Today, we are going to hear from CiCi Rojas, the 1st Latina in the year history of YMCA of the USA as 1st US National Board Chair! Congratulations! CiCi shares her DYI experience as a mother of 4 children, and college graduate, that by leveraging her Spanish, gave her the confidence to build alliances to work within Kanas City as a car salesman, to becoming the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce President in Dallas, Texas! The work into the boardroom she says, " was building my confidence to saying yes, put me in this role, I can do it!" which opened up more opportunities and also sponsorship into leadership roles. CiCi also mentions how sponsorship is just as important as mentorship, but the difference is this... "that people advocating for you as leader, while you're not in the "room," is someone who is really going to the line for you." WOW! CiCi's tenacity lead to her building a multicultural marketing agency, Tico Productions and Sports, for professional sports media to be broadcasted in Spanish for the NFL, MLB, and Hockey. She says, "this is the wake up call for all sports agencies on and off the field through technology and media regarding the Latino population." Understanding the importance of saying "yes!" to building community, sports advocacy for youth and creating important healthcare business alliances gave CiCi the opportunity to be the 1st Latina in history for this role as a US National YMCA Board Chair. Thank you CiCi, for breaking a 177 year old ceiling leading into the boardroom of the YMCA organization, here in the USA. Gracias, to Edelman PR agency and the USA National YMCA for this opportunity to share this wonderful story about Latinas breaking into the boardroom. In this episode, Adam Helweh, CEO of Secret Sushi, offers advice for turning page one rankings into results by using insight he's pulled from working with some of Silicon Valley's biggest brands, such as Edelman PR, Celigo, Broadcom, and others. You'll hear Adam's advice for creating future-proof content, reaching a more sophisticated audience, structuring your writing team, and much more.---------Quote"My guiding light has been to write and create the best [content] that you can create for the human being, but understand the things you need to make structurally visible to the devices that connect those human beings to the data. When you're able to do that and understand the content [the audience] is looking for and give them that, not only will your content usually rank really well, it'll be future-proof.” ---------Key TakeawaysEven if your content is well ranked, it won't drive results if the website is not designed for an optimal user experience.Content will only solve problems if it's the truth - this means using a writer who can avoid the fluff and get straight to the heart of the issue by understanding people's concerns. Active and prolific Republican communications and PR strategist for most of his career. Schmidt worked on the George W Bush presidential campaign, the Schwarzenegger campaign for California Governor, and ran John McCain's presidential campaign in 2008. Schmidt was the Vice Chair at Edelman PR and a political analyst for MSNBC. A founding member of the Lincoln Project, a group founded to campaign against Donald Trump, Schmidt officially left the Republican party in 2018 saying, “Today's GOP has become a danger to our democracy and our values. The Republican Party is an organized conspiracy for the purposes of maintaining power for self-interest, and the self-interest of its donor class. It's no longer dedicated to American democracy.” And for that, I couldn't agree more. So just how big is the podcast market today? If you want to understand the podcast market today, we have to understand it through the lens of people. There is no more authentic medium. There is no better way to build authority and what better way for you, your brand and your brand leaders to grow an audience of people that care about the conversations that matter to them? There are 2 million podcasts in the world today. That's the number of websites there were back in 1998. The latest statistics show that we now have 1.7. Billion websites. Purely from back of envelope estimates, there are 1 million podcast hosts in the world and those podcasts hosts have spoken to 50 million people. Let's think about podcasting from the perspective of the people who listen to podcasts. If you look at the data there are 1 billion people listening to podcasts every week. The COVID 19 pandemic has done a lot to put podcasts on the agenda both for us as listeners, but also as a valid option now for businesses. Consider that a lot of what we used to do in the world of traditional corporate communications from press releases analyst lunches to breakfast briefings to business events are no longer effective options. According to the latest Edelman PR trust report, people want CEOs to speak out. What are their views on diversity? What are their views on climate change? In many ways, these very personal conversations define our experience of brands today. The question has always been for corporate leaders and communications heads. How do you do that? Both in an authentic manner and a scale. Because the most valuable assets in any organization, i.e the people, the leaders don't scale by their very nature. We all know the power of an informal coffee meeting. That's where deals are done. However, you can't scale that kind of intimacy and by contrast the press release or the social media tweet don't offer the bandwidth, the engagement or the level of scale that we need as brands to reach the people that matter most. That's why podcasts offered the rare combination of both authenticity and scale. I encourage my clients to think of their podcast as like a coffee conversation at scale. So back to those 2 million podcast, should your brand also have a podcast? Consider your branded podcast as a communication interface for the leaders of your organization. Much in the same way that the websites in the early days provided a more effective communication interface for consumers and the brand. It was far more efficient to go to the website, order a product, find the store opening hours or send an email than phoning up the switchboard or reading news articles to find out more about the company or going to the store to find out it was shut. Your branded podcast too, provides a better way for your partners, your network and your clients to understand more about the people behind the brand. What do they care about? What are their views on different subjects and what is their journey within the organization? These conversations, both humanize and define brands today. Because people follow people, not brands.

Almost ten years ago, Lauren Wesley Wilson was aiming to climb the ad agency corporate ladder. But she was deterred; she didn’t see anyone who looked like her. No African American, LatinX or Asian men or women in leadership roles. So, she began a series of luncheons in her town of Washington, DC, “to bring together people of color in our industry because so many of us in the space were feeling isolated and alone...and we didn't have a community to call on as it relates to new business or getting promoted or how to navigate corporate America. Those series of luncheons became ColorComm, Inc., a national platform to advance women of color in business, now nine years and nine cities strong, with thousands of members. And, participants include names like Gayle King, Gloria Steinem, Bozoma Saint John, and Shelley Zalis. Some of the leading brands in media and marketing are sponsors -- from MWW and Edelman PR agencies, to Coke, Nike, ViacomCBS, Comcast and Publicis Groupe. In this conversation with media journalist and podcast host, E.B. Moss, Wilson talked about the strides made, the ongoing challenges for people of color, and the business imperative for the industry to include them. Highlights: On Data: "There's so much data out there, but it's about action and execution. Where I see companies fail are those companies that don't line-item a budget around changing this landscape. They spent all their money to get the data, but they haven't allocated money for change." On Action Items: "People of color in the agency, marketing and advertising space is such a small percent. So, if a company looks at its numbers and sees just a handful of people there, they need to set them up for advancement. But it’s two-fold: the individual working in the company oftentimes doesn't have the skills to know what to do. And that's why organizations like ColorComm exist, to train you, to give you the tools and resources and professional development and skills to understand your role within your company." Get all her thoughts and recommendations on thriving through diversity and inclusion, and how ColorComm is helping everyone step up by listening to the full episode.

Claudia Vecchio has assumed the position of CEO of Sonoma County Tourism. Vecchio has many years of experience in the industry, including multiple leadership roles in tourism organisations, serving as the State Tourism director at the Ohio Department of Development, Division of Travel and Tourism, and senior vice president overseeing the tourism group at Edelman PR in Chicago. In her new role, Vecchio will try to drive Sonoma County Tourism into record-breaking years, with out-of-the-box ideas and by sharing the message that wine country is open for business and ready to deliver the world-class experience that is expected. She replaces Ken Fischang, who stepped down in May. Interim Sonoma County Tourism CEO Tim Zahner told the Las Vegas Review Journal that, after the fires, Vecchio will have plenty on her plate when she arrives. “Claudia is stepping into a situation where the community of Sonoma County and the board and staff of Sonoma County Tourism have come together to not only support one another in our time of need, but also to rally around and get the word out that we are open for business and ready to welcome visitors to the Northern California they love,” Zahner said. Vecchio leaves her position as the first director of the state Department of Tourism and Cultural Affairs, which consists of the Commission on Tourism, Division of Museums and History, Nevada Arts Council and the Nevada Indian Commission. “In addition to its extraordinary natural beauty, Sonoma County exudes an incredible spirit of independent thinking, creativity and fortitude that truly sets it apart from any other destination,” Vecchio said in a statement. “The truest sense of this spirit has been on full display during the recent fires. It’s a privilege to join a team and represent a countywide tourism industry that can come together through challenging times to not only support one another, but also to rally around and get the word out that we are open for business and ready to welcome visitors to Northern California.” Vecchio said it should be a fairly easy transition on the marketing side, as Sonoma County has a few things in common with Nevada, like its independent, creative, maverick spirit. “It’s wineries versus casinos,” she said. “They are important drivers, but I see so much more to talk about.” Vecchio long has been a fan of and visitor to Sonoma County, having family in Bodega Bay. Upon moving to Sonoma County, she had planned to rent, but after the destructive fires and the even tighter rental market, she is in the process of buying a home. Vecchio is a former president of Destination Integration in Dallas and head of Ohio’s tourism office. She began working in Nevada in November 2011. She also has managed national brand launch campaigns for Taco Bell, Frito-Lay and Norwegian Cruise Lines and was on the promotion team that launched the Fox Broadcasting Network’s television programming. She also was a tour manager for the international education and entertainment organization, Up With People.
In episode 12, I sit down with Yaron Samid, a serial entrepreneur who already built 2 successful startups on Pando & Desksite took an idea he had after finding a weird credit card charge which led him to create BillGuard a “collective brain” of credit card charges needed to be created to warn people about common grey charges. Yaron's journey to a successful exit was long, hard, and fun from his really short stint at Edelman PR after college, to Forman Interactive (Register.com), Backweb, Desksite, Pando and finally BullGuard. Yaron's career originally started in marketing and moved to product marketing and management which he realized made him a better founder and one that gave him a better perspective on running a business.
"I set my intention every morning" - Megan Driscoll Megan Driscoll - Founder & CEO Megan Driscoll graduated from the University of Chicago with the intention of starting in finance. She got wind of a paid internship with Edelman PR and applied for no other reason than she was in need of work. However, when she received formal offers from both Edelman and Merrill Lynch on the same day, Megan went with Edelman. After completing the Edelman internship, Megan accepted positions of increasing responsibility with mid-size and large PR firms, gaining exposure and knowledge of the health care space. She grew from managing accounts to becoming a Senior Account Executive, working directly with clients to shape their corporate image and public messaging. She developed strong relationships with those clients, some of whom she still works with to this day. She had taken on a much bigger, hands-on role than she previously thought possible. Megan learned how to serve clients, and how to develop and host events. She had a role in everything that went on. As her career in PR grew, Megan learned the skills of actually running a business, and she was part of the decision making process on staffing, billing, and other management decisions. Megan was recruited to become president of Behrman Communications, a role in which she managed agency operations, mentored staff, recruited new business, and provided strategic advisement to clients. The responsibilities of the role gave her valuable experience, but Megan wanted to put her energies to work for her own shop. She left Behrman and started EvolveMKD. Megan gave a lot of thought to how she wanted to craft her own agency. She looked around the industry and realized that no agency was offering the senior-level, hands-on, personalized attention in the health care and beauty space that she knew she could provide. Nor was there one that was owned, run, and staffed entirely by women. Megan seized this opportunity to try an experiment in both client service and employee retention, by focusing on senior level staff first, and combining that with a flexible and healthy working environment that is not a mainstay in the public relations world. Coming up with the finances and access to credit to get started was a challenge. Megan needed operating capital to pay staff and cover the basic business functions until she could get some revenue coming in, but it was difficult to ascertain just how much and when. She and her husband poured their own savings into the venture. They also gave over half of their home as office space for Evolve HQ when it opened for business. Under Megan’s leadership, Evolve has grown to 18 employees with a near-perfect retention rate. It finished 2015 with $3.4 million in revenue, and is currently serving 20 brands. Megan is looking to expand into the Asian and Hispanic markets, and her focus remains on brands, services, and products that impact women’s lives in a positive way, whether that be in the health care, beauty, or lifestyle space. Megan worked hard to establish a company culture that encourages growth and communication. Evolve, by design, is an open office that encourages the free flow of communication among staff. Everyone, including senior staff, operates in a wide open bullpen, and all are encouraged to keep the lines of communication open. From a managerial perspective, Evolve’s policy is to encourage consistent and informal management-staff interaction to keep the lines of communication open and foster ideas and creativity. Megan remains focused to growing Evolve and expanding its reach in the health and beauty space. Through the success of her company, she has been able to engage in helping women advance their careers. She likes to share her story and how she has overcome the challenges of being a female entrepreneur in order to help empower other women to pursue their goals. She has also made philanthropy and giving back to the community a cornerstone of Evolve’s business.
