Research shows that providing a high-quality education for children before they turn five years old yields great medium- and long-term benefits for students.In Clear Creek ISD early childhood education develops a lifelong love of learning and sets the foundation for the necessary cognitive, social, emotional, and physical development essential for future success. CCISD provides early learning opportunities for children who are four years old and as early as three years old for children with special needs through the Early Childhood Special Education Program.These opportunities include:FREE PRE-KINDERGARTEN (PRE-K) PROGRAM: The Free Pre-K Program is an early learning program to prepare children for kindergarten who are identified as at risk. Pre-kindergarten provides learning to children who are four years old on or before September 1st. See below to find out how to qualify for the Free Pre-K Program.TUITION-BASED PRE-K: Tuition-based pre-kindergarten is an optional program for children whose parents want them to attend pre-kindergarten in Clear Creek ISD to prepare them for kindergarten. This program is offered based on space availability. Dual language programs in Clear Creek ISD offer students the unique opportunity to learn Spanish or English, depending on the student's home language. Dual language programs are offered at five elementary schools as well as three intermediate schools to support the learning progression.While Dual Language Two-Way programs are offered in select schools, enrollment in the program is open to students outside of those attendance boundaries based on space availability. This is an application only program. Remote conferencing is a new initiative in CCISD that will launch on September 7, 2021 to support the continuation of learning for students who are home temporarily due to a medical condition, illness, COVID-19 or quarantine. Remote conferencing will be available for core subjects in all grade levels based on an hourly program schedule. Clear Horizons Early College High School, a CCISD school of choice, was established in 2007 on the South Campus of San Jacinto College to provide opportunities to student populations who are traditionally underrepresented in higher education environments. In the latest PHF Podcast, Karyn Juntunen from the Copper Country Intermediate School District joins host Michael H. Babcock and Portage Health Foundation's (PHF) Director of Community Health Michelle Seguin, M.D. to discuss school gardens, community gardens, seed saving, gardening in general and an upcoming virtual presentation that Juntunen will be leading. The podcast starts with updates to the CCISD Greenhouse Project, which was completed in 2019 at the CCISD's main campus in Hancock. The greenhouse is now completely operational, and was used over the last year to virtually help students better understand the process of growing. Juntunen also unveils her plans for what will happen this spring, including their popular fundraiser of selling “the best” starter plants. From there Dr. Seguin introduces last year's community garden projects. The foundation funded nine projects last year. One specifically discussed is the Ontonagon Village Housing Commission project's pedestal and raised bed gardens. To finish, Juntunen introduced her the Lake Superior Stewardship Initiative learning Series. Abbey Palmer from MSU Extension office and her will be hosting Seed Science & The School Garden on Wednesday, March 3 from 4:30 to 6 p.m. This is a free event open to teachers, community partners and parents. In this episode, we switch gears to a more serious note as we interview a local teacher turned entrepreneur, Andrea Johnson, who co-founded C MATH is EASY alongside Elsa Brown. They created this organization in tandem with original materials to "help a child or an adult understand the basic foundations of math." During a lesson prep, Andrea is perplexed to find a copyrighted workbook of theirs plagiarized seemingly verbatim. Despite their efforts to work alongside and possibly partner with these local educational institutions, it appears copyrighted material is being used but is not credited to the rightful author or organization. Andrea understands and delights in their organization's profound role in teaching others so "they can become their dream" yet feels like their hard work is being exploited rather than justly commended.
