In the first half, psychotherapist and addictions counselor Dr. Donna Marks discussed the importance of new starts in a new year and ways to stick to goals and New Year's resolutions we set for ourselves. She emphasized that resolutions are more than mere wishes; they represent a commitment to change. "A resolution is important because it says I am committing to doing a particular thing or to stop a particular thing," Marks explained. Reflecting on the societal context, Marks noted that resolutions have historical roots, dating back to the Babylonians and later adopted by Christians.Marks highlighted common resolutions, such as improving finances, health, and relationships, but stressed the importance of having a concrete plan, and specific, actionable goals. "You can't just say you want to save money. How much do you want to save every week?" Visualizing one's goals can be helpful, she suggested. "I encourage people to have little pictures around even on the dashboard of your car, of what your goal is...to keep you focused on that." Ultimately, Marks believes that everyone has the potential to succeed, stating, "This country gave me opportunities to rise out of poverty... and that's why people make resolutions—to stop the types of things that are blocking them from being successful."She also addressed the psychological barriers to change, noting that many people fear discomfort. "You have to be willing to be uncomfortable to experience the miracles that come from these resolutions," she remarked. On the topic of addiction, Marks pointed out that it often stems from external factors rather than inherent flaws. "Things are made to get us addicted. It's intentional," she said, citing the need for a supportive environment to combat these habits. She believes that while genetic predisposition can play a role, the responsibility lies in raising children with self-love and healthy habits.-------In the latter half, clinical social worker and certified hypnotherapist Jacob Cooper shared methods to increase well-being and motivation in the new year, as well as explored such topics as grief, mind-body techniques, numerology, and life purpose. Discussing the emotional weight of grief, especially during the holiday season, he pointed out how loss can amplify feelings of isolation. He believes that grief is a natural response to any ending, not just death, and that "if you want to heal it, you have to feel it." Cooper also touched on the significance of the upcoming year in numerology, describing 2025 as a time for "finding cohesion" after a period of upheaval. He urged listeners to embrace the present, stating, "The impermanence of our time here can lead to a more purposeful life."As a hypnotherapist, he helps clients explore past lives, often guiding them to answer the question, "Why am I here, and what's my purpose?" He encourages openness during sessions, suggesting that preconceived notions can limit the insights gained. He detailed various practices to enhance mental and emotional well-being, including the importance of gratitude and mindfulness in our fast-paced society. The Emotional Freedom Technique (EFT), which uses tapping on pressure points to promote emotional and physical flow can be a helpful tool, along with breathwork. "We take the breath for granted... just inhaling and exhaling mindfully can significantly improve brain health," Cooper stated. He also recommended understanding the "why" behind personal resolutions, suggesting that a self-loving motivation leads to lasting change. "If you have a strong why, you can have a very strong follow-up with how and what," he explained.

What Voice Are You Listening To? Are listening to the fear or the voice of love? One keeps us stuck in trauma, anxiety, upset and has us reaching for things that temporarily make us feel better like food, alcohol, drugs, technology. The other helps us acknowledge our pain, so we can resolve it and past traumas and live in a place of compassion, growth, and peace. So what voice are you listening to? In this conversation addictions expert, psychotherapist, and author of The Healing Moment : 7 Paths to Turn Messes Into Miracles of Love, Dr. Donna Marks talks about the voices we all hear of fear and love and how we can choose which ones we listen to, transform our negative experiences, and live with greater self-love. When we do that, compassion, forgiveness, calm, and joy emerge and we take back control of our lives, instead of giving it up to negative thinking, actions, and addictions. Then, we begin creating the lives we want. In this conversation on Polly Campbell Simply Said with Dr.Donna Marks you will hear: How the voices of fear limit our growth and happiness. How we can identify the things that dim our ability to love ourselves and others so we can learn to soothe ourselves? How our relationships with others are a result of how we love ourselves and how we can replace our need for control--the voice of fear--for love. Self-Love: The Key to Addiction RecoveryAired Tuesday, March 7, 2023 at 11:00 AM PST / 2:00 PM ESTMillions of lives are lost to addiction every year, causing more direct and indirect deaths than any other illness. My guest, Dr. Donna Marks, author of Exit the Maze, believes every addiction is a substitute for love. She is a renowned psychotherapist, addictions counselor, and teacher of A Course in Miracles for more than thirty years, and merges her professional experience and her own personal history of substance dependency to offer a single revolutionary solution to all addictions.About the Guest:Dr. Marks has been a licensed psychotherapist and addictions counselor in Palm Beach, Florida, for over thirty years. While working on her master's and doctorate degrees at Nova Southeastern University, Dr. Donna Marks never thought that she would become a renowned licensed psychotherapist and addictions counselor in Palm Beach, Florida. Additionally, if someone told her while she was in graduate school that she would write multiple books and receive over 25 awards for one of those books, she would have thought you must be joking. In this podcast, Dr. Marks shares her personal and professional journey in the field of psychology and discusses the significant events and people that led her to open her own private practice, develop a chemical dependency training program, which eventually turned into a four-year degree, and receive the Florida Governor's Council Award. Dr. Marks has been a psychotherapist, addictions counselor, and teacher of A Course in Miracles for over 30 years. She is a certified gestalt therapist, psychoanalyst, hypnotist, and sex therapist. During our discussion, she explains what gravitated her towards psychology and how she naturally felt like the resident therapist for her family and friends. Although she wasn't planning on attending graduate school, Dr. Marks recalls the reasons and circumstances that led her to receiving her MA in Counseling Psychology and her EdD in Adult Education at Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, FL. Throughout this podcast, Dr. Marks shares practical and thoughtful advice to those interested in the field of psychology. For example, she states “If I had it to do over, I would have gotten my MSW in Clinical Social Work” because “a lot of the Medicare and Medicaid insurance policies will pay clinical social workers. And at the time they would, they would not pay licensed mental health counselors.” She summarizes by stating “But if someone were going to start now, I would encourage them to get that MSW licensure, licensed clinical social worker for that. Because when you're first starting, you want to be able to serve as many people as you can, and for you to get reimbursed and for your patients to get reimbursed.” Dr. Marks shares that she became certified as a sex therapist because the state of Florida passed a law that you couldn't discuss sex in therapy without being certified as a sex therapist. She also mentions that if you are going to counsel people with additions, there are a lot of people with sex addictions so that is another reason why you should consider getting the sex therapist certification. She also discusses the benefits of getting training in, and becoming skilled at, gestalt therapy and psychoanalysis. Dr. Marks shares her experience with The Southeast of Florida Institute for Psychoanalysis and Psychotherapy as she received two certifications (one in psychoanalytic psychotherapy and one in psychoanalysis). Dr. Marks discusses the people who significantly impacted her and her academic and professional career. She also discusses how she developed a chemical dependency training program at Balm Beach Community College “where any therapist, nurse, or anyone that had these types of licenses, clinical social workers, family therapists could go and take any one of the courses that were offered and get continuing education credits.” This training program has grown into a four-year degree in addiction at Palm Beach State College and she received the Florida Governor's Council Award for developing this program. During our discussion, Dr. Marks discusses her books Learn Grow Forgive – A Path to Spiritual Success and Exit the Maze: One Addiction, One Cause, One Solution (revised). While discussing addiction, she states, “there has been a shift recently in psychology and in treatment to not call it addiction anymore. They're calling it brain disorder, substance use disorder, different behavior disorders. And I think that's a travesty because that model says that I'm born this way.” She explains why she doesn't believe people are born with an “addiction” gene.

Books That Make You Rethink Addiction, and Addictive Cycles We tend to think of addiction in terms of addiction to drugs, alcohol or sex. When we talk about our careers though, we use terms like “dedicated” and “hardworking”. When we talk about relationships, we use words like “madly in love” or “domestic abuse”. What if all these and more had their source in addiction, and getting to the bottom of them, and recognizing that, could help us break the addictive cycles that keep us trapped? Dr. Donna Marks helps people understand there's only One Addiction that changes forms, and all forms are deadly. She is an author, consultant, public speaker, and has been a psychotherapist for over three decades. Currently, she has a concierge psychotherapy practice in Palm Beach, Florida. Her two books are: “Learn Grow Forgive – A Path to Spiritual Success”, and “Exit the Maze: One Addiction, One Cause, One Solution” (revised). Dr. Marks says that every addiction is a substitute for love, and the only remedy is to substitute every addiction with acts of self-love. The more a person makes a loving choice in place of a self-destructive one, the addiction is forgotten, and restoring meaning and purpose to one's life. Find out more on Books That Make You. Title: Mental Health And Addiction Counselor, Educator, Psychotherapist Website: https://drdonnamarks.com/ Author: Exit the Maze: One Addiction, One Cause, One Solution Speaking Points: Exit the Maze: One Addiction, One Cause, One Solution sheds light on the failed addiction treatment industry and what can be done about it. Blame is useless. There is a solution. After decades of personal and professional experience, Dr. Marks claims abstinence and addressing the underlying trauma of addiction is not enough. With this approach, one addiction simply replaces another, and genuine self-fulfillment is never achieved. She asserts that addiction is not a brain disorder but rather an attachment disorder. When an attachment with a loving parent is missing or disrupted, an invisible hole forms, and addiction covers that void. Marks contends that every addiction is a substitute for love and the only lasting remedy is to substitute every addiction with an act of self-love. Each chapter provides exercises designed to help the reader heal the underlying void and focus on replacing addictive behaviors and reactions with loving behavior and actions. The more a person makes a loving choice in place of a self-destructive one, the addiction is forgotten, and one's life is restored with meaning and purpose.

Exit the Maze About the book: Dr. Donna Marks is the Author of “Exit the Maze: One Addiction, One Cause, One Cure” In this easy-to-read revised and expanded edition of Exit the Maze, Dr. Donna Marks makes the revolutionary claim that there is only one addiction with many faces, and the key to overcoming addiction is self-love. Millions of lives are lost to addiction every year, causing more direct and indirect deaths than any other illness. In a world where many things are uncertain, we do know this: There are many kinds of addiction, and in spite of treatment and everything else we're doing, addiction is only increasing. Dr. Donna Marks, a renowned psychotherapist, addictions counselor, and teacher of A Course in Miracles for more than thirty years, merges her professional experience and her own personal history of substance dependency to offer a single revolutionary solution to all addictions in this expanded and revised edition of Exit the Maze. No matter what someone is addicted to—alcohol, prescription or illegal drugs, smoking, working, gambling, and so forth—loving yourself is the key to recovery. This doesn't mean the road is easy or a few acts of self-care will do the trick; the journey to true self-love includes delving deep into your past trauma to understand where your addiction began, addressing those fear-based traumas with compassion and forgiveness, exchanging bad habits with beneficial ones, and staying committed to the recovery process. Allow love to guide you through the maze of addiction and back to living your best life.

Judy Jean Kwon grew up in a Korean-American video store where she fell in love with the art of filmmaking and story-telling. Born and raised in Los Angeles, she is a daughter of Korean immigrants. She split her time between Korea and America as a child and turned to the music and the arts. She started acting when she was 17. After 5 years of acting training, she went on to a successful commercial career, breaking the mold for Asian-American actors by taking on non-stereotypical roles. One of her first jobs was with Tarsem in the famous "Philip's flat TV" commercial where she proudly beat out over 300 Caucasian actors and landed the lead. She broke doors for ethnic actors and competed against non-Asian actresses. Unusual and uniquely beautiful, she went on to model for Herb Ritts, Steven Meisel, and acted in over 100 commercials. She played the lead in one of the first digital feature film to screen at Sundance Film Festival - "The Item".Kwon participated in the ABC's director fellowship, studied cinema at LACC, photography at Santa Monica College, and writing at UCLA.Kwon's mission is to give voice to the voiceless and tell stories of the underdogs that are ignored. It is time to Exit The Maze, according to a breakthrough book by a former addict (marijuana, alcohol, and nicotine) who, as a mental health counselor, has successfully treated over 6,000 patients during the past three decades. She has found what has proven to work in treating addiction. “Addiction behavior operates like a hungry mouse looking for cheese in a maze,” says Dr. Marks, based in South Florida. “The mouse frantically runs through the maze in all different directions looking for the cheese. The mouse doesn't care about the amount, the shape of the cheese, or its flavor. No matter what, it will race up and down the maze searching. Even if the mouse is shocked with electric current every time it eats the cheese, it may be traumatized, but presented with the opportunity, the mouse will still go after the cheese. Obsessed with getting the cheese, the mouse never seeks the exit out of the maze. A person caught in the maze of addiction is similar to the mouse in that the addict will continue to seek out the "cheese" (a metaphor for any addictive substance or behavior) in spite of negative feedback, no matter how punishing it becomes. Like the mouse looking for cheese, the addicted person will continue to run the maze, frantically searching for the next "reward" or fix. This has become a massive social problem.”http://drdonnamarks.comThe Douglas Coleman Show now offers audio and video promotional packages for music artists as well as video promotional packages for authors. I have been familiar for the work of Dr. Donna Marks for a while now, through the connection with her incredible daughter Hanna. I spoke with them on Recovery Radio a couple of years ago and was profoundly impressed. Donna Marks has been a licensed psychotherapist and addictions counselor in private practice in Palm Beach County for over 30 years. Dr. Marks specializes in working with individuals who have been unable to break unwanted patterns of behavior by working through the internal obstructions that stand in the way of achieving one's life goals. She believes that the combined methods of psychoanalysis and spirituality are a powerful method to not only heal the past and find freedom, but to also obtain meaning from all of those life events—the essential requirements for lasting change and a promising future. Listen in as Dr. Marks talks about her background, beginning as a single Mother, waitressing to pay the bills...all the way through to Grad School and a private practice where she incorporates healing concepts of truth, recovery and a Course in Miracles. I could not help but open up some of my own areas of need when speaking with her! You can find Dr. Donna at: http://drdonnamarks.com/
