From the BG Ad Group Studio this is your news minute on the Marietta Daily Journal Podcast presented by Credit Union of Georgia. Today is Friday, March 29th, and I'm Keith Ippolito. Lawmakers pass $36.1 billion state budget In a major move, the Georgia General Assembly has passed a $36.1 billion budget for fiscal year 2025, showcasing a $3.7 billion increase over last year. This budget brings significant raises for state employees and public-school teachers, and boosts funding for the state's Pre-Kindergarten program. State workers are poised to see $4,000 increases in their paychecks, with those in high-turnover sectors like law enforcement and welfare services receiving an extra $3,000. Teachers are looking at a $2,500 raise. Education is a big winner, with $243 million set aside for enrollment growth, $200 million for new school buses, and $108 million dedicated to ensuring each public school in Georgia receives a $45,000 school safety grant. The pre-kindergarten program got a $48.4 million lift, thanks to strong lottery sales, signaling a focus on improving early education in terms of class size and teacher salaries. Moreover, the budget addresses tech upgrades in state prisons with $10.7 million and boosts healthcare provider reimbursement rates by $18.6 million. Additionally, $6.3 million will fund free meals for 64,000 low-income children. Leveraging the state's $16 billion surplus, the legislature is allocating $1.2 billion in cash for infrastructure projects across schools and state agencies, moving away from traditional borrowing methods. Awaiting Governor Kemp's signature, this budget underscores Georgia's dedication to enhancing the lives of its citizens and laying down a robust foundation for the state's future prosperity. To the Classroom: Conversations with Researchers & Educators
My guest today is Dr. Elizabeth Sulzby whose research focus is on early language and literacy development in Pre-Kindergarten. She talks about research studies she did with preschoolers in NYC years ago where teachers do repeated readings of storybooks—even those with complex language and story structure—and study children's rereadings and retellings. These studies formed the basis for her emergent reading classification scheme. We also talk a bit about emergent writing development in prekindergarten and its parallels to reading development. Later, I'm joined by my colleagues Gina Dignon and bilingual educator Clarisa Leal for a conversation about practical takeaways for young children and multilingual learners.****Read a full transcript of this episode and learn more about Jennifer Serravallo.AccessEmergent Literacy: Writing and ReadingMore on Dr. Sulzby's KLP Literature ProgramThe Reading Strategies Book 2.0****More about this episode's guest:Elizabeth Sulzby is best known for her pioneering work in emergent literacy. Prior to coming to the University Michigan in 1986, Sulzby was associate professor with tenure at Northwestern University. During 1996-97, she was a visiting professor at Leiden University, the Netherlands, where she collaborates with A.G. Bus and Marinus H. Van IJzendoorn in studies of attachment and emergent literacy. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Virginia and her M.Ed. from the College of William and Mary. She did post-B.A. study in philosophy at Harvard University after receiving her B.A. in philosophy and English from Birmingham-Southern College. Sulzby is the author, with W. H. Teale, of Emergent literacy: Writing and Reading, and has published her research on children's emergent reading and writing development in numerous journals. Her studies of emergent bookreading and emergent writing have been conducted with diverse groups of children aged 2-7, including African American, Spanish-English bilingual immigrant, Appalachian, and European American children.Research in emergent literacy has led Sulzby in a number of related directions. She has studied the transition from emergent to conventional literacy, designing techniques for assessing literacy from toddlers to early elementary grades in a manner consistent with emergent literacy insights. Her studies, with Bus, van IJzendoorn, Teale, and Kaderavek have bridged the parent-child intervention studies and children's independent emergent readings. Her research has been funded by the Spencer Foundation, NIE/OERI, the Research Foundation of NCTE, and by various computer and software companies, including IBM, Apple Computer, and Jostens. Sulzby is a Fellow in the APA and NCRLL and has served on many editorial and research review boards. Recently, she served on OERI's advisory group for a center for early literacy agenda, NCEE's New Standards Primary Literacy Panel and was a member of the National Academy of Sciences/National Research Council's Committee on the Prevention of Reading Difficulties in Young Children (Snow, Burns, & Griffin, 1998). Listen, it's no secret that teaching preschoolers isn't easy peasy. It's full of ups and downs with lots of bumps along the way, which leaves you exhausted from trying to find a balance between work and life. You just wish somebody would tell you what to teach and when to teach it, so you can find time to do the endless mounds of laundry or cook the occasional meal for your family. If any of this sounds familiar to you, I want you to know that you're not alone. In this episode of Elevating Early Childhood I'm sharing my top 3 tips for knowing what to teach and when to teach it in your pre-K classroom.

On this episode of the Shut Up And Teach Podcast, I spoke with Larry Carey. Larry has a background in teaching Pre-School and early childhood development. He shared how he developed a passion for literacy. Larry's book, Alliteration Boosts Communication: The ABCs of Vocabulary, is highly differentiated and a lot of fun while exposing students to literacy components including letter/sound correspondence and vocabulary. He is also a PBIS Coordinator, and he shared some wisdom and insights into how PBIS can be implemented effectively. . . . Mr. Larry Carey is an educational consultant and owner of Larry Carey LTD. He is also in his first year as a Positive Behavior Intervention and Supports Coordinator in Columbus City Schools. Prior to this role, he was acting as a teacher on special assignment for the NEA Organizing Fellowship Academy. This exclusive fellowship selected only twelve educators across the country to learn the role of organizing and how to engage, assist, and support educators throughout the United States. Mr. Carey's journey began as a student in the Columbus City Schools, where he attended Indianola Elementary, Johnson Park Middle, and graduated from Eastmoor Academy in 2003. Upon receiving his bachelor's degree in Communication, it only took him a few years to realize that he was not walking in his purpose. In 2014, after working as a Pre-Kindergarten instructional assistant and library aide, Mr. Carey enrolled back in college to obtain his teaching license to pursue his goal as an Early Childhood Educator. During the pandemic, Mr. Carey, an admitted perfectionist, began trying to find other ways to make sure his scholars were learning. He created a YouTube channel for those students who may not have had access to a computer but had access to a tablet or phone. He also began completing the final touches to his book Alliteration Boosts Communication: The ABCs of Vocabulary. After publishing his book, Mr. Carey created companion activities that align to the National Standards for fellow educators that range from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. Bringing Special Needs Professionals Together - Season 3, Episode 18When he started his teaching career in a pre-K classroom, Columbus Education Association member Larry Carey started a mission to introduce robust vocabulary to his young students who otherwise would likely not have access to rich language opportunities. Although his job title has changed, that work continues with Carey's new children's book, which he is sharing as part of OEA-Retired's Read Across America campaign this year. Carey shares his journey, including why he got involved in OEA-R years before he plans to retire himself. This book was two years in the making. He got the idea to write the book from one of the Step-Up observers, who was impressed by his scholars knowing the words elated and melancholy. These words along with a plethora of other high-level vocabulary were what he frequently used in the classroom. There, he began writing down alliterations for every letter. He made sure to use vocabulary words that scholars would not regularly hear in their daily communication. To assist with comprehension of the vocabulary, he also includes the meanings of each word with a well-conceived illustration that helps to explain the meaning. After publishing his book, Mr. Carey created companion activities that align to the National Standards for fellow educators that range from Pre-Kindergarten to 8th grade. A vast number of the activities focus on letter recognition, sounds, colors, identifying what is occurring in the illustrations, and of course, vocabulary! For the higher grade levels, vocabulary and creating their own alliteration is key to mastery. These activities along with the book can be found on his website: www.larrycareyltd.com. We are delighted today to be joined by Dr. Dale Farran and to discuss the results from a recent study of hers and colleagues, which has followed for over a decade 2,990 low-income children in Tennessee who applied to free, public prekindergarten programs. Some of the children were admitted by lottery, and the others were not, creating a “real world” randomized, controlled trial, which is the gold standard in science to show causality. Recent results show that children enrolled in the public pre-k were scoring lower than their peers in the control group on state tests of Math, English and Science in sixth grade. Furthermore, at sixth grade, they were more likely to have experienced an expulsion or suspension than their peers not enrolled in a public pre-k. But as we discuss there is much nuance and complexity to this research that must be considered when considering the results and how they can inform policy and practice. Dr. Dale Farran is an Emerita Professor at Peabody College at Vanderbilt University. Dr. Farran has been involved in research and intervention for high-risk children and youth for all of her professional career. She has conducted research at the Frank Porter Graham Child Development Center in Chapel Hill, N.C., and the Kamehameha Schools Early Education Project in Hawaii. Dr. Farran is the editor of two books dealing with risk and poverty, the author of more than 90 journal articles and book chapters, and a regular presenter at national conferences. Her recent research emphasis is on evaluating the effectiveness of alternative preschool curricula for preparing children from low-income families to transition successfully to school and longitudinal follow up for long term effects. Currently she is directing an evaluation of the State of Tennessee's prekindergarten program. Most recently, she has been involved in identifying early childhood classroom practices most facilitative of children's outcomes, including coaching tools to improve practice.
