On this week's show, the panel begins by dissecting Longlegs, director Osgood Perkin's viral horror movie starring Nicolas Cage that's sweeping the box office. Aided by a clever marketing campaign, Longlegs is undoubtedly the summer's “you gotta see it” horror flick, but does the Silence of the Lambs copycat live up to the hype? Then, the three jump (or is it herkie?) into Greg Whiteley's latest docuseries, America's Sweethearts: Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, which follows the Texan squad from auditions through the grueling NFL season, revealing a quietly devastating portrait of worker exploitation and modern femininity along the way. Finally, the trio is joined by Slate critic Laura Miller to parse through an extreme controversy in the literary world: Last week, Alice Munro's daughter, Andrea Skinner, published an Op-Ed in the Toronto Star detailing the sexual abuse she suffered as a young girl at the hands of her stepfather – abuse that the Nobel Prize-winning author had known about, but chose to ignore. (Read Laura's essay for Slate; check out the Star's reported piece.) Today, Asif and Ali discuss the new Netflix docuseries ‘Wrestlers' (1:30). The guys discuss the director of the show, Greg Whiteley, and his other shows ‘Last Chance U' and ‘Cheer'. They then discuss the main characters in the show, including former wrestler Al Snow, talk radio celebrity Matt Jones and breakout star . They discuss their thoughts on the show and how the show is really about showmanship, devotion to craft and putting everything on the line for a dream.    Then, since a character in ‘Wrestlers' has what appears to be a seizure in one episode (mild spoiler), the guys then discuss seizures and pseudoseizures (24:40). Asif reviews the definition of seizures and epilepsy. He then goes over first aid for seizures and the dangers of brain injury with prolonged seizures (status epilepticus). In the show, the seizure appears to be precipitated by a stressful event. Asif explains that stress in and of itself does not really cause seizures, but it can be related to pseudoseizures aka non-epileptic events. These are a psychogenic type of disorder, also called conversion disorder or functional neurologic disorder. Asif talks about how these are often related to underlying stress or anxiety and how they can be related to a past history of psychological trauma. He describes how their appearance can be different from actual seizures and he also explains how a test (EEG) can help to differentiate these. Asif then goes over the treatment for this disorder.    The opinions expressed are those of the hosts, and do not reflect those of any other organizations. In the past year or so, Latter-day Saints have been showcased in a bevy of TV shows and documentaries — from “Under the Banner of Heaven,” about a grisly 1980s murder case, to “LulaRich,” about a pair of multilevel marketers. Recently, moviemakers tackled the purported killings of two children by extremist members in Idaho and a series based on the true-crime documentary “Abducted in Plain Sight.” Why this sudden interest in the church and some of its more bizarre episodes? On this week's show, Latter-day Saint filmmakers Jared Hess, who co-wrote and directed “Napoleon Dynamite” and “Murder Among the Mormons,” and Greg Whiteley, who directed “New York Doll,” “Mitt” and “Cheer,” discuss the industry and its fascination with Mormonism.

Ted Dintersmith discusses his book What School Could Be: Insights and Inspiration From Teachers Across America (2018) on episode 262 of Teaching Learning Leading K12, an audio podcast for educators. Ted is a successful venture capitalist with an eye on changing school. His four-decade career spans technology, business, public policy, and education philanthropy. He earned a PhD in engineering from Stanford University, lead a high tech start-up, and ranked as the top venture capitalist in the US for the years 1995- 1999. Ted organized and funded Most Likely to Succeed, a feature-length documentary on education that was directed by Greg Whiteley. The film has been an official selection of thirty major film festivals, including Sundance. To date, more than 7,000 communities in some 35 countries around the globe have screened the film, using it as a resource to spark discussion and inspire change. He also co-authored with Tony Wagner a book with the same title, analyzing our education system. Last year, Ted’s new book What School Could Be was released, which chronicles his road trip to visit 200 schools across all 50 states during the 2015-2016 school year. He was intent on discovering inspiring educators, and that’s exactly what happened. What School Could Be presents stories of teachers in ordinary circumstances doing extraordinary things. It’s has been a top-selling education book since its release. Held at Miami University in Oxford, OH, the conference featured researchers, educators, trainers, and consultants who spoke to a packed room of more than 50 seasoned cleaning and restoration professionals.   The conference, produced by John Downey, the executive director of CIRI, and Steven Spivak, PhD, the chair of the Science Advisory Council (SAC) of CIRI, began Tuesday morning with a keynote address delivered by Dr. Greg Whiteley, "Anticipating Threats to Human Health."   That keynote address kicked off a slate of 21 "laser-focused, lightning presentations," as coined by Dr. Spivak, along with six Q&A sessions peppered throughout the conference. A highlight of the event was an impassioned dinner speech by CIRI Chairman Jim Harris, Sr. He surprised attendees with some blunt comments on changing the industry for the better.   One component that made this a unique event was the peer review process for the presentations. Several were based on original research, including studies conducted specifically for the symposium. "The CIRI Science Symposium is one huge piece of the puzzle of partnering science and cleaning," Downey said. "CIRI is growing and the support we are receiving is encouraging. I'm sure we will see positive, measurable improvements in the industry, protecting health of all building occupants globally."

Ted Dintersmith says he got concerned about what he calls the collision between education and innovation a few years ago. Dintersmith says machine intelligence is advancing at an accelerating rate and schools (for the most part) are preparing kids to be good at short term memorization, replicating low level procedures and following instructions, which is exactly what machine intelligence is great at. Dintersmith thought about ways he could contribute and decided to produce a film. Most Likely to Succeed premiered in January of 2015 with Dintersmith serving as executive producer and documentarian Greg Whiteley directing. The film, which explores new ways to transform education while looking at shortcomings of our current system, has been shown at places like the Sundance Film Festival and the Tribeca Film Festival.Dintersmith is invested in finding answers to prepare our children for a dynamic world and future.Resources:www.ndplaylist.orgTwitter: @dintersmith@thecuttinged www.ndunited.org/thecuttinged

Beginning shortly after the close of his 2012 presidential bid, Mitt Romney has kept a pretty low profile. However, the recent Sundance Film Festival has forced some renewed public attention on him with the screening of the documentary, Mitt, by filmmaker Greg Whiteley, along with the film’s availability on the popular media streaming service Netflix. The film eschews politics for an intimate look at Mitt and the Romney family during both the 2008 and 2012 presidential runs. In this episode, Mormon Matters host Dan Wotherspoon is joined by political watchers McKay Coppins and John Hatch to discuss the film and the wider legacy for Mormonism created by Romney’s bids for the presidency. They talk about the film, especially the parts that show (or hint at) the Romney family's Mormonism. They also discuss the lasting--and they judge quite positive--legacy for Mormons in national politics and wider culture that is tied in some ways to Romney’s campaigns.
