Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

The proverbial "glass ceiling" is real, and can block women from reaching their full potential. There is a lot of work to be done here, but not all women are in a position to effect systemic change. So what can women (and their allies) do in their daily lives and careers to close the gap? That's the subject of Sally Helgesen's book, How Women Rise: Break the 12 Habits Holding You Back from your Next Raise, Promotion, or Job. Helgesen's groundbreaking research with thousands of women and companies over 30+ years reveals the fascinating differences between genders in the workplace, and the reasons some women struggle to claim credit for their achievements and vocalize their career aspirations — habits that often come more naturally to men. In a corporate culture where achievements are rarely valued unless you shout them from the rooftops, women constantly balance perceptions of being "too aggressive" and not advocating for themselves enough. Helgesen says, "why not both?" And she shares practical advice for women navigating these tricky waters. Hosted on Acast. Xavier shares how he created a company that impacted the world, donated $20M+ to global literacy, maintained double digit growth for years and sold to a charity founded by the creator of Amazon's Alexa for millions of dollars. What You Will Learn in Today’s Podcast Interview: How and why Xavier sold his company to the creator of Amazon’s Alexa A framework to evaluate what problems in the world you connect with What a B Corporation is and how it works How rapid growth can lead to needing an investor Why Xavier would have had more options if he grew at 25% CAGR instead of 40% Xavier’s views on the “Triple Bottom Line” The value of transparency and public commitments How to approach working with venture capital How to integrate Conscious Capitalism into your business model How a strong mission and vision can lead to outsized long-term growth How to align your company’s vision and mission with a buyer How to learn and approach the sale of your company as an entrepreneur Tips for founders on how to pass along knowledge in your company Podcast Summary: What does it mean to bake your mission and vision into all aspects of your company? The guest on today’s episode, Xavier Helgesen, explains to us just how he did that as the Co-founder of one of the first B Corporations, Better World Books. B Corps formally combine public interest goals with profit earning throughout their business model—other B Corps you may know include Patagonia and Tom’s Shoes. Xavier shares how Better World Books raised over $20 million dollars for global literacy and donated tens of millions of books, while also maintaining double digit growth 15 years in a row. The company’s rapid growth led them to take on investors and ultimately sell to a charity, which is unique in and of itself, but the charity also happened to be founded by the creator of Amazon’s Alexa. Today’s episode hits home the power of building a company while intentionally linking it to the life you want to live. The underlying values and mission of a business can range from charity work to financial stability, and Xavier emphasizes the added growth a business can experience by integrating that mission into the company’s cost and future plans. This conversation focuses on how to intentionally align a social cause with a company’s mission at each stage of starting, growing, and selling a business—it is an inspiring story of how a “conscious capitalism” oriented company proves that good business is not just good marketing. About the Guest: Xavier Helgesen is an entrepreneur, technologist, global citizen, and builder of world positive companies. He co-founded Better World Books, the first ever b-corporation. Better World Books is an independent online bookstore with a unique triple-bottom-line mode
See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.
What keeps talented, hardworking women from attaining positions of leadership? Yes, there are cultural and structural issues at play, but how can we put ourselves in a position to influence and shape those structures? How do women identify—and break—the habits that hold us back? Sally Helgesen has 30-plus years of experience in the field of women's leadership. As an author, speaker and consultant, she helps women recognize, articulate and act on their greatest strengths. Helgesen's books include bestseller The Female Advantage, hailed as ‘the classic work' on women's leadership styles, and The Web of Inclusion, credited with bringing the language of inclusion into the business. She is a sought-after facilitator and keynote speaker for corporations, partnership firms and universities around the world, and Helgesen has consulted for the United Nations and led seminars at the Harvard Graduate School for Education and Smith College. Today, Helgesen walks us through several of the habits discussed in her new book, How Women Rise, explaining the value in promoting our achievements and the danger in overvaluing expertise. She offers insight around setting manageable goals and engaging allies for support as well as letting go of judgement by adopting an ‘oh well' approach to mistakes. Listen in as Helgeson describes how we can leverage our strengths as women and break the habits that hold us back! Key Interview Takeaways Be clear about your contributions and claim your value. To move up in an organization, women must find a comfortable way to promote their achievements. Expertise will only get you so far. Mastering the details of the position you're in now can make you indispensable in THAT role and prevent you from moving up! Don't make the mistake of putting your job before your career. Start with one habit. Choose one manageable goal to work on first; for example, you might make it a point to communicate more concisely in a weekly meeting. Engage allies and ask for help. Women who recruit peer coaches and solicit feedback from others are much more successful than those who try to change habits on their own. Adopt an ‘oh well' approach. Let go of judgement—of yourself AND others. Every problematic habit is rooted in a strength. Don't overly react against your natural tendencies. Qualities such as conscientiousness, loyalty, modesty and concern for others are valuable; in fact, they got you where you are!
