An old-fashioned scavenger hunt, using modern technology, sends teams traveling around town next week in search of the most clues to win.Haverhill Exchange Club's annual Hillie Hunt offers prizes for first, second and third place as well as for best Halloween costume. There's also an after-party and 50/50 raffle. Exchange Club member Michael Joy, a recent guest on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program explains participants will be using a phone app.“You just log into the app and then the questions start to pop up. You can do trivia questions. You can do GPS questions—everyone has to be recorded on the app. Then we have the Command Central, which this year will be at the Bradford Country Club, and they will be looking at who is getting what for points. (The app) does a lot of the work for you, which is great,” he explains.Joy says the annual Hillie Hunt is organized by a number of Haverhill Exchange Club Committees, including one for the after-party, one for sponsorships and one for creating the clues.“And, the Clue Committee has to keep everything very super-secret. They get together separately and they think of 40 to 50 clues to find, and the point of the game is to get as many of the items right and not to try to get them done too quickly. You don't want to have people racing around town and getting into accidents,” he explains.Admission for scavenger hunt teams or by the car, up to six people, is $200 and includes entrance to an After Party at Bradford Country Club, featuring heavy hors d'oeuvres, cash bar, DJ, prizes and more. The hunt takes place Friday, Oct 27, between 5:30 and 10 p.m. Tickets are available online at givebutter.com/HillieHunt. A portion of the proceeds benefiting the Michael B. Christensen Community and Family Support Center.Joy says the timing of the Hillie Hunt works out well for the Halloween season.“It's great, in a way, for parents, especially for kids, because they have to go trick-or-treating the next night. It's sort of their night out, before they take the kids out,” he says.Support the show

The wearing of the green and all things Irish will be on display when the Haverhill Exchange Club holds its 21st Annual Rick Barry St. Patrick's Day Breakfast.Exchangites Ron Carpenito and Kerrianne Petalidas discussed the upcoming fun for a good cause during a live appearance last week on WHAV's “Win for Breakfast” program. Carpenito says a lot of work goes into the event.“Probably the biggest highlight of this event is the continuing saga of St. Patrick's and this special super-secret video that we make every year that really incorporates a lot of Haverhill's own favorite faces and newcomers. Things like that, to kind of like laugh at ourselves and have a little bit of fun.” Petalidas says event's anniversary is influencing prizes.“We actually have some great raffles which you'll usually find the theme of the day, of course on this particular one where it's our 21st, is birthday themes. You know, it's well known in the community, but if you have not been, I encourage you to attend this year's.”Despite the amusing elements, Petalidas says the event has a very serious purpose.“So this particular one, a lot of the funds raised at this program, it's one of our largest fundraisers, a lot of that goes to our local child abuse prevention center. So, we do fund that with proceeds from this, but we do have several other events throughout the city that we put on for the greater good of the community. We focus on Americanism, our veterans and we do a lot with child events and child abuse prevention.”Proceeds benefit the Michael B. Christensen Community and Family Support Center, part of Greater Lawrence Community Action Council. Christensen was a member of the Haverhill Exchange Club, who passed away in 2001.The 21st Annual Rick Barry St. Patrick's Day Breakfast takes place Friday March 17, at Haverhill Country Club, 58 Brickett Lane, Haverhill. 1) Gathering in Groups (Small and Large)Acts 2:42-47 42 And they devoted themselves to the apostles' teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers. 43 And awe came upon every soul, and many wonders and signs were being done through the apostles. 44 And all who believed were together and had all things in common. 45 And they were selling their possessions and belongings and distributing the proceeds to all, as any had need. 46 And day by day, attending the temple together and breaking bread in their homes, they received their food with glad and generous hearts, 47 praising God and having favor with all the people. And the Lord added to their number day by day those who were being saved. Hebrews 10:23-25 NIV 23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. 24 And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds, 25 not giving up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but encouraging one another—and all the more as you see the Day approaching. Colossians 3:15-16 NIV 15 Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful. 16 Let the message of Christ dwell among you richly as you teach and admonish one another with all wisdom through psalms, hymns, and songs from the Spirit, singing to God with gratitude in your hearts. 1 Corinthians 14: 26 NIV 26 What then shall we say, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each of you has a hymn, or a word of instruction, a revelation, a tongue or an interpretation. Everything must be done so that the church may be built up. 2)Going and Growing (Ourselves and Others) Matthew 28:16-20 NIV 16 Then the eleven disciples went to Galilee, to the mountain where Jesus had told them to go. 17 When they saw him, they worshiped him; but some doubted. 18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.” 3) Giving Generously (To What the Lord Cares About) 1 John 3:17-18 NIV 17 If anyone has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in that person? 18 Dear children, let us not love with words or speech but with actions and in truth. James 1:26-27 NIV 26 Those who consider themselves religious and yet do not keep a tight rein on their tongues deceive themselves, and their religion is worthless.27 Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world. What are the benefits of gathering in small groups? Why should we do both? What does Biblical Discipleship look like? What is one thing you can do this week to begin (or continue) to walk that out? The content of today's show won't be uplifting, at least not most of it, but it's real and necessary information not to be ignored or forgotten. We will be talking about intimate partner violence or domestic violence and abuse so sensitive ears may want to avoid listening. My colleague Mariel Fiori shared this first story with me and covered it on her radio show which is in Spanish, but I'll link to it for those who are able to listen. It's a story about a 17 year old girl, Yesmi Lara, who was severely beaten by the father of her two year old daughter. You can contribute to Yesmi Lara's Go Fund Me.Then I share from this article, Six Ways to Support a Loved One In An Abusive Relationship via NPR and talk about the impacts of trauma and abuse via the story of Melissa Lucio. False confessions are more common than you might think. More than a quarter of people exonerated by the Innocence Project in recent decades had confessed to the crime they allegedly committed, as Science reported. Then there was this important news story related to abuse in the military, Air Force General Found Guilty of Sexual Assault via NPR.Here's the info about the Women Who Serve in the Military event happening this Friday, April 29th, and the Stand Against Racism Event at YWCA Ulster County on Friday, 4/29 at 4:30PM.We take a break from the heavy to talk this weekend's NEW MOON REPORT!In the second half of the show I welcome Lara Sabanosh who grew up in various parts of the country and for a time, lived overseas in Guantanamo Bay (GTMO), where she was an education service facilitator at the Fleet and Family Support Center and became acting director in December 2013. She spent much of her adult life as a wife, mother and student, eventually completing two doctoral degrees. Six years in the making, her new book, Caged: The True Story of Abuse, Betrayal and GTMO, is an honest and introspective memoir detailing the never-before-told other side of an international, headline story, taking readers through the first twenty years of her tumultuous marriage to Christopher Tur, to events as she lived them on the night he went missing and the aftermath. Lara is currently retired from government service, residing quietly in Pensacola, Florida, surrounded by her loving family, dogs, and grand puppies.Lara shares about the difficulties and challenges faced when confronting and getting out of an abusive relationship, about the prevalence of abuse in the military and how they are failing to properly address it, and how she has learned to talk to her children about it and why that's important.Today's show was engineered by Ian Seda of Radio Kingston. Our show music is from Shana Falana !!!Feel free to email me, say hello: she@iwantwhatshehas.org** Please: SUBSCRIBE to the pod and leave a REVIEW wherever you are listening, it helps other users FIND IThttp://iwantwhatshehas.org/podcastITUNES | SPOTIFY | STITCHERITUNES: https://itunes.apple.com/us/podcast/i-want-what-she-has/id1451648361?mt=2SPOTIFY:https://open.spotify.com/show/77pmJwS2q9vTywz7Uhiyff?si=G2eYCjLjT3KltgdfA6XXCASTITCHER: https://www.stitcher.com/podcast/she-wants/i-want-what-she-has?refid=stpr'Follow:INSTAGRAM * https://www.instagram.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcast/FACEBOOK * https://www.facebook.com/iwantwhatshehaspodcastTWITTER * https://twitter.com/wantwhatshehas

— Domestic violence is not a new issue in the military, nor is it a small issue. According to a December 2019 report to Congress titled, “Military Families and Intimate Partner Violence: Background and Issues for Congress,” there were 16,912 reported incidents in Fiscal Year 2018, and “there has been little change in the rate or number of reported incidents … since FY2009.” In fact, there has been little change in more than twenty years, as there were more than 18,000 reports annually as far back as 2001. And these are just the reported incidents. The Bureau of Justice Statistics found that law enforcement is notified in only half of domestic violence incidents. Lara's experience reveals the human side of these statistics, which affect not just those on military bases, but in households all over the world. Lara M. Sabanosh reveals her emotional decades-long story of fear, deceit, and abuse that ends with the disappearance and death of her husband. Lara provides a unique perspective of being trapped in the same failed domestic abuse system that she worked for, and is sharing her experience in hopes to bring about change in the system and mindset of the abused—they are not alone. Valeria Teles interviews Lara M. Today's story is about special guest Lara Sabanosh's encounter with domestic violence and the aftermath of this all-too-common, ongoing situation in society today. Her new book, Caged, is the true never-before-told other side of an international, headline story that captivated audiences around the world in 2015. From the Today Show, NBC News, small-town newspapers, to Al Jazeera, everyone told their own version of the events that left Lara and her daughters exiled, the Commanding Officer of Guantanamo Bay's Naval Base dismissed, and her husband dead. Jan 9, 2015, Christopher Tur, a civilian worker at Guantanamo Bay's Naval Base, went missing. On Jan 11, his body was found and his wife, Lara Sabanosh, was left to deal with the aftermath of what took place at the time, and the events leading up to that moment, forcing her to examine more than twenty years of abuse and the denial and deceits that occur in all households subjected to domestic violence. Caged is a window into the toughest moments of Sabanosh's life, moments no one should ever have to endure. But she did. Sabanosh offers a call to action for reform, encourages others to seek out help, and urges those in positions of authority to assess existing procedures and question certain long-standing policies. Lara Sabanosh grew up in various parts of the country and for a time, lived overseas in Guantanamo Bay (GTMO), where she was an education service facilitator at the Fleet and Family Support Center and became acting director in December 2013. This is Derek Miller Speaking on Business. Utah is a great place to raise families, but mental health issues, alcohol and drug problems, and child abuse are realities that impact our communities. Jocelyn De La Rosa, Executive Director of The Family Support Center, tells us about the help they can provide. JOCELYN DE LA ROSA The Family Support Center is a tax-deductible nonprofit agency dedicated to strengthening families. We began in 1977 through a collaboration between the Junior League of Salt Lake City and the Utah Association for Children's Therapy. We now have three crisis childcare centers in the Salt Lake Valley providing emergency nurseries for children under the age of 12. If a parent or guardian is feeling overwhelmed or doesn't have a safe place to leave their child, they can use our safe, well-staffed locations—completely free. In addition to crisis childcare, we also offer Life Start Village which offers stable housing for single parents and their children, and we also provide reduced-cost therapy. If an individual needs mental health care, but is uninsured, we are here to help. Sessions are as low as $10 per visit. We also provide parenting education, support for single parents, and connections to resources within the community. DEREK MILLER If you or someone you know could benefit from services, or if you would like to make a financial contribution this holiday season, go to FamilySupportCenter.org. Your support could make all the difference. I'm Derek Miller with the Salt Lake Chamber, Speaking on Business. Originally Aired: December 1, 2021

Questions: What are benefits of gathering together as the church in large groups? What are the benefits of gathering in small groups? Why should we do both? What does Biblical Discipleship look like? What is one thing you can do this week to begin (or continue) to walk that out?Why do you think the God of the entire Universe would choose to change the world in and through humans? How does giving generously help display that principle?

We are very fortunate to be able to say that retired Lt. Col. Ralph Peters is a friend of the show and a frequent guest. Ralph was absolutely on fire tonight, he was GREAT. Apparently, Ralph didn’t get the memo laying out the narrative in the wake of this week’s assassination of Benazir Bhutto. She was the savior for democracy in Pakistan, right? Not according to Ralph, THE BHUTTO ASSASSINATION: NOT WHAT SHE SEEMED TO BE, "She was a splendid con, persuading otherwise cynical Western politicians and “hardheaded” journalists that she was not only a brave woman crusading in the Islamic wilderness, but also a thoroughbred democrat. In fact, Bhutto was a frivolously wealthy feudal landlord amid bleak poverty. The scion of a thieving political dynasty, she was always more concerned with power than with the wellbeing of the average Pakistani. Her program remained one of old-school patronage, not increased productivity or social decency." Ralph also talked about domestic politics in the wake of this development, his support of John McCain and his recent trip to visit to the Center for the Intrepid at the Brooke Army Medical Center. "You can donate to the Warrior and Family Support Center project via credit card at ReturningHeroesHome.org or by phone at 1-888-343-HERO.
