With a BA in Communications from Boston College and coaching certification from iPEC Coaching, Anne seamlessly combines her extensive management background with in-depth coaching methodology. In this episode, Anne shares valuable insights on the concept of the straight line versus the latticework path in one's career. She challenges the common perception of a linear trajectory and emphasizes the importance of embracing serendipity, patience, and continuous learning to become a substantive leader.Anne also delves into the topic of coaching authenticity, encouraging coaches to embrace their unique styles. Drawing from her own experience, she highlights the significance of owning who you are as a coach, breaking away from conventional methods, and fostering authenticity to create meaningful connections with clients.Join us as Anne Sugar shares her wisdom on navigating career trajectories, embracing authenticity in coaching, and refining the art of active listening. This episode is a must-listen for anyone seeking valuable insights into leadership, coaching, and personal development. Tune in and elevate your understanding of what it takes to be a substantive leader in today's dynamic professional landscape.Episode Quotes:Straight line vs. Latticework pathSo I think we all think that our careers are going to just go up the mountain like this, right? In this straight trajectory. But it's really not the case. It's a little bit of serendipity. And I ask a lot of people that I coach, “Well, how did you get from here to there?” And people say to me, “Oh, it's just a conversation I had, I wanted to learn something new. I was talking to a friend of mine, somebody reached out to me on LinkedIn and I wanted to kind of take this new role.”So it kind of is a bit circular, right? In terms of how we kind of bob and weave and a lot of consultants talk about it from a lattice perspective. So I think if we really get to the underpinnings of it, it's really about patience and learning. It's not just this kind of straight rocket ship up, but how do we allow for the patience and the learning. And that's how you become much more of a substantive leader.Embracing coaching authenticityIt's really just owning who you are as a coach. What does that mean? When I went through coaching school, you had to learn how to ask a question. You went through this very linear process. My brain doesn't work that way. My brain goes to the shiny object. And sometimes it might come across as, you know, kind of swirly. And so I'd always try to live in this linear process of asking a question. But I finally decided, you know what? I'm just gonna own how my brain works. So I think part of it is just as a coach, really just owning your style. And it doesn't matter how everybody else “does” it, just own it.A coach's perspective on active listening and watchingThere are three things that I really look for when I'm listening. And the first one is I try really hard not to formulate my next question or a thought in my head. I try really hard to live in the moment. And I also try really hard to look at people's body language, too, just because body language never lies. But now I'm going to contradict myself because I kind of love doing that. Sometimes I like to say a frown is just a frown. You as a coach. You're looking for these signals, right? And these you could have a frown that's just like a millisecond on your client's face and you think, “Oh, I just asked the wrong question or maybe I poked too hard on this.”Show Links:Official WebsiteAnne Sugar on LinkedinAnne Sugar on Twitter

“If I have the power to make myself sick, I have the power to make myself well.” That's what my friend Melody told herself when she was battling health issues early in her life. After a powerful experience of changing her health, she realized there was more to self-empowerment than she had been raised to believe. She is an amazing example of taking her own journey of resilience and grit and turning it into a path for grace for all girls. I have followed Melody's work for years and to have her on the show is such an honor!  Melody Pourmoradi, the author of “XOXO From A Girl Who Gets It“, Certified Empowerment Coach, Twin Girl Mama, and the creator of the GiRLiFE Certification Program truly believes that empowered women empower girls – so much so that she's made it her life's work to train passionate women to claim true empowerment for themselves so that they can share it with the girls in their lives and pave the way for our future female leaders. Melody studied Business and Psychology at York University in Toronto while working in her family business, Robely Trading. Operating in two such different worlds proved her love for all things human potential AND business. She quickly learned that whatever she would be doing in the world would involve both things. After university she started exploring the world of coaching and other healing modalities and starting aligning herself with leaders and spaces that would help her grow that part of her interest. She studied at IPEC Coaching, an ICF accredited program and then moved on to also learn at Institute for Integrative Nutrition {IIN}. In this episode, Melody shares the stories behind how she created the GirlLifeEmpowerment movement, why it matters so much to remind young women how powerful they are, and what is possible when you follow your gut and go for the thing you really want. The “light bulb” went off for her.  She wasn't in the right “container.”  Tune in today to find out if you are in the “container” right for you and hear Stacey's insights and strategies for career growth and success.     IN THIS EPISODE: [00:45] Stacey shares her passion as a career coach and her history at American Express [09:35] Leaving American Express and taking an unknown career path: tech or coaching [17:57] Why you shouldn't stay in a position where you feel trapped [21:06] Engineering your exit package [31:32] What is success in life [40:39] Stacey advises ways to accelerate your career   KEY TAKEAWAYS: Engineer your exit before you leave a company.  Ask former employees what their exit package was and work from a position of knowledge. Twenty-five and thirty years ago, a person accepted a position at a firm and stayed their entire career.  That doesn't happen anymore.  Keep your skills fresh where you are because you never know when your company will change product or direction.   Prepare your resume with more than skills, knowledge, job history, etc.  The resume should include other attributes like motivations, leadership behaviors, and career goals.    RESOURCE LINKS: Podcast - SYCK Facebook - Stacey Staaterman LinkedIn - Stacey Staaterman Twitter - Stacey Staaterman Website - Stacey Staaterman   BIOGRAPHY:   STACEY STAATERMAN LEADERSHIP & CAREER GROWTH COACH   Stacey Staaterman is a PCC-level Certified Professional Coach (Leadership, Career). Raia shares her personal experience of being bullied on her first day of fourth grade and talking herself up from humiliation—and the thing she did next only further proves her inner strength. In difficult times the ONE thing needed to move you forward is . . . [17:38]. The confidence talk. Where does your confidence stem from? It’s all too easy to get wrapped up with praises that come from external things like your looks, style, and possessions. But when you dig deep beyond the superficial, what do you see? The KEY to solving your true confidence mystery is . . . [26:47]. The safe place. When it comes to meeting someone for the first time, how often do you share the real, most vulnerable self? Let’s be honest—no one does! But there are ways to get to a comfort level with a stranger in a matter of a few questions. Get the ball rolling with these THREE questions . . . [40:25]. The happy toolbox. This time in our world is monumental. Listen to the news or scroll through your social feed and you’re bound to find something that haunts you for days. So what can we do to lift ourselves up and rise? Raia’s BEST advice to finding a way to bloom in the gloom . . . In preparation for the Ignite Your Life Conference, Marni welcomes President and CEO of iPEC Coaching, Luke Iorio, back into the Den. Luke shares the a-ha moments that changed his life and shifted his mindset, how we can get out of our head to tap into greater consciousness and align with our inner knowing, and why this is the best time to invest in ourselves.     Key takeaways from this episode:  How to look at your dating life objectively Feel good about your approach to life Why now is the right time to invest in yourself Access your inner knowing   Igniting Your Life [2:25]  Luke went on an inward journey about why he was out of alignment with who he truly was. It made him who it was today. As a child, his father was a devout studier of personal development. Luke had access to books about finding out who he was.    “I spent a lot of time trying to manipulate and control my relationships in an effort to keep myself safe.”   Luke says if you resonate with living a flat experience and you want to get in touch with your aliveness, your spark then you need to wake up, express, and get in alignment with your inner knowing.  When you start to look at yourself objectively and you will get in touch with your intuition and know when you are caught up in your old story or the drama of situations.   There is power in shifting how you look at life.    How Objectivity Affects Your Dating Life [17:26]  It can be tough to start a relationship with someone else. New feelings, thoughts, and emotions come to the forefront of your mind. If you find yourself ruminating on the possible reasons he didn’t call, or what a guy meant by what he said, you may be too narrowly focused. Be aware that those triggers are messages from your unconscious that can help you better understand yourself. It's your past programming. Luke says the more you recognize the roots of your thought process you can decide what version of yourself you want to show to other people.    Give yourself the opportunity to get out of your head and be more natural and genuine.  After this inner work, regardless of the situation you find yourself in you will know you are making decisions that resonate with who you really are. The more self-aware you are, you have more peace and you stay centered and grounded.    The Time is Right, Now [32:11] During these uncertain times, people are reassessing their values and pinpointing what is important to them. Many are wondering why they didn’t enrich their lives more often and what they can do to make significant changes. Marni asks Luke why right now is a good time to invest in the future and attend the Ignite Your Life Conference.  Luke says now is an important time to be devoted to personal development and to turn down influences that distract us or don't benefit us. A person’s development journey should start from within the flow of their usual lives. This way we build stronger roots and start making decisions from a place of inner knowing.    Make a Connection: Visit Our Website Join Our Dating Den Facebook Community Here! What space are you living in right now? Could you look at your life at this very moment and say, “yes, this is where I want to be?” So many of us are living in mental isolation even when we’re surrounded by others, disconnected from ourselves–but there’s hope. Megan Murphy, women's empowerment coach and business mentor, sheds some light on the simplicity of kindness and how you can find your way in even the darkest of times.  Megan’s a kindness activist who created the Kindness Rocks Project as well as a meditation instructor, author, and lecturer. She's the author of Pebble For Your Thoughts: How One Kindness Rock At The Right Moment Can Change Your Life and The Kindness Rocks Journal: An Interactive Space To Work Through Difficult Times And Create Inspiring Messages To Share With Others. Megan is also an iPEC graduate who’s committed to making a lasting impact through her joyful practice.  Jump in and explore how to become part of this ripple effect of kindness and ultimately find the connection you’ve been looking for! Key Takeaways: Questioning the fear. Is there this constant, stirring idea of doing something different than you’re doing now? You’re not alone. So many of us live in the routine that we lose our sight of what’s really calling us. The RIGHT time to make a change looks like this . . . [08:54]. Questioning the universe. You’ve taken the risk and wondered, am I actually on the right path? Did I make a big mistake? After you take a deep, long breath get ready to open yourself up and see what the world’s trying to tell you. Look for signs like THESE . . . [16:21]. Questioning the future. Megan describes how she let go of a past, deep grief that allowed her to detach from what was and be open to what will come. Today, so many of us are still attached to our pre-pandemic lives. The BEST advice to help get you through this time is . . . [32:58]. Questioning the kindness. Making a kind gesture, anonymously or not, can make people feel vulnerable. Some may see kindness as weakness and difficult to share, while others can tap into their emotional side without a blink. Why is that? The TRUTH revealed at . . . Be inspired by a personal (and crummy) weekend from Jenny and how her experience unravels so many lessons that we’re currently facing amongst ourselves.  It’s time to get real and be awakened by our ordinary life. It shares signs like your car making funny noises or your relationship seeming off, but no matter what you just keep pushing it under the rug? Next time, get to it sooner than later. The universe is trying to teach you THIS . . . [04:07].  Your unwelcome surprise. The ball has dropped. The floor has fallen beneath you. It happened. All these describe that moment when the unexpected has happened and your emotional range can feel like a roller coaster. The TRUTH behind these moments and what they say about you . . . [10:40]. In the last episode I continued our exploration of the Cycle of Change using the analogy of a card game which was first introduced to me by iPEC Coaching. If you have not listened to the first two episodes covering the Cycle of Change, I recommend you go back to the episodes. They are titled How to Process These Unexpected Changes and Contemplating Your New Normal, respectively. These are quick episodes and will catch you up on The Cycle of Change as it looks during the COVID-19 pandemic, or really any time of crisis. I mentioned in Contemplating Your New Normal that when you move into the Shuffle Phase you require more time to reflect and begin researching different options for the future. You start doing some research and reaching out to others who know more about whatever it is you are exploring. In the Shuffle phase you don’t have a lot of information yet, so you are thinking and gathering, exploring ideas, imagining different possibilities that could play out in the future. The Cycle of Change Phase 2: Deal (Preparing/Developing) The next phase in the Cycle of Change, using that card game analogy, is The “Deal” phase. The Deal phase is marked by an increase in activity – this will include active networking, testing out interests or experimenting, training and skill building. The plan that was developed in the Shuffle phase is beginning put into action! You will have more energy and a more positive attitude because now you can actually do something. You are following a path; you have a direction to go in. You’re open to new experiences, new people, and preparing yourself for the intensity of the next phase. When you are in the Deal phase you are more optimistic, seeing life as an opportunity, and you experience more confidence in this stage than in any other. You are the proverbial adventurous student of life eager to stretch, learn, and grow in new directions. Think about it. When you’re playing a card game and the cards are being dealt, there’s so much opportunity. It’s anyone’s game at this point. When you first enter this the Deal phase in life, you will shy away from making commitments. Remember, this is the phase of experimenting and because of this you’ll tend to want to keep your options open and take things “one step at a time.” What’s important in The Deal phase is your ability to move to the point where you can make a choice to move forward with commitment and make something happen. You may not know how it’s all going to turn out but you are ready to execute your plan. Here you’ll also be looking around for allies, mentors and guides who can help to see you through the next phase successfully. You’re now developing a plan that will take you into the next phase, beyond networking and experimenting. You will identify one or more goals for the next phase, and thus the work at the end of The Deal Phase is to have a strategy and a plan formed that lays out the steps that will take you to your goal. Anticipation, excitement and energy will increase as you gain more clarity around all of these pieces. There is also fear of failure or success, likely a combination of both, but you will be poised for action. The Deal Phase During COVID-19 You may have experienced the full cycle of change during the COVID-19 pandemic in certain areas of your life. There is no definitive length of time that you need to spend in each phase, what’s important is that you are doing the work in each phase. You may have found that with some things in your life you felt grieving and despair, a longing for what was. This may have passed relatively quickly as you contemplated and absorbed the changes. You may have then found yourself reaching out to others to see what they were doing or going to Google or Youtube to find ideas for how to do things differently. Before you knew it, you may have found yourself experimenting with your new ideas and noting what worked and what didn’t work. And not long after you found yourself saying, “This is what I’m doing. I’m all in.” For other things in your life, you may find yourself still in the Toss In, unable to accept that things won’t be the same, at least not anytime soon. What will be helpful to you in the Deal phase is: Having a vision of what success will look like in the next phase. This will not only get you excited for what’s to come but may also help to identify any gaps in resources or training that you will need to set you up for success. In the last phase you were identifying your core values and how you wanted to live your life. Here, it’s also important to know what brings you alive, what value you want to bring and at least a sense of what your purpose or mission is. If you can connect your goals to these things it will fuel your fire. However, don’t overthink it, experiment with what you want to bring forth in this phase. For instance, in my case I can boil down my purpose to the statement, “my purpose is to wake people up to how awesome they already are so they can get on with their purpose.” That is clearly tied to the goals I have for Women Taking the Lead and yes, it fuels my fire. It motivates me on the days when I can’t see progress or I just don’t feel like it. Start with the change you’d like to see in the world and let it unfold from there. If you are externally motivated, find an accountability partner or and accountability group. This will help you keep up momentum. That’s not to say you cannot pivot based on what you are learning from your networking and experimenting. Forward movement coming from informed decisions is what you are looking for here and the accountability will help ensure that this is what’s happening. Also, having trusted advisors who have your highest good at heart and who can listen intently, cheer you on, and help you clarify your next steps is priceless. If you have someone like this who is also great at setting priorities and making a plan, especially if this is not your forte, that’s a bonus! If you are in this phase and you have not yet read my book Accomplished: How to Go from Dreaming to Doing I’m going to strongly encourage you do so. A lot of what you need to do to navigate The Deal phase successfully is in this book.   From creating a vision of success, to getting at your core values, your purpose and mission, Superpowers, and even creating goals and designing a plan are in this book. It’s a tool you do not want missing from your toolkit.   You can find the paperback and kindle version of Accomplished in Amazon, and as soon as I can get into the Portland Pod recording studio once again, I will have the book recorded, mastered and uploaded into Audible for your listening pleasure as well. Stay tuned for that!   If you have read Accomplished and you are finding yourself in The Deal Phase, read it again. This book is a process that will take you to new levels of knowing yourself and finding success with each reading.   Okay, that’s The Deal phase. We only have one more phase to cover, Playing the Game phase and I’ll be covering that in next week’s episode.   As always, I hope this was of value to you and here’s to your success!   Thank You to Our Sponsors! I hope this post finds you healthy and well, maybe not everything going perfectly but seeing some sort of a light at the end of this tunnel. I truly believe we are all going to get through this and be okay and I believe this because we always do. We always get through our worst days, we always come out the other side of things. The question always is, really, “what do we want to experience while we’re going through it? Who do we want to be, how do we want to show up as? So, I have been using these episodes as a way to support you and let you know you are not alone and what you are going through is very normal. The Cycle of Change   Last week, I introduced The Cycle of Change using the analogy of a card game as I learned it through iPEC Coaching. I gave an overview of the four phases you can find yourself, in any area of your life. I’m going to dive into each phase and I started with the phase that we are all probably finding ourselves in due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Toss In phase. We don’t go through The Cycle of Change once; we go through it over and over again with each cycle ending in the Toss in. The Toss In is a stage of completion and probably some bittersweet feelings as you start to accept everything that happened in the last phase. Eventually, you start emotionally detaching from the last phase and in some cases, there may be a physical separation from the environment and people who were in the last cycle with you. This is true in the cases of buying a new home, ending a relationship, changing jobs, starting a new business, etc. So, using the card game analogy, this is when the last game comes to an end but you’re still alive and so you will continue to play one game or another. Again, it’s a continuous cycle. The phase that comes after the Toss In phase is the “Shuffle” phase. It is a non-committal phase where you want to contemplate what was and what could be next. In the Toss In phase of non-action, the contemplating and reflecting had more to do with grieving and letting go of the past and what could have been. In the Shuffle phase the contemplation and reflection moves toward focusing mostly on possibilities for the future. I know a lot of you will feel uncomfortable allowing for inactivity for an indefinite amount of time. But believe me, if you give yourself the space to do this you will then naturally begin to move into the part of The Shuffle phase where you begin to research and network, and you will find the next thing that will re-energize and re-engage you. When you enter The Shuffle phase you will find that you are better able to deal with the pain you began experiencing in the Toss In phase. You will also find you are better able to think on those events from the last cycle without becoming emotional. Rather, you can reframe what happened and logically process the information to find what worked and what didn’t work, giving you more expertise moving into this new cycle. This is also the phase where you will evaluate where you are in your life. You’ll examine your core values and feelings so you can decide what is really important to you in your life and that will help you decide where you want to move next and how you want to play that game. If you are in the beginning of this phase, you’ll likely feel that you have lost control in this area of your life and that may spill over into other areas because you will second guess yourself. However, you’re also likely feeling like there’s an opportunity here for you – you just don’t know what it is yet. This is also a phase in which you will likely experience spiritual growth because of the need to go inward and connect with something greater, causing a leap in personal growth. At the end of this phase you will have more inner strength, a plan to grow, and renewed energy. You will have a new vision for the future which will give you hope and a new purpose. With all of this you will have more enthusiasm going into each day and will probably be breathing a sigh of relief that you can now move on and DO something. If you allow yourself to do the kind of work required in this phase (reflecting and researching) you will be able to focus on the right activities that will move you forward, rather than engaging in activities that are just what you think you “should” be doing. If you find you are enthusiastic about researching, exploring new ideas, and networking and connecting with people who can move you forward in this area, you are likely well into this phase. I believe that because we are getting news about some of the restrictions due to COVID-19 being lifted many of us are starting to come out of the Toss-in phase and getting into the Shuffle phase. You may have come to a place of acceptance that while some things will be allowed this summer it will be far from normal. In the Toss-in phase there is grief for what was lost, in the Shuffle phase you begin to think about creating some new activities and traditions. I’ve already had friends say, “we can’t sit in a restaurant but we can grab take out and sit 6 feet apart either on a large blanket or at a picnic table.” You may have already started reaching out to people you know to explore new business or career opportunities. You team may be literally “shuffling” responsibilities to allow for more growth and development. If you’re not there yet, don’t worry. This phase begins with contemplation. That can look like long walks by yourself, sitting in your yard or staring at nothing. As you move toward the end of this phase you begin researching and networking to explore ideas. Wherever you are, you are the perfect place for you. Here are some things that may help you take advantage of The Shuffle phase. First, trust that everything you need to move through this phase will come to you. You don’t have to control or force it, just let it unfold and follow what interests you. Your curiosity and your interests are your north star right now. Second, if you’re starting to reach out to others, only give your time and energy to those who want your highest good.  Avoid those who seem to be pushing or pulling you in a direction that doesn’t feel good or make sense to you right now. If you can sense judgment coming from them, just put some space between you and them for a while. Third, when you’re ready to take a little bit of action, don’t overthink it. Just start somewhere. You can always pivot if your first moves aren’t giving you the information that you need. Fourth, there may be some anxiety and you will likely find yourself coming face-to-face with beliefs or automatic ways of being from the past that make you anxious and hold you back. Confront them and challenge the truth of it. For instance, for me an old belief that I get confronted with on occasion is the belief that if I have needs then I am burdensome and a bother to people. In this phase, that would hold me back from reaching out to others to ask them to impart their wisdom to me. The reality is, those with wisdom crave the opportunity to pass on what they know to those who are ready to receive it. When I am confronted with thoughts like, “they have so much going on, I don’t want to disturb them”, I have to consciously let that go and trust that if I they really don’t have time for me, they will kindly let me know. Lastly, when you’re ready, begin creating goals and a plan to accomplish those goals. Then decide how and when you want to begin. Tap on those people who have your highest good at heart. They want to help in this stage because you are acting in alignment with your own highest good. If this was helpful to you, I’m going to ask a favor. Please share this episode with a friend or colleague whom you know could benefit from this information. It’s sharing resources that helps us all get through tough times. In September of 2017 I did a few episodes on the Cycle of Change. Given what we are going through currently I think this is a good time for a review. I was first introduced to the concept of the cycle of change when I was getting certified as a coach through iPEC Coaching. They had a nice analogy of the cycle of change as a card game. The Cycle of Change Change occurs in a cycle and we’re always in some part of the cycle of change in every area of our lives. Each part of your life is likely in different parts of the cycle. Because we tend to interpret different stage of the change cycle as good or bad, we commonly have the experience of feeling like there are always some areas of our life in which we are winning and other areas that feel like we are struggling. In this episode I’m going to give a brief overview of The Cycle of Change and discuss the overarching phase we are currently going through during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using the card game analogy for The Cycle of Change there are several phases. Before you play a card game you have to decide what game you’re going to play. This usually happens as you’ve started to shuffle the cards so this phase is called The Shuffle Phase. The game is chosen and cards are dealt. During The Deal Phase your mind is considering your resources, the other players, a strategy is chosen and you are formulating a plan. Then you move into the phase called Play the Game. Obviously, this is the phase of movement and action. Then the game comes to a close and you are now in The Toss in Phase. During this phase you are absorbing what just happened and either celebrating a victory or considering how you feel about defeat. Phase 4: Toss In All things come to an end and typically people are rarely ready for the cycle to end because when you’re in the Playing the Game phase there’s a lot of energy and excitement. At the end, the Toss In, there is loss, grief, confusion or a lack of clarity for what’s next. Whether it is the end of a job role or a relationship, people in this part of the cycle are usually unhappy and cannot see how they will be able to go through it all again. In this part of The Cycle of Change you will take little action on your own and resist change because of fear and uncertainty, and depending on how the last phase ended, there may be a lack of hope. In this phase you may also feel victimized and like you don’t have control over your circumstances. You may find yourself being grumpier, ill at ease, and even experiencing pain more. At the end of the Toss In, there can be an intense state of “hibernation” or “cocooning”. If you’ve read my book, Accomplished, you’ll be very familiar with. This state eventually passes, and if you let yourself just be during this phase you will naturally find yourself getting renewed and re-energized, ready for the next phase. Does this all sound familiar to what we’ve been going through lately? When our events were cancelled, when the schools and business establishments were closed, when the Stay at Home orders were issued, we all found ourselves unexpectedly in The Toss In phase. This is why so many of us have been experiencing feelings of grief. We are grieving a way of life that will either take a long time to get back to or may never be the same again. Here is some guidance for you that may help to ease the discomfort of being in this phase. Allow yourself to experience all the thoughts and feelings created by loss and uncertainty. Don’t try to rush through it, or numb the experience, because you feel uncomfortable. It is normal for this phase to feel uncomfortable and unnatural, especially if you are living in a culture that celebrates achievement, productivity, and getting things done. It’s okay to give in to the need to withdraw for a while because the reflection and contemplation you will do while you are feeling low energy is critical to gaining clarity to go into the next phase. I also want to underscore that numbing this experience by overindulging in sugar, alcohol, tobacco, Netflix, exercise, etc. will prevent you from doing the deep work that strengthens you and provides clarity for the next stage. I’m not judging having anything in small doses and moderation. It’s using these things to distract yourself from uncomfortable thoughts and feelings that will cause suffering in the long run. If you’ve ever found yourself stuck in indecision because you just had no clue what you wanted or didn’t want, it was probably because you skipped past the Toss In phase and so never got the information you needed to do the next phase well. In this stage of grieving you are doing an analysis of what went right and what went wrong while you were in the last Cycle of Change. You are considering your thoughts, feelings, actions and the results you got during that cycle. Many of us have been looking at the lifestyle we were living in the last few years and questioning if that’s how we want to move forward. All of this is important information that you need to synthesize, and then integrate, to strengthen you to move forward. Do the work. And the work looks like being with yourself even if it feels yucky. It’s okay to vent to release the emotion. Fear, anxiety, doubt, loss and anger are all normal during this phase. Find people you trust implicitly and make it clear to them you don’t need them to fix you or make you feel better, you just need them to hear you and validate where you are. Let them know you’ll tell them when you are ready to take some action but until then you need them to respect where you are in the process. It may help to explain to them that this is a grieving process. Look for the positives. What is going well? What can you count on? This will give you some foundation to stand on while other things feel like they are coming undone. Lastly, be good to yourself. Give yourself some guilt-free space to just be for a while without the need to do, accomplish or achieve anything. Remember, this too shall pass but don’t force it. Otherwise, you’ll just find your back here again without having made any progress. If this was helpful to you, I’m going to ask a favor. Please share this episode with a friend or colleague whom you know could benefit from this information. It’s sharing resources that helps us all get through tough times. Do you ever feel like you’re so busy with getting things done that you’ve forgotten why you started the journey, this particular path you’re on, to begin with? You’re not alone. The world these days seems less joyful and increasingly exhausted, but the answer lies in one word: alignment. HeatherAsh Amara, author and worldly professor, will help you not only restore your alignment but bottle it and store it for the winter months ahead.  HeatherAsh is the author of The Warrior Heart Practice as well as many other books like The Warrior Goddess Training, A Little Book on BIG Freedom, Warrior Goddess Way, and Awaken Your Inner Fire. She's also the co-author of other books like The Seven Secrets to Happy, Healthy Relationships with Don Miguel Ruiz, Jr. Raised in Southeast Asia, HeatherAsh has traveled the world since childhood and is continuously inspired by the diversity and the beauty of human expression and experience that she comes across. She’s dedicated to inspiring depth, creativity, and joy by sharing the most potent tools from a variety of world traditions. Uncover the truth of what it means to live an authentic life!  Key takeaways: The seasonal submission. Have you ever noticed that seasons of the year resemble the different cycles of our life? Spring and summer are filled with birth and expression while fall is about letting go and winter revolves around stillness and going into the darkness. The SECRET to boldly stepping into the cold, dark months of your life is . . . [12:46]. The happy dilemma. Before we’ve learned how to speak we experience life in a whole new way–laugh without restriction, tantrum when things just don’t feel right, and lose ourselves in wonder. Then enters the influence of the world, and with it, its external rules. Not anymore! Break the cycle every single time by asking yourself this ONE question . . . [17:54]. The soulful question. How do you find a way to do more of what you love? So many of us seem depleted and overwhelmed in our busy modern world. But in those moments where we’re the most joyful, where time seems to fly, and we get a little lost–those are the moments, the fire we need to reconnect with. To do more of what you love, try THIS . . . [24:29]. The emotional refresher. Based on the four chambers of the heart, the first chamber revolves around asking yourself: what am I feeling? It’s a question that goes beyond your mental wellness and taps into your physical wellbeing. Sound simple? The ONLY thing you must remember to master the first chamber is . . . [30:00]. The archaeologist’s journey. Did you know there are layers to the stories you tell yourself? Given some continuous reflection, you’ll be able to organize your ‘layers,’ identify the actual situation you’re in, and base your story off of your experiences–and yours alone. Ready to give it a try? Start HERE . . . How strong’s your self-awareness? Do you feel strongly about the life you’re living, as though you’ve faced any and all self-doubt and have risen to seeing your internal mission a reality--whatever that may be? If the answer isn’t an ecstatic “Yes!” then it’s time you listen up as Matt Hogan, certified professional coach, shares his real-life experiences and advice for looking fear head-on and becoming utterly transformed. Matt's journey has had many, many different routes. During his teens to early 20s he struggled with drug addiction, fought destructive relationships, and ran through the legal system. He traded those substance abuse addictions for addictions to work and society's definition of success. Ultimately, after years of career achievement, Matt decided it was time to leave his job and lean into experiential pursuits; in other words, to live a purposeful life. Hear his journey, listen to his personal advice, and learn the steps you need to face your reservations that hold you back from living a more authentic life. Your new self’s waiting--start the conversation today! Key Takeaways: The needed friend. We all need a support system--someone we can lean on who gives us a trusting and safe space to be vulnerable--but what if you don’t have that someone? May the hunt begin! When looking for your biggest champion, look for these TWO qualities . . . [10:17]. The needed change. You’re living the “onscreen” life where you’re in a committed relationship, you have a good-paying job, and your annual getaways make others jealous, but still it remains--the void; that feeling that something’s missing. When do you know it’s time to shake things up? When your life starts to look like THIS . . . [22:04]. The needed practice. Every now and then you imagine living a new life that’s vastly different--so much so that it overwhelms you and you just can’t stop thinking about it. How can you tell if the idea is actually meaningful enough to look into or simply another fleeting daydream that passes by? Try this EXERCISE . . . [36:41]. The needed lesson. So often we do the work on ourselves--therapy, meditation practices, breaking bad habits–but in the end, the world around us hasn’t changed one bit. Is there a way to shape our surrounding culture and better ourselves at the same time? Yes! The SECRET is this . . . [47:08]. The truth is that in fighting the “in-between,” nothing truly gets resolved. Take a listen for how to live in the moment, even during the uncertainty of it all, and be better, more connected than ever. Key takeaways: Three step plan. All too often we get busy with the day-to-day, but during the holidays we hit our peak of busyness; and through it all, we miss what’s going on internally–in our mind, our heart–that our soul remains unsettled. The BEST advice to tap into your unresolved mindset is this . . . [03:54]. The big question. As we near 2020 ask yourself, “what is it that the last year has brought to you? It’s that time of year where the idea of love is glorified through romantic comedies and scenes of people pouring their hearts out for a chance to have a partner to spend the rest of their lives with. This notion of one-true, everlasting love--POP! Susan Piver, prolific writer on modern relationships, brings you back to the reality of what love really is and how to truly grasp it once and for all. Susan’s the New York Times bestselling author of nine books, her most recent, The Four Noble Truths of Love: Buddhist Wisdom for Modern Relationships, was released in May 2018. Susan has been a practicing Buddhist since 1995 and graduated from a Buddhist Seminary in 2004. She’s an internationally acclaimed meditation teacher known for her ability to translate ancient practices into modern life. Her work has been highly featured across all media including The Oprah Show and The New York Times, and in 2011, Susan launched The Open Heart Project, which is becoming the largest virtual mindfulness community in the world. Get ready to sink into a space of love within every relationship in your life--starting now! Key Takeaways: Your loving need. When most people long for one true love that will make everything just fall into place, they’re not really longing for companionship--it’s something much deeper and self-revealing. What they REALLY want is this . . . [06:35]. Your loving adjustment. The first noble truth in Buddhism describes how nothing in life is permanent. Everything changes; nothing stays the same–good or bad. It’s not a concept that’s new, so why is change so painful for us? The TRUTH is this . . . [16:14]. Your loving discomfort. It’s completely natural to have expectations. We live in a world where we expect people to be kind and honest to us--and why shouldn’t we? But how do you respond when your expectations are shattered? Next time this happens, turn it all around by asking yourself these TWO questions . . . [22:36]. Your loving embrace. Here’s what we know: the idea of love--the part where butterflies soar and everything is perfect--is fleeting. People change as well as your surrounding environments. So what’s the inside scoop for keeping that ‘magic’ alive in a relationship? The SECRET sauce is this . . . [36:59]. Tune in and turn the volume up for a dose of inspiration and life lessons. Did you know that our society’s currently facing an epidemic level of loneliness? And that lack of connection is clinically proven to trigger our sympathetic nervous system, leading to a death spiral to our health? Well--good news! Thanks to leading psychiatrist and educator in the field of human relationships, Amy Banks, hope is very much not lost. Amy’s also a speaker and author dedicated to spreading the scientific knowledge that people need healthy, human relationships for emotional as well as physical growth and well-being. She’s the first person to bring relational, cultural theory together with interpersonal neurobiology and is the foremost expert in this combined field. She has spoken nationally and internationally on the neurobiology of relationships. Amy's a popular interviewee on the topics of loneliness, friendship, and the neuroscience of relationship--having been quoted in the New York Times, O Magazine, Health Magazine, and more. Her very popular blog, Wired to Love, is published online in Psychology Today. Amy co-authored the book of Wired to Connect as well as authored Four Ways to Click: How To Rewire Your Brain For Stronger, More Rewarding Relationships. Take a deeper look at your current relationships to be wiser and stronger for it, and then lead the way! Key Takeaways: Our cultural belief. In 1928 President Hoover described a true American as someone who could stand on his own two feet, one who was completely self-reliant. 91 years later we’re still trying to build ourselves up to this image, but why? How can we reverse the toxic trend in a healthy, confident manner? Start HERE . . . [07:06]. Our playground grief. Were you ever on the schoolyard and not chosen to be part of the team, excluded and hurt to be left out? Turns out that social pain could be more common and normal than you might think! Internally that rejection sets off an alarm in your brain and does some wondrous things. Next time you feel left out, try THIS . . . [25:09]. Our first connection. Are you someone who can easily connect with others on the first go? Or does approaching a stranger and getting to know them one of your deepest, darkest fears? If you’re the latter--you’re not alone! The REAL reason making new friends can be hard and terrifying is . . . [30:00]. Our healed self. Acceptance; inside us all, we deeply want it from others. Good news--despite what others might say, that need can be a strength, and with a little work, it can be easier to master than you might think. Leave it to neuroscience! From the moment we’re born we’re physiologically built with an innate sense to feel connected–to our parents, our siblings, our world. It’s instinctual. So what happens when the world you’re born into or the one you’re raised in turns out to be dark and isolating? Niobe Way, Professor of Developmental Psychology at New York University, shares the research behind “bad people,” and a clear, viable solution on how to change our self-destructive culture. Beyond being a professor, Dr. Way’s also the Founder of The Project for the Advancement of Our Common Humanity at NYU. From this project, Dr. Way emphasizes the Think and Do Tank that draws from the science of human connection in order to create a just and humane world. “Our theory of change is that transforming the way that we see each other will transform the way we treat each other,” says Dr. Way. Her work focuses on the intersections of culture, context, and human development with a particular focus on social and emotional development and how cultural ideologies influence developmental trajectories. Listen in as Dr. Way shares insight from her in-depth research and latest book, The Crisis of Connection. A more connected, healthier, and happier you starts NOW! Key Takeaways: The universal issue. All too often we criticize ourselves for over-feeling, for not acting with our mind first. Nothing can feel more devastating than being rejected when you put yourself forward emotionally. But what does that do for us as a culture? The research says THIS . . . [13:48]. The simple solution. It seems that all around us people are living in despair. They’re lonely, they’re unfulfilled, and they’re depressed. But at the root of it all, the answer is clear. The ONE thing we need to focus on as a society, as a whole, is . . . [24:41]. The universal change. Our world’s struggling deeply with its need to connect. In every corner of every neighborhood, people are desperately reaching out to build relationships, to find unity. Who are you and what makes you whole? Do you have triggers such as sounds or scents that remind you of a familiar feeling? Why do you look at the world the way you do? So many of your questions can be answered by scientist and Professor of Psychiatry, Dr. Stephen Porges, whose current work is unlocking the ways we can see another side of ourselves--our truest form. Dr. Stephen is a distinguished University scientist at Indiana University where he’s the Founding Director of the Traumatic Stress Research Consortium. He's a Professor of Psychiatry at the University of North Carolina and Professor Emeritus at the University of Illinois at Chicago as well as the University of Maryland. Dr. Stephen has served as president of the Society for Psychophysiological Research and the Federation of Associations in Behavioral & Brain Sciences. He’s a former recipient of the National Institute of Mental Health Research Scientist Development Award. Dr. Stephen has published more than 300 peer-reviewed articles and in 1994 he first proposed and pioneered the Polyvagal Theory, a theory that links the evolution of the mammalian autonomic nervous system to social behavior and emphasizes the importance of the physiological state in the expression of behavioral problems and psychiatric disorders. Listen in and learn more about who you are--more now than ever! Kay Takeaways: Butterfly effect. Did you know we go through three evolutionary stages directly linked to those of vertebrates? To be clear, mammals are vertebrate and humans are mammals. The correlation between the two is eye-opening on how it affects your physiological state, let alone your health. Your THREE transformative stages are . . . [13:41]. Tranquility zone. Did you know that you have triggers that give you a sense of security? The sounds of certain music or someone’s voice are a couple of them. All your senses slowly drop, as do your defenses. There are simple ways to develop this sense of safety in ourselves and in others, start HERE . . . [25:34]. Connection boost. Did you know there’s no such thing as winning an argument? Once a person becomes physical--such as crossing their arms or retracting in some way--the conversation is over and therefore, the discussion is over. Winning isn’t an option. To strengthen any relationship–work, home, social–give these TWO evaluation methods a try . . . [39:44]. When things around you begin to fall apart, how do you react? Are you the first to blame, the first to run from? So many of us would rather turn against ourselves–our own emotions, experiences, bodily sensations–rather than really dive deep and let the hurt be what heals us. Steven C. Hayes, Ph.D., a psychotherapy developer and prolific author, is on a mission to alleviate human suffering and get behind the real reasons we call ourselves the enemy. Dr. Hayes is Professor of Psychology at the University of Nevada and author of 44 books as well as over 600 scientific articles. He's especially known for his work on acceptance and commitment therapy—also known as ACT—one of the most widely used and researched acceptance and mindfulness-based methods of psychological intervention. It’s also used in coaching to assist with organizational training, leadership, and performance. Dr. Hayes’s book, Get Out Of Your Mind And Into Your Life sold over 30,0000 copies worldwide and was a bestselling self-help book in the United States. He has received several national awards, the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Association of Behavioral and Cognitive Therapy, and is ranked among the most cited psychologists in the world. Unravel and liberate everything you truly are and never look back. Key takeaways: Removing the mask. Anxiety, depression, sadness—these are deep emotions that can bury or elevate you. So what’s it going to be? How do you rise when the feelings are so overpowering that you feel you’ve lost your way? By knowing this ONE motto . . . [13:56]. Taking step one. You are who you are. The good, the bad, and all the in-between—but who is this person and have you truly come to accept who you really, deeply are? If the answer is no, do you wonder what your future looks like? Take a glance HERE . . . [23:31]. Becoming more flexible. Can you imagine a world where you’re a conscious human being, open to your thoughts, feelings, memory, and bodily sensations while being able to focus on your values against the behavior linked to it? Is it even possible?! The answer is a strong YES. Get started by knowing THIS . . . [33:14]. Accepting the hurt. How often are you in an emotional situation where you’d rather avoid than accept? Isn’t it easier to pour a glass of wine, to binge-watch a show, or medicate? Of course it is. But doing so also avoids some amazing possibilities ahead. Start seeing what’s possible by taking this TEST . . . [45:30]. Let’s go back to the beginning–way back–before you can remember what it ‘meant’ to be, speak, or act like a girl/boy. Before the bullies, the media influences, the overall social norms–who were you? Dr. Michael Reichart, an expert in the field of child development, shares his deep research and strategies on creating a healthy childhood that leads to a healthy adulthood. Dr. Reichart’s the founder and the head of The Center for the Study of Boys and Girls Lives, which is a research collaborative with the University of Pennsylvania. He's an applied and research psychologist who’s immersed himself in clinical research and consultative experiences that have afforded him a profound understanding of the conditions that allow a child to flourish in their natural environment and context–in family, in school, and in society. Dr. Reichart has created and run programs in inner communities as well as some of the most affluent suburban areas around the world. He’s published numerous articles and several books, including his latest How To Raise A Boy: The Power Of Connection To Build Good Men. Nourish the child within; nourish their full humanity–starting with yourself. Key takeaways: The real landscape. From the moment we’re born we’re connected, yearning to meet eye-to-eye, skin-to-skin, and have a bond with one another. So what happens down the line of living life that changes all that? How do we get so off track? Eye-opening research shares THIS greatest secret . . . [11:21]. The identity machine. From the beginning, you’re told who to be and what rules to follow–from your parents to your teachers, down to the movies you watch. Your world may have decided who you are . . . but it hasn’t won yet! Get ready to turn back the tide. Start HERE . . . [27:12]. The one-on-one relationship. Michael dives deeply into the power of listening, starting at a young age and the dramatic effects doing so has on our ability to connect with others, and most importantly, to ourselves. Listen in as social entrepreneur Jesse Israel speaks about community-building and modern mindfulness that will not only awaken your consciousness but help in developing your whole human experience. As a co-founder of Cantora Records in his twenties, Jesse went from successfully signing multi-platinum bands and overseeing tech investment funds to transitioning into a public speaker and meditation teacher. Using his background in the music industry, Jesse created accessible points for people to get into wellness and meditation. He founded the social meditation group, Medi Club, as well as the mass meditation movement, The Big Quiet, which gathers thousands of people at legendary venues such as Madison Square Garden and The American Museum of Natural History for meditations. These events also feature rare performances from some of the most popular musicians in modern culture. Jesse’s been featured as an expert in his field in The Times, Vice, Fast Company, and more. His mission is to help leaders be exactly who they are meant to be. Where are you destined to go? Surrender to your path ahead, starting NOW! Key takeaways: The starting line. Living a full, content life seems tricky to find. If only there were warning signs on your path to let you know, ‘you’re going the wrong way!’ that could help guide you to where you’re supposed to be. Turns out, if you know where to look, the initial signs for personal growth aren’t too hard to find. Start HERE . . . [16:32]. The isolation breaker. Have you ever attended a family gathering or met up with friends after work and had the blahs afterward? That lingering loneliness that still hangs on even though people surround you? Fulfillment in social experiences can only be found when THIS is present . . . [39:29]. The identity rivalry. We all know someone, the person we look at in our lives and think, “Wow, they’ve got it all figured it out.” The question is, “do they really?” And what about their life makes yours any less in comparison? There are moments in your life that leave you paralyzed with doubt, making you feel like there’s nowhere to go or no one to turn to. But when you dig deep and look at the moment after things have settled--through fresh eyes--you’ll notice that all along you were never alone and it’s then that your true identity’s revealed. Listen in as Tony Degliomini, author, life coach, and recovered paraplegic shares his epic story that’ll encourage you to live a life of liberation through transformation. Tony’s the author of Believe, in which he shares his journey through rehab after a major cycling accident that left him temporarily paralyzed. This event led him to share his story in hopes of helping others get through difficult times in our lives. Tony’s a graduate of Rutgers University and a certified life coach through the Institute for Professional Excellence in Coaching. He’s worked in corporate management for over 30 years and sits on the committee for the Magee Hospitals Night of Champions which benefits the community with patient programs such as art therapy, facility dog program, pastoral care, as well as wheelchair sports teams. Take off the masks, rid yourself of pretenses, and get to know who you really are. Key takeaways: Before the revelation. It’s natural to look outside of yourself to define who you are--the job, the relationships, and all the material things that give you the false illusion that you’re living this life ‘on your own,’ free of needing anyone to get by. But the secret to finding your true self isn’t found through independence, isolation, or success, it’s found HERE . . . [11:14]. During the reboot. You’re IN it--a dark patch, a tough time, a moment that makes you feel like you’re never going to pull through. It’s time to hit ‘reset!’ The only way to get through this phase of uncertainty and onto the next phase of reassurance is by knowing THIS . . . [24:56]. After the acceptance. You’ve acknowledged that there are some things you simply don't have control over and you’ve grown the acceptance to feel your emotions for what they are. So, you’re good right? That’s all you need to know? False! The FINAL life lesson to learn is this . . . [30:13]. So many of us are living in the mundane. We clock in, we clock out, we enter, and we leave our life with a layer of general dissatisfaction. How do we even start to change our outlook or direction? Keep listening as Peter Matthies helps you define that “persistent itch” or yearning that something’s just not right. Peter’s a former venture capitalist and founder of The Conscious Business Institute. His previous experience includes serving as a principal for a global leading private equity and venture capital firm--Apex. He was also involved with the B Business partners--a $1 billion pan-European VC fund--cofounded an IT company and started his career at Andersen Consulting, now Accenture. After Peter discovered dissatisfaction with the way that most businesses operate, he took on a new path: The Conscious Business Institute, to create better, healthier, and sustainable ways of working and living. Mindful work experiences and a life well-lived start NOW! Key Takeaways: The inquisitive feeling. You’ve worked hard to be where you’re at in your career. Got the degree, made the sacrifices; and this is what you ultimately desired . . . isn’t it? When do you begin to recognize that this place in your life, in your career, isn’t what you want? The feeling starts HERE . . . [05:45]. The self-image revealed. You’ve bravely left the place of no return--your comfort zone--and suddenly, after much soul-searching, you’re learning who you really are. Where do you go from here? The TWO directions to go are . . . [11:29]. The cutoff bridge. You’re now at a place where you’ve discovered your true self and you’re ready--although somewhat hesitant--to move into the unknown career-wise. But what if you’re wrong? What if this was all a mistake and turning back isn’t an option? Through the fear of uncertainty, take the leap knowing THIS . . . [19:09]. The growing movement. There’s a balance that so many of us are searching for: conscious living and working. But does it actually exist? And how do we create such a thing in our own lives and workplaces?     Sanni McCandless is a transition coach for outdoor and adventure-focused individuals who want to create more intentional lifestyles. She helps her clients work through the limiting beliefs that often get in the way of creating the the life we really want.    Sanni quit her job at an energy efficiency startup a couple of years ago to start her own business and hasn't looked backed since. She spends her winters living and climbing in the moderate temperatures of Las Vegas Nevada, and her summers on the road and on the towers of the Yosemite valley, living and working out of a sweet van with her boy friend, the one and only Alex Honnold.      The first thing I noticed during my conversation with Sanni, is that she is truly wise beyond her years. She has the unique ability to articulate the frustrations and challenges a lot of us face, and even better, she has some practical solutions for confronting those challenges. Sanni examines the fears and self doubt that often get in the way of building fulfilling careers and lifestyles.    Most of us are inundated from a very young age with fearful messages about how we shouldn't question the status quo or how we should design our lives the way our parents did, or our older brother did. Most of us drift, that is we let external circumstances determine where we go in life, instead of our internal desires.      In contrast, Sanni asks the tough questions, the ones we probably  all should be asking ourselves.     1.What do I really want from life? To Spend all my time at a job I hate or isn't a good fit, or dedicating myself to something that's actually meaningful to me, and that I enjoy.    2 What am I willing to do to get to where I want? Make some more excuses and put it off or not think about it - or put in the work and grind until I get there.   And 3 What is holding me back? Why am I afraid of going after what I want? Allow not knowing where to start paralyze you, or the possibility of failure or judgment terrify you, or stepping up to the challenge and just going for it.   In my opinion, putting some thought into these questions is one of the best things anyone can do for themselves, no matter what situation or stage of life you're in.   Resources:   Sanni's business page https://www.sannimccandless.com   Sanni's Instagram Feed https://www.instagram.com/sannimccandless/   IPEC (Coaching certification) https://ipeccoaching.com

We have covered 3 of the 4 phases in the Cycle of Change using the card game analogy as first taught to me by iPEC Coaching. These are: The Toss In Phase, The Shuffle Phase, and The Deal Phase. Now we’re going to cover The “Play the Game” Phase. Phase 3: Play the Game (Action!) “Play the Game” is an exciting and mostly positive time during the Cycle of Change when you are all in to live your dreams and reach new levels of success, fulfillment and well-being. Whereas in previous stages you were either reflecting on the past or imagining the future, this phase is the time to be fully in the moment. You are living the strategy and the plan you created in The Deal Phase. It is a time of action but the amount of action you will take in this phase is based on your personality, how clear you are on your goal, how feasible your plan is and how much support you have. That’s why The Deal Phase is so crucial to set you up for success in this phase, though most plans will work if you can only get out of your own way. What that means is in the Play the Game Phase it’s important to manage your inner critic, which always comes to life when you are doing something new, big or scary. This is where self-doubt can start to plague you and if you allow it too much power you will unconsciously begin to self-sabotage. Know that it is natural and normal for your inner critic to try to have a field day with you. Change the perspective that hearing your inner critic is a bad thing. Rather, hearing your inner critic means you are playing full out and that’s a great thing. Manage Yourself to Remain Flexible If you are able to manage your inner critic you will, for the most part, feel harmonious, optimistic, determined and fully alive. If you are able to remain flexible you will be able to pivot and adjust if things don’t go according to plan. Let’s face it, things rarely go exactly according to plan so it’s important not to get too attached to the plan or judge yourself and others too harshly for not expecting the unexpected. When I first planned to self-publish my book last year I was only going to release an eBook in Kindle. A few weeks before the publish date I interviewed Honoree Corder and in our post-interview chat she convinced me of the benefit of releasing a print version as well. What I didn’t realize was how different it would be to format a book for print versus a book for Kindle, and that last-minute realization ate up more than half a day. I was also launching a membership community with the release of my book. While the formatting mini-crisis was going on I also discovered the membership software was not playing nice with payment software. To add to the madness, unbeknownst to me my web developer became horribly ill that week and so didn’t get my messages for a couple of days. All I knew was that I needed her and she had gone radio silent. I had also failed to communicate to my Graphic Designer the exact date I intended to submit everything to Amazon and so mock ups and final approvals for the cover all happened within days. Then there were videos, copy and worksheets that needed to be created and uploaded to the membership portion of my website. However, in all of this, I was 100% in, feeling fully alive, and rolling with everything whether it was going according to plan or not. Play the Long Game to Always Get Better While this stage is usually associated with wins and success, it can also be the setting for disappointments, setbacks, and new challenges. You can probably look back on times in your life where the Play the Game Phase of the Cycle of Change did not go well. If this is happening to you right now it’s important again not to judge yourself too harshly. Look on what is happening as a valuable lesson that you can examine and learn from so you go into the next Cycle of Change stronger and wiser. Place your focus on what is working and what is not working without judgment and you’ll be able to make adjustments and pivot pretty easily because you won’t be heaping the past and emotion on the situation. Remain nimble and empowered by staying curious and looking for opportunities no matter what is happening.  People typically love this phase the most out of all of the four phases and wish it would continue on like this indefinitely, or better yet, for the rest of their lives. Although that sounds great, chances are if you are still open to growth and being your best self you will be back in the Toss In Phase and the cycle will begin once again. It doesn’t mean you’ve backtracked, it actually means you are moving forward, even though it may not feel like it at first. In the last episode I continued our exploration of the Cycle of Change using the analogy of a card game which was first introduced to me by iPEC Coaching. If you have not listened to the first two episodes covering the Cycle of Change I recommend you go back to the episodes titled Respecting Where You Are on Your Journey and The Secret to Clarity is Reflection and Research, respectively. These are quick episodes and will catch up on The Cycle of Change. I mentioned in The Secret to Clarity is Reflection and Research how I had moved into the Shuffle Phase and so I required more time to reflect and begin researching different options for the direction of Women Taking the Lead. Another thing that I was fully aware of but it started to become a problem in this Shuffle Phase is the constant feeling I have of being busy. I feel, and I want to stress the word feel, I feel like I’m always overbooked and up against several deadlines. This causes me to constantly abuse the busy word and it impacts my mindset and how I “BE” in my life. What had been happening was I was not honoring my flow; I time-block to get project work done, and have separate time blocks for meetings and consults. But I find I am constantly giving away my project time blocks because, let’s face it, I consider other people’s time to be more important than my own. And here’s my dirty little secret. I am constantly working on the weekends because my projects get pushed from the work week to the weekend. Don’t get me wrong, I love the work I do, and would probably choose to do a little bit for my business every day but that’s not what’s happening. I wake up on Saturday and Sunday knowing I have to do several hours of work each day to play catch up before the work week begins all over again on Monday. I’m done with that. So on Saturday when I thought through what was happening and what I really wanted in this Cycle of Change for Women Taking the Lead I realized I don’t want to be doing project work every weekend. So I moved all my tasks to the coming week so I could not give my time away. Wish me luck and send me your love and energetic support as I commit to taking better care of myself, while leaving other people feeling honored and supported. Now, onto The Deal Phase. Phase 2: Deal (Preparing/Developing) In the Cycle of Change using the card game analogy, The “Deal” Phase comes after The Shuffle Phase and before Playing the Game. The Deal Phase is marked by an increase in activity – this will include networking, testing out interests or experimenting, training and skill building. Thus, the plan that was developed in the Shuffle phase is beginning put into action. You will have more energy and a more positive attitude because you now you can actually do something; you are following a path, you have a direction to go in. You’re open to new experiences, new people, and preparing yourself for the intensity of the next phase. When you are in this phase you are more optimistic, seeing life as an opportunity, and so you experience more confidence in this stage than in any other. You are the proverbial adventurous student of life eager to stretch, learn, and grow in new directions. When you first enter this this stage you will shy away from making commitments. Remember, this is the phase of experimenting and because of this you’ll tend to want to keep your options open and take things “one step at a time.” Before entering the next phase you’ll make a firm commitment to trust yourself and the choice you have made. In the next phase you will be assessing and evaluating the plan but what’s important in The Deal Phase is your ability to move to the point where you can make a choice to move forward and make something happen. Here you’ll also be looking around for allies, mentors and guides who can help to see you through the next phase successfully. You’re now developing a new plan that will take you beyond networking and experimenting. You will identify one or more goals for the next phase and the work at the end of The Deal Phase is to have a strategy and a plan formed. Anticipation, excitement and energy will increase as you gain more clarity around all of these pieces. There is also fear of failure or success, likely a combination of both, but you will be poised for action. What will be helpful to you in this phase is... Having a vision of what success will look like in the next phase. This will not only get you excited for what’s to come but may also help to identify any gaps in resources or training that you will need to set you up for success. In the last phase you were identifying your core values and how you wanted to live your life. Here it’s also important to know what brings you alive, what value you want to bring and at least a sense of what your purpose or mission is. If you can connect your goals to these things it will fuel your fire. Don’t overthink purpose, mission, and the value you want to bring. This can be something you experiment with in this phase. If you are externally motivated, have an accountability partner or group. This will keep you from backtracking. It’s not to say you cannot pivot based on what you are learning from your networking and experimenting. Forward movement coming from informed decisions is what you are looking for here. The accountability is about ensuring, for you, that this is what’s happening. As always, having trusted advisers who have your highest good at heart and who can listen intently, cheer you on, and help you clarify your next steps is priceless. If you have some like this who is also great at setting priorities and making a plan, especially if this is not your forte, bonus! A Tool to Have in Your Toolkit If you are in this phase and you have not yet read my book Accomplished: How to Go from Dreaming to Doing I’m going to strongly encourage you do so. A lot of what you need to do to navigate The Deal Phase successfully is in this book. From creating a vision to success, to getting at your core values, your purpose and mission, Superpowers, and even creating goals and designing a plan are in this book. It’s a tool you do not want missing from your toolkit. If you have read Accomplished and you are finding yourself in The Deal Phase, read it again. This book is a process that will take you to new levels of knowing yourself and finding success with each reading. Okay, that’s The Deal Phase. We only have one more phase to cover, Playing the Game phase, and I’ll be doing that in the next 100% Jodi episode. As always, I hope this was of value to you and here’s to your success! First, the Agents of Change conference was awesome! I want to give a huge thank you to Rich Brooks, Amanda O’Brien, Lindsay Babayan and the whole Flyte New Media team who made this such an awesome experience. A crap-load of work goes into an event like that and they made it look easy. Then, I got to hang out with a lot of you. The Women Taking the Lead community was in attendance at The Agents of Change. What was really fun was The Agents of Change conference happened the day after last Thursday’s 100% Jodi episode in which I introduced The Cycle of Change. Several of you came up to me to let me know you listened to the episode and it rung true for you as well. We had a lot of fun laughing about how much we resist the Toss In phase but we are looking forward to the next phase. And for my new friends…if we met at The Agents of Change and you’ve just started to listen to Women Taking the Lead, Welcome!! If you have not yet joined the private facebook group for this podcast you can find it at facebook.com/groups/womentl/. Last week, I introduced The Cycle of Change using the analogy of a card game as I learned it through iPEC Coaching. I gave an overview of the four phases you can find yourself, in any area of your life. I’m going to dive into each phase and I started with the phase that I was in with Women Taking the Lead, the Toss In phase. We don’t go through The Cycle of Change once; we go through it over and over again with each cycle ending in the Toss in. The Toss In is a stage of completion and probably some bittersweet feelings as you start to accept everything that happened in the last phase and move toward emotionally detaching from it and in some cases there may be a physical separation from the environment and people who were in the last cycle with you. So, using the card game analogy, this is when the last game comes to an end but you’re still alive and so you will continue to play one game or another. Again, it’s a continuous cycle. Phase 1: Shuffle (Thinking and Reflecting) The next phase, the “Shuffle” phase is a non-committal phase where you want to contemplate what was and what could be next. In the Toss In phase of non-action, the contemplating and reflecting had more to do with grieving and letting go of the past and what could have been. In The Shuffle phase the contemplation and reflection moves toward focusing mostly on possibilities for the future. I know myself and a lot of you will feel uncomfortable allowing for inactivity for an indefinite amount of time. But believe me, if you give yourself the space to do this you will then naturally begin to move into the part of The Shuffle phase where you begin research and network, and you will find the next thing that will re-energize and re-engage you. If you are in the beginning of this phase you’ll likely feel that you have lost control in this area of your life and that may spill over into other areas because you will second guess yourself. However, you’re also likely feeling like there’s an opportunity here for you – you just don’t know what it is yet. This is also a phase in which you will likely experience spiritual growth because of the need to go inward and connect with something greater causing a leap in personal growth. At the end of this phase you will have more inner strength, a plan to grow, and renewed energy. You will have a new vision for the future which will give you hope and a new purpose. With all of this you will have more enthusiasm going into each day and will probably be breathing a sigh of relief that you can now move on and DO something. If you allowed yourself to do the kind of work required in this phase (reflecting and researching) you will be able to focus on the right activities that will move you forward, rather than engaging in activities that are just what you think you “should” be doing. If you find you are enthusiastic about researching, exploring new ideas, and networking and connecting with people who can move you forward in this area, you are likely well into this phase. I mentioned in the last episode that I was definitely in the Toss In phase. I don’t know if it’s because I had a chance to talk about on the podcast and with some of you at The Agents of Change conference, or if it’s because I’ve finally started catching up on the sleep I’ve been deprived of all summer – you guys, I slept a full 8 hours after Agents of Change and then took a nap the next afternoon. A nap - I can’t remember the last time I took a nap. I’m not known for napping. I don’t know if it was from all of that but I can definitely feel myself in The Shuffle phase. As I mentioned before I had already made some changes to the podcast and they felt right but I can feel myself wanting to do a deep dive again to make sure the vision I’ve had for Women Taking the Lead still excites me or if I need to dream bigger or change some of my plans. I’ve started working with a digital strategist who just as a part of the discovery session has gotten me to think about who I am, what my gifts are, who I’m meant to serve and how I can best serve her. I’ve also started drawing to me people who are energy workers, intuitive coaches and even mediums – here’s where the spiritual and personal growth play in. I’ve let go of the discontent that after so much massive action in the last year things are still not exactly how I wanted them to be and I’ve moved on to dreaming about something new. It feels good to be here and I’ll be keeping you posted on my progress. For those of you who found your ears perking up and may nodding along as I went over The Shuffle phase here are some things that may help you now. First, trust that everything you need to move through this phase will come to you. You don’t have to control or force it, just let it unfold and follow what interests you. Your curiosity and your interests are your north start right now. Second, you’re starting to reach out to others. Only give your time and energy to those who want your highest good and avoid those who seem to be pushing or pulling you in a direction that doesn’t feel good or make sense to you right now. Even though the reality is those with wisdom crave the opportunity to pass on what they know to those who are ready to receive it. When I am confronted with thoughts like, “they have so much going on, I don’t want to disturb them”, or, “well that was a curt reply to my text, they must be annoyed with me”, I have to consciously let that go and trust that if I they really don’t have time for me they will kindly let me know. Lastly, when you’re ready, begin creating goals and a plan to accomplish those goals. Then decide how and when you want to begin. Tap on those people who have your highest good at heart. They want to help in this stage because you are acting in alignment with your own highest good.
