"In this small community, they're going to hear Beethoven's 9th Symphony in their backyard. The festival has the intention to broaden the horizons of this community through music. That's why we do what we do: to learn and grow and teach and support each other." - Shelby Laird"I've always been in love with the choral rehearsal. It is so methodical and engaging. Every step is planned out, but there's always room for flexibility and growth. That kind of stuff that is so streamlined and normal in the choral classroom is something we can really learn from in the instrumental world." - Micah LairdShelby Laird is from Hays, Kansas and has grown up entrenched in the choral world. Throughout her education she has had the privilege to work and learn from some inspiring and brilliant conductions including Dr. Judy Bowers, Dr. Anton Armstrong, Simon Carrington, Helmuth Rilling, Kim Ritzer, and Dr. Edith Copley. She was a Young Artist for the Ad Astra Music Festival in Russell, KS, in 2015 and now serves as their Festival Manager and sings on select projects. Shelby graduated from Northern Arizona University in December 2018 with a degree in choral music education. She was awarded the Outstanding Future Choral Educator of the Year for the state of Arizona in 2018 and has sung with the Sedona Academy Chamber Singers for numerous exciting projects including recording GRAMMY nominated composer Michael Hoppé's Requiem and singing backup for Josh Groban. Shelby taught choir in the Independence School District at William Chrisman High School for three years outside of Kansas City. Currently, Shelby is pursuing a master's degree in choral conducting at the University of Oregon and working with Dr. Sharon Paul. As the Festival Manager of Mammoth Film Festival™ and the Executive Director of HER VOICE, an initiative aiming to create accessibility and opportunities to emerging female filmmakers, Alexandra Chando has immersed herself in filmmaking and is dedicated to making strides in gender parity. In 2020, she launched “The Her Voice Podcast” under Kevin Connolly's Action Park Media, a podcast about getting candid and having meaningful conversations with females (and males) in the entertainment industry. Guests have included Anne Heche (Actress/Producer), Gina Girolamo (SVP Alloy Entertainment), Carolina Garcia (Director of Original Series, Netflix), Kimberly McCullough (Episodic Director), and Lesley-Ann Brandt (Actress), Erica Huggins (President, Fuzzy Door), John Scott (Episodic Director). She is also a director in the 2022 class of the Sony Pictures Television Diverse Directors Program. Alexandra Chando got her start in the entertainment industry as an actress. With over 18 years of experience on network television and film, she is no stranger to the production process. Chando first became interested in directing while filming Freeform's “The Lying Game” where she played two roles. The long days on set gave her the opportunity to become well acquainted with the technical aspects of directing. From there, Chando began shadowing directors on network television series (FOX's The Gifted, ABC's Mistresses, CBS' Scorpion), totaling over 400 on-set hours. She directed her first short, “LPM, Likes Per Minute” which was an official selection at Oscar-Qualifying HollyShorts, among other nationwide festivals. Additionally, she created, directed and produced “The Dinner Party”, an unscripted digital series. In 2019, Chando produced a short, “A Good Son”, for Suzanne Weinert, which world premiered at SXSW and was an official selection at over a dozen U.S. and International festivals. Most recently, she directed and executive produced a pilot presentation called “NSFW” alongside Executive Producer, Eric Amadio (Creator of FX's Snowfall) and Cameron Duncan (Preacher, 13 Reasons Why) as Director of Photography, with the intention of selling it as a series, and Hear the Dark, set in 1915 following 2 women on a journey to find a missing boy. Many times the needs of non disabled people are prioritized, leaving the disabled community the last to be considered. During times of crisis such as climate change, intensified storms, droughts, and fire or conflict driven migration issues, those with disabilities can lack accessibility and have some of the greatest challenges to evacuation, adaptation, and financial and structural needs. In environmental and social justice movements, when advocacy and solutions do not consider the needs of the disabled community, or those with disabilities are not invited to be at the table, those are not inclusive or just solutions. Recorded Wednesday 6/10/20 Let’s start with the basics:  black live matter.  Black people should matter just as much as any other person but the fact is, in American society, they do not. If you have any doubts about that I am including a link to an old video of Jane Elliot that you should watch.  I think all white folks should watch it, it’s only 1 minute and I wager a few of you have seen the clip before.  But it speaks volumes. The fight is not over.  We still have work to.  Vote, support businesses, make donations if you can, write to your lawmakers, sign petitions.  Not all of us are able to attend protests but there’s a lot we can do.  Most importantly educate yourself.  Listen.  I will be donating 50% of the profits from my self-published patterns for the month of June to the Southern Poverty Law Center who work to combat racism across the country.  I also personally donated to Black Girls Code, a group who supports black women in computer science.  Many of you may know that my background is in computer science, I have a BS in computer science from St Michael’s College and a MSc in Computing and Internet Studies from King’s College London, UK.  My field really, really needs diversification.  For undergrad I was one of two girls in my grade in my major and there were no black folks at all.  I know it’s changed some in the past 15 years, but our field needs to change more, so I’m putting my money where my mouth is. Also you may have noticed sound quality has changed.  My husband surprised me with a new podcast mic for mother’s day, it arrived a few weeks after and I am finally recording with it today.  Also Cally the deaf cat is here. FOs South Woods  - pattern by River Road Knits.  First handspun sweater complete!  So proud of it.  Great fit.  I want to make a sleeveless version of this. Aggregate 2 – Pattern by JimiKnits.  Knit in Tencel yarn by Artisinal yarns.  Kinda want to start another already.  Love this pattern. Go With the Flo shawl – pattern by Jennifer Lassonde Designs, knit in handspun.   WIPs Sassy Wrapitude – Part of the Wrapitude collection by Megan Williams, Just Run Knit.  Using yellow CoBaSi by Hikoo and bamboo/cotton blend dyed in peachy oranges with speckles of pink and yellow from Great Adirondack Yarn that I bought at Rhinebeck.  On section 8, lace. Laceweight Boxy – Now about 14” long Papillon – Started 2nd section.  Using Berroco Medina that I bought at The Yarn Patch in Crossville, TN last year and a gold Tencel yarn from Artisinal Yarns that I bought at Rhinebeck 2 years ago. Ankle socks – using Fish Lips Kiss heel and 52 sts, finished the first sock, just finished toe of second sock.   Out and About Rhinebeck officially cancelled for 2020. “After much deliberation, the DCSWGA board and festival planning committee have decided to cancel the in-person 2020 NYS Sheep & Wool Festival. In its place, we will host a virtual festival online. More details on that to come. If you have any questions, please contact our Festival Manager, Nena Johnson at festivalinfo at sheepandwool dot com”   Be a Helper Craftalong I will close the FO thread on June 20th.  Thank you SOOOOO much for your participation.

Hi Friend, Welcome to Episode 30 of Sally’s Performing Arts Lab Podcast.  Today I talk with Chicago’s Monday Through Friday Festival founder, Bry Liggins. I’m your SallyPAL podcast host, Sally Adams. Every week I talk to people about creating original work for a live audience. Send an email anytime to Sally@sallypal.com. Your ideas keep great conversations coming every Monday evening. Check out sallypal.com/join for the free 20-page theatre resource. It’s a glossary of live performance support you’ll need for your show. I’m working on another performing arts insert and I’m interested in knowing what creators need as a performing arts resource. Do you need more information about venues? Do you want to know how to put butts in seats on the cheap? Would you like to connect with other creators? Do you need more practical tips? If there are things you want included in the Creator’s Notebook, let me know by sending an email to sally@sallypal.com! I read them all… Every. Single. One. In this Episode you’ll hear my guest, Bry Liggins, share about a new Chicago arts festival, the Monday Through Friday Fest. Bry started out in Tulsa, Oklahoma at Holland Hall School as the shy kid in the back row. It wasn’t too long before she became a regular member of the performing arts groups as a lead actor and slam poet. Bry has a background in film, theatre, music, and spoken word. As a Louder Than A Bomb participant, Bry traveled to Chicago where she fell in love with the arts scene. We talked a little bit about the LTAB spoken word event where she and another SallyPAL guest, David KoloKolo performed original work. While studying filmmaking at Columbia College in Chicago, Bry volunteered for the multi-day Chicago International Movies and Music Festival also known as CIMMFest. Bry quickly rose to Festival Manager and started to see career options. Since graduating, she’s declared 2018, “The Year of Bry”. M-F Fest is her shot at creating opportunities for artists that connect them to resources while showcasing their work. If you want to get in on the ground floor of the M-Ffest, contact Bry Liggins at bry@m-ffest.org. The website www.m-ffest.org should be up by the end of the month. Be sure and listen until the end of the interview for Concise Advice from the Interview, and Words of Wisdom from George. Concise Advice from the Interview is a short version of tips from my guest, M-F Fest Founder, Bry Liggins. Here are 10 important bits of advice. 10 You must depend on other people to help you pursue your dreams. Don’t be afraid of collaboration. 9 To meet artists, use social media, attend local college events, or go to solo shows. Meet artists after performances to let them know you’re interested in supporting them and collaborating. 8 Starting a festival is a little like throwing a party. Starting small gives your event room to grow. 7 When you are discouraged at the success of others, turn it around and see if you can be inspired by their success and use it to propel you forward. 6 Mistakes are encouraged. You gotta fail in order to grow. 5 All art is subjective. Failure and success are as well. You are the one who evaluates all of it. 4 Start small and build from there. 3 Planning a festival or other arts event is like planning a party. 2 Be inclusive and welcoming. You’ll make friends. 1 You have the tools. You have friends. You have a room. Just do it.  Check out the blog, SallyPAL.com, for articles and podcast episodes. You can be part of the momentum that’s building. Sign up for a FREE Creator’s Notebook insert at SallyPAL.com/join. Thank you for following, sharing, subscribing, reviewing, joining, & thank you for listening. I want you to pursue your dream to have your work on the stage in front of a live audience. It’s scary, but SallyPAL is here with resources, encouragement, and a growing community of people like us.  If you’re downloading and listening on your drive to work, or falling asleep to my late night noodling like my sister does, let me know you’re out there. I want to help you create original shows for a live audience… All the performances you’ve seen on stage once lived only in someone’s imagination… Now… Just do It!.
