Danke an Euch fürs Zuhören. Und an Lilly Jagl für ihre wertvolle Zeit. Eine Produktion von DAS POD. Idee, Foto & Moderation: Wolfgang Kühnelt, www.haubentaucher.at

Hello people welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast how are you I hope you're all well. We are back and have a really fun episode to share. This is episode 61 and features GK and Hannah from the predominantly Yorkshire based band Venus Grrrls. We caught up at the delightful Brudenell Social Club in Leeds a few days before their first headline gig there - which if you're listening at any point before 8pm on Saturday 10th February 2024, you can still get along to. Venus Grrrls have been on my list to chat to for a while but due to a global pandemic and GK's leukaemia diagnosis either of which could have been the end of the band, we have only just been able to make this happen. We discuss both GK and Hannah's history with music how the band came to be and unlock the secret to building and maintaining a loyal fan base. I had a great chatting to these two and I hope you enjoy listening. They are setting 2024 up to be a busy year with support dates with The Sprints and festival slots already in the calendar so keep a look out. Links to all their social media and YouTube channels are in the description of this episode, I strongly recommend you check them out along with their latest track Divine, which has been described as a lusty grunge storm of a single and already getting support from Radio 1, radio x and 6 music amongst other. It's absolute treat. Divine: VENUS GRRRLS - Divine (Official Video)https://www.facebook.com/VENUSGRRRLS@venusgrrrls Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

This week, Mandy (Kate's away!) is speaking to Hannah Diviney – writer, disability advocate and editor-in-chief of Missing Perspectives. Hannah was a 2021 finalist for both the Australian Women's Weekly Women of The Future Awards and the 2022 Young Australian of The Year Awards. She's an impressive and effective disability advocate who has successfully challenged some of the biggest names in show business to address ableism and make positive change. Hannah began her disability advocacy over concerns over disabled people's representation in film, particularly after the harmful portrayal of the autism community in Sia's film Music. She also launched a petition to lobby Disney to create a princess with a disability, which has so far garnered over 60,000 signatures and received support from celebs such as Reese Witherspoon and Blake Lively. Hannah also went unexpectedly viral after tweeting Lizzo to change an ableist slur in the lyrics of Grrrls and succeeding, despite some backlash and trolling, and doing it all again with Beyonce's song Renaissance. Hannah talks about founding and running her own publication Missing Perspectives, a publication platform dedicated to addressing the marginalisation of women in news, media, and democracy. She also shares her experiences of growing up with cerebral palsy, including her schooling, surgeries, the toughness of high school and the trickiness of relationships and the joy of eventually finding her people. Hannah also shares some thoughts and advice for Pea parents with kids with cerebral palsy. Thank you for sharing your incredible story with us Hannah! The Takeaway
Insensitive Lyrics Are Only Apart of the Problem for This Black Disabled Activist

The Takeaway

Play Episode Listen Later Aug 17, 2022 8:40

The world has been captivated by Beyoncé's 7th studio album RENAISSANCE ever since it dropped nearly two weeks ago. And while many have relished in the excitement of the new era Beyoncé has ushered in, it hasn't been without some controversy. Amidst a crediting conflict primarily between artist Kelis and music producer Pharrell, another issue arose. Some disability advocates took issue with a song lyric containing the word 'spaz' in the track “Heated.”  It's a word rooted in the word spastic, a medical term often used to describe those who suffer from disabilities involving muscle spasms. Beyoncé's not the only artist who has received criticism for the use of the term. In June, Lizzo also received similar backlash after including the word in the lyrics to the song "Grrrls." In response both artists removed the word from their lyrics. Writing this month for OkayPlayer, Clementine Williams noted that the term has often been used by Black artists to mean “going wild,” and that the initial call outs on the Beyoncé and Lizzo lyrics were largely made by white disability activists. However, the double meaning and history of its use in African American Vernacular English does not negate the harm the term can cause for the disabled community. Instead, moments such as these have helped create dialogue around what accountability can look like in the music industry, and even drawn the conversation to the growing movement and consciousness around disability. But for Black disabled writer, poet, activist, and scholar Leroy Moore Jr., he couldn't help but notice a critical voice missing from the conversation: Black disabled artists. Leroy was born with cerebral palsy and has dedicated much of his writing and activism to disability rights. He co-founded Krip-Hop Nation, a movement that uses hip-hop as a means of expression for people with disabilities and this movement has grown to different parts of the world including parts of Africa and Europe. He is also a doctoral student in linguistic anthropology at UCLA, and he writes and delivers lectures and performances that reflect the intersections between racism and ableism, in the United States and abroad.  Leroy joined The Takeaway to give us his take on the situation. He addressed the problematic nature of both policing Black language while erasing Black disabled voices and he shined a light on the ways Krip-Hop Nation is working to make change.

In the middle of a long, hot summer 2022, the people have spoken, and the people want to dance. Lizzo's "About Damn Time" just replaced Harry Styles's "As It Was" to become the top song on the Billboard Hot 100. Powered by retro instrumentation, a propulsive groove, meme-worthy lyrics, and a generous dose of slash chords (not the Guns 'n Roses guitarist, the harmonic voicing), Lizzo's hit song marks a deepening of the sound she established in past tracks like "Juice." But on other tracks from her latest album Special, Lizzo aims for new aesthetics. "Coldplay"—featuring a rare Chris Martin vocal sample—opts for emotional honestly over pithy affirmations. With the upbeat "Grrrls," Lizzo found herself in an online controversy: she had used a ableist slur in the song's lyrics. Taking the criticism as an opportunity to learn, Lizzo chose to replace the offensive line—but have other artists of pop's past always followed suit when met with fan feedback?
