Dr. Guerry Grune. Guerry is a surfer and chemical engineer. His surfer life revealed the dangers of excessive sun exposure and his chemistry knowledge revealed the dangers of toxic chemicals and hormone disruptors in cosmetics. this inspired him to figure a way to make a safe sunscreen that actually worked, applied easily, and lasted in the water. Through his efforts he developed such a product and named it "3rd Rock Sunblock" with the help of his 13 year old daughter. Eventually the creation of additional products with the same standards bloomed into 3rd Rock Essentials. this episode is sort of a geeky product review. Zinc oxide has been used for many years in the pig industry to reduce diarrhoea in post-weaned pigs. However, as a result of potential risks to the environment and in line with regulations set by the European Union (EU), therapeutic use of zinc oxide was banned across the EU in the summer of 2022. The UK Veterinary Medicines Directorate granted an extension in the UK last year, allowing the industry to use up any product purchased before the authorisation expired in June 2022. Current supplies of zinc oxide are expected to be exhausted this summer (2023). In this episode, we hear about research that AHDB has conducted with SAC Commercial Ltd. to understand the pros and cons of some of the alternative options available to farmers in the absence of zinc oxide.  The options reviewed through this project target pig nutrition, management and immunity. Summaries have been produced to help guide farmers and their vets and nutritionists, which include details about costs, effectiveness and the time required to implement each of the options. WELCOME to The WELLNESS FOURplay Podcast Episode 22: B.I.I. - What every Woman with Breast Implants, or considering them, MUST know! What every Woman with Breast Implants, or considering them, MUST know! We KNOW that Knowledge is the "foreplay" to your Wellness, so we want to make sure you are equipped to be your OWN Super Hero in your wellness journey! Equipping you with the KNOWLEDGE you need to have the HEALTH you so desire!  1. WHAT IS B.I.I.?  Breast implant illness (BII) is a term that some women and doctors use to refer to a wide range of symptoms that can develop after undergoing reconstruction or cosmetic augmentation with breast implants. It is also sometimes referred to as autoimmune/inflammatory syndrome induced by adjuvants (ASIA). BII can occur with any type of breast implant, including silicone gel-filled, saline-filled, smooth surface, textured surface, round, or teardrop-shaped. BII is not currently recognized as an official medical diagnosis, and there is no diagnosis code for it. It is poorly understood and hasn't been studied much as a unique condition. Implants are a foreign object placed inside of the body that our Immune Systems actively go to war with. May 2, 2019, the FDA issued a statement acknowledging breast implant illness and the systemic symptoms caused by silicone. Saline was said to be safe... WHY are they listed? The casing of the implant is SILICONE that contains: Methyl Ethyl Ketone (neurotoxin), Cyclohexanone (neurotoxin), Isopropyl Alcohol, Acetone (neurotoxin), Urethane, Polyvinyl Chloride (neurotoxin), Amine, Toluene (neurotoxin/carcinogen), Dichloromethane (carcinogen), Chloromethane, Ethyl Acetate (neurotoxin), Sodium Fluoride, Lead-based solder, Formaldehyde, Oakite (cleaning solvent), Methyl 2-cyanoacryltes, Ethylene Oxide (carcinogen), Xylene (neurotoxin) -2-Hexanone, Stearic Acid, Zinc Oxide, Phenol (neurotoxin), Benzene (carcinogen/neurotoxin), Lacquer Thinner, Epoxy Resin, Metal Cleaning Acid, Heavy metals, and more! 2. WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF B.I.I. AND POTENTIAL MIS-DIAGNOSIS THAT CAN BE MADE?  BII impacts each individual in a unique way. Symptoms can include: Joint and muscle pain, chronic fatigue, memory and concentration problems, breathing problems, sleep disturbance, rashes and skin problems, dry mouth and dry eyes, anxiety, depression, headache, hair loss, gastrointestinal problems and more. The symptoms can appear any time after implant surgery — some people develop symptoms immediately, while some develop them years later. A lot of the symptoms of BII are associated with autoimmune and connective tissue disorders, such as lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, and scleroderma. Some people who have BII also get diagnosed with a specific autoimmune or connective tissue disorder, but many do not. 3. WHY ARE WE TALKING ABOUT B.I.I.?  B.I.I. is a real illness that women with, and those thinking about, implants MUST know about. 100's of 1000's of women have already taken measures to recover from B.I.I. Marci has been working through many of the above symptoms for years, attributing them to incidents in her life: Car accidents, brain injuries, concussions, spine surgeries, full anesthesia 5 times in a 4-month span, pain medications, turning 50. Diet, exercise, sleep, heavy metal detox, mindset and Biohacking Synergy has kept her highly functional and undiagnosed, but not alleviated the symptoms she is living with. Marci's current list of symptoms: Fatigue, brain fog, memory loss, cognition problems, muscle pain and weakness, joint pain (neck, back, hands, feet, shoulder), weight problems (weight gain, bloating), inflammation, poor sleep, dry eyes with a decline in vision, low libido, headaches, ear ringing, metallic taste and dry mouth, mouth sores, sudden food intolerances, bouts of dehydration for no reason, numbness and tingling in left arm, cold and discolored feet/hands (Reynaud's Syndrome), pain and burning around left breast and underarm, depression, anxiety, mood swings, throat tickles with coughing fits, hair loss/dry hair, tingle and burning down left side of face/shoulder/arm. Thanks to prayer, resources and information showed up... Clubhouse Room Facebook Group with 140k+ members Website. The Heal is REAL Friend (personal experience & clients). Over the past 2 months, an awareness of BII has put her personally on a healing journey. 4. WHAT'S NEXT?  In many, but not all cases, surgery to remove the breast implants improves or completely resolves the BII symptoms. Explant surgery scheduled for August 4, 2021 or sooner with God's grace. How to Get Rid of Pimples, K-Beauty Style

If you want practical solutions to pimple problems, then stay tuned because today we’re covering how to get rid of pimples using K-Beauty products, tips and tricks. CONNECT WITH ME  Instagram: www.instagram.com/lauren.kbeauty  Facebook: www.facebook.com/stylestory.au  Website: www.thekoreanbeautyshow.com  Pinterest: https://www.pinterest.com.au/stylestoryau Tik Tok: https://vt.tiktok.com/ZSaHUgHL/ Download Your Free Guide to K-Beauty: https://mailchi.mp/f845eb5d20cd/guidetokbeauty Episode Summary  With so many pimple and acne solutions out there, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed. The first step is to identify the type of pimple or congestion you have before moving onto an appropriate treatment.  Whiteheads: This is your classic pimple – a raised bump, with a white head. These are the kind of pimples you get when your pores are clogged with oil, dirt, dead skin cells etc.  Pimple patches (especially the hydrocolloid ones) can be very effective against these, as they essentially suck the gunk out of them.    Blackheads: These are much like whiteheads, except that the pores don’t close up. Instead, whatever’s clogging the pore oxidises on the surface of the skin, giving it a darker colour.  Try skincare acids (eg. AHA, BHA) and clay masks to improve congestion.   Pustules: These pimples contain – you guessed it, pus.  Pustules often occur when you’re dealing with an infection and your body is producing more white blood cells. In laymen’s terms, pus is a combination of dead white blood cells and liquid related to the infection.  Spot treatments and products that can dry out the pimple are the way to go here.   Cysts: These are no fun.  Cystic pimples lie beneath the surface of your skin and are often painful.  It’s important to see a doctor or dermatologist for these, firstly to confirm that you have cystic acne, and secondly because cystic acne often requires medical assistance to fully heal.   Tried and True Pimple Fixes  Subi Perfect Pimple Patches are perfect for dealing with run-of-the-mill breakouts.  Made from 100% hydrocolloid, they are drug-free, which makes them suitable for all skin types.  While they’re most effective on whiteheads and blackheads, Perfect Pimple Patches can also work as a protective barrier on all pimple types to assist your skin’s natural healing process. As an added bonus – these patches are barely visible and ultra thin, making them perfect for pimples in hard-to-reach places like the side of your nose.  Because they’re almost invisible, they can be worn both day and night.   If you’re looking for a more traditional spot treatment, COSRX’s AC Collection Ultimate Spot Cream helps skin bounce back from acne.  This blend of Zinc Oxide, Calamine, Aloe Vera and Centella Asiatica, which work to control excess sebum and remove dead skin cells with low irritation.  For really stubborn blemishes and cysts, look no further than Mizon’s Acence Blemish Out Pink Spot.  Designed by dermatologists, this double layer spot treatment works both as an exfoliator and reduces inflammation.  After two consecutive nights of use, your problem pimples will be well on the way out.     Another Word on Acne In some cases, there is a limit to the results that skincare products alone can achieve. Particularly with cystic acne, the issue will rarely clear up on its own.  Don’t be afraid to seek medical treatment if your acne is not improving or if it appears to be getting worse. Unfortunately, the bigger and deeper the spots, the bigger the scars they will leave and those can be particularly tricky to get rid of. If they impact the deeper layers on the skin, scarring can be quite profound.  In many cases, your GP will be able to prescribe antibiotics and topical products that can help. If that doesn’t clear it up you will be looking at something even stronger like Roaccutane, which can only be prescribed by a dermatologist in Australia.  If your acne is accompanied by itchiness, then don’t rule out the possibility of fungal acne as well. Take a listen back at Episode 27 if you suspect that fungal acne might be at play. The SPF Myth Exposed & How to Shop For Safe Skin Health & Protection

While there are less direct UV rays in the winter, there is significant reflection of these rays which can still easily cause sunburn.I recommend that all of my clients wear sunscreen daily to prevent cumulative sun exposure and the resulting fine lines, wrinkles, discoloration, and even skin cancer. From the plethora of toxic and smelly sunscreens (year around) - which to choose from?Check the labels and see that they offer various SPF protection number values. You’re well aware of the sun’s damaging effects on skin: Cancer, pre-mature skin ageing, wrinkles, immune system suppression etc’… Scary stuff indeed. So if SPF- 15 is good, isn’t 100 better? Why not have SPF-500?  If you automatically think that a higher SPF number is better, you logically should be correct, but as we will see below, the answer isn’t as obvious as you might think.Let’s try to clear-up exactly what the SPF is, what the differences are between the values and how you can pick the best number for you so do not have to worry about the pesky potential harmful sunlight side-effectsand their direct correlation to aging - faster! It’s time to bust the higher SPF myth! Sunscreen for skin health. The Sun Protection Factor or SPF is utilized to measure a sunscreen products protection from UVB (Ultra Violet B) rays, the type that cause sunburn and contribute to skin cancer. SPF however does not measure how well a sunscreen will protect from UVA (Ultra Violet A) rays, which are also damaging and harmful. Dermatologists generally recommend using at least an SPF-15 or preferably a SPF-30 sunscreen for everyday use.A Sunscreen with SPF-15 protects against 93% of UVB rays, an SPF-30 protects against 97% while an SPF-50 protects against 98% (a relatively minor difference). Very high SPF numbers (such as SPF-100 and higher) are mostly marketing ploys. Most experts believe SPF-30 is enough, provided you don’t skimp, apply the proper amount and remember to re-apply for the duration of your time in the sun.The jump from SPF-15 to 30 gives you a 4% protective increase while from 30 to 50 there is only a 1% increase. Beyond this minimal increase in protection, sunscreen products with very high SPFs can also encourage individuals to neglect other important protective behaviors, like limiting their sun exposure, seeking shade whenever possible and wearing sun-protective clothing. No sunscreen, no matter how strong, can offer total protection, so especially if the product is not broad-spectrum (which will be explained below), by preventing sunburn, sunscreens with very high SPFs can create a false sense of security, prompting consumers to stay out in the sun longer.  Sun damage (for example, UVA damage) can take place without skin-reddening doses of UV radiation, and even the best sunscreens should be considered just one vital part of a more comprehensive sun protection regimen. You’re Looking For Broad-SpectrumIt is very important to keep in mind that SPF ratings only apply to UVB protection. According to the American Academy of Dermatology, you should look for a sunscreen that has an SPF of 30 or higher that provides broad-spectrum coverage against both UVA long wave and UVB short wave light, both of which effect the skin in harmful ways. The FDA has cracked down on boastful marketing claims and established a standard test for over-the-counter (sold without a prescription) sunscreen products that determine which products are allowed to be labeled as “Broad Spectrum.”For Optimal Sun Radiation ProtectionSo to recap, the key to proper protection is the amount applied (about an ounce) and ensuring repeated application every two hours or so. Most people tend to slather on either less than the required amount or much more. In the former instance, they are obviously under-protected, and while you might think the latter is preferable, people who over-apply tend to assume they are protected and re-apply less and not seek other radiation protection such as shade and protective clothing.Regardless of any hype the sunscreen product you’re using might have, even sunscreen claims of “water-resistance” must have stated lengths of this effect lasting so as not to lull the consumers into a fake sense of security. None are 100% waterproof for any real length of time. So as with any SPF number, if you are physically active and sweating or get into the water, you probably need to reapply more often or risk losing the initial benefits of your application.Clothing Doesn’t Wear OffRemember that proper clothes are more reliable than sunscreen and you don’t have to worry about forgetting to put them on or reapplying. You’ll also be saving the amount of sunscreen needed because you’ll have less skin exposed. Broad brimmed hats are always recommended and darker colored or tightly woven fabrics and some specially treated UV protective clothing provide much more protection than say a plain white cotton T-shirt.  Be sure to pay close attention to sensitive areas. – Note – Ladies, please remember that your make-up is not considered enough protection, even if it has some sort of sunscreen in it. The best way to enhance your coverage while wearing make-up would be to utilize a good facial moisturizer with sunscreen in it to better ensure having your skin remain healthy, youthful and wrinkle free. Now onto the GOOD VIBE SUNSCREEN of CHOICE for SKIN IMMUNITY and PROTECTION!Evoq Day-Lite UV Protect (Tinted SPF 30+)Key Benefits: -Provide antioxidant protection against environmental aggressors.-Incorporate nutrients for firmer, brighter, more luminous skin.-Coverage of 97.1% UVB absorbance protection.-Natural mineral pigments blend seamlessly and are ideal for most Caucasian skin types.-Deliver powerful UVA and UVB broad-spectrum protection that helps prevent sunburn and decreases the risk of skin cancer and premature skin aging caused by the sun (wrinkles, sagging, dark spots)._____A Closer Look:You’re always in your PRIME TIME.This sunscreen and primer is a multi-action, lightweight, and 100% chemical-free hydrating lotion. In a nutshell: Avoid chemical sunscreens.  Some are worse that others.  Oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate and octinoxate should all be avoided. Use daily sunscreen on your face.   Sunscreen should be a last resort.  Plan your outdoor time wisely.  While 10-15 minutes at noon in the sun is great for your body, 2 hours of exposure will burn you and this is when you need a sunscreen. Never use a spray sunscreen as it can enter your lungs. Choose a mineral based product with Titanium Dioxide or Zinc Oxide. www.ewg.org has the sunscreen guide you need. www.theguudcompany.com/shop has products that I love and use and are safer for you.

Dr. Kathleen Moe is a board certified dermatologist and gives us extensive insights into how to make sure we have healthy skin and the best anti-aging products!  Skin Health in Midlife, it's important to check for skin cancer.  There are 3 types of skin cancer: Basal Cell, Squamous Cell and Melanoma Everyone should go to a certified dermatologist for an annual check.  Checking for Melanoma there's the ABC's.  A- Asymmetry. If the lesion looks on one side very different than the other side. B- Borders: Lesion has very irregular borders or many different colors: brown, black, pink. D- Diameter: if a larger lesion is evolving E- Eye catching: "Ugly Duckling" if it doesn't look like the other lesions on your body. The effects of Perimenopause and Menopause on your skin:  Because of hormones we dry out.  More Acne in the lower half of our face Skin thins out Lose collagen and elasticity Underneath the skin we have a layer of fat that keeps our skin lifted and that dissipates so we get sagging. Skincare Routind: Gentle Cleanser Morning: Protect Your Skin, antioxidant, vitamin C and Sunscreen Nighttime: Need to regenerate the skin with retinol, cream and eye cream. Sunscreens: Choose a sunscreen that has Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide 30 SPF or higher everyday Use one that is Water Resistant For pigment, age spots or brown spots use a "Tinted" sunscreen Apply Sunscreen 30 minutes before you leave the house or you need it. Reapply sunscreen every hour or two hours depending on perspiration and water usage.  DO NOT USE AEROSOL SUNSCREENS Protective clothing is important especially for kids. The Paleo View (TPV), Episode 302: Is Blue Light Harmful and What Should I Do? Intro (0:00) News and Views (0:40) We're back with part 2 of sunscreen science bonanza! We love it when you leave us reviews- send us an email, leave a comment on social media or our blogs! Thanks to Mary for her wonderful review of our How Many Vegetables?! podcast. Admittedly, sunscreen was one of the last things Stacy switched over for a healthier version. Sarah switch years ago when her kids were very little. She never liked the feel of chemical sunscreen on her skin. Stacy was afraid of switching away from the chemical sunscreens she knew she could count on. She was genuinely surprised that the mineral sunscreen worked! Zinc Oxide and Titanium Dioxide These are the two minerals used in mineral or physical sunscreen. They reflect UV radiation back. Sarah loved the idea of zinc-oxide based sunscreen because of her history using diaper cream as a "cure all." Question from a listener: Jordan asks, "Hi! I absolutely love The Paleo View and love listening to you guys every week! I’ve learned so many awesome new things and really look forward to it every week. I just saw your post on the Facebook group about the new Beautycounter sunscreen and have a question about the blue light blocking. I've heard that it's actually important to get blue light during the day to help with your circadian rhythm (and help sleep) and would love if you and Sarah could go into that more, especially regarding this new sunscreen. I've always used conventional sunscreens and was about to buy new Beautycounter sunscreen to use a better product, but now I'm curious about this new line." "Zeitgeber," is a German word for "clock setter," referring to something in the external environment that helps set our internal clock. Our clocks will run without external stimulus for up to three weeks, studies have shown. Blue light from the sun during the day, dim red light in the evenings, and darkness at night are the most important zeitgebers, giving the cues to our circadian rhythms. The photoreceptors detecting these are way more sensitive in our eyes than in our skin. It is much more important for our eyes to detect sunlight and blue light than our skin. It is unlikely that wearing a sunscreen that blocks blue light will wreck circadian rhythms. Screen time and indoor lighting. It is not enough blue light to hit the sunlight signal to our internal clocks. Using blue light blocking glasses to protect your eyes from strain is not likely to hinder your internal clock as long as you see the sunlight at some point during the day. LED screens have more blue light and can interfere with melatonin, especially in the evening. Blue Light: Good or Bad? Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide naturally block blue light! Other compounds that will block blue light: Lutein (this is what is in the Beautycounter sunscreen Jordan was asking about). Synthetic melanin. Blue light is now recognized to accelerate skin aging. This is from increasing the formation of oxidants in the skin. This happens at about a quarter of the level that UV radiation does. It degrades carotenoids, the natural antioxidants, in our skin. These carotenoids recover very quickly after being degraded by blue light. It is being used in the medical fields for treating various skin disorders. Wearing a blue light blocking sunscreen may also have some anti-aging benefits. Stacy noted that just as the sun has both benefits and harm, blue light also seems to have the same nuances. Blue light doesn't cause DNA damage and is not linked to skin cancer. One study showed blue light induced apoptosis in melanoma cells. Another paper showed blue light stimulated the production of melanin. What about Zinc Oxide? Very well known for 80+ years to be beneficial for skin health. Used in diaper creams, skin protectant creams for elderly, etc. It has anti-inflammatory and anti-microbial properties. Stacy feels that the zinc oxide in the face products and sunscreen she uses has helped her adult acne. Zinc is part of the molecular structure of the vitamin D receptor. What about Nano Particles? Stacy always looks for "non-nano zinc oxide." Nano particles go on more transparent and sunscreen looks less white/chalky. There isn't a definition for nano particle versus micro particles. Changing the particle size changes the wavelengths they reflect. Nano particles reflect UVB better, and are worse at reflecting UVA. There is a small amount of research showing nano particles can be absorbed into the skin and can cause cellular damage- more research is needed in this area. There is definitely research showing that nano particles can be problematic if inhaled. Stacy is concerned over using a spray or powder with nano particles for this reason. Some spray sunscreens don't differentiate if the particles are non-nano or nano. The overall take aways from both shows: Burning = bad. Non-burning sun exposure = good. Sunscreen use when burns might happen = good. Chemical sunscreens = bad. Physical sunscreens that are non-nano and non-aerosol with added phytochemicals = good. Stacy recommends that if you don't want to age your face, wear SPF on it every day. Sarah uses Araza cream foundation and powder, which has zinc-oxide. Stacy uses a Dew Skin tinted moisturizer with zinc oxide and titanium dioxide. If you've enjoyed the show, please recommend it to someone who might enjoy it. Podcast Interview with Surfer & Theoretical Physicist Garrett Lisi Garrett Lisi, a famous theoretical physicist, has been someone I've been following for a long time. What I've always admired about Garrett is how he embraces experiences instead of stuff. I first found out about Garrett after his TED talk 10 years ago, and we've been in touch since. Science isn't Garrett's only love, surfing his one of his many passions. window.dojoRequire(["mojo/signup-forms/Loader"], function(L) { L.start({"baseUrl":"mc.us19.list-manage.com","uuid":"c98f8ee80dad6b3294c16e167","lid":"2d6f35300e","uniqueMethods":true}) }) Learning How to Surf and Stand Up Paddle Surf in Maui The summertime is the best time to learn how to surf in Maui. If you have more than 2 weeks to commit to surfing, Garrett recommends that you buy a board over 8 feet on craigslist and committing those weeks to really learning how to surf. If you have less than 2 weeks, then rent a board at Hi-Tech and they'll talk to you about where to go. Winds do kick up in the summertime in the afternoon, so it's recommended to go surfing in the morning or right before sunset. By going surfing at these times you're also avoiding the sun when it is at its worst. Top Maui Surf Spots for Beginners: The Cofe Grandma's Launiupoko Thousand Peaks Kaanapali Beach Average surfboard rental is about $30 a day. Instead of traditional surfing you can try stand up paddle surfing. Make sure that the board is stable enough that you can balance on it. I made that mistake and tried a board that I could not get my balance on, and I could not stand up on this board, even though I stand up paddle board a lot on rivers and lakes here in Bend, Oregon. What's great about stand up paddle surfing is that you're already winning once you're standing on the board, now you just need to catch the wave! Best Beach in Maui to Surf and Bring a Toddler To: We were just in Maui and found Launiupoko and it is the perfect spot to bring your baby or toddler to because there is an awesome wading pool protected by the waves. Have one parent stay behind with your toddler while the other surfs or stand up paddle board surfs just right ahead. Surfing Attire and Coral Reef Safe Sunscreen You will want to wear a rash guard and a surfing hat. Maui has a real problem with sunscreen, bad sunscreen is getting into the water and upsetting the coral reef. Most sunscreen is all bad for the coral reef. Oxybenzone is a common ingredient in sunscreen and it hurts the coral. If you're hitting the waves, use Zinc Oxide or find a coral reef safe sunscreen like Badger.

It's Memorial Day and, for many, that means it's the kickoff to summer: beach, pools, barbecues, and heaping helping of Vitamin D. In this episode, I discuss how to make your own homemade sunscreen and highlight brands that actually work, without all of the bad stuff. The problem with commercial sunscreens is that they often contains toxic ingredients and endocrine-disrupting chemicals that, in many cases, can actually promote skin cancer growth and free radical production in the body. In fact, in the years since sunscreen use began, skin cancer rates have actually increased. Homemade Sunscreen Many of the ingredients in this recipe have a natural SPF (sun protection factor). This is a natural recipe and has not been tested by a regulatory organization for exact SPF. For this reason, I can't (and don't) make any claims or even guesses as to the combined SPF. Ingredients: ½ cup almond or olive oil (can infuse with herbs first if desired) ¼ cup coconut oil (natural SPF 4) ¼ cup beeswax 2 Tablespoons Zinc Oxide (This is a non-nano version that won't be absorbed into the skin. Be careful not to inhale the powder). Up to 1 teaspoon Red Raspberry Seed Oil – optional Up to 1 teaspoon Carrot Seed Oil – optional 2 tablespoons Shea Butter (natural SPF 4-5) - optional Optional: Essential Oils, Vanilla Extract or other natural extracts to suit your preference (Do not use citrus essential oils as they increase sun sensitivity) Instructions: Combine ingredients except zinc oxide in a pint sized or larger glass jar. I have a mason jar that I keep just for making lotions and lotion bars, or you can even reuse a glass jar from pickles, olives, or other foods. Fill a medium saucepan with a couple inches of water and place over medium heat. Put a lid on the jar loosely and place in the pan with the water. As the water heats, the ingredients in the jar will start to melt. Shake or stir occasionally to incorporate. When all ingredients are completely melted, add the zinc oxide, stir in well and pour into whatever jar or tin you will use for storage. Small mason jars (pint size) are great for this. It will not pump well in a lotion pump! Stir a few times as it cools to make sure zinc oxide is incorporated. Store at room temperature. Additional Notes: This sunscreen is not waterproof and will need to be reapplied after sweating or swimming. Make sure not to inhale the Zinc Oxide– use a mask if necessary! Add more beeswax to make thicker sunscreen, less to make smooth sunscreen I recommend coconut or vanilla extract or lavender essential oils for fragrance Store in a cool, dry place or in the fridge I prefer to store in a small canning jar and apply like a body butter. It will be thicker, especially if you use coconut oil in the recipe. Remove the Zinc Oxide and this makes an excellent lotion recipe! I've also gotten some questions about pre-made sunscreen options for those who don't have the time or desire to make a homemade version of their own. The best brand I've found is Badger and they have several great organic, non-nano versions: Sport sunscreen: Badger Organic SPF 35 For Baby: Badger Organic Baby Sunscreen SPF 30 Kids Sunscreen: Badger Organic Kids Sunscreen Tangerine and Vanilla SPF 30 Best smell (in my opinion): Badger Lavender Sunscreen SPF 30 -- Resources: Environmental Working Group's 11th Annual Sunshine Guide Do you want more to empower yourself through healthy living? Diarrhea is not fun, diarrhea in kids is not fun, diarrhea in kids in diapers is certainly not fun.  Diaper rash can flair in just one or two diaper changes. Diaper rash products Protectant ointments: like vaseline, kind of greasy but provide a moisture barrier to keep the skin's moisture levels from getting out of balance. Zinc Oxide: like Desitin, white or opaque and thick, keeps the moisture in the skin in, and the moisture outside the skin out.  More completely covers diaper rash so really sore spots can heal faster. Diaper Rash Some diaper rashes are caused by a yeast imbalance, so doctors may recommend an OTC or prescription yeast cream. Sometimes diaper rashes can be really itchy (even though little babies can't tell you they itch, so all they do is cry), so OTC or prescription steroid creams can be used. Diaper rash from diarrhea is usually caused by acid that is released in the liquid stool.  For babies in diapers, when acidic diarrhea exits the body, it hurts; but then it sits in the diaper and continues to hurt and irritate the skin.  Not to mention the irritation that may have already occurred due to frequent diaper changes. A frequently recommended fix for diaper rash is air.  Letting the rash air dry and not be closed up in a diaper can work a lot of times.  That doesn't sound like a great solution if baby has diarrhea. There's a butt paste that pharmacies can compound with a doctor's prescription. Recipe Aquaphor ointment (OTC) - kind protectant Mylanta (OTC) - antacid to neutralize acid Cholestyramine powder (Rx) - medication that treats cholesterol by trapping up lipids in the intestines so the body doesn't absorb it - it can trap up bile that comes out in the stool You can use 2 out of the 3 ingredients and do this yourself with a couple tools in your kitchen! Heat the tub of aquaphor on a hot plate, or warm it in a double boiler, until melted.  (You don't want to have to remove all the ointment from the tub to melt b/c you'll waste some and it'll be really gooey). Add 2 Tbsp (30 ml, 1 fl. oz) of Mylanta to liquid Aquaphor and stir well. Let it cool!  Do not put warm ointment on your baby! Apply to baby bum as needed for diaper rash. Doesn't have to be just for babies.... Anyone who has had diarrhea and experienced the burn from the acid and irritation from frequent stools can benefit from this product. Abstract: Zinc ions (Zn 2+ ) are important messenger molecules involved in various physiological functions. To maintain the homeostasis of cytosolic Zn 2+ concentration ([Zn 2+ ] c ), Zrt/Irt-related proteins (ZIPs) and Zn 2+ transporters (ZnTs) are the two families of proteins responsible for decreasing and increasing the [Zn 2+ ] c , respectively, by fluxing Zn 2+ across the membranes of the cell and intracellular compartments in opposite directions. Most studies focus on the cytotoxicity incurred by a high concentration of [Zn 2+ ] c and less investigate the [Zn 2+ ] c at physiological levels. Zinc oxide-nanoparticle (ZnO-NP) is blood brain barrier-permeable and elevates the [Zn 2+ ] c to different levels according to the concentrations of ZnO-NP applied. In this study, we mildly elevated the [Zn 2+ ] c by zinc oxide-nanoparticles (ZnO-NP) at concentrations below 1 mg/ml, which had little cytotoxicity, in cultured human neuroblastoma SH-SY5Y cells and characterized the importance of Zn 2+ transporters in 6-hydroxy dopamine (6-OHDA)-induced cell death. The results show that ZnO-NP at low concentrations elevated the [Zn 2+ ] c transiently in 6 hr, then declined gradually to a basal level in 24 hr. Knocking down the expression levels of ZnT 1 (mostly at the plasma membrane) and ZIP 8 (present in endosomes and lysosomes) increased and decreased the ZnO-NP-induced elevation of [Zn 2+ ] c , respectively. ZnO-NP treatment reduced the basal levels of reactive oxygen species and Bax/Bcl-2 mRNA ratios; in addition, ZnO-NP decreased the 6-OHDA-induced ROS production, p53 expression, and cell death. Therefore, mild elevations in [Zn 2+ ] c induced by ZnO-NP activate beneficial effects in reducing the 6-OHDA-induced cytotoxic effects. Therefore, brain-delivery of ZnO-NP can be regarded as a potential therapy for neurological disease. Copy rights belong to original authors. Visit the link for more info
