Send us a textAudrey Cefaly streamed into the Playwright's Spotlight after I had the pleasure of seeing the production of her play Alabaster at The Fountain Theatre in Los Angles. This is first time I've had the opportunity to talk to the playwright after seeing their work. We discuss asking big questions, making changes throughout the play's evolution, how much design is on the page, knowing the rules of the card game, and refraining from hardwiring stage directions to allow creative freedom. We also delve into stripping the work down to its core, the use of hashtags, writing poetic dialogue, stillness in storytelling and other way finders, and the use of overlapping and dual dialogue. We wrap it up writing regional, the use of hypnotic language, the purpose of an artistic statements, and her toolbox of playwright vocabulary and "How to Playwright." It's a great conversation that went on for another thirty minutes after I stopped recording. Won't let that happen again. Enjoy, and be sure to go catch Alabaster at any of the theaters below.Audrey Cefaly is an alumna of the Playwrights' Arena cohort at Arena Stage, a recipient of the Walter E. The Artistic Director of the Fountain Theatre, Stephen Sachs, is modest about his 33 years at the helm of its creative and award-winning accomplishments.   As an example, the City Council of Los Angeles, California, recognized Stephen for his contributions to the cultural life of Los Angeles.   Being an actor, director and playwright, he took the helm of a theatre organization with a vision that the theatrical experience can be a sacred space.   A place where community problems can be presented and the audience can learn new ideas and understandings about the  world around them.                               In this episode, listeners will hear about his courageous choices as an artistic leader in the Los Angeles community believing that audiences will come to enjoy the adventure of the unorthodox and innovative.   Early on for both institutions, Def West Theatre had a home at the Fountain when the idea of deaf theatre was hardly considered possible.  The rest is history, as Def West went to Broadway and great successes.  Deaf Theatre is an important centerpiece of the Fountain's history and culture.   The Fountain Theatre has produced new plays, classic American plays, plays from around the world and was honored by becoming the home of South African Playwright Athol Fugard's many world premiers.   As we slide forward into 2023, Stephen Sachs reminds us that all of us are changed by the pandemic and that we are reassessing.  This is true for theatre stages, and important institutions like the Fountain Theatre, that will be finding through their artistry ways to help all of us move forward.   To Contact and for program information, Email:  Info@fountaintheatre.org

If I Forget @ Fountain Theatre 8 out of 10 - A Good Show! LA Theatre Bites Recommended! July 23 – Sep 10, 2022 In the final months before 9/11, liberal Jewish studies professor Michael Fischer has reunited with his two sisters to celebrate their father's seventy-fifth birthday. Each deeply invested in their own version of family history, the siblings clash over everything from Michael's controversial scholarly work to the mounting pressures of caring for an ailing parent. As destructive secrets and long-held resentments bubble to the surface, the three negotiate—with biting humor and razor-sharp insight—how much of the past they're willing to sacrifice for a chance at a new beginning. IF I FORGET tells a powerful tale of a family and a culture at odds with itself.

In this episode of "A Conversation With," I sat down with Clarissa Thibeaux that plays the role of Bree Solano on the new Netflix hit series Genteflied. Clarissa also shared how she got her start as an actress. Classica Thibeaux BIO Dynamic actress Clarissa Thibeaux has positioned herself as a one-to-watch. In the upcoming second season of Gentefied, Thibeaux will be making her Netflix debut as Bree Solano, a successful queer advertising executive specializing in finding emerging artists. She commands the boardrooms with a suave attitude, and she'll charm you into buying seeds during a drought. Initially, Thibeaux broke ground portraying one of the few black LGBTQ+ characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU). First introduced in the second season of Hulu's hit action-drama "Runaways," Thibeaux can be seen starring as Xavin, a natural shape shifter who can alter her appearance at will. "Runaways," which is part of the MCU, follows a group of teenagers who band together and run away from their homes after finding out their parents are super-villains in disguise. The teenagers must come together in order to atone for their parent's actions and discover the secrets of their origins. Season 3 of the series premiered on December 13, 2019. Born and raised in Northern California, Thibeaux had dreams of becoming an entertainer from a young age. She studied Theatre Arts with an emphasis in Performance at San Diego State University. Upon obtaining her degree, Thibeaux had a slew of short films and regional commercials already under her belt. She made the move to Los Angeles where she booked her first big project on Amazon's "Bruno and Earlene Go To Vegas" where she played a rookie cop named Cookie. Additional credits include: Hulu's "Flight 666," "Ice Sharks," the short films "Soul Survivor," "Other Loving," and the Fountain Theatre's award-winning production of "Hype Man: A Break Beat Play." When she isn't on set, Thibeaux enjoys spending time with her dog Elphia, watching movies, hiking, and learning to knit. In these Covid days, Thibeaux has taken every necessary precaution to stay healthy. On the charity front, she's involved with the Cancer Support Community LA, which provides free activities, support groups, and counseling to those who have been impacted by cancer. As well as Pablove, a foundation that both raises money for groundbreaking medical advances in childhood cancer and helps children fighting cancer to have a creative voice through the art of photography. She also loves to support charities pertaining to the foster system, underprivileged youth, and environmental development. Thibeaux is based in New York City. We're so excited to finally share our conversation with the brilliant actor Matthew Hancock, who is currently leading the charge back to theaters by starring in the West Coast premiere of the award-winning play An Octoroon at The Fountain Theatre. Yes, people: plays are back, and we couldn't be more thrilled to celebrate Matthew's tremendous success and commemorate this special occasion. Coming to us straight from preview performances, Matthew tells Roger and Lovell all about the demands of rehearsing a play behind masks, the protocols required to bring a live play (!) in person (!!) to audiences today, and why intimate theater in Los Angeles is more vital than ever. Recently spotlighted in the New York Times, this landmark production of An Octoroon (written by none other than Roger and Lovell's college classmate, the transcendent Branden Jacobs-Jenkins!) runs until September 19, 2021, so do not miss it! Go on Instagram to follow Matthew at @imatthewhancock, and learn everything you can about the folx highlighted in this week's Gayborhood Watch: civil rights icons Bayard Rustin and Marsha P. I got an education from a Nuyorican––right there, I’d never heard the term before. Felix Angel Solis is a revelation––on the Fountain Theatre stage as Eddie, in the Pulitzer Prize-winning, The Cost of Living, where he blew my mind and moved me beyond compare (I immediately set out to track him down), to his thoughts on acting––actors as musicians, the script the sheet music, “actioning,” “referencing,” not giving what they’re looking for, offering something different. Seeking characters who care about something. All explained with fascinating analogies to life. His twice a day meditation practice, where thoughts are encouraged to run and play… adaptive energy, how we let go. New York theatre, the Labyrinth, The Cherry Lane, being directed by Philip Seymour Hoffman, twice. Getting tracked down not just by me, but Pacino, too. Crossing over to film and TV… series regular work on Law & Order, The Good Wife, The Following, NYC22 for Jane Rosenthal and Robert DeNiro; Subway Token Films, his joint production company, whose first film made the Tribeca Film Festival––street level miracles––saying yes to everything, and no to nothing, And yes he said to coming to perform for us at Women Who Write. As passionate as Felix is In performance is as passionate as I am to watch him do it, on any medium. Warm, humble, spiritual, insightful, resourceful, instinctual, inspiring and delightful, This time, this man, is so rich, I’ll be rewatching this more than once. Felix Solis is a revelation as an actor and as a human. Mind blown watching him on stage, mind blown sharing this life experience. http://annettbone.com/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/When-Music-Drives-Movement.png () You dance totally different if you are aware of the history of the dance form. It changes the dance or music to something that is something significantly deeper and heavier. That is why sometimes you can do a lot less, because it means more. -Ethan Margolis, paraphrased on the importance of being immersed in the dance form historyFeature Presentation: I had an educational and entertaining conversation with Ethan Margolis, director and guitarist of the upcoming Forever Flamenco: Family Gypsy Song, as he dispels the myths around the origins of Flamenco music and dance, things to observe if you're not familiar with Flamenco dance, the people that inspire him, and more.
