With summer fast-approaching, it's important to keep yourself protected from all kinds of exposure! In this episode, Dr. Lara Varden, in-house clinician of the DNA Company is joined by Dr. Guerry Grune, PhD, P.A., the CTO and Founder of 3rd Rock Essentials. Guerry shares how his life might have been one long (part-time) endless summer if it hadn't been for three events that led him to create 3rd Rock—and change sunscreen history forever.During the summertime, it is not uncommon for us to spend more time outdoors. This comes with great benefits but also has cons when it comes to the topic of the forces of nature - the UV rays of the sun, and the emergence of bugs that are out to bite you. With this in mind, Dr. Lara and Dr. Guerry discuss ways in getting through being in the sun. First, the episode tackles how to deal with bug bites, poison ivy, hives, and other infections. These cause a variety of itches due to the toxins causing a sudden acidity on the skin. These are not entirely preventable but definitely can be soothed with the right products specifically those that contain high concentrations of zinc oxide. Dr. Lara and Dr. Guerry delve into how this substance works as a skin protectant to aid various skin conditions.Secondly, they dive into the importance of sunscreen. We often assume that higher SPF already guarantees better protection but there's more than meets the eye when it comes to fully protecting the skin from the harsh rays of the sun. They discuss the different components of sunscreen that makes it safe not just for human consumers, but for the reef as well. In fact, Dr. Guerry showcases how his formulation of sunscreen is approved by the Coral Reef Foundation.Lastly, they impart knowledge on how silver is a miracle element that contributes to better gut health. In line with this, they also share other tips on lifestyle and health in general that will allow you to be at your most optimal level of health throughout all of your planned activities. If you wish to learn more about the article mentioned by Dr. Lara Varden, you may do so by opening this link: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8835820/If you wish to learn more from Guerry Grune and 3rd Rock Essentials, you may do so through the following links:Their website at https://3rdrockessentials.com/Their Instagram Account at https://www.instagram.com/3rdrockessentials/Try out 3rd Rock Essentials at a discounted rate by fulfilling your purchase through this link https://3rdrockessentials.com/discount/DNA17 or inputting the code “DNA17” for an additional 17% off from May 24 (12AM ET) to May 28 (12PM ET) on top of the Memorial Day discount!▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬Keep yourself up to date on The DNA Talks Podcast! Extreme sun exposure leads to tolls on your skin and can eventually lead to greater risk of skin cancer and other skin diseases. With that, the vast majority is advised to use sunscreen, but is it enough to combat the ultraviolet rays of the sun?In this episode, Kashif is joined by the CTO and Founder of 3rd Rock Essentials, Guerry Grune, PhD, PA. Guerry shares how his life might have been one long (part-time) endless summer if it hadn't been for three events that led him to create 3rd Rock—and change sunscreen history forever. The first was the melanoma doctors found in 1992 on his long-time surfing partner—only 22 at the time. Seeing his friend's surfing career cut short (though luckily, not his life) was Guerry's first bitter taste of the unforgiving reality of overexposure to—or under protection from—the sun.Guerry expresses how he after a formula that guaranteed full, long-lasting protection from UVA and UVB rays without endocrine disruptors or other toxic ingredients. But even that wasn't enough. He wanted a product that was good for the skin—to make it healthier, younger, stronger. This was due to his knowledge that existing sun protection products only protect the body from UVB, and not from UVA.Kashif and Guerry also discuss how ingredients make the difference such as glycerin, and how working with these ingredients allowed 3rd Rock Essentials to branch out from sun protection into using silver as an antibacterial and antimicrobial ingredient which does great wonders for the body. Here are the highlights for this episode:00:00 Introduction02:31 Background of Dr. Guerry Grune08:45 The Truth About SPF and Overexposure12:59 Glycerin-based SPF and How it Differs from Other Sunscreen17:23 UVA and UVB Light Explained 20:23 The Truth About SPF 50 and Beyond24:40 Alcohol Based Sunscreen and A False Sense of Security25:45 Neutrolene and Silver Oxide32:04 Functions of Sliver40:07 Neosporin and Nutrasporin43:27 3rd Rock Essentials and Dealing with Other Health ImplicationsIf you wish to learn more from Guerry Grune and 3rd Rock Essentials, you may do so through the following links:Their website at https://3rdrockessentials.com/Their Instagram Account at https://www.instagram.com/3rdrockessentials/Try out 3rd Rock Essentials today at https://3rdrockessentials.com/collections/all-items▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬▬Keep yourself up to date on The DNA Talks Podcast! Welcome to The Nonlinear Library, where we use Text-to-Speech software to convert the best writing from the Rationalist and EA communities into audio. This is: Twitter Polls: Evidence is Evidence, published by Zvi on September 20, 2022 on LessWrong. Follow-up to: Law of No Evidence Recently, there was some debate about a few Twitter polls, which led into a dispute over the usefulness of Twitter polls in general and how to deal with biased and potentially misleading evidence. Agnus Callard is explicitly asking the same question I asked, which is the opposite of ignoring sample bias: What is accounting for the difference? Sample selection is definitely one of the explanations here. One can also point to several other key differences. My poll asks about you, Patrick asks about how others seem. My poll asks about struggle, Patrick asks about stability. My poll asks about a year versus a point in time, a potential flaw. My poll asks about now, Patrick asks about since pandemic onset. None of this is well-controlled or ‘scientific' in the Science sense. No one is saying any of this is conclusive or precise. What is ‘bad' evidence if it isn't weak evidence? Adam's theory here is that it is misleading evidence. That makes sense as a potential distinction. Under this model: Weak evidence induces a small Bayesian update in the correct direction. Bad evidence can induce an update in the wrong direction. Usually, people with such taxonomies will also think that strong evidence by default trumps weak evidence, allowing you to entirely ignore it. That is not how that works. Either something has a likelihood ratio, or it doesn't. The question is, what to do about the danger that someone might misinterpret the data and update ‘wrong'? I love that the account is called ‘Deconstruction Guide.' Thanks, kind sir. Whether or not this ‘depends on the poll' depends on what level of technically correct we are on, and one can go back and forth on that several times. The fully correct answer is: Yes, some info. You always know that the person chose to make the poll, and how many people chose to respond given the level of exposure, and the responses always tell you something, even if the choices were ‘Grune' and ‘Mlue,' ‘Yes' and ‘Absolutely,' or ‘Maybe' and ‘Maybe Not.' Remember that if any other result would have told you something, then this result also tells you something, because it means the result that would have told you something did not happen. That doesn't mean it helps you with any particular question. Anyway, back to main thread. Getting into a Socratic dialog with a Socratic philosopher, and letting them play the role of Socrates. Classic blunder. I certainly want to know the extent to which the world is full of lunatics. Adam Gurri's new claim has now narrowed to something more reasonable, that citing a Twitter poll as representative even of some subgroup marks you as foolish. We can agree that taking a Twitter poll, not adjusting for sample bias, and drawing conclusions is foolish. Saying it equates to a subgroup that is similar to the group polled still requires dealing with response bias and all that, but mostly seems fine. Adjusting for the nature of your sample should render the whole thing fine in any case. You can also find good information in a Twitter poll by comparing its results to another Twitter poll using the same account (and same retweets, ideally). The difference between the two is meaningful. This can be a difference between questions or wordings, or a difference over time, or something else. Rules of Evidence Aristotle is indeed wise. He points to the important distinction between evidence, as in Bayesian evidence or a reason one might change one's mind or one's probabilities, and the rules of evidence in a given format of debate or discourse. In a court of law, some forms of Bayesian evidence are considered irrelevant or, even more extremely, prejudicial, exactly because they should cause one to update their probabi...

We explore every author's worst nightmare as writer Penny Love returns to Pratchat and finds the barrier between reality and fiction getting all wibbly-wobbly in Terry Pratchett's 1988 short story, "Final Reward". After a particularly bad row with his girlfriend Nicky - and a pint of wine - author Kevin Dogger decides to kill off the protagonist of his best-selling fantasy series. The next morning, Erdan the Barbarian appears on Dogger's doorstep with the milk. He was, after all, promised a final reward: an eternity of carousing in the halls of his creator... Content note: the story "Final Reward" contains discussion of (fictional) suicide. If you or anyone you know needs help, use the Wikipedia list of crisis lines to find one local to you. Written for the short-lived roleplaying magazine G.M., "Final Reward" is Pratchett's go at the age-old tradition of writers writing about writers. But in true Pratchett form, it's not just about that... Hailing from around the time of Wyrd Sisters and Pyramids, but "tinkered with" before appearing in A Blink of the Screen, it depicts an author ill at ease with the real world and human relationships - by all accounts not much like Pratchett himself at all. And then there's the way it ends... What did you think of this one? Have you ever written a character you'd like to meet in person? Would you swap places with them? And is this a dig at any real fantasy authors, and we've missed the joke? Join in the conversation using the hashtag #Pratchat58 on social media. Guest Penelope Love is a writer best known for her roleplaying game work, especially with Chaosium for Call of Cthulhu, including the upcoming Victorian London campaign she mentions this episode. She previously joined us for #Pratchat45, "Hogswatch in Grune", discussing the quite Lovecraftian "Twenty Pence with Envelope and Seasonal Greeting". Penny is also part of Campaign Coins, who as well as making gorgeous metal coins for use with tabletop games, publish Penny's comic fantasy short story collections about “The Three Dungeoneers”, which you can find here. Penny is on Twitter as @PennyLoveWrites, or you can follow @CampaignCoins for more on their projects. As usual, you can find notes and errata for this episode on our website. As previously advised, due to some technical difficulties - and not a time machine, to Ben's disappointment - the next episode to be released will be #Pratchat57, discussing the third Long Earth novel, The Long Mars, with Joel Martin. Look for it in the Pratchat podcast feed on August 25. Next month in #Pratchat59, we're discussing The Science of Discworld III: Darwin's Watch with science and fiction writer, Dr Kat Day! And after that, in October, it's finally time for another general questions episode, #Pratchat60. This is the perfect opportunity to ask us about books you missed first time round, or general questions about Discworld, Pratchett, us and the show! Send in your questions for either of those episodes via social media (using the appropriate hashtag), or send us an email at chat@pratchatpodcast.com.

Surprise! In the great Australian tradition of Christmas in July, Liz and Ben are joined by writer and literary horror fan Penelope Love to discuss Pratchett's short story "Twenty Pence, With Envelope and Seasonal Greeting", first published on the 16th of December, 1987. It's Christmas Eve, 1843, and the driver of a missing Mail Coach is discovered lying in the snow in Wiltshire. A local doctor determines he is scared out of his wits, but nonetheless records the coachman's horrifying tale of passing through a weird rectangular portal. He and his passengers strayed from the world we know into others filled with nightmares: strangely glittering snow, terrifyingly flat London streets, monstrous giant animals and nonsensical language... Written in the style of Victorian horror fiction from authors like M R James, H P Lovecraft and A C Doyle*, with a side order of Dickens, this story was inspired when Pratchett glanced at his shelf full of Christmas cards. Despite the ridiculous premise, he plays it totally straight, with phrases that could have come straight from The Call of Cthulhu and other works of the era he's emulating. But in 1987, people still sent Christmas cards. Does the story still work now, when we have to think a bit harder to recall the kinds of things printed on those ineffable pieces of cardboard? Can we be spooked and made to laugh at the same time? And does the old-school "horrors humankind was not meant to know" genre still make our blood run cold in this age of smartphones, satellite imagery and Google? Use the hashtag #Pratchat45 on social media to join the conversation! Guest Penelope Love is a writer best known for her short fiction, and her work on roleplaying games, most notably Chaosium's Call of Cthulhu, based on the works of H P Lovecraft. His 22-year-old surfing buddy came down with melanoma, and that is when Guerry knew he needed to find a better way to protect skin from the sun. Guerry (pronounced “Gary”) began researching sunscreen products and was appalled by what he found - all the available sunscreens pretty much sucked. In fact, it was worse than that: sunscreen products still are not doing what they say they do and are counterproductive - even causing some shocking health problems. Except for one brand - a sunscreen Guerry developed through his knowledge and research.
