Coach Batson shares the "why" behind his decision to make the 2025 season his last, reflecting on nearly 40 years in the profession and his time at Clemson under Coach Bowden and Coach Swinney. He reveals the story behind the iconic "smooth hands" 4th Quarter video speech, discusses the critical summer "Transformation Phase," the philosophy of the "Engine Room," how strength training has changed, and shares memorable stories - from his pro-wrestling fandom to working with hockey great Jerry York and President George W. Bush.

During his college days at Florida State University, Charlie Ward was a two-sport student-athlete. In 1993, the young quarterback won the Heisman Trophy as the country’s best college American football player, and he also starred on the basketball team. During a pregame talk one day, his basketball coach used some foul language as he talked to his players. He noticed that Charlie “wasn’t comfortable,” and said, “Charlie, what’s up?” Ward said, “Coach, you know, Coach Bowden [the football coach] doesn’t use that kind of language, and he gets us to play awfully hard.” Charlie’s Christlike character allowed him to gently speak to his basketball coach about this issue. In fact, the coach told a reporter: “It’s almost as if there was an angel looking at you” when he talked to Charlie. A good reputation and a faithful witness for Christ are hard to maintain. But at the same time, believers in Jesus can grow to be more like Him as He helps and guides us. In Titus 2, younger men, and by extension all believers, are called to “be self-controlled” (v. 6) and to “show integrity, . . . and soundness of speech that cannot be condemned” (vv. 7-8). When we live that way in Christ’s strength, we’ll not only honor Him but also build a good reputation. Then as God provides the wisdom we need, people will have reason to hear what we say.

What comes to mind when you hear the word "catalyst"? A short cut? A dynamic experience? A transformative idea? The ancient roots of this word comes from a verb that means to unloose, to set free. Think of a horse hemmed in a barn stall. A catalyst would be an open door. This week, both of our guests today had dreams involving football. Both, however, had other gifts and talents they would see come to the fore, and realized that the disappointing situations and tough choices that happened to them while on the way to their dreams were catalysts for broader horizons with bigger pastures. Dr. Myron Rolle is a neurosurgeon who has traveled the world; making it a better place using primarily his gifts, as he puts it,  "from the neck up."  By choosing a path toward medicine, Myron's football dreams were cut short, but was able to see the wisdom in having his dream diverted. Inquiros "Inky" Johnson nearly died while playing football, but the spiritual mentoring he received during his years at the University of Tennessee set him on course to be a motivational speaker who uses his platform to travel the world and make it a better place, too.   Links, Products, and Resources Mentioned: Jesus Calling Podcast Jesus Calling Jesus Always Jesus Listens Past interview: Jason Brown Upcoming interview: Jodi Benson   Dr. Myron Rolle The 2% Way Proverbs 29 NIV Habitat for Humanity Princeton University  Senator Bill Bradley Rhodes Scholarship Bobby Bowden Luke 10:20 NIV Florida State  human mesenchymal stem cell research    Inquiros "Inky" Johnson University of Tennessee Fitzgerald Field brachial plexus James Mitchell www.inkyjohnson.com   Interview Quotes: “[Our family] had to stick together. And if we did that, then maybe success would follow.” - Dr. Myron Rolle "I'd be a student first, an athlete second, [but FSU promised] to grow me as a leader, as a Christian, as a man, and eventually as a role model." - Dr. Myron Rolle "One thing that Coach Bowden said was that he was excited about his players getting into the NFL. But he's more proud and more pressed to see all of his players' names written in the Lamb's Book of Life and joining him in heaven one day." - Dr. Myron Rolle "I knew that football had an expiration date. If I had my way, I would not have had it as early. But again, it worked out how it did. And it is a blessing to be able to be in this field now, waking up every day, doing surgery, helping patients in the hospital, teaching young medical students." - Dr. Myron Rolle “My junior year, the second game, 2006, September 9th, I went to make a routine tackle. It ended my career, and it changed my life forever. I thought I was in a bad dream. I didn't think my career would not only end that day, I didn't think I would be left with a paralyzed right arm and hand, from that day moving forward.” - Inquoris “Inky” Johnson “When I look back on it, God was preparing me all along before [my career ending] injury ever happened.” - Inquoris “Inky” Johnson  “I think one of the common mistakes we make as people is thinking where we meet people is where they've always been.” - Inquoris “Inky” Johnson  “Some of the greatest forms of growth happen in uncertain moments.” - Inquoris “Inky” Johnson  ________________________ Enjoy watching these additional videos from Jesus Calling YouTube channel! 012 MARK RICHT, the Legendary College Football Coach

Dad the Man

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 9, 2021 52:45

Today's guest is none other than Coach Mark Richt, or Poopah, as his grandkids call him. Coach Richt played quarterback at the University of Miami and threw his hat in the ring for the NFL before turning his sights towards coaching college football. The day before leaving to begin his coaching career as a GA down in Baton Rouge, he received a phone call and a job offer from the late Bobby Bowden, which he accepted. Mark refers to this pivotal moment as a "spiritual marker" in his life, as it was Coach Bowden who raised him as a young quarterbacks coach, molder of young men, and most importantly brought him to faith in Jesus Christ. Mark met his wife of 34 years, Katharyn, while he was a GA in Tallahassee and she was a cheerleader. Mark went on to be the OC at East Carolina for one season before returning to Florida State to serve as QB coach for three years and then being promoted to offensive coordinator. In his ten year run at Florida State he coached two Heisman Trophy winning QBs, won seven consecutive ACC titles, and won two national championships. After ten years coaching the Seminoles, Mark took the head coaching job at the University of Georgia where he would lead the program for 15 years, win two SEC championships, and leave as the second winningest coach in program history. After leaving Georgia in 2015, he returned to his alma mater as the head coach of the Miami Hurricanes, where he won ACC Coach of the Year, and stoked a long awaited fire within the Miami program, donating $1 million of his own money to kickoff the fundraising for a $34 million dollar practice facility in Miami. Coach Richt made the call to retire after the 2018 season after suffering a near-fatal heart attack. He now works as an ACC Network college football studio analyst, and this fall he became an author upon the release of his new book "Make the Call," which is equal parts entertaining and insightful and i would recommend it to anyone. This past weekend, the University of Georgia held a half-time ceremony to honor Coach Richt and the legacy he left and the road he paved for future Bulldog success. One thing I appreciate most about Coach Richt is that he is a guy with his priorities in order and never shies away from his faith. Above it all, he is an incredible man, husband, and father and it is an absolute honor to host him on the show. Discussion Points Mark's new book "Make the Call" The book writing process The impact that Coach Bobby Bowden had on Mark's life Mark's story of coming to faith in Jesus Christ Coach tells the story of "the dog pile" Gratitude and the importance of stopping to appreciate the small wins What his players taught up Discipline is a form of love Coach's approach to work life balance as a college football coach The role his wife played for their family during the coaching years The importance of having one meal with the family each day Marriage advice that has lead to 34 years of happy marriage Mark's adoption story Mark talks about the grandpa life What Coach is the most proud of in his life Coach talks about legacy and what that word means to Him LINKS Make the Call by Mark Richt: https://www.bhpublishinggroup.com/makethecall/

He was a special human being who earned an enduring legacy because of his wonderful heart, faith and values he lived. It was the honor of my lifetime to know him and beyond anything I could dream to have a relationship with him. My thoughts and prayers are with everyone who has been impacted by Coach Bowden and particularly with his wife Ann, their children, grandchildren, former players and coaches. FTGOTG S2, E11 | These self-proclaimed "Seminole brothers for life" epitomize our theme of relationships for Season 2!  This candid interview with former Florida State cornerbacks Bobby Jackson (BoJack) and Bobby Butler demonstrates how strong bonds formed in the locker room and on the field can last a lifetime!Bobby Jackson didn't start playing "organized" football until he got into high school.  His natural talent and help from a high school teammate vaulted him into an opportunity at Florida State...an opportunity he maximized, to say the least.  He was drafted by the New York Jets in the 6th round of the 1978 NFL Draft and started all 16 games of his rookie season!  BoJack was ultimately selected to the "All-Time Jet Team" as one of the top three corners in the history of the New York Jets.  He finished his Jets career with 21 interceptions.  After a brief stay with the Atlanta Falcons and an untimely injury, he retired in 1986.  His stellar career at FSU ('74-'77) earned him induction into the FSU Hall of Fame in 1993.  Bobby Butler chose Florida State based on a single (unofficial) visit and a very impactful conversation with Coach Bobby Bowden.  In his mind, he felt playing at FSU for Coach Bowden was "meant to be."  As it turned out, the example and mentorship shown by BoJack were hugely instrumental in Bobby's long-term success...at FSU and in the NFL.  He was selected by the Atlanta Falcons with the 25th overall pick in the 1st round of the 1981 NFL Draft.  Bobby played his entire 12-year career with the Falcons, playing in 169 games during which he accumulated 27 interceptions!  He retired after the 1992 season.Despite being smaller athletes, both men possessed world-class speed and were known for ferocity in their manner of play.  While they were fortunate to play for legendary head coach Bobby Bowden at the beginning of his FSU career, they leveraged the opportunity to achieve success.  Both BoJack and Bobby excelled in the system and culture under Coach Bowden and created their respective niche...each in his own class!Intro music "Next Level" used under license by Composer Rujay Torres.

McKenzie Milton and Jermaine Johnson talk Florida State Seminoles football and Mike Norvell for the first time with FSU media. Milton transcript: “Just seeing the logo kind of speaks for itself. Competing against coach Norvell while he was at Memphis…seeing how he carried himself as a coach.” On injury: “It's something that I reflect on. But at the same time, I am just trying to live in the moment and enjoy this year at FSU. Enjoy this time with new coaches and new teammates, support staff. It has been a lot of fun so far.” Norvell’s offense: “The QB’s have a lot of control over what goes on. We won’t play with as much tempo as I have been accustomed to. I feel like I can get us in the right plays. I am still learning, but I have learned so much in the past 2 weeks.” Being a leader: “You can’t just come in and expect these guys to listen to everything you have to say. You have to show your work effort, coming in early and leaving late, leading by example. You want to lead by action and I just want to put my best foot forward for this team and hopefully, we will have some success in the fall.” On FSU tradition: “Shoot, it is just something that you dream about as a kid playing at a school like this. Coach Bowden, Charlie Ward, Jameis Winston. It speaks for itself. The history behind here is second to none in my opinion.” The recruitment for FSU: “The conversations started soon after I put my name in the portal. I think it only took about a week to decide. This just felt right for me, that’s why I chose Florida State.” On relationship to Norvell “The only time I ever met him was at the AAC media days, going into the 2018 season. I just shook his hand, and we both had respect for each other. I knew what he was about as a coach and his program. He ran a great program at Memphis.” More on Norvell: “When I got hurt, he and his whole team actually signed a ball for me, that was a cool gesture. Coach Norvell is a class act. They were our opponent the next week after I got hurt. At the end of the day, football is one community.” On the other QB’s: “Its been good, they have all been great. Super cool guys. When they are cracking jokes I am cracking jokes too. They are all good kids, really good athletes. I think they all have a lot of potential. I can help them take their game to the next level and they can help me take my game to the next level.” On bringing FSU back: “Absolutely. Kind of similar to UCF. They were kind of in a rough patch [before he got there]. It’s a similar deal here. There is a lot of talent here, great coaching. It's about playing as one unit. All the tools and pieces are here for success. I think we have the right leader in coach Norvell. I have full trust in them and I have full trust in this team. I feel like the better we come together and keep working, the better chance we will have this fall.” “I expect to be fully prepared and to compete in the spring. I am super excited to compete with these guys, the other QB’s. I feel great, I feel ready to go. If we had to play this weekend, I would be ready to go.” --- Send in a voice message: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/message Support this podcast: https://anchor.fm/tomahawknation/support

In this episode of the Life and Football Podcast our speical guest was Cody Fagg. At 6’3″ and 210 pounds, wide receiver De’Cody Fagg had the ability to make the tough grab over the middle, but was also fast enough to make plays after the catch during his time at Florida State. In four years at FSU, Fagg had more than 1,600 yards receiving and seven career touchdowns while helping lead the Seminoles to a pair of bowl victories and the 2005 ACC championship. Growing up about 25 miles away from the campus of Florida State University, Fagg rarely thought about being anything other than a Seminole. A native of Quincy, both of his parents would often don the garnet and gold. “From the time I was a little baby, all I knew was FSU because my dad and my mom were FSU fans,” Fagg said. “With my dad working at the Tallahassee Airport, I got the chance to meet a lot of the guys when I was younger. I was able to meet Charlie Ward live in person. My brothers and I would go to a lot of FSU games.” Fagg grew up watching the great Florida State teams of the 1990s, fueled partially by talented receiving corps that included Tamarick Vanover, Kez McCorvey, E.G. Green and Andre Cooper among others. As a youth, Fagg rarely lined up out wide, but made the switch early in his career at Shanks High School. “Coming up through middle school, I was a quarterback, but by the time I transitioned to high school, I became a wide receiver since my older brother was a receiver,” he said. “He was always talking about Peter Warrick this and Peter Warrick that and once I got the chance to get to see him, there was no one more spectacular than that guy there.” After graduating high school in 2003, Fagg briefly attended Hargrave Military Academy in Virginia before heading to Florida State where he would graduate with a degree in Social Science. Fagg spent his career playing for the legendary Bobby Bowden. “He was a father figure,” Fagg said of his former coach. “He took care of all his players and treated them as his own kids no matter the situation. Spending four years with Coach Bowden taught me to be a productive young man off the field and not just on the field.” Fagg still closely follows his alma mater’s football program, which he grew up watching. Fagg said he tries to attend spring practice and some of the summer camps the school hosts. Fagg said he values the time he spent at Florida State and credits his coaches with helping mold him as a young man. The former receiver said he would recommend the school to any perspective recruits or students. “It was the best four years of my life,” Fagg said. “I think that’s where I matured a lot was off the field dealing with Coach Bowden, Coach Dawsey and Coach Fisher. They’re more like lifetime parents. It was a great experience and I wouldn’t wish anything but the best for any kid who is there now or plans on going there in the future.

FSU's rise to college football prominence in the 80s wouldn't have been possible without quarterbacks whose names still resonate with Nole fans over 40: Rick Stockstill, Kelly Lowrey, Chip Ferguson, Casey Weldon, Peter Tom Willis and Danny McManus — an unbroken line of brothers in arms, one after the other through the decade. But the years haven't dimmed Danny's memories about his time at FSU and playing for Coach Bowden.
