VINTAGE WACKY, OFF-THE-WALL SCIENCE FICTION "Give Us More Wilcox, Please!" begged award-winning sf writer-editor Terry Carr in a letter to Fantastic Adventures in the early 1950s. Princess of the Seas, which has never been reprinted since its original pulp magazine appearance, is one of Don Wilcox's most celebrated science fantasy novels. Like all Don Wilcox's best work, it is a dream extravaganza. In an era when other writers were aiming for scientific accuracy, Wilcox, who knew his science, aimed at a different effect. For Wilcox wrote Science-Fantasy, with the accent on fantasy. His tales were more like what a wide-screen, Technicolor MGM adventure epic cum sf film, starring, say, Errol Flynn, would be like if any had ever been made. If you love wacky, off-the-wall sf, then you won't be able to resist the writer the 1940s hailed as Don "the madman" Wilcox. Come along as the hero, the explorer, Stupe (for Stupendous) Smith, the cook, Gypsy Brown, whose Yiddish is as thick as her wits are nimble, plus a number of spies and moles, rocket off to the ocean world of Venus in search of a beautiful woman said to ride its sapphire seas on a horse. There you will meet, and fall in love with the princess Zaleese-Ocella-dudu-Valletha-Kolello-Enyuperra-dudu-Ferroteela-Conzanzi-Methopop Ling, her white stallion, Marble Boy, who courses the ocean waves with the same nimbleness with which he breasts its deepest depths; not to mention such unforgettable characters as the fearsome Wingmen, the Earth magnate, J.J. Wellington, whose treacherous actions unleash war between Earth and Venus, and Gooyay, the little boy who just may be the key to peace or total carnage. Be prepared for zany situations, off-beat puns, daffy characters, and plenty of laughs! (SF critics and Wilcox's colleagues of the period are divided over whether his particular approach to sf was tongue-in-cheek and intended to be funny, or merely the result of the copious quantities of whiskey needed to keep him typing at full speed to meet deadlines). No wonder, Lin Carter, the award-winning fantasist, hailed Don Wilcox's work as "Adult fairy tales!" Don Wilcox (1905-2000) was one of the most popular science fiction writers of the 1940s and early 1950s. The letter columns of Amazing, Other Worlds, Fantastic Adventuresand other Golden Age science fiction pulps are filled with letters from fans, among them soon to be Hugo Award winners like Terry Carr and Robert Silverberg, praising his work and begging for more. Most popular of all were Wilcox's novels, such as The Ice Queen, Cats of Kadenza, The Serpent Has Five Fangs, Land of Big Blue Apples. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Swords, Sorcery and Space Ships Clash in This Science Fantasy Classic! Last Days of Thronas is one of the rarest of the fabled science fiction adventures from the golden days of the pulp magazines. It appeared only in a rare 1954 issue of Science Stories and has never been reprinted. After five years of slavery, Garthanas, the Hamarian Sword and defender of his oppressed people, returns to find the woman he loves has deserted him and his best friend has betrayed him. Now Garthanas lives only for revenge. But, his plans change suddenly when he learns of a plot by Thamas I, the planet's evil ruler, to liquidate the entire Hamarian race. It's a plan Garthanas swears to stop, even if he has to fight his way through every guard and soldier in the palace. And he will! But what can one lone swordsman do when Thamas I is protected by the might of the golden Godship, relic of a now lost science? Evoking echoes of Edgar Rice Burroughs and Robert E. Howard, legendary pulp author Stuart J. Byrne's dazzling novel goes far beyond mere action to blend swordplay, feats of heroism, tangled family relationships, sexual psychology, social criticism, physics, metaphysics, and even echoes of the holocaust. This is one of the don't-miss novels from the pulps with overtones of sophistication and scientific thought rarely found there. Includes a personal introduction by the author about the origins of the book in speculations about the origin of the asteroid belt and certain biblical legends. This FuturesPast Edition is the only edition of Last Days of Thronas authorized and licensed by the SJByrne estate. --- This episode is sponsored by · Anchor: The easiest way to make a podcast. https://anchor.fm/app

Last year Tom Mitchell broke the record for the most Fantasy points scored in the season. He's on track to beat that following his 187 on Sunday afternoon. With his price back to where it started and sights set on the next record, breaking Tom Rockliff's 134.8 average from 2014, Mitchell is a set-and-forget captain week-to-week. While the Hawk's form has been outstanding, he's the most popular player in Fantasy Classic. Coaches are looking at other form players that could get them a leg up in the last round of head-to-head fixtures before Fantasy finals. There is always talk about finding a point of difference for your team to allow you to have an extra unique in your match-ups. Roy looks at his rolling best-22 players with some suggestions for each line if you'd like to take the unique route. As teams are getting set for the finals, many moves appear to be luxury as we use our allocated two trades per week. http://afl.com.au/fantasy
Some would argue that there have been plenty already, AFL Fantasy coaches will be facing their first big challenge of the season; the byes. After their sojourn in China last round, Gold Coast and Port Adelaide will enjoy their week off a little earlier than the rest of the competition. Normal rules apply for Fantasy Classic. That is, scores from the 22 on-field players will count this round and the regular two trades to use to manage squads. Appearing in more than 31 per cent of teams, Robbie Gray is the most popular Power or Suns player who will be missing this round with the bye. The rules are tweaked for rounds 12-14 to help coaches tackles the multi-bye rounds. The best 18 scores from the 22 players on-field will count for the weekly score and three trades are allowed leading into each of these rounds. It is widely considered that the bye rounds is moving time for Fantasy coaches. The aim is to come out on the other side with much better squads. Using the three trades available, coaches to be seeking to trade out cash cows and upgrade while fielding the best players possible. Working towards a 'completed' side by bringing in the players deemed to be in best 22 come season's end is preferable. Roy names up his best six defenders, eight defenders, two rucks and six forwards. It changes weekly based on form, but be believes this crew is who coaches should be aiming for. In the back line, Rory Laird, Elliot Yeo, Jake Lloyd, James Sicily, Kade Simpson and Jeremy Howe are his go-to players. The engine room includes the in-form Jack Macrae and Ed Curnow, with Fantasy stars Tom Mitchell, Patrick Dangerfield, Nat Fyfe, Adam Treloar, Stephen Coniglio and Scott Pendlebury rounding out the top eight. Max Gawn and Brodie Grundy look set to make up the preferable ruck combination. A blanket could be thrown over the forwards, but Roy thinks Isaac Heeney, Toby McLean, Lance Franklin, Robbie Gray, Tom Rockliff and newcomer to the list, Jack Darling should be in the sights when completing the crew up front. The big Eagle has been in magnificent from in recent weeks. Scores of 101, 113, 121 and a blistering 151 thanks to a six-goal haul on Sunday has put Darling in the mix as one of the desired picks according to Roy. Roy, together with Calvin and Warnie debate which players should be in Fantasy coaches' sights as they aim to improve their squads over the next month on this week's episode of the Official AFL Fantasy Podcast. Regrets. It is at this stage of the season that they start sinking in. AFL Fantasy coaches rue almost every decision they make. There are some that will spit the dummy five minutes into their first game after trading someone in because they haven't already had 10 disposals and kicked a goal. Now that we are more than a third of the way through the season, we can take a step back and can see what has worked and what hasn't. Warnie had a decision to make at the start of the season. Jack Billings or Isaac Heeney. It was a 50/50 call. Billings finished last season in cracking form but missed some of the pre-season due to a hamstring injury. The Saint played a cracking game in the final JLT Community Series match and that was enough to go with him over the consistent Heeney. If the coach of the Warne Dawgs went the other way, he's currently be sitting inside the top 500 coaches overall in Fantasy Classic. Don't get him started on other calls, but there are plenty of sob stories out there. Calvin has had a ridiculous amount of bad luck. Some of his so-called premiums have failed to fire while Roy can't get his rookies right, whether it is the right downgrade or who to play on his field. A common trend for coaches adding their two cents to the list of regrets include trading an underperforming premium to only see them regain form. Dayne Zorko deserved to be moved on, but has scored 176 and 115 in the last two weeks. Choosing to bring back Zach Merrett after missing his big scores when the opportunity was there to bring in Jack Macrae. Having Jesse Hogan as a point of difference all pre-season only to dump him just before lockout. Everyone has a story and The Traders share a few on this week's episode of the Official AFL Fantasy Podcast. Roy, Calvin and Warnie discuss their Fantasy Classic and Draft regrets but keep the glass half-full as they look towards a big round nine before the bye round tactics need to be employed.
A lot of experienced AFL Fantasy coaches will tell you to back your premiums. "They'll come good" they say. They suggest to build your team around the out of form players and it will be better in the long run. Up until this week, Dayne Zorko (MID, $576,000) owners could be forgiven for not heeding this advice. The man who averaged 114 last season was having a stinking start to the year averaging 66.5 and with his scoring gradually getting worse with a run of 72, 63, 55 and 43 up until round six. His 176 on the weekend was not only the highest score of the round, it was a reward for the 3.9 per cent of coaches who opted not to trade him out in Fantasy Classic. Already this week he is one of the most popular players traded in after dropping a total of $229,000, the most of any player this season. A breakeven of 58 means Zorko's price will be heading north of the $576,000 he is currently valued at. Zorko faces the Bulldogs this week and last time he played them at Etihad Stadium, he scored 157. Jack Billings (FWD, $551,000) appears in more than 25 per cent of teams and his coaches have been frustrated by his season to date. Scores of 64 and 66 in the past fortnight has seen his price drop to $115,000 below where he started and he is showing he is a long way from the premium selection many initially thought. The Saint averaged 94.5 last year in what was a breakout season for the 22-year-old. A key statistic is that he averaged more than 100 in St Kilda's wins last year. In their only win of 2018, he scored 123. From round seven Billings averaged 101.3 after starting the year averaging 76.6. This year he currently averaging 78.6. Could we see a turn around? Another player who coaches expected more from is Luke Parker (MID, $623,000). The Swan was seen as under-priced at the start of the year due to the fact he has averaged 110 previously. A midfield spot is wasted on a supposed premium Fantasy player who has scored 73, 80 and 73 in the last three weeks. Similar to Billings, Parker's season started slowly (no tons in first seven weeks of 2017) but improved from this point. The 26-year-old went at 108 points per game from round eight. Will history repeat? The Traders discuss whether you should hold or fold under-performing stars on this week's episode of the Official AFL Fantasy Podcast.

Thousands of eager AFL Fantasy coaches have already started piecing together their Fantasy Classic squads for the new season. The game launched last week and although we are only a handful of days in, some trends have started to appear in how coaches are picking their teams. It appears that the ruck combination of Nic Naitanui (RUC, $417,000) and Max Gawn (RUC, $605,000) is set to be the most popular to start the season. Naitanui's price attracted a 30 per cent discount due to missing all of 2017, while Gawn is under-priced based on his output last season compared to the season prior. The ruck bench of Darcy Cameron (RUC, $170,000) and Tim English (RUC/FWD, $187,000) is common as coaches believe they have the best opportunity of game time of the bargain basement options. Tom Mitchell (MID, $896,000) is the most expensive player in the competition but that hasn't stopped him from being selected by the early birds. As a lock in captain week-to-week, it will be worth spending a fair chunk of the $12,600,000 salary cap. Roy, Calvin and Warnie look at the early trends in Fantasy Classic in their first podcast since the game opened. Fantasy coaches are reeling from the news that Patrick Dangerfield has been offered a one-week suspension from the Match Review Panel. The second most selected player in Fantasy Classic was cited for his rough conduct on Matthew Kreuzer on Saturday night. If he accepts the one-match ban with an early plea, down from two weeks, 56 per cent of coaches will be making a big call this week on what to do with the Brownlow Medallist. The Fantasy finals work in the same way that the AFL ones do. The top four have a double chance this week, while fifth to eighth face elimination. Strategy for this round can be different from team to team. Curveballs like the Dangerfield suspension, injuries to key players and decisions on who to field or bench will play a key role in shaping the way in each league plays out. Not only for Classic, but for Draft leagues. Picking the right free agents in a time of need can go a long way to deciding upcoming head-to-head battles this weekend. Join Roy, Calvin and Warnie as they help you get the edge over your opponent whether you're aiming for a week off or trying to avoid elimination... or even battling it out in the plate final like Roy is! A long term injury isn't something that any footy fan likes to see, especially Fantasy coaches. Max Gawn (RUC, $588,000) is set to spend the better part of the next three months on the sidelines following surgery on his injured hamstring. Melbourne's ruckman went down in the second quarter on 32 Fantasy points, meaning the most expensive ruckman at the start of the season dropped $46,000 in value this week. The main talking point on this week's episode of the Official AFL Fantasy Podcast with The Traders is what to do with the 208cm hole left in the ruck division. The 24 per cent of Fantasy Classic owners have a few choices. One is to find the cash and trade up to the in-form Brodie Grundy (RUC, $623,000), or basically straight swap him to Stefan Martin (RUC, $582,000) who is in the form that made him the top ruckman of 2015. These are simple moves, but could be get clever with the moves and make get more points out of our squad? Roy, Warnie and Calvin discuss the Max Gawn trade and help Fantasy Draft owners replace their first round pick with someone suitable. TWO ROUNDS in and AFL Fantasy coaches are starting to get an idea of what's working and what's not. Cash cows are the backbone of your Fantasy Classic side. The cheap players are how you are able to generate the coin to upgrade players in your squad so you can get as many premiums in when it comes to the finals in the last four rounds of the year. If you don't think you have the best cash cows in your team at the moment, you need to make them a priority with your two trades this week. Roy, Calvin and Warnie work through the best moves to make ahead of round three. It has been a long, hard pre-season for AFL Fantasy coaches. Some who were seeking redemption from last year, like Warnie, started as soon as the 2016 season finished. While others have been quietly absorbing information over the last couple of months and are happy with where their squad sits. For quite a few, this is the week when the first virtual step is taken on the Fantasy training track. Teams need to be finalised before the first bounce on Friday night, but if you wish to have a Tiger or a Blue, then they'll need to be locked away before 7:20pm AEDT on Thursday night. The Traders guide you through every step of the way on the all-important final podcast ahead of round one. ...and breathe. The 27 matches of the JLT Community Series are in the can and Fantasy numbers are being crunched as we countdown to the round one lockout. The challenge of playing AFL Fantasy Classic is selecting a starting squad that will score maximum points while staying under the $11M salary cap. To be able to fit as many premium players in your squad, you need to find players who are priced below what their output will be. Pre-season matches give coaches a bit of an idea of who is under-priced based on their potential role when the real thing starts in round one. The $150K players are best suited to the bench. But if you can get away with a couple to start on your field, then they not only act as cash cows but can provide handy points both directly and indirectly. They can allow you to select more premium players, getting an edge over your opponents. Plenty of under-priced players put their hands up across the course of the JLT Series, but it's important to pick those who are likely to take that form into the pre-season. The Traders trim their extended squads as they aim to settle on the 30 they'll take into round one. Also in this week's podcast: - Game-by-game notes on Fantasy relevant players. - What we learned from the JLT Series as a whole - including who the top scoring players were, the players playing above their value and the best of the bargains to fill your bench. - How have Roy, Calvin and Warnie's teams changed over the JLT. - Social media question time. - The Fantasy Classic team of the JLT is revealed with a few surprising inclusions.
One of the biggest questions this pre-season involves which ruckmen should make their way into your AFL Fantasy Classic team. Over the last few years the top two ruckmen from the previous season haven't backed it up. Will Max Gawn be the man again? Does Brodie Grundy start 2017 how he finished last year? Or do we see Stefan Martin and Todd Goldstein bounce back? Roy, Calvin and Warnie discuss different structures for your ruck line up and how best to spend your cash.
