Today on the China Compass Podcast I talk to my good friend Denny (aka, William Ekvall Simpson) the day before his sentencing in federal court for singing and praying in front of a Nashville abortion clinic. We spend most of our time discussing our evangelistic adventures in China (See @chinaadventures on X/Insta for daily China prayer updates), including stories of being chased in the middle of the night with his teenage son and multiple arrests by the Commies (with his teenage daughters). We also discuss Denny's favorite Chinese place (Summer River, Gansu) and missionary martyr (William Ekvall Simpson) who loaned Denny his name for a season so he could get back into China. Visit PrayforChina.us to learn how to pray more strategically for all of China. We finish with talking about how you can pray for Denny and the 10 who will be sentenced. I will post an update here on July 3rd with the results of the actual sentencing. How does China see the world? What do we get wrong when talking about China? What are the central diving forces in Chinese politics? And what “does China want?”  While concrete answers to such complex social and political questions are illusive, grappling with them is essential if we want to find a peaceful way through what is becoming an increasingly dangerous period in US-China relations. Does China see itself as a great power?

In July the Chinese Communist Party turns 100. From humble beginnings in a small building in Shanghai's French Concession, the party would go on to seize power, retaining it into the present day, and fundamentally alter the course of China's history. A century ago, the CCP's founders would probably not have been able to imagine the influence they would wield and the modern country their party would forge, even if they might have hoped for it.  China in 1921 was fracturing, impoverished, and often found itself at the mercy of the era's great powers. But today's China is a global economic behemoth; and its international political influence is inexorably on the rise too, seen in its growing power in multilateral institutions like the UN. Many would argue that it's seen by the world's leading superpower, the United States, as its main rival. But is China what we might call a great power? And crucially - whilst we certainly know a lot about what everyone else thinks about this - how does China perceive itself?  To answer these very big questions, we've assembled some of the biggest brains in the field. The incomparable Rana Mitter, Professor of the History and Politics of Modern China at the University of Oxford, is our guest host for this episode. He's joined by Professor Shaun Breslin of the University of Warwick and Suyan Pan, Associate Professor at the Education University of Hong Kong. As ever - you can find out more on our website, www.asiamatterspod.com

Tell us a bit about yourself and your photography. From Bosnia, Sarajevo. Lives in the Chicago area. Briefly describe two or three locations you recently traveled too. I travel for work. So I get to go to lots of places that most wouldn’t be able to see. Both in the US and internationally. Various suppliers, such as in China. Virginia as well. Went to S. Dakota last year. Did some photography in the Black Hills area. And an old ghost town. China: Shanghai, a recent favorite was in the bundt area of Shanghai. Was raining, lots of great reflections. http://www.stevantontich.com/blog/2018/5/23/china-in-spring-2018 Rolliflex camera shooting. The Korean War ended six decades ago, but so far hopes for reform and liberalization in North Korea have been frustrated. On the 60th anniversary of the signing of the armistice, South Korea’s ambassador to the U.S. will address the future of the U.S.-South Korean alliance, which also turns 60 this year. Two Korea experts will follow with commentary on relations between Washington and Seoul, as well as appropriate policy towards Pyongyang. Should America pursue more intense involvement or turn the North Korean “problem” over to its neighbors, including China? See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.
