Har Housemarque overgået sig selv?Saros er et tredjepersons action-adventure-roguelite udviklet af Housemarque og udgivet af Sony Interactive Entertainment. Housemarque har lavet spil siden starten af 90'erne og er den ældste og længstlevende spiludvikler i Finland. Faktisk var Housemarque den første finske spiludvikler, der lavede kommercielle computerspil. Housemarque er særligt kendte for Super Stardust og Resogun. Sidstnævnte blev en launchtitel til PlayStation 4, og i mange anmelderkredse anses Resogun for at være det bedste launchspil til PS4.Housemarque har primært været kendt for at producere mindre spil, særligt inden for highscore-chasing og bullet hell-genren. I 2021 udkom deres mest ambitiøse projekt nogensinde: Returnal. Et eksklusivt spil til PlayStation 5, som fik fantastiske anmeldelser verden over. Spillet førte også til, at Housemarque blev købt af Sony og dermed blev et first-party-studie hos PlayStation.Desværre solgte Returnal ikke særligt godt og har i dag kun solgt lidt over én million eksemplarer på trods af, at det er udgivet på både PC og PS5. Måske er netop dét også årsagen til, at deres nye spil ikke hedder Returnal 2, men Saros. Saros blev første gang annonceret i februar 2025, og selvom det lignede og smagte af Returnal, hed det noget andet. I hovedrollen finder vi ingen ringere end skuespilleren Rahul Kohli, som mange kender fra tv-serier som iZombie og Midnight Mass.Saros foregår på den mystiske planet Carcosa, hvor en menneskelig koloni er gået tabt under en truende solformørkelse. Du spiller som Arjun, en såkaldt Soltari Enforcer, som rejser til planeten for at finde en bestemt person. Ich spreche mit Ben zunächst ein wenig über die Geschichte dieses ältesten finnischen Studios, dessen Entwickler schon 1993 auf dem Amiga mit Stardust debütierten. Wir gehen auf einige Spiele wie Super Stardust, Dead Nation, Outland, Resogun, Matterfall und Nex Machina ein, bevor wir uns der großen Krise des Studios gegen 2017 rund um das geplante Battle-Royale Stormdivers widmen. Die Finnen erklärten Arcade zum Entsetzen ihrer Fans schon für tot, auch weil sich die Shoot'em Ups nicht gut genug verkauften. Aber dann kam es 2021 zur unerwarteten Wiedergeburt von Arcade, indem man zum ersten Mal eine Story erzählte, die Action aus Schultersicht inszenierte und gleichzeitig die explosiven Formationskämpfe beibehielt. Auch aus diesem Erfolg heraus wurde das Studio von Sony gekauft, um an einer neuen Trilogie zu arbeiten. Saros baut natürlich auf dem Fundament von Returnal auf, ist aber kein Nachfolger und definiert die Arcade-Action auf eine sehr eigene, unheimlich anziehende Art. Wir analysieren die Story ohne große Spoiler, dazu das außerweltliche Artdesign, die Bezüge zum König in Gelb, natürlich die Spielmechanik und diskutieren den umstrittenen Schwierigkeitsgrad, denn Saros ist deutlich einfacher als Returnal.

Saros is een bullet hell 3D-shooter met roguelite-elementen, gemaakt door de Finse PlayStation-studio Housemarque, bekend van hun soortgelijke vorige titel Returnal en eerder Resogun. Lyt med og hør Arkadens (måske) mest kontroversielle anmeldelse til dato. Vi anmelder nemlig Sony's (tidligere) PlayStation 5 eksklusive titel Returnal, som endelig også er udkommet på PC. Spillet er udviklet af finske Housemarque, som tidligere har stået bag de fremragende titler Resogun og Super Stardust. Begge er dog titler i en mindre skala, og Returnal er Housemarques første forsøg på at skabe en ægte AAA titel. Hvordan er det så gået? Avec Returnal sur PS5, c'est le troisième lancement de console Playstation que Housemarque accompagne. Mais contrairement à Super Stardust HD et Resogun, ce dernier titre incarne une ambition nouvelle pour le studio Finlandais. Comme dans les jeux précédents il y est bien toujours question de slalomer entre des nuages de projectiles mais cette fois-ci, c'est sous la forme d'un TPS frénétique dans un monde alien généré procéduralement. Le tout avec des graphismes top niveau. Il y avait donc de quoi se prendre un bon mur mais Housemarque a dashé à travers, en proposant un univers malin et un gameplay arcade aussi exigeant que calibré. Por eso motivo el género evolucionó hasta convertirse en una propuesta aún más radical: el bullet hell o danmaku. La compañía japonesa CAVE se especializó en esta nueva tendencia minoritaria gracias a la saga DoDonPachi, que convirtió sus infernales tiroteos en su razón de ser. Poco después, la mítica Treasure se subió al carro del shmup de manera tardía pero con dos obras maestras que aún perduran y que trascendieron el género con Radiant Silvergun y, sobre todo, Ikaruga. Housemarque hat uns schon einige gute Actiontitel geliefert. Ob Dead Nation, Resogun oder Alienation, alle haben zu unterhalten gewusst. Matterfall bildet hier keine Ausnahme. Das Spiel hat eine gewohnt gute Grafik, wobei 1080p leider nur bei der PS4 Pro verfügbar sind. Die Sounds und Musik passen zu diesem Twin-Stick-2D-Sidescroller-Shooter wie die Faust aufs Auge und die Effekte sind auch sehr ansehnlich. Was also macht dieses Spiel nicht so gut, um nicht mehr als 75% zu erhalten? Zu allererst fällt einmal auf, dass es keine wirkliche Geschichte gibt. Es ist eine vorhanden um die Action zu rechtfertigen, aber mehr schon nicht. Die Kampagne hat man schnell durch und obwohl die Level sehr hübsch und unterschiedlich sind, gibt es keine wirklichen Chancen mehr zu entdecken, als gelegentliche Abzweigungen um Zivilisten zu retten. Auch an die Steuerung muss man sich erst einmal gewöhnen. R1 zum Springen? Ernsthaft? Angenehm ist, dass dafür der Schwierigkeitsgrad kontinuierlich steigt und die Spawnpunkte fair gesetzt sind. Nur der Endboss bildet hier eine Ausnahme, denn der ist echt nicht von schlechten Eltern. Obwohl Matterfall für mich nicht gerade ein Highlight von Housemarque ist, macht es insgesamt trotzdem viel Spaß, ich habe mir aber bei dieser Herkunft mehr erhofft. Fans von Sidescroller und Twin-Stick Shootern werden mit Matterfall eine coole, actionreiche Zeit erleben, wenn sie sich nicht zu viel erwarten.

Nex Machina ist ein Twin-stick-Shooter von den Machern von Resogun, und das merkt man auch direkt. Man ballert auf Maschinen, welche dann in einzelne Stückchen zerplatzen, nebenbei kann man noch Menschen retten, indem man sie einsammelt, also sehr ähnlich zu Resogun, selbst die Sprüche sind genau gleich. Der Unterschied ist, dass man diesmal nicht mit einem Raumschiff fliegt, sondern läuft. Es gibt fünf verschiedene Level und mehrere Schwierigkeitsgrade, bei denen es dann unterschiedlich viele Continues gibt. Leider verliert man aber nach jeden Continue sämtliche aufgesammelten Waffenupgrades, was dann leider nicht besonders hilfreich ist an einer schwierigen Stelle. Es empfiehlt sich also, auf einfach anzufangen und die Level auswendig zu lernen. Was besonders viel Spaß macht ist der Couch-Koop-Modus, welcher allerdings dann auch ziemlich unübersichtlich werden kann. Außerdem braucht man wirklich viel Frustresistenz, denn das Spiel verzeiht keinen Fehler! Bei den Spielmodi gibt es neben dem Arcade auch die Möglichkeit, einen Arena-Modus zu spielen und den eigenen Highscore oder den von Freunden zu knacken. Auch die zahlreichen Herausforderungen laden zum Wiederspielen ein. Man kann also viel Spaß mit Nex Machina haben.
