wacky that it is hardly worth answering.(5) So when this woman says that the Christian fish was a symbol of the ‘coming age of Pisces', she is saying something that no one would have thought of in antiquity because in which constellation of the fixed stars the vernal equinox was located, was of no significance and is entirely an idea of modern, I believe twentieth-century, astrology.”

One thing to consider about his works: Yes, he was right about some things, especially concerning governments, banking, & new world order agendas, but those things had already been exposed years earlier by people like, William Guy Carr, Myron C. Fagan, Eustace Mullins, Gary Allen, Carroll Quigley, Anthony C. Sutton, Ralph Epperson, & even, Abbe Barruel, & John Robison decades earlier. The main question i have to ask: If Astrotheology is true, why would Maxwell, & the others have to lie about so many different things? Why the false connection to word origins from different languages formed in different time periods that have absolutely no relation? Why make up such silly stories about biblical texts, & ancient history that the world of secular scholars easily debunks? The people from the Bible lived in agrarian societies where they survived off the land. Of course, you would find fish, cows, & other animals that are included in the modern Zodiac. After all, it has some of those basic animals in it. As Albert Mcilhenny points out, Jesus is also called the Lion of The Tribe of Judah so, why not equate him w/ Leo? Why not divulge that many of your claims came straight from occultists like, Massey, & Higgins? Why would Jordan, lie, & act as if he isn't a big Blavatsky fan? He's openly claimed to have been a protege of late Rosicrucian/Freemason philosopher Manly P. Hall. BTW, Hall's estate has denied the fact. Why would the rest not admit that they are coming from a Theosophy/New Age standpoint? Jordan Maxwell, & his emissaries know full well that most people are ignorant of modern history, let alone, ancient history. They know most won't understand that much of the info they represent came from various occultists, & that modern research, & evidence has proven many of those claims to be incorrect. They counted on most to not understand how many of the stories from later antiquity were Hellenized to fit the narratives of the time. They also understood, those who are new to realizing things aren't quite the way they've been led to believe are easily thrown into pure nihilism. This makes them easy targets because they tend to grab onto others who are professing a knowledge of alternative facts, & they aren't yet equipped to discern truth from lies. Another interesting aspect to keep in mind, Blavatsky tried her hand at several different things before hooking up with Alcott, & getting the Theosophical Society going. She herself, was a Co-Mason, although like Jordan Maxwell, she took many shots at the higher degrees of Freemasonry. Today we continue our exploration of Colombia and the Caribbean. We look at several mysterious civilisations who left us impressive evidence of their existence, but no clues as to who they were. Europeans came into contact with the Caribbean after Columbus's momentous journeys in 1492, 1496 and 1498. Europe cease the opportunity to expand their territories and began settlements and trade in many of the Caribbean Islands.. The indigenous peoples, found on these Islands were believed to be  mostly peaceful Tainos and warlike Caribs. These original inhabitance were unsuitable for slave labour in the newly formed plantations, and they were quickly and brutally decimated.
