Send us a textIn this episode, we dive into the pervasive challenge of managing the harsh inner critic many women physicians face. We explore the origins of this critical voice, how it develops, and its impact on our lives. Let's also talk about compassionate strategies to identify, understand, and quiet this inner critic, so you can learn to live life with less negative noise.Key Takeaways:Understanding the Inner CriticOrigins:Often rooted in societal expectations to excel and please others, reinforced from childhood through adulthood.Influenced by environments that equated worthiness with achievement, perfection, and making others happy.Behaviors and Patterns:Turns leisure activities into measurable achievements.Critiques rest and relaxation as laziness, perpetuating burnout and overwork.Mirrors external voices like strict authority figures, internalized as self-judgment.Why It's Harmful:Keeps high achievers in a cycle of overwork and self-criticism.Prevents true rest, joy, and connection with oneself and others.Leads to feelings of inadequacy and perpetuates burnout.Strategies for Taming the Inner Critic:Recognize and Name the Critic:Identify the inner voice as separate from yourself.Give it a name to acknowledge when it's active (e.g., “The Judge” or “The Boss”).Understand Its Intentions:Reflect on what the inner critic is trying to achieve.Recognize that, while misguided, it believes it's helping you succeed.Compassionately Shift Its Role:Accept that this part of you exists but doesn't have to lead.“Move it to the back seat” by listening without allowing it to dictate actions.Practice self-empathy and reframe thoughts as opinions, not truths.Reimagine Success Without the Critic:Visualize a life where the critic isn't in control—where rest, joy, and imperfection are part of your journey.Mentioned Resources:Books and Concepts:Internal Family Systems Therapy by Richard Schwartz.Positive Intelligence by Shirzad Chamine.Invitation to Join Unbound:Are you a woman physician battling burnout, perfectionism, people-pleasing, or a lack of boundaries? Hello hi! In Episode 101 of Medium Lady Talks, we explore a timely question, "Do You Have Something to Say?" with visibility expert Megan Hamilton from Ubu Skills. We delve into three distinct responses: "No," "Maybe," and "Yes," uncovering valuable insights for each listener who finds themselves answering the question. For those who answer "No," Megan emphasizes the importance of evaluating the safety of using our voices and overcoming uncertainties about our opinions. She offers practical advice on how to identify and articulate what we want to express. For the "Maybe" responders, Megan highlights the significance of recognizing the conditions and barriers we impose on speaking out. She stresses the importance of considering the audience and setting boundaries, which can help diminish sensitivity to others' reactions. For the confident "Yes" responders, Megan provides guidance on choosing where to share our voices. She emphasizes the individual journey of discovering one's comfort zone and gradually expanding it by stepping out of familiarity. Furthermore, Erin and Megan reflect on their positionality as het-cis white women, acknowledging the privilege it entails and the responsibility to amplify marginalized voices. If you're like most listeners of this podcast, you first started your business not because you're an experienced business person… but because you have something you love to do, or you care about, and you decided to make it your full-time gig.And then, you find yourself in the situation we all find ourselves in as small business owners, which is that we have to sell our thing. Our product, our service, our offer. Whatever it is, it's only a business if we're selling it… and for most businesses, selling is an active process. We can't just wait for sales to come in – we need to set our sales and marketing processes up so that those sales actually happen. This is for many of us quite uncomfortable. But it doesn't have to be, and that's where today's episode comes in. We're talking all about selling – and specifically – sleaze-free selling. Selling in a way that feels good and aligned. And I have a guest today! Her name is Megan Smyth. Megan is a sales copywriter and consultant for mission-driven entrepreneurs. In this episode Lisa and Megan discuss:The importance of teaching your kids to think about thinking from a young age. Recognizing the difference between what actually happens and the narrative our brain tells around the same event. The difference harnessing the power of thought can make in parenting your teen. The power of flipping statements into questions and interrogating the narrative. Key Takeaways: All behavior is driven by thinking. If you can teach your teenagers how to change their mindset and externalize their thinking, you will give them better tools for success. As humans, people take action based on what they think. If a negative story is being told about facts, it can wear on relationships over time. The first step to changing your mindset, both for yourself as a parent and for your teenager, is identifying the stories that are being told around the events that are happening. If kids are going to make good decisions, they need to be resilient and brave and learn to take risks. They can increase their bravery by interrogating the stories that they are telling themselves. “If we can teach our kids how to think about their thinking and objectify it as something outside of themselves, then they can make better decisions, and, ultimately, the stories that are running their life are conscious instead of unconscious.” – Megan Hyatt MillerAbout Megan Hyatt Miller: Megan Hyatt Miller is the President and Chief Executive Officer at Full Focus and the co-host of the popular business podcast, Lead to Win. In today's conversation, I went down this incredible, unplanned rabbit hole with my friend Megan Miller. We both have a mutual love for journaling and I spent the first half of this conversation asking a lot of questions around her specific practice. It really made me realize how much of an impact my simple journaling practice has left on me.I'm hoping this gives you some inspiration on how you could get started journaling and what benefits you can expect by doing so.Aside from being a journaling enthusiast, Megan is a coach centered around helping high achievers detox off the drug of achievement. We discuss the potentially negative impact of relying on our career for validation. I don't think getting validation from my career is inherently bad but whenever I find that is the only area I'm relying on, this creates a major imbalance with my life. And surprise, surprise I kind of feel like I'm itching towards that right now and I'm curious for solutions so ask Megan questions about this subject too.Key Takeaways:How to make sure you start your day off the right wayCreate a journal practice that works for youHow journaling can remind you of all the progress you've madeDetoxing off the drug of achievementThe Gap and The Gain: high achievers guide to successFinding validation in other drawers of lifeMentions:The Gap and The Gain by Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy: https://www.amazon.com/Gap-Gain-Achievers-Happiness-Confidence/dp/1401964362More of Megan:Website: https://www.megan-miller.com/Megan's microstep journal: https://www.megan-miller.com/microstep-journalhttps://www.amazon.com/Voices-21st-Century-Women-Transforming-ebookMore of The Struggle is Real:Find show notes and more at https://www.tsirpodcast.com/Follow us on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/tsirpod/

Last week in Part 1 of my incredible conversation with Megan Dalla-Camina, we discussed rising up with confidence as women in the workplace, and the prevalence of burnout for women on a global scale. Megan had so many powerful insights to share that we just had to come back with Part 2 of our conversation. For today's episode, I wanted to tap into Megan's mindset and understand what she thinks needs to change to create a more inclusive and equal world for women to participate in. Megan has a powerful mindset and has courageously broken through some pretty major glass ceilings in her career. However, it wasn't smooth sailing or a linear path for her to get there. Megan looks back over her corporate career and reflects on the challenges and burnout she faced when she lacked that healthy mindset. We also talk about how creating positive change in the workplace is multi-faceted, and that there seems to be no silver bullet. But understanding these factors is important in the process of driving sizeable steps towards gender equality and inclusivity in our world. Megan shares her ideas around what ideal leadership could look like, from CEO's at the top to managers in the middle. She also shares the alarming statistics around women leaving the workforce due to lack of support and chronic burnout. We discuss ideas around getting clear on what we want for our careers and determining how to build true, lasting confidence. Discovering our own authenticity and learning to chart our own path will create agency over our lives. Once we are in control over our own wellbeing and mindset, it's then that we're able to choose what we do next. I'm grateful for the honesty Megan shared with us and I just know you'll be so inspired by her passion and dedication to empowering women to rise. As women, we're experiencing record levels of burnout on a global scale. We experience inequality in the workplace, struggle to prioritise ourselves and often lack the opportunity to look up. In today's episode, I chat with the amazing Megan Dalla-Camina about gender equality and the incredible work she does supporting women to rise in the workplace. As well as being an award-winning marketing director and strategist for corporate heavyweights, Megan is a bestselling author and the founder of Women Rising. Her company aims to empower women in their career leadership journey and in their lives. Megan has fought for a new path for women to own their power, embrace their sovereignty and rise. She shares her own background in experiencing a male dominated world where, like so many of us, she was taught to believe this was the norm. We dive into areas such as: The way we are conditioned and how under the patriarchy, women face the same challenges in all age groups and across many different cultures How women feel guilty about putting themselves first, which results in massive burnout in their lives Giving ourselves permission to prioritise our own wellbeing and create agency over our own lives The approach Megan takes in leading women to take back their power Megan has so much powerful insight to share on such a complex issue, and this is just Part 1 of our incredible conversation. I hope this episode inspires you to think about the structures in our society and how they may be holding you back from rising up in your power. Work-life balance sounds like a myth right? Or at the very least it's something you're striving for but struggling to actually achieve. As women, we want to be as many things as possible, and often our work and personal life demand that we fill in these various roles. But if we're meant to be many things at once and also live a balanced life, of course we're going to get overwhelmed. So what do we do? In today's episode, I'm talking to Megan Sumrell, a Time Management Coach for overwhelmed women. She's on a mission to help as many women as possible get out of a place of feeling overwhelmed, frazzled, and strung out by their calendar and help them get into a place of empowerment where they can have true work-life harmony. During our discussion, Megan speaks on why work-life balance is a journey, not a destination. l She shares the four levels of planning, the tangible steps you can take to achieve balance and why the most empowering thing you can do for yourself is to set boundaries. It's always a joy for me to see when someone is blessed with musical talent and then decides to share her blessings with others. I am very delighted to be joined today by a musician with a good heart - Megan Nadin! Today we will have a glimpse of Megan's life, music, and her debut album “This Was Then”. All the way from Thunder Bay, Canada, Megan moved to the music city last January. This emerging artist has a very unique and original sound, with her voice being her main instrument, it is a surprise to many that she only started her music career in 2017. Her mission is to change lives by being an honest and authentic voice to those in need and providing hope through altruistic platforms. This is very palpable to Megan's life because she was a teacher before she pursued her career and passion for music. Wanting her music to be so real, she masterfully uses lyrics and melody that help paint the picture of the story, Megan is lucky enough to work with some really great creatives in the industry. Producer/songwriter Johnny Black has helped her create a demo. From there, she has built it up with the producer, Keith Thomas, who has worked with incredible people like Whitney Houston and Amy Grant. With this wonderful team, the production is stellar. The brilliance of how it was crafted around the subtleties of Megan's voice is very evident. Weight loss journey Megan is not only an inspiration in her music career but also her weight loss journey. She has lost 61 pounds! Knowing family and friends with medical conditions, and wanting to be around for a really long-time inspired Megan to make sure that she has a healthy body and mind. She apprenticed to be a chef for two years and started making her meals from scratch. It did not happen in an instant. It also helped that Megan is surrounded by strong and empowering women helping her not to view her weight as a struggle. As an artist, she wants us to stand up for who we are as people. That it's all about a good mindset and how people treat themselves. Inspirations behind her songs Beautiful Things was written when her friend gifted her the Rumours album by Fleetwood Mac. Megan and her friend were talking about the success and everything good that came from the album, but the band was suffering as a group. Unexpectedly, the lyrics came out from her mouth: “it's crazy that some of the most beautiful things come together when things are falling apart, like the sweetest song written by a broken heart”. While the album inspired the main lyric, the actual verses are built upon a series of journal entries written down by Megan. Heart of a Lion was Megan's first opportunity to work with the producer, Keith Thomas. It was her first writing session with Keith, and he just started playing the piano and Megan began singing into the air. Voila! Lyrics and melodies are coming out, and the song was created within that day. This has set the precedence of their future projects together. In fact, he ended up being the executive producer of this new album. The song was influenced by the notes that Keith was playing. It painted a picture in Megan's head where she envisioned a person that had it all together but deep down, this person is falling apart. The Joker was literally from the movie “Joker”. The movie unmasked and unveiled a lot of the things people deal with in society. She was so moved and inspired that she was able to write the song in one night. She painted the life of this beautiful person who had been jaded and treated unfairly. Learn more about Megan Get to know more about Megan's life, music, and even blogs by visiting her website. "Because at the end of the day, we all get old. And we know our looks can only take us so far. It's about who we are on the inside. It's about how we treat people, and it's about how we treat ourselves." "I think naturally, you'll be more attractive no matter what weight you are, no matter how you look, or how people will perceive you there will be like an inner beauty that shines out that makes you beautiful, no matter what the physical appearance is." "You are enough. You have a purpose; our purpose is always changing and growing and evolving, but just go with the flow and step into the fear." "I set my intention every morning" - Megan Driscoll Megan Driscoll - Founder & CEO Megan Driscoll graduated from the University of Chicago with the intention of starting in finance. She got wind of a paid internship with Edelman PR and applied for no other reason than she was in need of work. However, when she received formal offers from both Edelman and Merrill Lynch on the same day, Megan went with Edelman. After completing the Edelman internship, Megan accepted positions of increasing responsibility with mid-size and large PR firms, gaining exposure and knowledge of the health care space. She grew from managing accounts to becoming a Senior Account Executive, working directly with clients to shape their corporate image and public messaging. She developed strong relationships with those clients, some of whom she still works with to this day. She had taken on a much bigger, hands-on role than she previously thought possible. Megan learned how to serve clients, and how to develop and host events. She had a role in everything that went on. As her career in PR grew, Megan learned the skills of actually running a business, and she was part of the decision making process on staffing, billing, and other management decisions. Megan was recruited to become president of Behrman Communications, a role in which she managed agency operations, mentored staff, recruited new business, and provided strategic advisement to clients. The responsibilities of the role gave her valuable experience, but Megan wanted to put her energies to work for her own shop. She left Behrman and started EvolveMKD. Megan gave a lot of thought to how she wanted to craft her own agency. She looked around the industry and realized that no agency was offering the senior-level, hands-on, personalized attention in the health care and beauty space that she knew she could provide. Nor was there one that was owned, run, and staffed entirely by women. Megan seized this opportunity to try an experiment in both client service and employee retention, by focusing on senior level staff first, and combining that with a flexible and healthy working environment that is not a mainstay in the public relations world. Coming up with the finances and access to credit to get started was a challenge. Megan needed operating capital to pay staff and cover the basic business functions until she could get some revenue coming in, but it was difficult to ascertain just how much and when. She and her husband poured their own savings into the venture. They also gave over half of their home as office space for Evolve HQ when it opened for business. Under Megan’s leadership, Evolve has grown to 18 employees with a near-perfect retention rate. It finished 2015 with $3.4 million in revenue, and is currently serving 20 brands. Megan is looking to expand into the Asian and Hispanic markets, and her focus remains on brands, services, and products that impact women’s lives in a positive way, whether that be in the health care, beauty, or lifestyle space. Megan worked hard to establish a company culture that encourages growth and communication. Evolve, by design, is an open office that encourages the free flow of communication among staff. Everyone, including senior staff, operates in a wide open bullpen, and all are encouraged to keep the lines of communication open. From a managerial perspective, Evolve’s policy is to encourage consistent and informal management-staff interaction to keep the lines of communication open and foster ideas and creativity. Megan remains focused to growing Evolve and expanding its reach in the health and beauty space. Through the success of her company, she has been able to engage in helping women advance their careers. She likes to share her story and how she has overcome the challenges of being a female entrepreneur in order to help empower other women to pursue their goals. She has also made philanthropy and giving back to the community a cornerstone of Evolve’s business.
