I woke up this morning feeling the spark of spring, and simultaneously felt the excitement of plants popping up. Maybe soon, maybe not. In those moments, I started to reflect on the multitude of ways we can "be an herbalist." And how I'm really a blend of so many, depending on the day, and how my personal herbal journey reflects this. I realized I haven't really ever told my own personal plant path story - not fully at least, and while I couldn't fit it ALL into one episode, I tried to give the highlights to offer some context to how the heck I got where I am, some of the influences along the way, and a few pivotal moments where I realized what I wanted to pursue and why.I hope it's not just a story about me, and instead it's a glimpse into what a diverse, meandering plant path can look like in a way that inspires you to feel into what's true and right for you. Whether that's in your own plant path or in choosing an herbalist or practitioner to work with. The truth is, no two herbalists are the same. And your unique expression of herbal medicine will be your own. Plant medicine is truly people's medicine and I want to encourage you to bring whatever form of herbalism you practice to the world. But also to name it in a way that reflects your path honestly. I offer a few different ideas for you to pick from -- folk herbalism, home/family herbalism, community herbalism, embodied herbalism, clinical herbalism. But maybe there's another one that resonates even more for you. And please, name your teachers too. They deserve our honoring. I meant "bodywork school" when I said "herb school" where I learned mostly about flower essences and aromatherapy. And I meant to say "Andrew" not "Adam" when I was talking about my teachers at David Winston's school! This week Colleen and Robyn welcome Nicole Rutsch Nicole Rutsch is a NYC-based Holy Fire Karuna Reiki Master Teacher, Sound Healer, and Herbalist. Nicole works with individuals who want to take their lives in a new and positive direction and helps her clients quell anxiety, reduce stress, and become clear about what they want from life. She grew up on a farm in a town called Stadecken, outside of Mainz, Germany, where she loved to spend time in nature, and developed a deep connection to Mother Earth. Much of her childhood was spent with her grandfather in the field, tending to the family's grapevines, and cherry trees, or learning how to cook traditional German meals and make fruit preserves in the kitchen with her grandmother and mother. Nicole started her career as a photo assistant, which turned into working as a food-stylist. In 2014, she developed her passion for food and started her own successful catering business. Initially, the majority of her clients came from the fashion industry, including Marc Jacobs, Tommy Hilfiger, Vera Wang, Rag & Bone, Michael Kors, Derek Lam, and many more. Shortly after, Nicole expanded into the wellness industry, partnering with clients like Alo Yoga, Athleta, Adidas, and Bandier. While working in the wellness space, Nicole saw a deep need to help people understand the healing powers of natural food and herbs, which led her to herbalism and Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Soon thereafter, she began studying at the New York Open Center under renowned herbalists Peeka Trenkle, David Winston, and Drew DiVittorio. The knowledge Nicole gleaned from her studies in herbalism allowed her to begin helping others rebuild their relationship with food in a positive, healthy, and natural way. In addition to healing the body by using healthy food and herbs, Nicole also realized the importance of healing the mind and spirit as well, thus from an integrated wholistic perspective. In the face of challenges on her own personal journey, Nicole became very self-aware and introspective. This led her to begin working with Reiki, a Japanese therapeutic technique, that allows the healer to move energy in the patient in order to encourage emotional and physical well-being. After witnessing Reiki's palliative effects firsthand, Nicole became a Reiki Master, which certified her to practice all forms of Reiki. Shortly thereafter, after beginning to work with Reiki, Nicole also discovered the benefits of working with crystal alchemy sound bowls, a practice known as Sound Healing. By integrating Sound Healing with Reiki in her unique way, Nicole discovered a powerful recipe for alleviating stress and anxiety, and engendering feelings of calmness and gratitude. Experiencing the palliative power of reiki and sound firsthand gave Nicole the desire to share these gifts with the world. This inspired her to begin her current practice, with the intention of helping clients see the enormous potential within themselves for positive change, by harnessing the power of reiki, sound-healing, herbal remedies, and a healthy lifestyle. Moreover, Nicole recently collaborated with Alo Yoga, a renowned wellness yoga brand, to create a groundbreaking meditation series centered around Reiki. This visionary project marked the first-ever launch of its kind, exclusively featured on Alo Moves, their esteemed membership platform. By seamlessly blending the transformative qualities of Reiki with the serene art of meditation, Nicole's collaboration with Alo Yoga aims to guide individuals towards profound inner peace and self-discovery. Nicole is a firm believer that true growth and learning never cease. She wishes more than anything to spread her knowledge and wisdom to others in the spirit of harmony and bringing forth love, light and unity on this journey we call life. Mike Burn's first foray into Old-Time music was as a spoons player in the West Virginia University Forestry Club jug band. He soon moved on to guitar. The Forestry Club led him to Elkins for the Forest Festival where he heard Dwight Diller play in the banjo contest. It was the first time that Mike heard the clawhammer style of banjo playing and he instantly knew that was what he wanted to play. Back in Morgantown, Mike found Ron Mullenax and Jack Ramsey (who became his banjo mentor). Mike heard Highwoods at WVU around the same time and credits Highwoods fiddler, Walt Koken, as a major influence. Travelling to many old-time festivals held throughout WV, afforded Mike the opportunity to meet Melvin Wine, Glen and Delano Smith, Wilson Douglas, Woody Simmons, Carlos Dalton, Mose Coffman, and Sherman, Burl, Maggie, and Mr. Lee Hammons. In following years, he visited these folks at their homes and couldn't get enough of their music and stories. At a festival held at Pipestem State Park in WV, Mike heard Odell McGuire, Scott Nelson, Andy Williams, Brad Leftwich, Al Tharp, and David Winston playing some great, hard driving old time that reminded him of the Highwoods sound. Mike says, “I was now hooked on their brand of music. I followed the music to Lexington, Virginia for the 1975-76 Breaking up Christmas parties. Odell McGuire invited me to stay and I did.” During his time in Lexington, Mike met and became friends with Bruce Molsky, Chad Crum, James Leva, Steve Seal, and so many others. He started playing the fiddle after Odell McGuire told him there were too many banjo players in Lexington. He claims that he still plays the fiddle like a banjo: less notes and lots of rhythm. Mike met his wife, Mary Sue playing in a music session at “Breaking Up Christmas” in Lexington. Mike eventually got a “real Job” as a forester in central West Virginia and once again hooked up with Melvin Wine and Wilson Douglas with whom he played at several of the early Vandalia Gatherings. By 1980, Mike and Mary Sue had settled in Pocahontas County, both with teaching jobs. For an extended time, jobs, kids, and school activities distracted them from serious music playing. Encouragement from musician friends, especially Jay Lockman and Norris Long, and, in Mike's case, the desire to prove wrong his doctor's hopeless pronouncement about the recovery of a broken finger, propelled them back into the music. Their band, “Juanita Fireball and the Continental Drifters” debuted at the Pocahontas County Opera House in 2008 and has been playing ever since.
