Emotional Intelligence in Communication: Building Stronger ConnectionsIn a recent episode of The Thoughtful Entrepreneur, host Josh engages with Steve Gallegos, the president and founder of the Stevie G. Success Group. Steve's varied career as a U.S. Marine, police officer, trial lawyer, commercial photographer, and recording artist provides him with unique insights into the art of communication. This blog post explores key themes from their conversation, offering actionable advice and expert recommendations to enhance your communication skills.Steve Gallegos emphasizes that effective communication is crucial for success in both personal and professional settings. He identifies three pillars of effective communication: self-talk, audience focus, and engagement techniques. Self-talk involves the internal dialogue within our minds, which can often be negative due to past experiences. To overcome this, Steve suggests cultivating positive self-talk by identifying and challenging negative beliefs and replacing them with positive affirmations. This transformation can boost confidence and improve communication skills.Focusing on the audience is another critical aspect of effective communication. Steve advises understanding your audience's needs and tailoring your message to resonate with them. Engaging actively with your audience by asking questions and encouraging participation fosters a deeper connection. Steve also discusses his approach to client engagement, emphasizing the importance of addressing underlying communication issues within organizations. By investing in communication skills through workshops, personalized coaching, and fostering open communication, companies can enhance performance and morale. By now it is clear, the Red Wave election-denying candidates had hoped to ride left most still waiting on the beach. Those who questioned the outcome of the 2020 election lost key midterm races, which seemed to calm the nerves of many of those fearful as to where the Republic itself was headed. But as the parties begin to prepare for their respective presidential runs, a bigger question looms; one that has taken its cues from President Biden himself. Shortly after the January 6th attacks on the capitol — which were prompted by unfounded messaging about the election's illegitimacy — Biden sought to convey the severity of what had just happened. “The insurrection was an existential crisis — a test of whether our democracy could survive,” he said. Now, on the heels of the midterms, many not only openly wonder whether that democracy crisis is over, but also question if the words Biden chose were overblown in the first place. It is in that context, and as the 2024 elections come into focus, that we debate this question: Was January 6 an existential threat to American democracy? On December 15th, Andrew Keen, Internet Entrepreneur, Author, and Host of the “How to Fix Democracy” podcast, squares off against Election Strategist, Managing Partner at CAE Strategies, and Vice President of the Fair Elections Center, Rebekah Caruthers, as part of the “No Laughing Matter” series at the Comedy Cellar at the Village Underground in New York. Meet Connor Gross — an entrepreneur in his mid-twenties who is currently focused on building a portfolio of self-storage units across the state of Texas. Connor graduated from Northeastern University in 2020. As a part of a co-op program at Northeastern, he was able to spend a semester building his first start-up, Cardly, with his co-founder Giovanni, which was a snazzy looking credit card holder that attaches to the back of your iPhone. After selling the start-up in early 2020, Connor began learning about real estate investing. While the idea of investing in a short-term rental was attractive, in Connor's mind, being responsible for a place where folks actually lived or vacationed was a bit too much of a headache. So, he decided to start with self-storage. Tune in to an energetic, idea-producing conversation where Connor and I discuss: How he convinced the host of a luxury Airbnb villa in Bali to let him stay in their home for free How he founded, built, and sold his first e-commerce company Why you're never too young or too old to start your entrepreneurial journey Connor's hot takes on the future of travel and hospitality after living out of a suitcase for 2 years and traveling to more than 30 countries. Katherine Brodsky is today a freelance writer who in the early 2000's was the founder and editor-in-chief of an online culture magazine that was registering 600,000 pageviews a month while herself still an undergrad. In this episode of the Unsupervised Learning podcast, Razib explores a life lived online, from the dot-com bubble to the social media era. Brodsky, whose Substack is Random Minds, is an observer of culture from a peripatetic vantage point, a Canadian working in the American film industry, the daughter of Ukrainian immigrants watching her parents' homeland ravaged by war, and a public relations professional who moonlights as a commentator and photographer. Though an early adopter of internet technology who became a “content creator” before that was even the phrase, Brodsky over the last few years has been hitting the shoals of social media culture as her classical free speech-oriented liberalism and journalistic devotion to a bare modicum of objectivity run up against the realities of 2020's “moral clarity” where strident viewpoints are prized. Razib and Brodsky agree that Nicholas Carr's 2010 book The Shallows already has the character of a Cassandra-like prophecy, as the internet has become a tool not for mental liberation but for enslavement to impulse and the mob. Brodsky outlines her polestar when observing and commenting on the culture, which emphasizes a level of detachment or sympathy for the “other” that is sorely lacking in much of mainstream 2020's discourse.
Ryan Doyle (@Ryan___Doyle) grew up on a farm in upstate New York. He started driving at the age of 11 (and didn't realize that was illegal until a cop pulled him over on the side of a dirt road one afternoon). Ryan grew up on dial up internet. In middle school, he got a $40 Korean mp3 player, which was his first real brush with technology. In high school, he taught himself and built a couple of e-commerce stores — his grandma didn't understand how his "computer games" could be making him money. Tune in to hear the story of: how the idea of Magic Sales Bot originated how he scaled it to $3,000 in MRR how he raised money from @calmfund what he's focused on over the next 12 months Zero to (point) One is hosted by yours truly, Zach Busekrus (@zboozee). And there's where this show comes in. Zero to (point) One features a collection of ideas that may go nowhere, or just might change the world, from people you've never heard of, who may just become household names. A nod to tech founder Peter Thiel's Zero to One framework, Zero to (point) One explores the beginnings of (very) early-stage creators and entrepreneurs whose first chapters are still being written. As a leader, even outside of retail, what might be the writing on the wall that requires you to adapt, even if it's in a counter intuitive manner? Aldo talks to Craig Newmark, founder of Craigslist, about his journey as an entrepreneur and as a philanthropist. Having donated over 60% of his net worth to charity, Craig reflects for the very first time to stop pledging & giving his fortune and speaks about what might be next. Guest Introduction: My next guest has achieved what many tech entrepreneurs (myself included) can only dream of. In 1995, Craig Newmark started curating a list of San Francisco arts and technology events, which he personally emailed to friends and colleagues. People were soon calling it "Craig's List," and when Newmark turned it into a company, he monetized it minimally, opting for a business model that prioritized "doing well by doing good." Today's Craig's e-mail list from the mid-nineties has turned into a massive company. With more than 5 billion ads that have been posted on the site, the vast majority for free. Even though Craig Newmark hasn't been involved in the day-to-day operations of Craigslist since the year 2000, he does appear to have continued his journey of making the internet a more safe and above all comprehensive place. In 2011 my guest founded “craigconnects” an organisation to support the efforts of non-profit organisations who fight against global poverty. And in 2015 he set up Craig Newmark Philanthropies to advance people and grassroots organizations that are “getting stuff done” in areas that include trustworthy journalism & the information ecosystem, voter protection, women in technology, and veterans & military families. “The trustworthy press is the immune system of democracy,” Craig said in a recent interview with the Canadian Press Gazette in February of this year “Instead of limiting or stopping this spread of disinformation, I could see that frequently the press was being gamed into spreading disinformation. And so intuitively I recognised that something was going very badly wrong” - And that my guest was serious about attacking anything that causes such disinformation and chaos became clear when he started putting his money where his mouth is: To give a few examples: In June 2018, Newmark gave $20 million to the CUNY Graduate School of Journalism, which renamed itself as the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism after the gift. In February 2019, Newmark gave another $10 million to Columbia Journalism School to launch a new center for journalism ethics and security. Many other examples can be found where my guest visibly supports digital wellbeing, security and above all to support the people who fight to protect the values that America aspires to: fairness, opportunity and respect. Most importantly! Craig appears to be someone very grounded and very aware of what is going on around him. He is an avid bird watcher and last but most certainly he can very much appreciate Dad jokes. Craig a very warm welcome to you!

Debbie Langley with Experience More Inc, is an Internet Entrepreneur, brilliant social media strategist, Wellness Mentor, Teacher, and Philanthropist. Thanks for being here today Debbie, welcome. What makes your life amazing? I think there are a number of things that make my life amazing. These include a positive outlook; willingness to try new things and to work hard; acceptance that failure is one step closer to my goals; and probably the most important is my faith that God is in the details of my life, He wants me to succeed. Tell me what accomplishments your most proud of: Raising my 6 children to be contributing, loving, service-oriented adults. I am extremely proud of my children and their families. What is the toughest thing you have had to overcome in your life? Probably my divorce after 32 years of marriage. All I had ever really wanted to be was a good wife and mother. It affected me in so many ways. I thought getting the divorce papers signed would allow me to move forward in my life. Unfortunately, it took almost 6 more years to have everything else finished. Do you have any skills or talents that most people don't know about? When I was a teenager, I started managing one of my dad's garages. Besides being a manager, I was also an auto mechanic. I am self-taught in many things. I believe in constantly learning. In 2019, I graduated from college with 3 associate degrees. Two in IT, Business Intelligence and Database Administration and the other in integrated studies. What does it take to have an amazing life? It takes courage, bravery, and a can-do attitude. Life is always changing and we never really know what's ahead of us. If we have courage to face our obstacles, bravery to step into the unknown, and the attitude that we can do it, then nothing can stop us. If there were only three ideas that you leave for this world and your posterity, what 3 ideas would you leave for them that could lead them to have an amazing life? 1. You are a precious child of God. He will always love you and be there with His arms outstretched towards you. 2. Be reconciled with God and His laws and everything else will work out. 3. With God all things are possible. Be strong in your faith. Doubt your doubts, not your faith. If you want a truly amazing life that is connected and complete, you need the “you have value program” If you are willing to make some changes, be kind to yourself, fail forward and continue to try, or stop chasing comfort. Andrea is the founder and the CEO of a company called WordLift. We're going to talk about the kind of activities that WordLift does, but first of all, welcome to the show, Andrea, and tell the folks a little bit about WordLift and what you do there? Andrea: Thanks, Larry. I'm really excited to be on the show today. WordLift originally started as a plugin for WordPress, and now it's evolving outside of WordPress and helps people create knowledge graph. The purpose of this knowledge graph is to improve the content visibility over search engines like Google. So in a way you can think of us as an advanced SEO tool. Larry: Got it. I think that's a common way that people come to structured data and knowledge graphs and things like that is through a concern about being found on the web. But there's a whole other aspect to it as well. Tim Berners-Lee gave this famous TED Talk in 2009, I think, about his vision for the evolution of the web and how it would be more connected than it is. So that rather than having these siloed databases and content repositories, you could share things more openly.

David Sams - The Marketing Guru who Started Jeopardy, Oprah, & Wheel of Fortune -------- David Sams is one of the world's most respected marketing strategists, a nine-time Emmy® award-winning TV producer, and emerging technologies guru. He has been featured in the pages of TV GUIDE, USA TODAY, and ENTERTAINMENT WEEKLY. He has appeared on 60 MINUTES, ENTERTAINMENT TONIGHT, NBC'S TODAY, DATELINE NBC, and WORLD NEWS TONIGHT. Sams is the archetypal entrepreneur a preeminent idea man whose track record is synonymous with success. In the 1980's, Sams helped to turn WHEEL OF FORTUNE and JEOPARDY into the two highest-rated shows in syndication history, while head of global marketing and creative affairs for a family owned syndication company called King World. Soon thereafter the company went public and became the darling of Wall Street and one of the most profitable companies in the nation. Years later, without a penny of debt on its books, King World sold for billions of dollars. In 1986, Sams launched the OPRAH WINFREY SHOW into national syndication. His creative marketing efforts made Oprah a household name even before the talk show host hit the airwaves. She was #1 in nearly every TV market from her very first day on the air. Sams is considered to be one of the greatest marketers in TV syndication history. He re-invented the way syndicated shows and personalities are marketed, making a lasting impression on viewers. To this day, WHEEL OF FORTUNE, JEOPARDY, and OPRAH remain the top-rated shows in all of syndication. As a TV PRODUCER, WRITER AND DIRECTOR, Sams has won 9 Emmy® Awards. He has produced news magazines, music programs, reality shows, and documentaries for multiple networks and syndicators. He is a member of the Director's Guild of America. As a DIRECT RESPONSE MARKETER, Sams is responsible for over $120,000,000 in sales. In 2005, he won a TELLY AWARD as well as a US INTERNATIONAL FILM AND VIDEO FESTIVAL AWARD for his BEST OF HEE HAW infomercial for Time-Life. In just one year, over 1 million HEE HAW DVDs were sold. Interactive television that calls for audience participation (meaning "pull out your credit card now") is the key to much of Sams' success. As a commercial producer and director, Sams has won multiple awards, including five ADDYs. He has also been honored by the U.S. Olympic Committee for his fund-raising efforts, and is featured in WHO'S WHO IN AMERICA, WHO'S WHO IN ENTERTAINMENT, and WHO'S WHO IN THE WORLD. As an INTERNET ENTREPRENEUR, Sams has launched numerous successful online ventures. In late 1999, he created an Internet company that generated over $10,000,000 of revenue in less than 3 months--with only a half-dozen employees and virtually no marketing costs. He was instrumental in launching the .cc domain with Clear Channel Communications, as well as the .tv domain with the dotTV Corporation. Sams' portfolio of online properties continues to grow through both development of original content and acquisitions. He owns thousands of great domain names, which he refers to as his "beach front cyber real estate". Sams also owns dozens of Internet sites including ToddlerPlanet.com, KeepTheFaith.com, FaithDates.com, MyJewelryAuction.com, RepublicanHub.com, DemocratHub.com, Skiing.cc, Bowling.cc, Stockbroker.cc, HomeTheaterNews.com, HollywoodStars.US, and Golfing.cc. Sams has been a major force in the growth of "family friendly" entertainment media. In 1995, he brought together eleven major music labels and some 65 recording artists to release a seven CD compilation titled KEEP THE FAITH. Marketed under his own label, TVFirst, at a retail price of $124.95, the collection has been certified PLATINUM by the RIAA, with over 1,000,000 albums sold. Most recently, Sams created music compilations for Time Life and Sony, featuring superstar artists Christina Aguilera, American Idol's Ruben Studdard, Gloria Estefan, Patti LaBelle, Wynonna, and Sarah McLachlan--just to name a few. Sams has created and produced multiple news magazine programs. In 1991, he created and executive produced TRIAL WATCH, which ran for two seasons on the NBC television network. The daily program covered all of the hot legal battles of the rich and famous and led to the later development of networks such as COURT TV. Sams also created and executive produced ETC NEWSMAGAZINE, which made national headlines because of its ongoing coverage of underage teenagers getting into violent R-rated movies. Sams' program covered the issue in-depth, including hidden camera footage of kids continuously gaining admission to movies without question from theater ticket sellers. The Clinton White House turned to Sams for his special coverage in an effort to challenge theater owners to change and police their ticket-selling policies to minors. Following a special screening of Sams' ETC Newsmagazine, which also aired in prime time on PAX TV, President Clinton announced pledges by thousands of members of the National Association Theater Owners that they would require photo identification from young people for R-rated movies. This policy is strictly enforced today. Sams is also very instrumental in raising awareness and money for numerous non-profit organizations. He has been honored by the U.S. Olympic Committee for his fund-raising efforts, made significant contributions to organizations such as MDA, was President of Christian Network Holdings, and is one of the founding members of Operation DVD, an appeal to patriotic Americans to donate their new and used DVDs which are then shipped to our fighting men and women overseas. Safe entertainment is a concept that is difficult at best for our Soldiers, Sailors, Airmen and Marines in Iraq and Afghanistan. Even baseball and softball games are no longer possible because of snipers, mines, bombs and other terrorist activities. Sams has strong retail alliances. In 2004 he created and produced a program called DVDWEEKEND that aired on the Tribune stations, including SuperStation WGN. The program enticed people to run to their phones and computers (via DVDWeekend.com) to rent and buy their favorite DVDs. Thousands of people did just that, and within weeks Sams' wholly-owned DVDWEEKEND became WalMart.com's #3 online affiliate in the entire world. Most recently, Sams launched a motion picture company, God and Country Pictures, with the intention of producing multiple movies for the big screen over the next 5 years. In addition, in 2008, he will launch CharityOne, a 24-hour, all-digital charity Television network. Sams has consulted a vast array of broadcasters and Internet companies including: CBS, Clear Channel, Westinghouse, Motown, Warner Music, Paxson Communications, dotTV Corporation, Time-Life, Integrity Publishers, Sony, and many others. He has worked on behalf of many entertainers, from Michael Jackson to Garth Brooks. Today, he is consulting some of the world's top companies in the development of digital television brand channels. Sams got into the media business by selling freelance photos of local high school sporting events to a local, Columbus, Ohio newspaper when he was just 13 years old. A year later, the editor of the paper asked him to write an entertainment column for teenage moviegoers. Sams jumped at the idea when he realized that he'd never have to pay for a movie or concert ticket again. The column was so popular that it was syndicated to other papers. At age 15, Sams moved into radio, hosting a morning radio show for a small station in Columbus, Ohio. He then anchored a local community newscast. Soon thereafter, he moved into commercial TV, creating a magazine show that put him on the list of PEOPLE TO WATCH by COLUMBUS MONTHLY magazine. He went on to create numerous shows throughout Ohio, and became executive producer and head of marketing for WBNS-TV in Columbus, where he drove that station's EYEWITNESS NEWS to a 53 share at 6 p.m., making it the highest-rated local newscast in the entire nation. Of course, there are those programs in Sams' career that he'll never quite live down. At about age 20, Sams created the very first TABLOID TV show in the world, FRONT PAGE SATURDAY NIGHT, which aired in Ohio. The program became so popular that it actually garnered as high as a 40 share in prime access. He also produced and was color commentator of a national TV show called ROLLERGAMES--where skaters had to maneuver around the Wall of Death, and keep from falling into the live Alligator Pit. After screening the program, one newspaper reviewer wrote that Sams was personally responsible for the decline of the western civilization!
