Arab nations slam Netanyahu's comments for Palestinian state on Saudi land "Arab nations have fiercely rejected Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proposal of a Palestinian state on Saudi land. Saudi Arabia slammed the idea as a diversion from Israel's actions in Gaza, while the Arab League called it ""detached from reality."" The Saudi foreign ministry said Netanyahu's statements aim to divert attention from the continuous crimes committed against Palestinians in Gaza. Regional outrage followed, with Jordan, Egypt and the United Arab Emirates denouncing the remarks as violations of international law." No power can force Palestinians out of their homeland: Türkiye "Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan declared that no force can expel Palestinians from their homeland. ""Palestine, including Gaza, the West Bank, and East Jerusalem, belongs to the Palestinians,"" Erdogan said. Speaking in Istanbul before departing for Malaysia, another nation opposing Israeli war in the region, Erdogan dismissed US proposals on Gaza, calling them unworthy of discussion." Dozens killed in terror attack in Mali "At least 25 gold miners were killed, and 13 injured in a brutal terrorist ambush near Mali's Gao region, the army confirmed. The attack targeted a convoy of miners under military escort. In swift retaliation, Malian forces eliminated 19 terrorists. The assault, near Kobe, saw militants fire on fleeing civilians. No group has claimed responsibility, however, Daesh and Al-Qaeda-linked factions operate in the area." Colombia's Petro urges ministers to resign ahead of reshuffle "Colombian President Gustavo Petro has called for the resignation of his entire cabinet ahead of an approaching reshuffle. The decision came after Environment Minister Susana Muhamad's resignation in protest of Petro's appointment of Armando Benedetti, citing concerns. Petro says the changes aim to better fulfill his administration's mandate." US funnelled $472 million for 'state propaganda': WikiLeaks "WikiLeaks has unveiled shocking details in a report, claiming that the US funnelled $472.6 million into Internews Network—a global non-governmental organisation accused of covert censorship and media control. USAspending data shows 87% of the funding —equivalent to $415 million — came from USAID, while the US State Department added $57 million. With ties to Soros and Clinton initiatives, Wikileaks also said Internews trained 9,000 journalists and backed social media censorship. As Trump freezes USAID's budget, critics call it a “state propaganda network.”"

Bruno Nsaka

Can solar water pumps solve water woes for Bundelkhand's farmers?

Bundelkhand region in Central India is infamous for its frequent droughts. The lack of water in the region.Farmers in this region have been either aligning their farming with seasonal rainfall patterns or are dependent on diesel or electricity operated pumps for irrigation. But the erratic rainfall, prolonged droughts and poor electricity supply have disrupted farming practices, making them riskier.  Pumping ground water using solar energy is now seen as the solution to these water woes. The Central government started the Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthaan Mahabhiyan (PM-Kusum) scheme in  2019 to overcome challenges of irrigation supply. Through this scheme the government subsidises these solar pumps for the farmers. However, solar water pumps rely on existing or available groundwater, which is already scarce in the region. In this episode, Suno India's Sneha Richhariya travels in three districts of Bundelkhand to understand if solar water pumps can solve the issue of irrigation for the farmers of this region and figure if it possesses a threat to its groundwater levels.  Note: This report was produced with the support of Internews' Earth Journalism Network. Africa is undergoing a remarkable transformation with an exponential surge in internet connectivity, marking a significant milestone in the continent's technological advancement. However, this commendable progress in bridging the digital divide comes with a stark and concerning juxtaposition – Africa finds itself trailing behind in the crucial realm of cybersecurity. This pressing issue took centre stage at the inaugural Africa Cybersecurity Summit held in Togo's vibrant capital, serving as a clarion call for action. This connectivity boom has brought about an unintended consequence – a glaring vulnerability to cyber threats and attacks. Africa's cybersecurity landscape is characterised by gaps in infrastructure, limited awareness, and a shortage of skilled professionals capable of defending against and mitigating these digital threats. The lack of stringent regulatory frameworks and cybersecurity policies exacerbates the situation, leaving businesses, governments, and individuals exposed to the perils of the digital age. In a recent publication commissioned by the United Nations in partnership with the Alliance for Universal Digital Rights in February 2023 entitled Securing our Human Rights in our Digital World, it notes, “Imagine a future in which all citizens of the digital eco-system, no matter who they are, or where they live, can enjoy equal rights to safety, freedom and dignity. Because the digital environment, like the natural environment, transcends borders.” Sounds really good on paper, but how does this translate into our everyday lives? In our latest Let's Talk Human Rights episode, our host Masechaba Mdaka is joined by Wakesho Kililo, who is the is the Africa Coordinator, Digital Rights, Greater Internet Freedom Project at Internews. She serves as a member of the Law Society of Kenya Public Interest Litigation and Legal Aid committee. Our second host is Helen Nyinakiiza, Helen has been working as the Community Manager - Safe Sisters program at Internews. Safe Sisters trains women human rights defenders to use digital safety in their work and to support their community navigate the challenges of Tech Facilitated Gender-Based Violence. “What if there was a mythical monster that sucked our biodata instead of our blood?” “Can you imagine the CEO's reaction when he realized the whole country's personal data was stolen from his company's databases?” “What if we could send messages back in time and warn ourselves about the dangers of losing our privacy?” These are some of the questions that emerged when we asked teams of fiction writers, activists, lawyers, comic book artists, comedians, audio engineers, and illustrators to think about how we could get more people interested in data privacy and digital rights. Over the past 6 months, Internews' ‘ADAPT' Project, in collaboration with the Heinrich Böll Foundation, Internet Bolivia, Coding Rights, Paradigm Initiative, and Fundación Ciudadanía y Desarrollo have produced a series of speculative audio fictions. These stories are meant to entertain, inspire, amaze, educate, and activate – and we hope that they let listeners experience the urgency of data privacy as a basic civil right. In this introductory episode, we interview key collaborators from Brazil, Ecuador, Nigeria, and Bolivia who contributed to our four creative audio fictions projects. We discuss why we decided to produce audio fictions, and some of the challenges and opportunities around collaborations between activists and creatives. We invite you to listen to the series and enjoy. Projects include: La Culpa Es De Graciela (Graciela is to Blame) is a story written by playwright Sebastián Bravo Montenegro and produced in partnership with Fundación Ciudadanía y Desarrollo in Ecuador. This story follows Graciela on her first day working at a major financial institution as their social media manager. Graciela learns the hard way how important it is that institutions have adequate safeguards for personal data and that the government enforces laws and regulations! The story is inspired by a true story, the 2019 data leak of almost every Ecuadorian citizen's personal data. Você Está Lendo Minha Mente? (Are You Reading My Mind?) is a story co-written by Joana Varon and Lucía Egaña Rojas and produced in partnership with Coding Rights. In this story, Sofia enters a library in Rio de Janeiro looking for an Octavia Butler book but ends up finding a portal to interact with her future self. That is when she is told about the future surveillance capabilities of the Tech Brotherhood and the seeds of resistance that need to be planted. Datachiri 2.0 is a story written by Marianne Díaz Hernández based on the comic book written by Alejandro Barrientos and illustrated by Joaquin Cuevas in collaboration with Internet Bolivia. This story is set in 2040 in La Paz, Bolivia, in a society where the government has largely dissolved, and people rely on devices provided for free by an organization called ‘the Congregation.' There are rumors of a mythological monster that is able to hack the Congregation's networks to feed on biodata. Crime and Prejudice is a series of three radio dramas produced by Paradigm Initiative. The series follows the online controversy when the police arrive at Dr. Ewem's door to arrest her based on information that could only have been obtained from the company Moontech. There is an uproar and backlash on Nigeria twitter. When #boycottmoontech starts to trend, we see how Moontech responds.

Greg interviews James Fahn, the Executive Director of Internews' Earth Journalism Network. Greg begins by opening a discussion about James' book “A Land On Fire,” which was published in 2003, after James worked as the environmental editor at The Nation newspaper in Bangkok in the 1990s. James explains that at The Nation, he wrote extensively about environmental issues in Thailand and Southeast Asia, including doing investigative reporting on corruption and corporate malfeasance that damaged the environment. James even tells a story of how he narrowly avoided interviewing a Burmese strong man who likely would have put James on his hit list. Greg then asks James about how Thailand has changed over time, and whether there is any reason to be optimistic. James notes several things that have gotten better, from public transportation to air pollution to public parks, but then also raises several areas where Thailand still needs a lot of work, such as protection of coral reefs and in the excessive use of plastic. Overall, however, James remains an optimistic, which we are certainly glad to hear at the Bangkok Podcast.  James concludes by making his case that we don't have to choose between a free market that is pro-business and economic growth and a heavily regulated market that protects the environment at the expense of the economy. Experience in the States shows that preserving the environment can actually boost the economy if done right. Is James eligible to run for Thai Prime Minister? The Bangkok Podcast wants to know! Don't forget that Patrons get the ad-free version of the show as well as swag and other perks. Produced by Internews. Data politics have played an immense role in Kenya's tumultuous election history. In part, this is due to the centrality that ethnicity has played in Kenyan politics, and the ways in which data about ethnicity has been used, misused, and manipulated. Kenya is again headed to the polls in August 2022 for the first general election since the Data Protection Act (2019) came into effect. The question in most Kenyans' minds is - will this law protect the integrity of Kenyan elections in this election cycle and moving forward? How can the Office of the Data Protection Commissioner protect against misuse of data in party politics and elections and the downstream effects of this data manipulation on legitimacy, trust in democratic politics, and stability? What can civil society and the general public do to push for the protection of data in electoral processes? Kenyan lawyers, Mugambi Laibuta, Grace Mutungu, Hashim Mude and Tevin Gitonga join us on this episode to talk more about Kenya's history of data's use and misuse in elections and the role of Kenya's new Data Protection Act in the 2022 election. And yes, we'll touch on the boogeyman, Cambridge Analytica!

People from India to Mexico to Ghana use the platform for everything from sharing memes, communicating with family, selling goods and services, mobilizing political actions, and even engaging in remote teaching and learning. When Facebook bought WhatsApp in 2014, Mark Zuckerberg promised users that nothing would change for them or their data. But in 2016, Facebook broke that promise and began sharing WhatsApp user data with Facebook. In January 2021, Facebook announced another change to the WhatsApp privacy policy that forced users to accept the changes, with no opt-out, or lose all functionality. A coalition of advocacy organizations, lawyers, and regulatory bodies across the globe came together to #stopFacebook and #saveWhatsApp for the billions of users that rely on it for work, family, and everything else. Advocates and experts Renata Avila, Mishi Choudhary, and Eduardo Carrillo join the podcast to tell the story of the campaign, its path to victory, and what we can learn from this success for wider global digital rights advocacy.

We know that these days everything is ‘datafied': our shopping habits, our daily commutes, our relationships and interactions- companies and governments alike are collecting servers and servers of information about us- but why should we care about the policy and politics of data governance? What really is ‘data protection'? What is at stake? Who are the players? How can we ensure our data is respected and that the most egregious abuses of our data are protected against? And how do we make these issues, often highly technical and legal, compelling for the average citizen? In this episode of Privacy is Global, Laura Vidal and Laura Schwartz-Henderson dive deep on the history of data protection policymaking and privacy advocacy priorities in countries around the world through conversations with experts and activists from Ghana, Nigeria, Bolivia, Brazil and Kenya. We discuss the importance of cultivating cultures of privacy not just to build the political will to pass comprehensive data protection legislation but also to ensure that these laws are adequately enforced.
