For every Big South Conference trophy that Longwood wins, Troy Austin deserves at least a pat on the back. In his 12 years as athletic director and the first in the Division I era, Austin helped bring Longwood into the Big South and hired coaches that brought conference championships to Farmville. Troy Austin left Longwood and returned to his alma mater at Duke in October of 2018 as the Senior Associate Athletics Director for Internal Affairs. In the season 5 finale episode, I explore Hill's approach to Team Leadership as detailed in chapter 16 from the 9th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I highlight connections to our class' definition of leadership, discuss the importance of a strong culture, provide an overview of the model, and conclude with strengths and criticisms of the model. For the final Living Leadership interview of the year I'm joined by Deb Boughton, the Deputy Athletic Director at Marshall University. Before arriving at Marshall, she had a similar role at Northern Illinois University. Deb is a 1997 Trinity University alumna. While at Trinity she was a standout on the women's soccer team and was in the first class of Trinity Master's of Accounting program. She speaks glowingly about role models and mentors like her head coach Nick Cowell, accounting professor Dr. Petrea Sandlin, and Trinity's longtime Director of Athletics Bob King. Deb firmly believes that nothing gets done if you haven't built strong relationships and emphasizes the difference between management and leadership. Speaking about relationships and the value of intercollegiate athletics, Deb says "A coach connects you to a program, but your teammates keep you there." She highlights that great leaders see no boundaries or limitations, but that they need strong colleagues to help them be aware of the pitfalls or proverbial alligators. I love how she describes what college athletics was for her and what it is for so many others - a place to learn, overcome fears, and develop confidence. During the conversation we discuss fruit salad versus gumbo as metaphors for why diversity matters and her two tenets of leadership: 1) reliability and 2) trust. This is an amazing conversation to conclude season 5 and I hope you enjoy!

Brian Roberts (https://twitter.com/beeberts) interviews Jamie Boggs (https://twitter.com/JamieBoggsJD) about her life and career and how she rose through the ranks to become the Vice President of Athletics at Grand Canyon University. During her first year of law school, she knew she wanted to pursue a career in sports over law and, after graduating from law school at the age of 22, began her career at a sports agency in Washington, DC. She then began her collegiate athletics career by taking a position at Duke University where she worked directly with Coach K and shares some advice she received from him. Jamie then decided to take ten months off from her career to focus on raising her children before getting a call from Georgia State University asking if she would join their athletic department and assist with their transition from FCS to BCS. After a successful transition there, she moved to Phoenix to take the position of Deputy Athletic Director at Grand Canyon University and assist with their transition from NCAA Division II to Division I. Brian previously served as the former General Counsel and Chair of GCU's NCAA Transition Committee and he and Jamie recount their experience working together at GCU. Jamie discusses her appreciation for working at GCU and directly with President Brian Mueller and Senior Advisor Jerry Colangelo. The show closes with a discussion of NCAA athletics generally, including conference realignment and NIL, and Jamie provides advice to anyone interested in having a career in athletics.Links:GCU: www.gcu.eduGCU Athletics: www.gculopes.comThe Attorney Lounge YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@TheAttorneyLounge-fd1lo/featuredThe Attorney Lounge Twitter: https://twitter.com/AttorneyLoungeArray: www.trustarray.comArray's Twitter: https://twitter.com/trustarray Lawyers careers
Host Chris Johnson and guests give a recap of the discussion and decisions made at the October 3-4 NCAA Division I Council. First guest is Lynda Tealer, chair of the DI Council and Deputy Athletic Director at the University of Florida, who provides an overview of the topics the DI Council heard and are acting on. Cody, a recent graduate baseball player at St. Bonaventure University, and Morgyn, a recent graduate softball player at Oklahoma State University, provide the voice of the student-athlete and its impact on the DI Council and legislative process. Welcome to Inside the NCAA: The AMA Experience. This podcast series provides an in-depth conversation on the rules that administer the NCAA, as explained by the subject matter experts that oversee those rules throughout the Association. Host Chris Johnson, associate director of Academic and Membership Affairs, guides these discussions to provide the insight into the how, why and what these topics mean for individuals on college campuses across the country.
A couple of years ago, the NCAA did something CRAZY. After some legal defeats and legislative challenges, the NCAA finally threw up their hands and started allowing college athletes to make some money by using their name, image, or likeness in different marketing activity. What happened next was a veritable explosion of new companies, brands, brokers, collectives and athletes all trying to gain a toehold and this new and potentially lucrative marketplace. It was, many said, the new Wild West of college sports. Well, if there's a sheriff in town trying to bring some order to the chaos of NIL, it might just be Learfield's Executive Vice President Solly Fulp. It's safe to say college sports is woven deeply into Solly's DNA. Before landing at Learfield, he was a D1 wrestler at Oregon and later a Deputy Athletic Director at Cal. And it's those experiences that position him so well to work on both the opportunities and challenges associated with NIL. In this episode, we talk all about those opportunities and challenges, how Learfield is approaching the quickly evolving NIL market, how Colorado head football coach Deion Sanders fits in, and much much more. And, if you stick around long enough, you'll even learn how depriving yourself of water affects your teeth. You wouldn't want to miss that, right? Right…?
Episode 3 begins with my lecture on chapter 3 of the 9th edition of Peter G. Northouse's "Leadership: Theory and Practice." During the segment, I highlight the evolution of skills-based approaches to studying leadership and detail Mumford et al.'s Skills Model of Leadership. In the Living Leadership Interview segment, I had the good fortune to discuss leadership philosophy, the skills great leaders utilize, and the importance of mentors with Trinity alumna, former student, and great friend Aly Lilley. Aly is the Deputy Athletic Director at Centre College (@CentreAthletics) in Danville, Kentucky. Before arriving at Centre, she was Trinity University's Associate Director for Athletic Giving and Engagement, and prior to assuming that role she was a long-time assistant volleyball coach at Trinity. A former All-American student-athlete, Aly highlights that great leaders are empathetic, honest, and deeply passionate about their work. She also details how former professors, part-time job employers, and Julie Jenkins (@TUVolleyballTX's wildly successful coach), helped her recognize the import of mentors to self-development and why trust is THE foundation for developing strong relationships. Listen for how Aly describes emotional intelligence, a collaboration spirit, and a learner's mindset help leaders create dynamic, high-peformaning organizations. Send me your thoughts and let's keep the conversation going on Twitter / X (@TingleJK) or on LinkedIn.

What does athletics teach you? It’s not about you, it’s about the other ten guys on that team, the other four in basketball...it’s about everyone working together for a common purpose, for a common goal, and you shouldn’t care who gets the credit as long as you accomplish that goal. - Col. Bart Weiss Col. Bart Weiss is the Director of Athletic Operations at the Community School of Naples, in Naples, FL. He has a truly impressive background in sport and at the United States Air Force. He recently retired after nearly 30 years of service as a full Colonel, and before retiring from active duty in 2014 to join CSN, Weiss served as the Academy’s Deputy Athletic Director. As Deputy Athletic Director of the USAF Academy he oversaw 27 NCAA Division I sport programs and supervised physical education and fitness programs to over 4,000 USAF Academy cadets. Col. Weiss was born in Muskegon, Michigan but grew up in Naples and graduated from Naples High school in 1982. He is a 1986 graduate of the US Air Force Academy and earned a master's of science from Marymount University in 1998 and graduated from the US Army Carlisle Barracks in 2006 with a master’s in National Security Strategy. As a member of the class of 1986 Col. Weiss was named a conference offensive player of the year, 1985 First-team all-conference, and 1985 runner up for the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award. In 1985, Weiss was the first player in USAFA history to rush and pass for over 1,000 yards in a season and led the 1985 team to a 12-1 overall record and #4 national ranking. He was also recently inducted into the United States Air Force Academy Hall of Fame. In addition to these leadership experiences, during his career in the Air Force he led 480 cadet-candidates through a balanced curriculum of military training, academic education and athletic competition and also led and commanded flying squadrons and multiple operational units worldwide. He served in Washington DC working alongside both military leaders and members of Congress, and is a command pilot with 5,000 flying hours. He served as Vice President Gore’s pilot on Air Force Two, and also spent a year augmenting Air Force One! Kathy and Col. Weiss met up on the road this week and spent time digging into the “secret sauce” for parents of balancing support and humility, teaching excellence, integrity, respect, and instilling discipline in athletes. He delves into the dynamics of when to be a leader and when to fold into an existing entity and work your way up. His wisdom on the importance of failure and seeing the big picture is so helpful, and we believe parents and athletes will gain so much from the wisdom in this episode. Learning from his focus on teachability and cheering on the entire team was such an honor to us, and we hope this episode inspires excellence in you and your athletes this week!
