Hannah Diviney is one of the most powerful people in pop culture. At just 25 years old, the author, advocate, and actor hasn’t just called out Lizzo for using an ableist slur—she also took on Queen B herself. And she succeeded on both fronts. Which, once you get to know her, isn’t surprising at all. In our Vulnerabilitea House, Hannah reflects on the questions: “How do you see yourself? Is it the same way your loved ones see you?” Answering with incredible vulnerability, Hannah shares how her relationship with her disability has evolved over time and what it was like growing up in a world where the Paralympics seemed like the only visible marker of success. We talk to Hannah about being a part of intimate television history, and Ryan, the love doctor, Shelton manifests a Brad (or Stewie, or Chris, or Michael-Angelo) in her future. Hannah, we are so desperate to be your friend. To watch this full episode on YouTube, click here: https://bit.ly/41vzALg

Hannah Diviney is a writer, disability advocate, actress, screenwriter, author and media personality. Her disability advocacy has garnered global attention thanks to both a viral petition encouraging Disney to create a disabled Disney Princess and a successful campaign encouraging both Lizzo and Beyonce to change ableist lyrics. As if that wasn't enough, she also made television history as the first disabled person in Australia to do a sex scene on television in the SBS series, ‘Latecomers' and she's joining Em to talk about some of those things plus her feature film debut in the new dark comedy ‘Audrey'. Together they'll discuss what it was like to see Marissa Bode as the first disabled actor to play the role of Nessarose in ‘Wicked' and then interview her afterwards as well. We'll also talk about what it's like to be in her first feature film, how she secured the role and even how the script was changed to reflect her abilities as well. Hannah is utterly hilarious as well and they both connect over their shared love of awkward conversations and Em's belief that Hannah needs to get her sit down comedy career underway as well. Our annual panel of pop culture experts Brodie Lancaster, Alison Willmore, Hannah Diviney and Jared Richards gather for a dissection of the zeitgeist. Baby Reindeer, The Bear and hot rodent men: lt has been a ferocious (and sometimes feral) year for pop culture, and it seems that we're not slowing down any time soon. On the occasion of the 2024 Melbourne International Film Festival, host Brodie Lancaster is joined by Vulture and New York magazine film critic Alison Willmore, disability advocate and star of the new Australian film Audrey Hannah Diviney, and ABC Entertainment Reporter Jared Richards to discuss the most influential and popular film, TV, podcasts and books of the past 12 months. Expect hot takes served with a dash of frenzy and a healthy dose of reality-check. The event was presented in partnership with The Wheeler Centre and Melbourne International Film Festival as part of MIFF Talks, a program presented by the University of Melbourne. Everyone. We know we say that every episode of Booksmart is special, but this one is PARTICULARLY so (we promise). And it's poetry too, so even better. This week, Hannah Diviney got to sit down with proud Wiradjuri poet Jeanine Leane to discuss her new work of poetry titled Gawimarra: Gathering. We don't want to spoil the collection, or this discussion, but here's the poetry in a nutshell: 'Gawimarra: Gathering' moves from deeply tender meditations on Country, culture and kinship, to experimental archival poems dissecting the violence and destruction of the settler-colony. Jeanine Leane's poems are richly palpable in texture, imagery and language, layering the personal with the political, along with a sharp-tongued telling of history. Cleverly divided into three parts, ‘Gathering', ‘Nation' and ‘Returning', Gawimarra weaves back and forth in a dedication to strong matriarchs, and the core acts of gathering and returning – memory, language, history – resonate powerfully throughout. This remarkable book is the result of decades of poetic, political, and cultural work and reflection.

This week, Mandy (Kate's away!) is speaking to Hannah Diviney – writer, disability advocate and editor-in-chief of Missing Perspectives. Hannah was a 2021 finalist for both the Australian Women's Weekly Women of The Future Awards and the 2022 Young Australian of The Year Awards. She's an impressive and effective disability advocate who has successfully challenged some of the biggest names in show business to address ableism and make positive change. Hannah began her disability advocacy over concerns over disabled people's representation in film, particularly after the harmful portrayal of the autism community in Sia's film Music. She also launched a petition to lobby Disney to create a princess with a disability, which has so far garnered over 60,000 signatures and received support from celebs such as Reese Witherspoon and Blake Lively. Hannah also went unexpectedly viral after tweeting Lizzo to change an ableist slur in the lyrics of Grrrls and succeeding, despite some backlash and trolling, and doing it all again with Beyonce's song Renaissance. Hannah talks about founding and running her own publication Missing Perspectives, a publication platform dedicated to addressing the marginalisation of women in news, media, and democracy. She also shares her experiences of growing up with cerebral palsy, including her schooling, surgeries, the toughness of high school and the trickiness of relationships and the joy of eventually finding her people. Hannah also shares some thoughts and advice for Pea parents with kids with cerebral palsy. Thank you for sharing your incredible story with us Hannah! The Commonwealth Games in Birmingham are underway and for the first time in a major multi-sport event, more medals will be awarded to women than men, with the medal programme confirming a total of 136 events for women compared to 134 for men. Jessica speaks to BBC Sports presenter Clare Balding as well as the first ever female Chef de Mission for Team Scotland, who for the first time have more women competing in their team than men. Six weeks after pop star Lizzo changed the lyrics of her song because it contained an ableist slur, Beyonce has been criticised for using the same term. In her new song ‘Heated', which is co-written by hiphop star Drake, the slur is used twice. In a statement, Beyonce said the term wasn't used intentionally in a harmful way, and will be replaced. Hannah Diviney is a writer and Disability Activist from Sydney, who went viral for calling out both Lizzo and Beyonce. The impact of body image on mental and physical health is "wide-reaching" according to a new wide-ranging report out today by the Health and Social Care Committee which calls for e.g. for the Government to introduce a law so "commercial images" which feature bodies which have been doctored in any way - including changing body proportions or skin tone - are legally required to carry a logo to let viewers know they have been digitally altered. And the Government to speed up the introduction of a promised licensing regime for non-surgical cosmetic procedures to prevent vulnerable people being exploited. Penelope Campling is a psychiatrist and psychotherapist. Over the course of her 40-year career, she has seen many changes in the way we treat serious mental illness. Like many kids I loved watching Disney films growing up (of course my favourites were Mulan and Beauty and the Beast). But Disney has a problem with representation - there are still no disabled Disney princesses. Disability advocate and film fanatic Hannah Diviney was tired of this.
