Let's go for a walk! I've sometimes imagined 3 Books as a long walk with a friend. So today—let's take one! Nickisha moved to Toronto from Jamaica when she was 16 to reunite with her mom and after working as a travel agent she broke out on her own to run a successful business full of fresh air, exercise, community, and lots of love. I sometimes see Nickisha with five, six, or seven dogs around her—giving them the highlight of their day! Tongues wagging. Skip in their step. Motoring around town clocking 100km on foot each week! One of our traditions on 3 Books is doing podcasts outside from Chapter 27 with Robin the Bartender on the open patio of Bar Raval in Toronto to Chapter 106 with Alok Vaid-Menon in Central Park in New York City to Chapter 131 with J. Drew Lanham while birdwatching in South Carolina... Another tradition here is exploring stories from people who fill our lives but aren't often represented by our screen-based culture full of politicians and billionaires. We vote with our attention so it's fun turning off the same faces to hang with people like Vishwas the Uber Driver, Shirley the Nurse, and Soyoung the Variety Store Owner. So strap on your running shoes! Throw in some headphones! And let's go for a walk with Nickisha to discuss urban density, pedestrian-driver relations, safe supply, the dog walking business, immigration assimilation, Danielle Steele, and, of course, Nickisha's 3 most formative books. Let's flip the page to Chapter 147 now...
Living as a trans person in America comes with its share of challenges, which are sometimes even life-threatening. But some say it can also open up access to incredible freedom. What lessons can we all learn from people who've transitioned and transformed? Alok Vaid-Menon is a comedian and writer with remarkable patience and compassion for everyone and their inner journey – even the people sending them hate and death threats. “I am trying to look in their face and say ‘I want you to live,'” they say in a documentary short about them titled “Alok.” Artist and filmmaker Alex Hedison got to know Alok while directing the film, which she took to the Sundance Film Festival. The two reunite on stage at the 2024 Aspen Ideas Festival for a conversation about confronting our fears and defying the boxes we find ourselves in. aspenideas.org

Real compassion breaks down the barriers that divide us. It's not just about doing nice things, it's about creating a safety net of care. True compassion blurs the lines between "me" and "you." Today, I welcome Alok Vaid-Menon, a writer, performer, and advocate known for their activism in the LGBTQ+ community. I ran across the concept of Feminine Exhibit Design when doing some post-conference research - and it perked my ears right up! What is feminine exhibit design? And, why is it important? Margaret Middleton has been focusing on these questions for several years now, and spent a little time with me to discuss. Margaret is a thought leader in the inclusive design space, designer of playful, enriching learning experiences, and speaker and consultant advocating for inclusive museum practices. In this week's episode, Margaret shares their thoughts on why Feminine Design principles are a critical aspect for inclusive design and how and when to use them. We discuss how acknowledging and resisting an andro-centric perspective is important in design work, and how difficult that can be considering the complexities of femininity. We also discuss what fem-phobia is and how it may present itself in our design work. Margaret tells us how and when a focus on feminine design emerged from their work and how their thought exercise on this topic has developed since then - including how Cute came to be the 7th element in the emergent Feminine Exhibition Design structure. The more I think about men's friendships, the more fired up I get. If I could paint an analogy for you, men's friendships feel like a big ball of yarn with thousands of strings that we have to untangle. There are a lot of narrowly defined stories about how a man should “be” in today's society - they should be powerful, they should provide and be self-sufficient, and they should be in control. But just because society was built for men, by men, does not mean these systems are working for the modern man. Studies show that men have nearly the same amount of friends as women, but their fear of vulnerability and authenticity prevents them from creating genuine, meaningful connections. So let's dig in and talk about the three systems of power that are keeping men in these very narrow boxes. And stay tuned as Part 2 comes out next week to explore more ideas around this topic. In this episode you'll hear about:Being a man can be lonely. Between suicide rates, mental health, drops in admission and graduation for higher education, and higher earnings, what does all this mean to “be a man”?Why we're in a weird, limbo place with redefining the definition of masculinity. Men are “allowed” to be more vulnerable, but the boundaries are so unclear.A breakdown of the 3 systems of power that are keeping men in a box, including capitalism and white supremacy. The many issues that are affecting men's friendships with women - women can be so much more than just romantic and sexual partners. Why men struggle to make meaningful connections in their community, especially with the loss of “third spaces” and circumstantial situations, like going through a divorce or navigating a new life as a widower.Resources & LinksBooks mentioned include All About Love, The Will to Change, How We Show Up, The Road Less Traveled, Bowling Alone, and Fair Play.I also recommend the works of Alok Vaid-Menon. In this episode of B4U Swipe, Dr Lauren and Dr. Kris continue discussing the nine principles of relationship anarchy. Principle 3: Imagine it and Practice, Practice, Practice (originally “Fake it til' you make it”)Episode Highlights include: Our arguments against “faking it til you make it;” the magic of support in a Karaoke family; caterpillars and phoenixes; how resisting norms is slow and hard; making space to reflect, imagine, and stay over your center; and the importance of support, including your own self-compassion. Shout outs to Alok Vaid-Menon and adrienne maree brown's wisdom. Overall, while we aren't fans of the title, we think this principle provides a gentle invitation to think about how you will bring your values to life across your relationships. Don't mind our arrogance at changing the title of the principle. Hope you like the rewrite as much as we do!
I've been engaging in conversations around liberation in business for the REAL Uplevel Interview Series, and it's been illuminating the consistent incongruences in the coaching, wellness, and healing industries. There are very real consequences when people with any kind of authority in these spaces view vast and global topics through their own micro-experiences. In this episode, I break down what some of those outcomes are, including upholding systems of supremacy and oppression and engaging in manipulative sales tactics. "…So I listened to a podcast this morning and oh my god, mostly, I'm just here to tell you to go listen to that other podcast. That other podcast is called Man Enough, which is not a podcast I necessarily would have picked up for myself. Although I like the premise. The interview was with ALOK Vaid-Menon, who is an Indian-American activist, speaker, and poet, who is nonbinary, and does a lot of public work around nonbinary identities, around being trans-feminine, and gender. Gender in terms of how does nonbinary identity and gender inclusion, and moving beyond binary understandings of gender at all, interface and interlace with justice, with elevating humanity?"The Man Enough podcast episode from July 26, 2021, featuring ALOK: (please note that the hosts of the podcast are very much clearly in a beginner space in terms of their learning about non binary identities and trans identities. So brace yourself for that. ALOK is gracious as an educator in the face of that, going into a space where I'm sure they knew they were going to be doing education. Just know that and do what you need to do to take care of yourself.) https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/alok-vaid-menon-the-urgent-need-for-compassion/id1571480224?i=1000530016080ALOK's website: https://www.alokvmenon.com/The Man Enough podcast website: https://manenough.com/podcast/Transcript and show notes at: https://powerpivot2.captivate.fm/episode/gender-and-a-podcast-recommendationRecorded 30 January 2023.

This week, we are re-airing a conversation we had with Alok Vaid-Menon in early June, before we had the final Dobbs decision. Alok's work is always salient but with the recent midterm election results showing an overwhelming affirmation of reproductive access, we believe their call for transformative thinking around gender essentialism and bodily autonomy is a way both to celebrate the wins at the polls and drive us towards a more expansive and imaginative vision of what's possible from here. Alok Vaid-Menon is a nonbinary writer, performer, public speaker, activist and artist exploring the themes of trauma, belonging, and the human condition. They are the author of Femme in Public, Beyond the Gender Binary, and Your Wound/My Garden. Alok has done a lot of work to interrogate their history, our collective history, and to probe beneath the surface of what we've come to accept as the norm. They challenge us all to use our imagination to re-wire what we believe is possible for ourselves and society around us. This is a really special conversation and our team, quite honestly, all felt gob-smacked by Alok's perspective. We let this conversation run long because we wanted you all to experience it and take it in as we did.
On the season 3 premiere of Do The Work, author, speaker, and thought leader on non-conformity Alok Vaid-Menon sits down with Denise for a candid chat about privilege politics, radical imagination, and the difference between living and existing. Alok dives into the importance of representation in the tech industry and shares tools to become embodied quicker.
As author, performer, and visionary Alok Vaid-Menon summed it "How can we say that we're a democratic nation with equal rights when gender non-conforming people live in existential terror every day?" In Selfie Aesthetics: Seeing Trans Feminist Futures in Self-Representational Art (Duke University Press, 2022) Nicole Erin Morse examines how trans feminine artists use selfies and self-representational art to explore transition, selfhood, and relationality. Morse contends that rather than being understood as shallow emblems of a narcissistic age, selfies can produce politically meaningful encounters between creators and viewers. Through close readings of selfies and other digital artworks by trans feminist artists, Morse details a set of formal strategies they call selfie aesthetics: doubling, improvisation, seriality, and nonlinear temporality. Morse traces these strategies in the work of Zackary Drucker, Vivek Shraya, Tourmaline, Alok Vaid-Menon, Zinnia Jones, and Natalie Wynn, showing how these artists present improvisational identities and new modes of performative resistance by conveying the materialities of trans life. Morse shows how the interaction between selfie creators and viewers constructs collective modes of being and belonging in ways that envision trans feminist futures. By demonstrating the aesthetic depth and political potential of selfie creation, distribution, and reception, Morse deepens understandings of gender performativity and trans experience. Daniela Meneses Sala is Peruvian Academic and Journalist. She holds an MSc in Gender (Sexuality) from the London School of Economics and Political Science. In October, she is starting a PhD in Latin American Studies at Cambridge University, funded by the Harding Distinguished Postgraduate Scholars Programme. Learn more about your ad choices. We speak with Alok about their work and advocacy, and what they learned from their aunt, Urvashi Vaid, the beloved LGBTQ rights activist who spent more than a decade working for equality at the National LGBTQ Task Force.
Alok ("A-loke") Vaid-Menon was born in College Station, Texas in 1991 to parents from India and Malaysia. When they were young they'd dress up in their mom and sister's clothes and dance around the living room for all their extended family, including their Auntie Urvashi (a gender non-confirming lesbian of color and national activist). The entire room would clap and cheer them on over syrupy bowls of gulab jamon. But when they performed a similar Bollywood routine onstage at the school talent show at age six ... they got laughed at by the entire school. Thus began a shame-filled odyssey through pretending to live as a boy -- or, at least, male-presenting -- for many years. And it also began an astounding personal dialogue and examination around gender which they're helping to lead globally today. Alok graduated summa cum laude from Stanford University with a Bachelors and Masters of Arts in feminest, gender, and sexuality studies. Stuffing their post-graduation work into boxes doesn't work but if forced to attach labels you might start with academic, author, artist, comic, poet, philosopher, or activist. Their work explores gender, trauma, and belonging and they call for body diversity, true gender neutrality, and our most basic tenets of self-determination. They advocate for a world of acceptance and love. Alok is the bestselling author of Femme in Public (2017), Beyond the Gender Binary (2020), and more recently a poetry book called Your Wound/My Garden (2021). I grew up the son of Indian immigrant parents in Canada with male and female binaries and the accompanying blue and pink clothes laid out in blue and pink nurseries. Gender divides only deepened with age and, looking back, I know they partially caused me to self-censor sides of myself. I remember painting my toenails and hiding them in my socks, secretly reading and loving The Babysitter Club books, and quitting figure skating once I was the only boy left in the class. Alok shared with me the history that dispels the relatively modern cultural story of the 'gender binary' and they taught me how, in India as just one example, colonialists three hundred years ago eliminated existing gender non-conformities in favor of distorted filterings and categorization. Alok created #DeGenderFashion, a global movement to degender fashion, they have performed in over 40 countries around the world, and they headlined the 2021 New York Comedy Festival. Alok and I talk: beauty standards, queer history, librarian pizza parties, trans-femininity, denim platform shoes, British colonization, bánh-mì sandwiches, self love, Alok's three most formative books, and much, much more. It was a joy spending time with Alok in Central Park in New York City. Get comfortable on the bench between us and let's flip the page into Chapter 106 now… What You'll Learn: How should we define gender? What is gender spirituality? What is the #DeGender fashion movement? How can we learn to see the world in a non-binary way? Why is hate the easy path? What is true gay and queer history? Happy Summer Solstice! (and happy Winter Solstice!) Have you noticed we're tilting further toward the sun compared to every other time of the year? While our Australian, Chilean, and Easter Islander friends are tilting further away? This means is time for another 3 Book bookmark -- our relatively recent innovation to add a little spice to our 333 chapters along the way. Sometimes a bookmark will be me on another podcast, sometimes it'll be me giving a speech, and sometimes, like this time, it'll literally just be a YouTube video I made years ago that's somehow struck a nerve online. Please enjoy "How to help someone with anxiety or depression." If you'd like to spread the 3 Books love, please share online or drop us a 10-second review at this link. Enjoy the bookmark and I'll see you on the New Moon with Alok Vaid-Menon!
This year brings an unprecedented surge of anti-trans legislation banning everything from sports participation to healthcare access. So far, we're tracking roughly 280 state bills that have been filed ahead of or during this legislative session. At the same time, the Supreme Court is on the precipice of delivering a final decision that will likely overturn Roe v. Wade, blocking people who can get pregnant from abortion care. These attacks are actually all part of the same movement, a movement against bodily autonomy and our ability to live freely no matter our model or make, a movement to re-entrench gender hierarchy and binary thinking. To that end, we're bringing you a conversation with Alok Vaid-Menon, a nonbinary writer, performer, public speaker, activist and artist exploring the themes of trauma, belonging, and the human condition. They are the author of Femme in Public, Beyond the Gender Binary, and Your Wound/My Garden. Alok has done a lot of work to interrogate their history, our collective history, and to probe beneath the surface of what we've come to accept as the norm.
