Interview by Kris PetersIt's hard to imagine that a band in its 35th year have never toured Australia. Especially when that band is in the ilk of legendary rockers Slaughter! But that's precisely the case, with forces conspiring against the band over three and a half decades to keep them out of earshot. But all that changes this weekend when Slaughter touch down in this country as part of Glamfest 2024, which also features Janet Gardner, H.E.A.T, Lynch Mob, Jetboy and more for two showcase events in Melbourne and Sydney (Brisbane was omitted from the schedule due to reasons explained on Silverback Touring's Facebook page).HEAVY recently had the pleasure of catching up with guitarist Jeff Blando to find out, among other things, why Slaughter have never made it to this part of the world."For myself, my wife has always been 'where do you wanna go on vacation' and I have always wanted to go to Australia," he smiled. "So I, myself, am super stoked about coming, and I know the rest of the guys are stoked as well. The band is playing all the hits from the first two records. We are doing one cover song, which is a Led Zeppelin tune that we put in the set, and we're just looking forward to coming over there. The band, considering our age, we still are moving pretty well and functioning pretty well. There's still a lot of energy there and everyone's gonna dig it - hopefully. It could be 'look at those bunch of old farts up there jumping around like morons' (laughs)."In the full interview, Jeff talks more about coming out for the first time, whether the band will ask other musicians what to expect, what we can expect from the shows, what Slaughter expect from their crowds, the family vibe back stage at festivals like this, the Australian bands on the bill and if he researches them to know what to expect, the legacy of Slaughter, upcoming new music and more.
Interview by Kris PetersJanet Gardner is a name most hard rockers and metallers have etched into their black hearts.Since fronting legendary outfit Vixen, Gardner has epitomised the spirit of metal with her distinctive vocals, influencing generation after generation of music listeners and performers while always maintaining an approachable and down to Earth attitude.Since going solo in more recent years - with guitarist and husband Justin James - Gardner has revitalised both her music and her brand, touring constantly and continuing to churn out high-quality albums.Gardner is just one of a host of international acts such as Slaughter, Lynch Mob, The Cruel Intentions, H.E.A.T and Jetboy who are descending on Melbourne and Sydney this weekend as part of Glamfest 2024.HEAVY caught up with Janet and Justin to find out more, and we start by pointing out there is well over 100 years of experience in just the headliners alone."Wow," James exclaimed. "That's crazy when you look at it that way. But what's so cool is, it's bands from the day that we all loved - and still love - and then there's some new acts that are part of this bill that are great, and I'm excited to see. Like H.E.A.T and The Cruel Intentions that we don't get to see here in the States.""This is a good opportunity to see them," Gardner added. We ask what it is both of them like most about playing festivals such as Glamfest. Is it the music or catching up with old friends or the atmosphere?"All of the above," Gardner and James replied in unison."You just nailed it," Gardner said."A lot of these bands are friends, so it's great to see them," James continued. "Obviously playing on stage and playing music and seeing the fans and friends and crowd… the whole thing is almost overwhelming. We are so excited about this.""And there is a sense of community with our genre of music now," Gardner took over, "that didn't exist back when we were all at the height of our popularity. Other than the bands you're touring with at the moment… like, I didn't get a chance to see a lot of those bands because we were always touring. This is such great opportunities to see other bands and share a stage with them. It's an honour and it's amazing."In the full interview Janet and James talk more about Glamfest and what to expect, what bands playing they may not have played with before, how the band has changed since their last visit in 2020, the other members of the band, the Australian bands and which ones they are familiar with, their recent album No Strings and how it was received, if they are still getting new fans or if their core base is existing listeners, future plans and more.
This week is all about bands playing other bands' songs… classic songs that perhaps radio has exhausted… Whether they are playing it straight note-for-note, or whether they are re-interpreting it; bands love to pay tribute to great songs that they love! In this episode, we showcase the diversity of how a band can take a classic rock hit that you've heard a million times and heavy it up.What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Season 6 Episode 15 aired live at 19h00 on Rebel Rock Radio on 13 April 2023. The show kicked off with Ozzy Osbourne's 'Miracle Man' and then blasted through some fast-paced hi-octane rock/metal. There were some excellent new tracks on the show; Buckcherry with ‘Let's Get Wild' off the soon-to-be-released Volume 10, Greta Van Fleet with 'Meet The Master', and Ian Hunter with Stone Temple Pilots' Eric Kretz, and the De Leo Brothers, and a track called Pavlov's Dog. The Immortals track this week was ‘Cold Gin' off KISS – Alive. It is KISS at their best and shows just how important Peter Criss and Ace Frehley were to the sound of the band. The 5 min interview with Jessy Switchblade of Deadline fame clocked in at about 8 min, Jessy is very easy to talk to and as always has plenty to say. This week's Ultimate Challenge looked at 1985 and the four albums were: ZZ Top – Afterburner, ACDC – Fly On The Wall, John Mellencamp – Scarecrow, and Megadeth – Killing Is My Business......And Business Is Good! In between we heard from the likes of Doomsday Outlaw, Jetboy, Tesla, The Black Crowes, Iron Maiden, Saxon, and Judas Priest. Artists featured: Ozzy Osbourne, Disturbed, Godsmack, Saxon, Coverdale / Page, Buckcherry, Danko Jones, Airbourne, Drowning Pool, Halestorm, The Donnas, Doomsday Outlaw, Whisky Myers, Greta Van Fleet, Judas Priest, Iron Maiden, Mötley Crüe, The Black Crowes, Tesla, Audioslave, Alice In Chains, Ian Hunter, The Rolling Stones, Anthrax, Jetboy, KISS, Deadline, ACDC, ZZ Top, John Mellencamp, Megadeth, Arch Enemy, Bullet For My Valentine, Kid Rock, The Halo Effect, Parkway Drive. Mickey Finn of Jetboy talks about his ROCK SCENE.
S5E16 aired on 21 Apr 2022 on Rebel Rock Radio. Load shedding had been suspended so the amount of distraction and chaos was reduced significantly from last week. We kicked off with a track titled 'Washed Away' by Craig Goldie, and Vinnie Appice of Dio fame's outfit Resurrection Kings. Sadly we are currently experiencing a lot of Natal being washed away so it's relevant to our troubled times. Next up, some Deep Purple, a track called Spanish Archers off their 1987 effort titled House of Blue Light. This features the classic Mark II line-up and the album has been overlooked by many. The next hour was full of typical TSORR rock and metal, we got fluffy with The Eagles, sleazy with Mötley Crüe, heavy with Pantera, and energized by Chickenfoot. As mentioned before Joe Satriani in Chickenfoot is simply amazing. We checked out 'My Name is Allen' off Stone Sour's House of Gold & Bones to mark the fact that Stone Sour will be featured on the next Rock Review and then we had a track off Troublegum, that magnificent ball of venom released in 1994. We did a little feature based on the Phil Wright tapes, I am working through old cassettes of Phil's shows and featured two of the tracks I dug up, 'Love is a Killer' by Vixen, and A cover of The Small Faces classic 'All Or Nothing' by Tygers of Pan Tang. We checked out the new Red Hot Chili Peppers and gave thanks for the return of John Frusciante. No disrespect to Josh Klinghoffer, it's just that John is part of the genetic structure of all the things I do like about RHCP. As usual in the last hour, we get a bit more off the beaten track and check out rare and amazing stuff Like Roger Kaye's home recording of 'Lucifer Lives in the Whitehouse' and a track off Deangersmith's latest EP Vocabular Vacation. the track was called 'Escape From Johannesburg' and that is indeed a worthy goal. For the rest, we had some classic Iron Maiden, Avenged Sevenfold, and Sepultura. We took a quick look at Rick Rubin's work with ZZ Top and Johnny Cash, check out his podcast with Lex Fridman for context. Hope you enjoy it and spread it the TSORR word. Cheers m/ Artists featured: Resurrection Kings, Deep Purple, Jetboy, The Eagles, Mötley Crüe, Hell Yeah, Pantera, Megadeth, The Dust Coda, Beastie Boys, Chickenfoot, Stone Sour, Therapy?, Avenged Sevenfold, Iron Maiden, My Chemical Romance, Nickelback, Richard Thompson, Anti-Flag, Scorpions, Tygers of Pan Tang, Vixen, Sham 69, Stiff Little Fingers, Roger Kaye, Deangersmith, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Sepultura, Tyler Bryant & The Shakedown, Thin Lizzy, Manowar, Man As Machine, Neil Young & Crazy Horse, The Uninvited, The Doors, ZZ Top, Johnny Cash, Francois Van Coke, Kid Rock, Volbeat.
Buckcherry's Billy Rowe is the guest on today's podcast. In addition to his recent work in Buckcherry, Billy played rhythm and slide guitar in Jetboy, one of the pioneer acts of the incredible scene that spawned Guns N'Roses and Poison. Bad timing and plain bad luck meant that despite major label albums, Jetboy never scaled the heights of their peers. But stadium rock's loss is the guitar player's gain. After decades as a touring musician and tech, Billy Rowe had shredded guitars and rebuilt them over and over. Recognizing that he had plenty to offer the world of guitar making, Billy launched Rock N Roll Relics in 2005, driven by a passion to hand-build nothing less than all-round amazing guitars. His guitars are seen around the necks of Green Day's Billy Joe Armstrong, Gilby Clarke (Guns N Roses), Rick Nielsen (Cheap Trick), and Bruce Kulick, just to name a few.Check out Buckcherry on Tour next year in 2022: https://buckcherry.com/tour/Rock N Roll Relics Guitars: http://www.rocknrollrelics.net/Don't forget to take your good time with you!
Billy Rowe He was on the cusp of superstardom in the mid-1980s when his band, Jetboy, rivaled Guns N' Roses and Poison as The Next Big Thing. When tragedy and record biz politics grounded Jetboy, he picked up the pieces, formed new bands and launched a successful guitar business that counts Paul Stanley, Billie Joe Armstrong and Keith Urban among its customers. Today, he plays guitar for Buckcherry and joins us from a tour stop in Canada to discuss all things Billy Rowe and beyond. Created and Produced by Jared Tuten
Producer Ric Browde discusses his work with Poison, Ted Nugent, Jetboy and more. Episode 19 of Season 4 aired on Rebel Rock Radio at 19h00 on 13 May 2021. Kicking off with Boston is always an excellent idea, there is something about that debut album that just makes everything alright. We took a listen to track No 2 'Peace of Mind'. next up was Jetboy and then we had a reminder of just how great Metallica are with their cover of Budgie's 1973 classic 'Breadfan'. The highlight of the show was giving airtime to the brand new track from KK Downing. As you should know KK left Judas Priest many years ago but seemed to have sore balls about not being invited back. He has now started KK's Priest and pulled in ex-Priest frontman Tim 'Ripper' Owens. To be honest, it is a genius move, Ripper is one of the only guys who could pull this off. The thing here is that KK will get a ton of hate because it is totally a Priest rip off and people will say he is ripping off something that he actually started and was a huge part of for 41 years. Here is my take, listen to the track 'Hellfire Thunderbolt' and just rejoice that we have a new source of the music we love. There can never be too many bands in the world making this style of music in my view. We followed up with the mighty Judas Priest just to calibrate the world. KK has done a great thing but it is not Judas Priest. Other than that we discussed the passing of Tawny Kitaen and did a little tribute to the girl that helped Whitesnake become MTV megastars and wrecked David Coverdale's life :-). Van Halen's 'Drop Dead Legs' was a part of that tribute. We heard a bit more from Gojira, the new album Fortitude, is amazing. Kid Rock always sounds good, his track 'Po-Dunk' hit the spot as did Cold Chisel with 'Flame Trees'. Anyway, check it all out there is plenty to get your teeth into. See ya next week. Artists featured: Boston, Jetboy, Aerosmith, Metallica, Bush, Green Day, Scorpions, Red Dragon Cartel, Leslie West, Jimi Hendrix, Black Star Riders, Black Bone Nation, Type O Negative, The Monks, The Boomtown Rats, Motörhead, Last In Line, KK's priest, Judas Priest, Theory of a Deadman, L.A. Guns, Nirvana, Dogs D'Amour, Ugly Kid Joe, Cold Chisel, The Screaming Jets, Kid Rock, White Zombie, Ruff Majik, Buckcherry, Whitesnake, Van Halen, Gojira, Volbeat, Halestorm, Little Steven, Seasick Steve
Episode 16 of season 4 started a bit differently as I was testing out the auto DJ function and instead of starting up the theme song for TSORR, it played Whitesnake. Normality was resumed quickly and we sped through some Black Sabbath and ACDC. I pointed out that 'Neon Knights' off Sabbath's Heaven and Hell is the song responsible for the world's greatest ever collective sigh. I am still deeply under the spell of the book Nothin' But a Good Time, the story of 80's hair metal so we checked out Girl and L.A. Guns. We took a listen to Bob Dylan's live version of 'All Along The Watchtower' as promised last week. The new stuff included more Smith / Kotzen and Greta Van Fleet off their brand new album The Battle at Garden's Gate. I am raving about the tracks I have heard off the soon-to-be-released Myles Kennedy album, the track we played, 'Get Aong' is superb. Other than that it was pretty much par for the course, The Burning and L.A. Cobra for South Africa, James Reyne, ACDC, and Jet for Aussie, Kreator and In Flames for metal and The Distillers and Stiff Little Fingers for punk. A highlight for me was listening to 'Dreamer Deceiver', Judas Priests' masterpiece off Sad Wings of Destiny, it is a reminder once again of just how good Rob Halford is. Artists featured: Whitesnake, Black Sabbath, ACDC, Ministry, Scorpions, Girl, L.A. Guns, Greta Van Fleet, The Dead Daisies, Skid Row, Bon Jovi, Bob Dylan, Kreator, Gorky Park, Ozzy Osbourne, Stiff Little Fingers, The Distillers, Pink Floyd, Smith / Kotzen, Jet, James Reyne, Myles Kennedy, Twisted Sister, Probot, Dokken, The Burning, L.A. Cobra, Iron Maiden, Guns 'n' Roses, Accept, Jetboy, Great White, Hinder, Judas Priest, Todd La Torre, In Flames, Kiss.

We talk to Mickey Finn - Lead Singer of legendary San Francisco and Sunset Strip Hard Rock band JETBOY! Mickey takes us back to his early discovery of Punk Rock both American and British and his no holds barred approach to simply ignoring any musical trends and just being himself. His outgoing, larger than life persona would find him landing the frontman role which he became known for and Jetboy would explode from the Bay Area and into Sunset Strip history. Along the way Mickey is open and honest about the tragedy surrounding their first bass player Todd Crew and their relationship with Guns n Roses as well as trying hard in coming to terms with the past but continuing to be honest and excited about music and the future of this amazing band.

All Proceeds Go To Jubilee Consortium and Sweet Relief. Video Premieres via BrooklynVegan.Following the release last month of the benefit track "FLATTEN THE CURVE" which features members of Minutemen, Runaways, Redd Kross, and more artists and bands from the punk, indie and hard rock world, the wide array of contributing musicians decided to create a video to accompany the track. Sequestered and observing social distancing guidelines and rules, many of those participating in the track submitted self-shot footage for the fun and arresting video which premiered on BrooklynVegan.“This video is like a bizarre Rock 'n' Roll alternate reality," says songwriter/vocalist/backing vocalist/guitarist Frank Meyer (The Streetwalkin' Cheetahs, Blind House) who wrote the song and directed the video. "Nowhere else would you see members of Minutemen and The Adolescents rockin' next to members KIX and JetBoy. Where else would you see the singer of The Runaways and Josie Cotton alongside members of Fishbone, Screeching Weasel and The Supersuckers? It's like my whole record collection made a record together and then a video... Actually I guess they did!"Set up to create awareness to prevent the spread of COVID-19, "Flatten The Curve" collected seminal and iconic rock, punk and alternative rock luminaries, celebrating the power of a community coming together to stop the pandemic. The song was written over the course of two days and the recording took one week to assemble and coordinate the full cast of characters. “Flatten the Curve” reaped the rewards from the contributions of its wealth of guests, all of whom donated their time and talent while isolated and in quarantine.Benefiting Jubilee Consortium and Sweet Relief Musicians Fund, “Flatten the Curve” will donate 100% of its proceeds equally between the charities. Got to play some classic songs from their two amazing albums from the 70's, then the 2nd half the episode selections from their three reunion albums that I personally feel are can't miss gems. All in all, a collection of 10 songs that just don't get the respect they deserve from a band that is criminally underrated. Hopefully someday they Rock and Roll HOF will come calling, but I'm not holding my breath. Episode Description: Steven Interviews JETBOY guitarist Billy Rowe. We discuss the bands history, Rock and Roll Relic Guitars, and the newest album “Born To Fly”. What’s The Story: Founded in 1983 by guitarists Billy Rowe and Fernie Rod, JETBOY continues to carry their style of Rock N’ Roll into the 21st century with the same fury that existed 34 years ago. Long recognized as one of the perfecter of the glam genre, JETBOY was one of a handful of acts that got the attention of music fans and record executives alike. While Hollywood was loaded with musical talent, San Francisco had but one true leader at the time, and that leader was JETBOY. Now a cross-generational powerhouse, JETBOY is experiencing a resurgence in popularity that can only be attributed to their musical relevance. Rock N’ Roll fans the world over are beginning to revisit the music that helped to shape a generation, and is now becoming the soundtrack for their offspring. Songs like Feel the Shake, Heavy Chevy, Stomp it (Down to the Bricks), and their up rocked up version of Folsom Prison Blues have struck a chord with an increasingly more discerning audience. Celebrating their 25th anniversary In 2008, the founding members of JETBOY (Billy Rowe, Fernie Rod and Mickey Finn) are dedicated to bringing the party atmosphere back to Rock N’ Roll. In June 2017 the band signed a deal with Italian based label Frontiers Records. The band will record a full length album for the first time in over 20 years, Release date scheduled for 2018. - Bio From Jetboy Rocks Website Everyone’s got a Rock N Roll story to tell, so tell us yours @growinuprock.comLike us and leave us a Review on our Face Book page - @growinuprock or Podchaser Follow us on Twitter - @growinuprock because let’s face it I need all the friends I can get!! Jetboy and Guns N' Roses were playing gigs together before each band even officially had their famous names. Jetboy guitarist Billy Rowe was there and is our guest on episode 64... Before Billy, we speak with this episode's co-host, journalist Matt Wake. Brando and Matt discuss the recent comments made by GNR's manager Fernando and their thoughts on the new Adler's Appetite shows. The guys then welcome in Billy Rowe who shared his beginnings in a San Francisco-based rock band in the early 80s and his relationship with Izzy Stradlin and Bill (aka Axl Rose). He then opens up about Todd Crew, his former band mate and friend of GNR, who died in Slash's arms of an OD in 1987. That's where the Jetboy/GNR relationship changed forever. What are his feelings all these years later? Would he want to play a show with GNR again? His answers might surprise you. Billy also tell us about Jetboy's first album in 30 years (!) and what the future might hold. All this and much more! Please follow/subscribe/leave a review!
