Daily Prophet: Talks from leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
May we bury—very, very deep—any element of rebellion against God in our lives and replace it with a willing heart and a willing mind.
Since the organization of the Church, leaders have called for world-wide religious liberty and harmony: “We claim the privilege of worshiping Almighty God according to the dictates of our own conscience, and allow all men the same privilege, let them worship how, where, or what they may” (Articles of Faith 1:11). In this episode, Dr. Joshua M. Sears, associate professor of ancient scripture, details how we might answer the prophetic call to not only love and respect people of different faiths but to also learn from them. He discusses the importance of adapting trustworthy interfaith resources into our spiritual lives. Additionally, he details how to locate and evaluate reliable resources, and describes one ecumenical resource, BibleProject, as an example. Without diluting our doctrinal uniqueness or missionary mandate, we can build strong relationships with our religious neighbors and learn from the truth that is “scattered liberally across the globe” (Elder Christofferson). My invitation is to act now to secure your place as one who is valiant in the testimony of Jesus.
Elder Christofferson speaks about how the importance of having a testimony of Jesus and being valiant in it. “What is the testimony of Jesus? It is the witness of the Holy Spirit that He is the divine Son of God, the Messiah and Redeemer. It is John's testimony that Jesus was in the beginning with God, that He is the Creator of heaven and earth, and that ‘in him was the gospel, and the gospel was the life, and the life was the light of men.' It is ‘the testimony of the Apostles and Prophets, … that He died, was buried, and rose again the third day, and ascended into heaven.' It is the knowledge that “there is no other name given whereby salvation cometh.” It is the ‘testimony, last of all,' given by the Prophet Joseph Smith, ‘that he lives! … That he is the Only Begotten of the Father—that by him, and through him, and of him, the worlds are and were created, and the inhabitants thereof are begotten sons and daughters unto God.'” What is your testimony of Jesus? For over 50 years, For the Strength of Youth has been a guide for generations of Latter-day Saint youth. I always keep a copy in my pocket, and I share it with people who are curious about our standards. It has been updated and refreshed to better cope with the challenges and temptations of our day. The new version of For the Strength of Youth is available online in 50 different languages and will also be available in print. It will be a significant help for making choices in your life. Please embrace it as your own and share it with your friends. This new version of For the Strength of Youth is subtitled A Guide for Making Choices. To be very clear, the best guide you can possibly have for making choices is Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ is the strength of youth. So the purpose of For the Strength of Youth is to point you to Him. It teaches you eternal truths of His restored gospel—truths about who you are, who He is, and what you can accomplish with His strength. It teaches you how to make righteous choices based on those eternal truths.13 It's also important to know what For the Strength of Youth does not do. It doesn't make decisions for you. It doesn't give you a “yes” or “no” about every choice you might ever face. For the Strength of Youth focuses on the foundation for your choices. It focuses on values, principles, and doctrine instead of every specific behavior. The Lord, through His prophets, has always been guiding us in that direction. He is pleading with us to “increase [our] spiritual capacity to receive revelation.”14 He is inviting us to “hear Him.”15 He is calling us to follow Him in higher and holier ways.16 And we are learning in a similar way every week in Come, Follow Me. We are proud to have fed millions of people and provided more than 15.7 billion dollars in aid. Our faith inspires us to be an organization built on compassion, and motivated by love. Our mission is to bring relief to the poorest of the poor in the countries where we serve. We strive to reflect God's unconditional love. It's a sacrificial love that embraces all people regardless of race or religion. We believe that we can show His love by serving the “least of these” on this earth as Christ challenged us to do in Matthew 25. Elder Christofferson's talk “The Sealing Power” is a great lesson in what “sealing” really means in the context of priesthood ordinances. Here is a question to consider as you study: How does the knowledge that the sealing power also applies to other ordinances you've participated in - or will participate in - change the way you think about those ordinances? Elder Christofferson speaks so lovingly of our belonging in the gospel of Jesus Christ in his talk “The Doctrine of Belonging.” Here are some questions to consider as you study: How can you root out racism and prejudice in your life? Daily Prophet: Talks from leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints
The doctrine of belonging comes down to this for each of us: I am one with Christ in the gospel covenant.
Elder Christofferson teaches that the doctrine of belonging includes welcoming diversity, being willing to serve and sacrifice, and knowing the Savior's role.
In this brief episode, we're going to do something a little different. Listen to a quick clip from Elder Christofferson called, "Is There a Place for Me?" and ponder what we can do to 1) Reach out more to people who are different than us, and 2) Commit ourselves to be included. If you'd like to watch the clip yourself or share it with others, you can find it right here: Is There a Place for Me You can also listen to Elder Christofferson's talk, "The Doctrine of Belonging" from October 2022 General Conference. The True Order Of Identity and Self-Reliance Elder Christofferson highlights President Marion G. Romney's focus on the spiritual principle of self-reliance in all things, including emotional and spiritual self-reliance. This is in stark contrast to Ibram Kendi's fight against self-reliance, personal growth, and meritocracy. Another hierarchy Elder Christofferson relays is that of the two great commandments. He also goes over the hierarchy of Identity using President Russell M. Nelson's words which are a strong theme of the Brethren. This Identity Hierarchy is crucial, which lowers the value of such identities and labels given thru sexual orientation, race, gender, and more. Website - www.cwicmedia.com
I loved talking about Elder Christofferson's talk “Our Relationship with God.” Here are some questions to consider as you study: When have you felt betrayed by God when a certain blessing hasn't come when you thought it would? How can you trust in the Lord and not in outcomes? How do you get close to God in times of disappointment and struggle? What is the Lord telling you? What questions do you want to study further? Elder Christofferson guides us through the noise of adversity to the signal of our relationship with Christ and teaches us not to be victims. Using the examples of Job, Abraham, Joseph of Egypt, and Joseph Smith as they use their adversity to strengthen their relationship with the Lord. He quotes the Lord, "Wilt thou condemn me, that thou mayest be righteous?” When certain adversity strikes we have the option of growing in faith or becoming bitter trying to justify our position. Faith = Trust There is an attack on personal responsibility. Website - https://www.cwicmedia.com

It also features an interview with Mormon Battalion Historic Site leaders, President Brent L. Top and Sister Wendy C. Top. My name is Kurt Francom and today I have the opportunity to be in beautiful downtown Salt Lake City with and really, I'm across the world and we'll explain that in just a minute. But, let's start with you, Tom. I'm in the home of Tom Christofferson. How are you? Tom: Very well, thank you. Thanks for joining us. LS: Yeah, well, I'm excited to have this opportunity. And, mainly this interview came to be as you release your book, "That We May Be One, a Gay Mormons Perspective on Faith and Family" and you've been on the interview circuit for that. Tom: It's been an interesting journey. LS: I bet it's been very fulfilling to share your faith through, through this method. Tom: It has been a unique opportunity to be able to talk about my feelings about the Savior and the journey that I feel I have been led along. LS: Yep, obviously we'll get the, the obvious things out of the way. So, your last name is Christofferson and you are Elder Christofferson's brother. Tom: And he is my brother. LS: Oh, that's right. You are becoming more and more famous through this, these interviews. Tom: So, we are a family of five sons. He is the oldest and I'm the youngest. LS: Nice. I'm the youngest too, so I can, I can empathize with that. That's right. That's right. And now, and we'll get into your story in the book a little bit, but also interviewed the other member or introduce the other members that are part of the interview. So, we're going as far as Australia to talk with President David Checketts. How are you a President Checketts? Checketts: I'm doing well. LS: Good. And now you don't live in Australia? I think many people recognize your name here in Utah, but you generally live in Connecticut. Is that right? Checketts: Yes.

As part of our series on meetings with Mormon General Authorities, we interview Meg and Jake Abhau as they relay the story of their September 2013 meeting with Mormon Apostle Elder D. Todd Christofferson. Meg and Jake appeared on episodes 508-510 of Mormon Stories discussing their experiences in early 2013 when their 13 year old son, Jon, came out to them as gay while they were living as committed, orthodox Mormons. During this period Meg and Jake met Tom Christofferson, brother of Mormon Apostle D. Todd Christofferson. At the time Meg and Jake met Tom he was an excommunicated gay Mormon man living in a committed relationship for over 18 years. After hearing the Abhau’s story, Tom graciously offered to arrange a meeting between them and his brother, Elder D. Todd Christofferson. In this episode Meg and Jake recount in detail their 1+ hour with apostle D. Todd Christofferson, which included: Elder D. Todd Christofferson acknowledging that the LDS Church may not be a safe place for our LGBT youth, Elder Christofferson acknowledging to Meg and Jake that personal revelation trumps revelation from Mormon leadership (but that he would never be able to admit this publicly to church members), and Meg informing Elder Christofferson that he and other LDS leadership had/have “blood on their hands” for the way that they have mishandled LGBT issues, contributing to a modern wave of LGBT youth suicides. Meg and Jake also express their disappointment with Elder Christofferson’s role in speaking as the representative for the LDS church during the November 2015 policy decision denouncing same-sex couples as apostates, and disallowing their children from being baptised into the Mormon church. They also discuss their respective decisions to leave the Mormon church after decades of orthodox membership.
