These emotions can encourage self-judgement and avoidance, yet the best way to move through them is not by fixing them but by feeling them. They dig into the importance of integration, pausing, coming back to centre and having practices to support you, especially during times of change and conflict. Hannah shares her observations of people in her community swinging the metaphorical pendulum from one extreme to another and how her work is centred on seeing each of her clients as a whole person. Hannah and Casey reflect on how, although their work can look very different on the surface, they both work with people who are ready for their next level and want to live a more aligned life. Both their journeys started with healing the physical body — Casey with nutrition and Hannah with physical training — and have evolved as they integrated and acknowledged their intuitive gifts. The mind-body connection is (IMO) the biggest component of total wellness no one's talking about, other than Casey Berglund. Casey believes you can strengthen your mind-body connection by recognizing the disconnected states (feeling anxious, frustrated and overanalyzing) and by coming back into our bodies to feel more grounded and whole. Casey will absolutely blow your mind in this episode, discussing... ✨ How diet culture keeps us disembodied in “all in our heads” when it comes to food and healing (and how 95% of the time, the anxiety isn't about food). ✨How mind-body integration offers a deep sense of confidence in oneself beyond what changing one's body size can provide. ✨ How to connect with discomfort in the body (the fear, anxiety, stress) in a way that's serving, rather than avoiding it using food or other coping mechanisms. Food and body stuff can be triggering. It's essentially why I started this show. However, before we get into any bigger concepts or deeper topics, I have to teach you about a framework called, “The Window of Tolerance” first introduced to me by Casey Berglund (founder of the Let Your Body Lead Professional Certification) and developed by Dr. Daniel Siegel. I define the concept's three parts (hyperarousal, hypoarousal, and the window of tolerance) and guide you through feelings/body sensations associated with each. I then explain how we can widen our window of tolerance using Casey Berglund's BODY acronym (as explained in her Tedx Talk here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oh5nlYZcmFQ). Using the Window of Tolerance framework and Casey's BODY acronym will help you process triggers regarding food and body insecurities and vulnerabilities and beyond into other life capacities too. ———————————————

Alicia shares how the poor relationships she had food and her body growing up ultimately influenced her becoming the antidiet dietitian she is today. She shares details about her first encounters with negative body thoughts and trying on several diets, attempting to “fix” her overweight body and cure symptoms before being formally diagnosed with celiac disease just before college. She explains how the diagnoses prompted her getting “caught up in the spiral of restriction” as she began restricting other foods from her diet. She was picked up from college by her parents and put in an eating disorder treatment facility for anorexia where she says she officially hit “diet bottom.” Near the end of the episode she encourages listeners to assess how their relationship with food is impacting other areas of their life, using Casey Berglund's “The Purpose Map” referred to as the purpose triangle in the episode. Alicia provides hope through the practice of intuitive eating for listeners who might be feeling the same way she did or struggling with the relationships they have with food and their bodies. ———————————————

It's probably happened to you too. Thinking of what to have at a restaurant, wondering if you'd better have one thing over another because of what the other person might think of you. The same can be said for what you might get at the grocery store or put in your child's lunch. So we wanted to dig into whether that judgement was real or more our imagination. While trying to find it, we found a much bigger conversation. One that involves culture and morality, about guilt and grief, and about something that millions fight with every day. Today, I am so excited to kick off this very special summer series of interviews to inspire you as you go through the entrepreneurial journey. Especially if you're maybe still in those early stages you're still in year one or two or three. Not too long ago, I was having a little Skype date with my dear friend and client Casey Berglund who is just incredible as you're going to hear in our conversation. We were catching up and we were saying, "I can't believe it's been a couple of years now that we've known each other," and that I've seen these incredible changes in her business and these tweaks and pivots she's taken along the way that now she is so incredibly happy and fulfilled and excited about her business. But it didn't happen overnight, it took some work. It took really rolling up her sleeves, and it took making some hard decisions doing hard things is a big part of this journey. What she said to me after we had this little catch up date, I was so excited about what she's been up to in her big cross-country road trip. She's going to tell you all about in our conversation, but what really came to mind and what she said was, "I wish I would have heard more stories about this journey and not the highlights but really the hard moments, the hard decisions the times where you really have to lean into the challenge and you lean in with so much faith that you can make it happen. That would have helped me so much more. More people need to hear about what we just talked about this journey over the first few years." That's what this series is. Casey is of course the person who came up with this great idea as we were checking in with each other a few months ago, so I'm so excited to kick off with Casey Berglund. I hope you enjoy this conversation. Let's dive in.

Love Life Connection

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 25, 2016 22:18

I am so excited about today’s episode.   Casey {from worthyandwell.com} + I have been buds almost since my business’ beginning. It’s been really fun to have a friend where we got to birth our businesses, programs, and services into the world together.   {This must be why moms who were pregnant together have unique + special bonds?! I think I’m kinda getting it.}   Anyways, she’s a master at helping people heal their relationship to food, and eat for fuel, flavor, and fun.   I adore Casey + what she teaches, mostly because she gave me a good excuse to use an analogy in my show notes {SAT, old school style}:   Your relationship with yourself is to your romantic relationships, as _____ is to all your relationships.   Give up?   It's food!   I love what Casey does because she doesn't teach you what to eat/not to eat. She teaches you how to use your own inner wisdom as a guide to know what to eat. This not only changes your relationship to food, it really changes all the relationships you have in your life.     Food + my relationship to it has been a huge part of my life, and I attribute changing the way I ate to attract {and keep} Stevie. I was a chronic dieter + calorie counter-extraordinaire. For years I believed that once I reached the perfect weight, all my dating problems would be solved + I could have any relationship I wanted.   It was only once I saw food as something as nourishing + not ‘something to be conquered’ did I transform the relationship I had with myself, and ultimately, attract the relationship I truly wanted. If you struggle with food, then this episode is for you.   About Casey:For many years Casey had an unhealthy and unhappy relationship with food, her body, and her life. She is a self-described queen of the all-or-none when it came to food + dieting. She read every diet book she could get her hands on and ate in a very rigid way (that would usually backfire). This left her exhausted + feeling stuck. She got her degree in nutrition from the University of Alberta, which was useful in learning how food affected her body. But what REALLY helped her was establishing a yoga practice. Yoga helped her let go of her perfectionist mentality + made her more mindful. It connected her with her own unique inner wisdom, which now serves to guide the way she eats, the way she treat her body, and the way she lives her life. In this episode, here’s what you’ll learn:1. How Casey created her own inner wisdom, and how it helps her make eating choices that keep her nourished + happy. {She’ll tell you how to create your own inner wisdom, too.}2. How to eat on a first date or in front of men without feeling self-conscious3. How mindful eating can help you attract the right relationship for you4. How to deal with different food choices + values in a relationship {eg, you’re a vegetarian + he’s not}   Resources:   Casey's 21-Day Mindful Eating Challenge   Worthy and Well   Dating Clarity Session
