By 1986, Ozzy Osbourne already had the reputation as the Mad Man of Metal. Since his departure from Black Sabbath, he'd created a whole new act that was very successful thanks to his wife and manager Sharon (Arden) Osbourne and the talented musicians she got to play & record with him. After a string of multi-platinum solo records in the US, you'd figure that Ozzy was on top of the world and ready to continue to dazzle audiences around the world. However, things weren't so rosey in Ozzy's den. Sharon made him go to rehab and Betty Ford which may helped him slow down but didn't stop his use of drugs and alcohol. A reunion with Black Sabbath at Live Aid put his next solo writing sessions on hold and he end up losing his rhythm section, including long-time bassist Bob Daisley. Guitarist Jake E Lee who blew fans away with his performance on Bark at the Moon was upset about not receiving writing credits (or royalties) from that record and refused to proceed until his contract was worked out to his liking. Despite all that, The Ultimate Sin is still a classic Ozzy album. From the title track to the finale in Shot in the Dark, there are amazing metal moments with brilliant guitar pyrotechics from Jake. The title track, Thank God for the Bomb and Killer of Giants all refer to the ongoing Cold War that kept people living in fear. LIghtning Strikes and Shot in the Dark received steady rotation on MTV and eventually The Ultimate Sin went double platinum. Unfortunately, Ozzy wasn't happy with the mix by producer Ron Nevison so this album is now out of print and Shot in the Dark is not included on any of Ozzy's greatest hits albums. While controversy and infighting may have followed Ozzy around, his status as a bonafide Metal God is never in question on this album and we think Jake E Lee deserves more credit as a guitarist and songwriter than he receives. Nevertheless, The Ultimate Sin may not be his best solo record but we count it among his classics of the 1980s. Ozzy Osbournen ja Ronnie James Dion laulettua Black Sabbathin keulahahmoina, 1980-luvun alussa bändille koitti vaikea aikakausi. Sitä kutsutaan nimellä ”Lost Years”, hämärät vuodet. Laulajina nähtiin ja kuultiin monien käänteiden jälkeen Deep Purplesta tutut Ian Gillan ja Glenn Hughes, sekä aiemmin tuntematon Tony Martin. Legendary bassist and songwriter Bob Daisley joins the Loaded Radio Podcast this week, addressing his exclusion from Ozzy Osbourne's "Back To The Beginning" concert and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction, reflecting on his work with Randy Rhoads, Jake E. Lee, and Zakk Wylde, and discussing new music. The episode also features host Scott Penfold breaking down the latest heavy metal news, including the new Bruce Dickinson solo album, Deftones' catalog deal, the Motley Crue/Mick Mars verdict, and the Grammys' ongoing relationship with metal. I've interviewed a lot of metal musicians over the years, but some conversations carry a different kind of weight. This one does. This week on the Loaded Radio Podcast, we're joined by Bob Daisley — a foundational architect of heavy metal whose fingerprints are all over some of the genre's most iconic records, yet whose name is still too often left out of the mainstream narrative. And for the first time in a long while, Bob isn't dodging the uncomfortable stuff.

- Accept-nummeret “Fast as a Shark” sætter nye standarder for speedet metal, og tænder ild i brødrene Stützer i bandet Devils Symphony. - Lars Ulrich og James Hetfield har rekrutteret et par nye medlemmer til Metallica, Cliff Burton og Dave Mustaine, og skaber stor opmærksomhed med demoen “No Life ‘Til Leather”. - Iron Maiden udgiver deres første album med Bruce Dickinson, ”The Number of the Beast”, der går rent ind hos metalfolket.

This week, we're discussing bands that feature rock stars: Supergroups and Offshoots. We once again discuss how a band consisting of well-known artists from other bands does not always equal great success. Join us as we delve into some of the lesser-known supergroups and offshoots that didn't achieve huge mainstream success or lasted for very long. What is it we do here at InObscuria? Every show, Kevin opens the crypt to exhume and dissect from his personal collection: an artist, album, or collection of tunes from the broad spectrum of rock, punk, and metal. This week we talk exclusively about Supergroups featuring famous solo artists and band members, along with Offshoots, which are bands that contain the bulk of a previous incarnation of a famous band. Ozzy Osbourne, the self-proclaimed "Prince of Darkness"—a title he certainly lived up to—co-founded Black Sabbath in 1968, a band whose groundbreaking sound shattered expectations entirely. As their frontman, Ozzy's distinctive vocals and mesmerizing stage antics propelled them to superstardom throughout the 1970s. Imagine the landscape of music without anthems like "Paranoid" or "Iron Man"; their creation rests squarely on the shoulders of these sonic pioneers!Ozzy's contributions to Black Sabbath are the stuff of legend. He became the iconic face and unmistakable voice behind their initial eight albums, a discography that defined an entire genre. Beginning with their eponymous debut in 1970 and culminating in "Never Say Die!" in 1978, each record unleashed the band's brooding, monumental sound and Ozzy's, shall we say, characteristically eccentric vocal delivery. "Paranoid" and "Master of Reality" stand as undisputed masterpieces, essential listening for any self-respecting metal aficionado.Regrettably, the perils of the rock 'n' roll lifestyle exacted their price. In 1979, Ozzy's struggles with substance use culminated in his departure from Black Sabbath. However, this setback proved a launchpad, catapulting him toward an immensely successful solo career and reaffirming that the "Prince of Darkness" was far from dethroned!Ozzy Osbourne's 1980s solo endeavor proved extraordinary. With the collaborative genius of Randy Rhoads and Bob Daisley, he unleashed Blizzard of Ozz (1980) and Diary of a Madman (1981) upon the masses. These albums did not simply resonate; they instigated a seismic shift within the hard rock sphere, plotting a trajectory for a decade brimming with unparalleled musical audacity.Naturally, the Ozzy experience was never without its share of uproar. His on and off-stage actions fueled constant public conversation, even sparking disapproval from the Christian right, who claimed promotion of Satanic ideals. Yet, every bit of attention helped, it seemed. Amidst the controversy, Ozzy released thirteen solo studio albums, with the initial seven reaching multi-platinum certification in the United States; an achievement that reflects remarkable sales. The "Back to the Beginning" farewell concert in Birmingham on July 5, 2025, was an emotional tidal wave for Ozzy Osbourne and his fans. He announced his retirement, citing health concerns, and the performance felt like a joyous celebration of his legendary career, rather than a somber farewell. That "Back to the Beginning" aptly encapsulated his swan song resonated deeply, echoing his formative years in Birmingham. The news of his death a mere 17 days later, on July 22, reverberated like a thunderclap. While plans for future recordings existed, fate intervened. It's devastating that such a prodigious talent was cut short so abruptly, yet what a legacy he forged!Ozzy's seismic impact on music is undeniable, and his innovative spirit will perpetually galvanize future musicians. Though his earthly performance has concluded, his music endures. I'm just so grateful I got to witness such genius.Flamekeeper Podcast Network: http://www.youtube.com@flamekeeperpnAll Rights Reserved. This week's quiz: On 5 July, I asked you a question about an article written by RFI English journalist Amanda Morrow: “Ocean campaigners hail French move to snuff out cigarette butt pollution”. In her article, we learned that cigarette ends, or butts, are filled with microplastics and that when they break apart, they leach chemicals into soil and water. France has banned smoking on beaches, in public parks, and at bus stops, as well as near schools, libraries, swimming pools, and sports grounds. You were to re-read Amanda's article and send in the answer to this question: How many liters of water can a single cigarette butt contaminate? The answer is, to quote Amanda's article: “According to the French Ministry of Ecological Transition, a single cigarette butt can contaminate up to 500 liters of water.” In addition to the quiz question, there was the bonus question, suggested by long-time RFI Listeners Club member Nasyr Muhammad from Katsina State, Nigeria: “What is your favorite prize you've received from RFI, and why?” Do you have a bonus question idea? The haunting final notes of "Diary of a Madman" still echo through metal history four decades after its release. Ozzy Osbourne's second solo album wasn't just eight tracks of heavy metal – it was a musical testament that would forever be shadowed by tragedy. We dive deep into this 1981 masterpiece that captured lightning in a bottle: the supernatural collaboration between Ozzy and guitar prodigy Randy Rhoads. The album stands as both triumphant achievement and poignant farewell, with Rhoads' death in a plane crash just months after its release leaving fans forever wondering what might have been. His classical-influenced solos on tracks like "Flying High Again" and "Over the Mountain" revolutionized metal guitar playing, setting standards guitarists still aspire to today.Beyond the radio hits lies a treasure trove of overlooked gems. The orchestral complexity of the title track reveals Ozzy's artistic ambitions extending far beyond his shock-rock persona. "Little Dolls" transforms from gritty rocker to something more melodically complex. "Tonight" showcases Randy's versatility with one of his most expansive solos – a bittersweet reminder of a talent taken too soon. The album's creation wasn't without drama – bassist Bob Daisley and drummer Lee Kerslake's contributions were later erased from reissues amid royalty disputes. Meanwhile, Sharon Osbourne was beginning to take control of Ozzy's career, a partnership that would reshape metal's commercial landscape for decades.Whether you're a lifelong metalhead or discovering Ozzy beyond "Crazy Train," join us for an album that balances technical brilliance with raw emotion, inspired by horror films and exploring the nature of madness itself. Bob Daisley: The Unsung Hero of Rock and Roll For over five decades, bassist and songwriter Bob Daisley has been the powerhouse behind some of rock's most iconic recordings. From thunderous metal anthems to soulful blues and progressive ballads, Daisley's versatility and talent have made him a cornerstone in music history—working alongside legendary artists across the globe. Early Years: From Australia to the World Stage Born in Australia, Daisley moved to London at 21, chasing a future in music. On his 22nd birthday in 1972, he joined Stan Webb's band Chicken Shack. Just a year later, he signed on with Mungo Jerry, recording the hit single “Alright, Alright, Alright” and embarking on extensive international tours. Breaking Through: Widowmaker and Rainbow In 1974, Daisley rejoined Chicken Shack, but his creative ambitions led to co-founding Widowmaker in 1975. The band released two albums: Widowmaker (1976) and Too Late to Cry (1977), earning acclaim in the UK rock scene. Later that year, Daisley was tapped by guitar virtuoso Ritchie Blackmore to join Rainbow, alongside vocalist Ronnie James Dio and drummer Cozy Powell—forming what many consider the band's definitive lineup. Their explosive live shows and the album Long Live Rock ‘n' Roll solidified Rainbow's place in rock history. Blizzard of Ozz: Defining a Genre In 1979, Daisley partnered with Ozzy Osbourne and guitarist Randy Rhoads to form the Blizzard of Ozz. Their self-titled debut soared to #7 on the UK charts and went platinum in the U.S. They followed with Diary of a Madman (1981), which also achieved platinum status and further cemented the band's influence on heavy metal. Beyond the Blizzard: A Storied Career After a brief departure, Daisley returned to work with Osbourne on his third solo album. Tragedy struck in 1982 with Rhoads' untimely death, but the band pressed on, recording Bark at the Moon (1983) with new guitarist Jake E. Lee, earning international success. Daisley also joined Uriah Heep during this period and launched a prolific collaboration with guitar legend Gary Moore. He contributed to Victims of the Future and toured globally, later reuniting with Moore for Wild Frontier (1987) and Still Got the Blues (1990)—Moore's most successful album to date. 1990s & Beyond: Writing Hits, Shaping Legends Daisley returned once again to the Osbourne fold, co-writing and performing on No Rest for the Wicked (1988) and the chart-topping No More Tears (1991). That same decade, he formed Mother's Army with Jeff Watson of Night Ranger, releasing several albums showcasing his songwriting depth. Throughout the 2000s, he remained an in-demand collaborator, contributing to projects with Yngwie Malmsteen, Living Loud—a supergroup with Jimmy Barnes, Steve Morse, Don Airey, and Lee Kerslake—and revisiting classic Blizzard of Ozz material. Author and Legacy Builder In 2013, Daisley released his autobiography For Facts Sake, offering fans a behind-the-scenes look at his life in rock. Though he has stepped back from touring, he remains a respected figure in the music industry, continuing to inspire through studio work and guest appearances. A Legacy Etched in Rock History Bob Daisley's basslines have underscored some of the most memorable moments in rock and metal. Whether writing, performing, or mentoring, his passion for music endures. With a legacy spanning continents and genres, Daisley remains a foundational figure in the world of rock and roll. #BobDaisley #RandyRhoads #OzzyOsbourne #JohnnyBeaneTV #RockLegends #BassGuitarIcon Want to create live streams like this? Bob DaisleyDespite repeated efforts to scrub his name from the history books, bassist, composer and lyricist Bob Daisley is universally celebrated (and rightfully so) as a creative force behind some of heavy metal's most defining songs and albums (you've heard of “Crazy Train,” eh?). He joins us to discuss the writing and recording of “Blizzard of Ozz,” “Diary of a Madman,” “Bark at the Moon” and other albums that made Ozzy Osbourne a superstar. We also discuss his theory behind the fatal Randy Rhoads plane crash; the inspiration of Jimi Hendrix; his time in Rainbow and Uriah Heep; his book, “For Facts Sake;” and that time Bon Scott bummed a beer, but left behind some cash like a gentleman. What the Riff?!?

No More Tears, the sixth solo studio album by Ozzy Osbourne, was released at an interesting time in rock music.  Hair metal acts were in decline, and grunge was about to take off.  Nevertheless, Ozzy hit it big with this album, reaching number 7 on the Billboard 200 charts, and providing Osbourne's only solo top 40 hit.  No More Tears is generally considered his best album since his first two solo albums, "Blizzard of Oz," and "Diary of a Madman," both of which featured the late Randy Rhodes on guitar.  The songs on the album are largely written by Ozzy, drummer Randy Castillo, and guitarist Zakk Wylde.  Motorhead bassist and front man Lemmy Kilmister wrote the lyrics to four of the tracks on the album.  Additional musicians for this album were Bob Daisley on bass, and John Sinclair on keyboards.  This would be the last Ozzy album to feature Castillo and Daisley. As became more common in the compact disc era of the 90's, the tracks on this album tend to be longer than the typical single.  None of the tracks clock in at less than 4 minutes, and the longest falls just short of 7 1/2 minutes.  In addition to boasting Osbourne's first top 40 hit, he also received a Grammy for "Best Metal Performance" for the track "I Don't Want to Chane the World" when released on his "Live & Loud" album in 1994.Rob brings us this heavy metal throwback for this week's journey back to the 90's.Mama, I'm Coming HomeThis track peaked at number 28 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it Osbourne's only top 40 solo single.  This power ballad contains lyrics by Lemmy Kilmister, the front man from Motorhead.  The song is about his wife Sharon, who helped turn his life around.DesireA crunchy deep cut talks about going for what you want - not changing over time, seeking the same desire.  Osbourne also makes a reference to "Crazy train," his hit from the early 80's.  "It's the same old desire, nothing's changed, nothing's the same.  Burning like fire, don't you ever take my name in vain."Road to NowhereThe last song on the album is a reflection on life.  Osbourne had gone sober after 20 years of drugs and alcohol, and he looking at how "the road to nowhere leads to me."  "I was looking back on my life and all the things I've done to me." No More TearsThis very dark title track has an epic feel, and despite its length hit number 5 on the US Mainstream Rock Tracks chart, number 71 on the Billboard Hot 100, and number 32 on the UK Singles chart.  The lyrics are told from the perspective of a stalker in a red light district seeking a victim to torture.    ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:Wayne's World by Aerosmith (from the Saturday Night Live skit “Wayne's World”)This skit finds Wayne (Mike Myers) and Garth (Dana Carvey) partying in their basement with the band Aerosmith. STAFF PICKS:Tough It Out by Webb WilderWayne starts out the staff picks with a deep cut.  Webb Wilder was born John Webb McMurry in Mississippi, and carries a high energy combination of rock, psychedelic, blues, and rockabilly genres in this song that encourages the listener to keep fighting for dreams even when the odds seem stacked against their fruition.  Alive by Pearl JamLynch brings us a song which evolved from songwriter and front man Eddie Vedder's original intention.  Vedder reflects on the feelings of a boy discovering that he was a stepchild.  While the lyrics were intended as reflecting the curse of an emotional weight from family history, fans interpreted it as an affirmation of life.I Can't Make You Love Me by Bonnie RaittBruce takes the energy way down with this soft hit off Raitt's eleventh studio album, "Luck of the Draw."  Bruce Hornsby provides the piano accompaniment.  Nashville writers Mike Reid and Allen Shamblin wrote the song after hearing about a drunk man being sentenced for shooting at his girlfriend's car.  When asked if he had learned anything, he said, "I learned, Your Honor, that you can't make a woman love you if she don't."Anybody Listening? by Queensryche Rob finishes the staff picks with a "prog metal" song off the "Empire" album that questions whether we really are communicating with people, and wondering if we are understood whether by word or deed.  It was an epic with multiple tempos, dynamics, and key changes that finished off the album. INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:Masquerade by YesWe close out with a surprisingly short song by the prog rock virtuosos off their "Union" album. Returning with Ozzy was the young guitar God, Randy Rhoads, Bob Daisley on bass and Lee Kerslake on drums. This lineup will only have two albums under their belt, but perhaps the two greatest hard rock albums back to back. Diary Of A Madman may have topped his debut album. Randy Rhoads groundbreaking guitar playing went to an even higher level. Bob Daisley's bass playing and incredible lyrics added to the growing mystique and image of Ozzy Osbourne. Lee Kerslake's drumming excellence is on full display on the beginning of the opening track, "Over The Mountain." Ozzy's vocals and delivery is at its peak throughout this album. His underrated and underappreciated singing was some of his best work ever. The album was one again produced by Max Norman, but along with Ozzy Osbourne, Randy Rhoads and Bob Daisley. The album went 3X platinum in the United States and made it to #16 on the US Billboard 200. It produced some of classic rock's greatest hits including "Flying High Again." The album is sadly the last album by this incredible unit and obviously Randy Rhoads last album ever. He passed away in a terrible plane crash during the Diary Of A Madman tour. A tragedy that robbed the world of one of the greatest guitar hero and by ALL accounts a beautiful human being. As usual the boys breakdown and dissect the tracks and rank the songs. Aldridge departed after the recording of the album and was briefly replaced by Carmine Appice, but returned mid-tour after Appice was removed by the Osbournes. Nonetheless, Appice did appear in the popular music video for the "Bark at the Moon" single.Order Bark At The Moon on Vinylhttps://amzn.to/3RTBp11Order Beck  Bogart and Appice➜ https://amzn.to/3tvQZ9MOrdet Bob Daisley's Autobiography➜ https://amzn.to/485UeUkSupport the show

As Ozzy Osbourne's 3rd solo album Bark at the Moon turns 40, we look back on what was a very pivotal time in the life of Ozzy and his wife/manager Sharon. After the tragic death of Randy Rhoads, they soldiered on with Brad Gillis (Night Ranger) and bought some time with the live Speak of the Devil album. But Ozzy needed not only a new gunslinger to replace Rhoads virtuosity, he also needed a new writing partner. Enter Jake E. Lee from Mickey Ratt (which would evolve into Ratt) who could write songs and deliver blistering solos. And MTV was eagerly awaiting the first videos from the former Black Sabbath madman. On the home front, Ozzy is battling substance abuse, Sharon is at odds with her father/super-manager Don Arden, their is infidelity and while they have legal problems and bad press, they start having kids. Plus the band seems to always be in flux as Rudy Sarzo (Quiet Riot) has left to be replaced by Bob Daisley who had written and recorded on the first two Ozzy solo albums. And while Tommy Aldridge plays on the album, Carmine Appice appears in the Bark at the Moon video. While some of the songs like the title track and Rock N Roll Rebel would be hailed as classic Ozzy, the 2nd UK single So Tired is an interesting choice for a heavy metal singer but the video is classic MTV and classic Ozzy. Released November 15, 1983 in the US and December 2, 1983 in the UK, we celebrate its 40th by going track x track, video x video and offstage drama from this triple platinum seller.
