In a series of public remarks, President Trump has lashed out at Vladimir Putin for keeping up his attacks on Ukraine in defiance of Trump's stated desire for peace. Trump has called Putin “crazy,” has admitted he has no idea what Putin is thinking, and has even tweeted that Putin is “playing with fire!” Trump is plainly feeling embarrassed by Putin—who has only escalated his attacks amid Trump's peacekeeping efforts—and his humiliation shines through in his recent eruptions, given his campaign vow to end the war quickly due to his toughness and better relations with the Russian leader. Meanwhile, Republicans are now beginning to demand tougher sanctions on Putin, which would constitute another break with Trump—and a tacit admission that his efforts are failing. We talked to Cathy Young, a staff writer at The Bulwark who regularly analyzes Trump-Putin dynamics. She explains what Trump doesn't understand about Putin, how this leaves Trump badly unsuited for this moment, and why the long-term prospects for the war are pretty grim.  Looking for More from the DSR Network? Cathy Young's new hit piece on Curtis Yarvin (aka Mencius Moldbug) doesn't mince words. Titled The Blogger Who Hates America, it describes him as an "inept", "not exactly coherent" "trollish, ill-informed pseudo-intellectual" notable for his "woefully superficial knowledge and utter ignorance". Yarvin's fans counter that if you look deeper, he has good responses to Young's objections: Both sides are right. The synthesis is that Moldbug sold out. In the late 2000s, Moldbug wrote some genuinely interesting speculations on novel sci-fi variants of autocracy. Admitting that the dictatorships of the 20th century were horrifying, he proposed creative ways to patch their vulnerabilities by combining 18th century monarchy with 22nd century cyberpunk to create something better than either. These ideas might not have been realistic. But they were cool, edgy, and had a certain intellectual appeal. Then in the late 2010s, he caught his first whiff of actual power and dropped it all like a hot potato. The MAGA movement was exactly what 2000s Moldbug feared most - a cancerous outgrowth of democracy riding the same wave of populist anger as the 20th century dictatorships he loathed. But in the hope of winning a temporary political victory, he let them wear him as a skinsuit - giving their normal, boring autocratic tendencies the mystique of the cool, edgy, all-vulnerabilities-patched autocracy he foretold in his manifestos. https://www.astralcodexten.com/p/moldbug-sold-out

Why is the Gulf Stream and AMOC so important to our climate?

The Explanation

Complex ocean currents keep Europe warm and bring rain to Africa, but could they come to an end?The Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation (AMOC) is a system of ocean currents within the Atlantic Ocean, transporting warm water north towards the Arctic and returning cold water south towards Antarctica. The Gulf Stream is a component of AMOC, which carries warm water from the Gulf of Mexico, up along the eastern coastline of the United States. AMOC and the Gulf Stream enable heat to be distributed around our planet, and ensure Europe experiences milder weather compared to Canada, despite being on a similar latitude.AMOC's currents are driven by changes in water density due to changes in ocean salinity and temperature. Increasing ocean temperatures and freshwater flows from melting ice sheets due to climate change, have the potential to weaken AMOC. This could lead to cooler temperatures in Europe and a drop in rainfall in key agricultural areas in places like Africa and Asia, in turn affecting millions of people.Host Claire Graham talks to the BBC's Climate Editor Justin Rowlatt. Produced by Cathy Young for the BBC World Service.

How can a life coach help you?The book mentioned was Mending the Soul. This is designed to be done in a group/community setting.www.mendingthesoul.orgWe mentioned a course we have produced where Iris shares her story, and some ladies share their stories of why they had to choose divorce. An AS man shared what he wished he would have known and changed before his wife divorced him.https://courses.christianneurodiversemarriage.com/courses/educate-module-3About our Guests:Cathy Young:Cathy has two young adult sons and a very friendly cavoodlenamed Casper. This is a free preview of a paid episode. To hear more, visit andrewsullivan.substack.comCathy is a libertarian journalist and author. She's currently a staff writer at The Bulwark, a columnist for Newsday, and a frequent contributor to Reason magazine. She has written two books: Ceasefire!: Why Women and Men Must Join Forces to Achieve True Equality, and Growing Up In Moscow: Memories of a Soviet Girlhood. We talk about how her life under totalitarianism informed her views on the war in Ukraine, and the authoritarian illiberalism in the US. She cheered me up a bit.You can listen to the episode right away in the audio player above (or on the right side of the player, click “Listen On” to add the Dishcast feed to your favorite podcast app — though Spotify sadly doesn't accept the paid feed). For two clips of our convo — whether Russians actually support the war in Ukraine, and the gaslighting from liberals over woke extremism — pop over to our YouTube page.Other topics: how Soviet indoctrination of Cathy started in elementary school; the closet dissidents in her family; the members who were sent to the Gulag; Cathy reading banned books and hearing jokes against the Soviet leader; dissidents like Solzhenitsyn who became strong nationalists and imperialists; today's horrors of the Wagner group and trench warfare; possible end-games over Ukraine; the US partisan flip over Russia; CRT in Florida schools and elsewhere; DeSantis and illiberal government overreach; the pushback from FIRE; Chris Rufo; the wokeism in red states; mandatory DEI statements; and Cathy's optimism toward the woke threat based on her living through the fall of Soviet totalitarianism. Next week is the vegan activist John Oberg who will try to convince me to give up meat. Browse the Dishcast archives for a discussion you might enjoy (the first 102 episodes are free in their entirety). As always, send your feedback and guest recommendations to dish@andrewsullivan.com.Here's a listener on last week's convo with philosopher John Gray on the threats to Western liberalism:Really enjoyed your conversation — or should I say, your conversational tango — with John Gray. The urge to explain, teach and to understand propelled both of you forward. How interesting to listen as you figured out when to break into the other's conversational riffs (waiting for the occasional breath). There was not a hint of competition — “hey, it's now my turn!” — the sort of thing you hear in quasi-debates with ideological foes (necessary though they may be). There is much pleasure, downright fun, in exercising good, free, spirited talk.I have been reading John Gray for years, and you can even call me a fan. I love to read him even if he writes the same book or essay, thematically speaking, year after year, updated to suit the events of the day. He insists on telling us in acres of print that we shouldn't be fooled by the illusion of progress. Things haven't gotten much better, morally speaking. We humans concoct one belief after another to make us feel better, or superior. Be it worshipping sky gods or Karl Marx (or Ayn Rand), we fragile creatures are always trying to imagine what we're most definitely not. Gray does a good job of stripping us of our sense of agency. Reading him over the years I often want to fling his books out the window and take to bed.So I've wondered over the years why I still keep reading him and subjecting myself to his scolding critiques of our collective nonsense. Is it masochism? There's plenty of that going around. You both end up by invoking, inadvertently, the Nike swish slogan, “Just do it!” Forget optimism or pessimism. They don't do any good. Just get on with it, Gray tells us. Be buoyed by the spirit of conversation.Another listener touches on Trump:Great conversation as always. I even begrudgingly appreciate the scrambling that I must do to look up people, words, ideas, and events to fully engage in your valuable work.On your point that Trump “was a weapon used to bludgeon the people that were not listening to them” (around the 48 minute mark): after nearly four decades of the working-class's frustrations for being ignored on a bipartisan basis, Fox News, conservative talk radio, and associated media must be mentioned. They collectively acted as both an accelerant and misdirector of the long simmering and justifiable anger. Only then could President Trump become the chosen weapon. Senator Sanders could also have been the weapon — an absolutely more appropriate but likely less effective weapon.Another suggests a future guest:I was struck by what you wrote here: “We'll air a whole host of dissents to my Ukraine column next week, when I'll also be discussing the topic with dedicated war-supporter, Cathy Young, on the Dishcast.” Young doesn't need me to speak on her behalf, but I suspect what she really supports is victory for Ukraine and a just peace, not the kind of occupation that Ukrainians (like Estonians and so many others) remember too well. Supporting people who are fighting for their freedom, their culture, and their lives, is not the same as being a war-supporter.I enjoyed your verbal jousting with Anne Applebaum, so I'm really looking forward to your conversation with Cathy Young. Have you given thought to including a Ukrainian voice, maybe someone like Olesya Khromeychuk? A Ukrainian voice from the in-tray is posted toward the bottom of this post, along with more dissents over my writing on the war. Another plug for the pod:George Packer recently wrote a piece entitled “The Moral Case Against Equity Language,” which was just brilliant. I would love to hear a conversation between you and Packer.Good idea. More recommendations from this listener:Please read the interview with Vincent Lloyd by Conor Friedersdorf and the Compact essay that sparked it. It's very considered and still sensitive to the goals of the social justice movement. I'd be extremely excited to hear Lloyd on the Dishcast. He changed my thinking and I think he would bust you out of your rut of talking about social justice to people who you largely agree with.In a similar vein, Lulu Garcia-Navarro recently had an interview with Maurice Mitchell — the head of the Working Families Party — on how the left is cannibalizing its own power. Again, a very considered approach from the social justice perspective that I found very instructive. Here's what Michelle Goldberg recently wrote about him:Mitchell, who has roots in the Black Lives Matter movement, has a great deal of credibility; he can't be dismissed as a dinosaur threatened by identity politics. But as the head of an organization with a very practical devotion to building electoral power, he has a sharp critique of the way some on the left deploy identity as a trump card. “Identity and position are misused to create a doom loop that can lead to unnecessary ruptures of our political vehicles and the shuttering of vital movement spaces,” he wrote last month in a 6,000-word examination of the fallacies and rhetorical traps plaguing activist culture.I've yet to read Mitchell's essay, but it's on my list. Please consider having him as a guest as well. I've been a fan and subscriber to the Dishcast for a while, and I'm thinking that the social justice debate you're having has gotten stale. I think both these guests would spark new thoughts, new directions, and new challenges.Thanks. Another turns to gender issues:I just watched your appearance on Bill Maher's podcast. I loved it. Your sincerity and sadness about how gayness is getting twisted into some kind of bigotry was very apparent.  There's one thing I think you should have told Bill. It isn't just gays who have a “bigoted genital preference.” Straights also have “bigoted genital preference.” If Bill doesn't want to have sex with a trans woman, he's a bigot. It's a mystery to me why ANYONE would want to have a physical relationship with someone who would find that experience repulsive. But of course, as you said, it's all about control. And shaming — suggesting that there's something wrong with you for not finding their body type attractive.Another Dishhead writes:I saw your tweet about the drag show for babies and toddlers. I just want to share my own experience with you.

Should the U.S. give full military and political support to Ukraine in its war with Russia, short of sending troops? That was the subject of a Soho Forum debate held on Thursday, June 23, at the Porcupine Freedom Festival, or PorcFest, in Lancaster, New Hampshire. Cathy Young, a writer at the Bulwark and a contributing editor at Reason, is a Moscow-native who migrated to the U.S. as a teenager, argued that the U.S. government is correct to impose sanctions on Russia and to send military and economic support to Ukraine.  Scott Horton, who's the host of Antiwar Radio, argued that U.S. backing of NATO provoked the Russian invasion and that imposing sanctions and sending weapons has brought more death and destruction. He says the only role for the Americans is to call for an immediate ceasefire followed by negotiations. The debate was moderated by Soho Forum Director Gene Epstein. Learn more about your ad choices. In this podcast, Anna is with Cathy Young. Cathy found natural health and healing from a young age after suffering from severe eczema. When she fell pregnant, she had an overwhelming sense to follow her instinct and to birth both her children at home.   Three years ago, Cathy decided to follow her passion and study to become a Naturopath. Cathy has been training as a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist, with a focus on gut health and family health, and will qualify in 2023. Cathy and her husband Andrew ( a qualified Health + Self Sabotage Coach) raise their boys as holistically as possible and together have opened an online holistic health center/space where they support individuals and families to regain their vibrancy and optimal health.    Cathy also runs a transformational 6 weeks Gut Cleanse + Reset program. She believes that when our gut health is in balance, the rest of our health follows. The next intake is in September 2022.   They also talked about:   03:32   Cathy's background story in her healing journey 08:54   Cathy as a Naturopathic Nutritional Therapist 11:31   How Cathy and her family help other people 15:50   Best way to get in touch with Cathy 16:44   Don't take your health for granted 17:22   Stress has a huge impact on our health  22:14   Popping a pill isn't going to get to the root cause of your imbalance 25:51   What does freedom mean to Cathy Cathy also taught us that we need to focus on getting optimal health so we can do what we want when we want to do it.  Quotes:   “I want to always keep optimal health accessible for everyone. ”   “I've learned so, so much my own health journey, especially with my gut health the last couple of years as well, that I really want to keep it accessible for people, because I think we all deserve optimal health.”   “Because we're a family, and we want to help other families, you know, being, you know, from babies to, you know, even, you know, pregnancy and writing a preconception Care Program at the moment as well, that's going to be ready. And, you know, to help us get in our, you know, our best optimal health ready to conceive because digressing a little bit here. Now, when we fall pregnant, whatever toxicity is in us, and this comes from the male partner, as well, whatever toxicity comes from the male partner, and the men actually goes through to the fetus, the growing baby. ”   “The reason why I've decided to stop teaching and to go forward with health is because, you know, I want to be the teacher can you know, obviously, we're still pretty lucky for the school holidays and of course, but when you're in term time, life is so restrictive”   “You know, obviously, every part of your journey is meant to be etcetera, you know, for the spiritual sort of aspect, but this is 100%, my soul's purpose, this is the reason that I put on the planet to help people you know, live with optimal health and you know, get over imbalances and ailments, etc.”   “You know, life happens, doesn't it? And I'm not the type of practitioner that aims for perfection, perfection doesn't exist. And I think it's the it's the balance of latency or how we prioritize our health.”   “Healing naturally doesn't happen overnight as much as we would like that but we sort of make tweaks along the way and those little tweaks then end up being big massive changes when you do them consistently resulted in amazing health”   “So two things for me coming out of teaching I'm looking forward to having more freedom in my life and sort of use my time as I wish and you know, to study and to you know, to help people with their health so that's time freedom for me and I'm not going to be so restrictive in my term time. It's gonna take me years to get out of that time and holiday time. And then so the big one for me then is freedom and health because when we've got our optimal health we can choose to live our way as we choose because you know, if anybody's listening and have had ill health or imbalances with their health, it can be debilitating.”   “I think for me, it is freedom is having optimal health and being able to do what you want when you want.” Cathy Young Check out Cathy Young's social media accounts   Emai: hello@rootshealthandwellness.co.uk  Website: www.rootshealthandwellness.co.uk  Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/naturopathycathy   Do you want to be a speaker/guest on my podcast? Janczewski is a specialized teaching artist at The Arena in addition to ARENA DANCES' DanceON program for K-12 Minneapolis and St. Paul Public Schools. Janczewski's most recent project, THERMAL: Meditations on Climate Change, was researched and created in collaboration with the dancers at the Tofte Lake Arts Center (Ely, MN) to then be performed in residency for a month at the American Swedish Institute (Minneapolis, MN). Mathew has also recently been invited as a guest choreographer and teaching artist in various collegiate settings, including University of Minnesota - Duluth and Carleton College. Currently, Mathew is working on a new project that includes twelve dancers and an original musical score, Erased Steps, which uses dance (steps, improvisation, shape, and gesture) as a way to articulate his curiosities about past and present, industrial revolution, and the struggle of homelessness—actively allowing the vibration and energies that surface within the process of creating the studio to reverberate within the performance.

My guest today is Cathy Young. Cathy is one of my favorite journalists around today. She is a writer at The Bulwark and also a cultural studies fellow at the Cato Institute, a columnist for Newsday, and a contributing editor to Reason. Cathy, who was born in Moscow and came to the United States with her family in 1980, is also the author of the books; Growing Up in Moscow: Memories of a Soviet Girlhood, Ceasefire!: Why Women and Men Must Join Forces to Achieve True Equality. This episode is all about the war in Ukraine. Now, it's an unusually dense episode but I really recommend you pay attention to this episode because Cathy is just a wealth of information. We spend the first half-hour discussing the modern history of Russia, from the dissolution of the Soviet Union, where Cathy spent her childhood and her young adulthood to the Yeltsin era and the rise of Putin. We spend the next half-hour discussing the recent history of Ukraine, from the Orange Revolution in 2004-2005 to the Euromaidan protests and the Revolution of Dignity. We go on to discuss the alleged role of NATO expansion and creating this crisis, the role of Kremlin propaganda, the alleged presence of Nazis in Ukrainian leadership, American hypocrisy and foreign policy. We also talk about the DIS analogy between the war in Iraq and the war in Ukraine, the cancellation of everything Russian, the prospect of NATO intervention in Ukraine, the concept of nuclear blackmail, and more. Today on the Eye on NY podcast:  Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed a "red flag" law that will provide a mechanism for removing guns from individuals deemed to be a risk to themselves or others. He was joined by House Speaker Nancy Pelosi. The House passed a pair of gun safety measures this week.  State Sen. Joe Griffo is pushing a bill that would change the construct of the state Senate. Instead of districts that contain multiple counties, each of New York's 62 counties would have one state senator.  State Sen. Cathy Young announced this week that she is resigning to take a job with Cornell. Some pundits think it's because Young, as a Republican, is now in the minority. But there's another (possible) explanation.  Finally, an interview with Seth Wallace, the editor at the Palladium-Times in Oswego. Seth joined me to discuss what's happening in Oswego County, the county's congressional representatives and the state of journalism.

This week on the Eye on NY podcast:  An update on the absentee ballot count in the 22nd Congressional District race. State Assemblyman Anthony Brindisi, the Democratic challenger, leads Republican U.S. Rep. Claudia Tenney by more than 3,000 votes. There are still a few counties that need to finish counting before a winner can be declared, but it appears Brindisi will win the congressional race.  On Friday, state Senate Republicans gathered in Albany to elect a leader for the upcoming session. Current Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan, who has led the GOP conference since 2015, will continue to lead the party's membership. He beat out state Sen. Cathy Young for the minority leader's post.

Southwick. However, he doesn’t mention what Southwick really says (pp. 193-194); ‘In the spring of 1995, the Bosnian Serbs planned to attack Srebrenica definitively. Radovan Karadzić, President of Republika Srpska, issued a directive to the VRS forces to “complete the physical separation of Srebrenica from Zepa as soon as possible, preventing even communication between individuals in the two enclaves. By planned and well-thought out combat operations, create an unbearable situation of total insecurity with no hope of further survival or life for the inhabitants of Srebrenica.” This was an order to ethnically cleanse Srebrenica. The Personal is Political: is identity politics eating itself?

Academy of Ideas

In her 1969 essay, ‘The personal is political’, feminist Carol Hanisch defended consciousness-raising groups against the charge they brought ‘personal problems’ into the public arena. She argued that most difficulties women experienced in private were rooted in political inequality, so personal problems could spur women to political action in public life. Today, consciousness-raising groups are less common. Yet the idea that ‘the personal is political’ has survived, albeit giving way to an increasing fractious identity politics. The bizarre story of Rachel Dolezal, a white woman presenting herself as a mixed-race leader in the NAACP, has raised sharp questions about how we think about who a person is.  More broadly, there has been an explosion of different groups vying with one another for social recognition and respect. US writer Cathy Young argues this has led to a ‘reverse caste system in which a person’s status and worth depends entirely on their perceived oppression and disadvantage’. Burgeoning feminist clubs in universities and a diversity of gender, ethnicity, religious and cultural identity groups on college campuses and in the world of activism, reflects a substantial shift in how politics is understood and practiced in modern society. In particular, such groups are often divisively set up in competition with others’ claims to be the victim. Feuds over ‘intersectionality’ and ‘hierarchies of oppression’ have created internecine warfare between ‘terfs’ and the ‘trans’ community, between black women and white feminists, middle-class lesbians and working-class men: checking ‘privilege’ has become a routine pastime. As some critics of contemporary feminism note, identity politics inevitably turns each individual into her own group: demanding the right to assert ‘who I am’ becomes the primary goal of political action. So when Rachel Dolezal claims to be black, who are we to argue against her self-identification? Is this any different from the demand for public applause for Caitlyn Jenner – once known as Olympic athlete Bruce Jenner – who now self-defines as a woman? Is there a point past which we can’t choose our personal identity, as suggested by those who reject comparison between Dolezal’s ‘cultural appropriation’ (‘a glaring example of white privilege in action’) and Jenner realising who she/he always really was? Do today’s identity wars preclude possibilities for transcending gender, race, disability? Does the feminist war cry of ‘personal is political’ inevitably lead to such a narcissistic focus on self? Early this year, Cathy Young, author of two books and a columnist for The Boston Globe, the New York Times, and the Wall Street Journal (to name merely a few news outlets) caught Bob's attention with “Guilty Until Proven Innocent.” Her thoroughly researched article, which appeared in Reason Magazine, tells the story of how the government encourages kangaroo courts for sex crimes on campus. Young men are tried (if you can call it that) in quasi-judicial proceedings, with none of the safeguards Americans would expect. If found “guilty,” the damage to the accused is often greater than it would be in a criminal proceeding. This a feminism gone wild, or as Cathy identifies it, an uncontrolled and abusive “rape culture” crusade which damages both young women and young men. College should be an environment where the rules of civil society are taught and reinforced, not abused and ignored. Even worse, this loss of civil liberties takes place with the express encouragement of Washington, with none other than Joe Biden leading the charge. Who would have thought that sex could become an issue to be exploited for political gain? Will we become a nation of geldings (look it up)?By popular demand, John Rothmann joins Bob once again to cross rhetorical swords on the issue of school vouchers which has become particularly timely in light of the House Republican bill to fund vouchers. The teachers unions are up in arms. This is a wedge issue that separates parents of minority kids from the Democrats. Interesting, and fun.

"Why can't we all get along?" is the war cry of the immoderate moderate. You know the one, she tries to sell a softened extremism and chastises us for not adopting it. She's existed throughout the ages. Always trying to keep the peace by selling out someone's civil rights and saying "wow, how ungrateful, how rude, how outrageous" when that they catch on to the immoderate moderate's schtick. "Don't they understand that they have to behave themselves before they get to speak?" The immoderate moderate loves the idea of "behaving yourself". Who decides what "behaving yourself" entails? They do of course. What gave them the privileged position of deciding acceptable discourse? Well… the very control the oppressed group is fighting to end. Which is why the immoderate moderate isn't a moderate at all. They're extremists with an agenda to silence.
