Today is a very special day in the Do Good to Lead Well universe! The podcast officially turns 100. It is hard to imagine how far we have traveled together in a very short time. It is impossible to do justice to the amazing conversations we have shared together. To mark this very special occasion, I curated some of the most inspiring and thought-provoking insights shared by the CEOs, bestselling authors, and TED speakers I have spoken with over the past 2 years. I picked the clips that attendees most commented on during or after the live broadcast. My goal on putting this episode together was to provide a masterclass on self-leadership. After sharing these powerful clips, I'll provide my commentary, linking the threads together and connecting them with past guests. At the close of the episode, the tables are turned as Alan Mulally, the former CEO of Ford Motor Company and my collaborator on my latest book, asks me a question or two. I hope you enjoy this extended episode as much as I did putting it together. What You'll Learn: • Why we need to manage things and lead people. • How radical respect is the foundation of leadership effectiveness. • Why the best leaders focus on continuous improvement. • How to better manage our egos • Delegation allows us to scale ourselves as leaders and uplevel our team members. • Ways to create an inclusive environment. • How to maximize personal accountability • Navigating conflict and leading with courage • Building resilience • Mastering authentic leadership Podcast Timestamps: (00:00) - A Heartfelt Thank You (07:11) - Manage Things, Lead People with Stephen M.R. Episode Summary This episode discusses account-based marketing strategies with guest Amanda Dyson. She shares insights on personalizing ABM approaches based on customer understanding rather than focusing on features. Amanda emphasizes the importance of collaboration between sales and marketing in areas like account nomination and campaign planning. She also outlines how ABM can support customer retention, upsell, and cross-sell efforts by building long-term relationships. About the guest Amanda is a 20-year B2B SaaS marketing veteran. She has run regional and global teams. She has a passion for people and results and a proven track record of success. She has held leadership positions in sales and marketing, including ABM, partnerships, demand gen, field and corporate marketing for global Supply Chain Management (SCM) and Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) companies. When she's not growing people or pipeline at leading tech companies, she enjoys spending time with her family in the mountains or at the beach, running daily, and practicing mindfulness. Connect with Amanda Dyson Key takeaways- Lead with customer pain points rather than product features to build trust. - Collaboration between sales and marketing is required through an account nomination process and campaign planning sessions. - Focus ABM efforts to avoid trying to sell everything at once and "boil the ocean." - Leverage ABM for existing customers through custom landing pages and insider advocates to drive retention, upsell, and cross-sell. - Overcommunicate ABM strategies internally through a living overview deck and consistent updates on calls and materials. Quotes"ABM is probably my favorite type of marketing because it can be disruptive and provocative. And, honestly, it's just all about the customer and how to stand out to them." -Amanda Dyson Recommended Resource Books-"How Women Rise" by Sally Helgesen and Marshall Goldsmith -"Radical Candor" by Kim Scott -"Amp It Up" by Frank Slootman -Fiction books by Kristin Hannah and Frederick Bachman Connect with Amanda Dyson | Follow us on LinkedIn | Website

Sally Helgesen is a speaker, coach, bestselling author, and leading expert on women's leadership. She has written or co-written eight books, including her latest, Rising Together. “The best assessment tool is to listen to your people. They talk about “we” when they're talking about the organization - you're on pretty good track to have an inclusive culture. If they talk about “they” you don't have it. Save your money. Don't do an assessment and just listen to how people talk.” Sally Helgesen, cited in Forbes as the world's premier expert on women's leadership, is an internationally best-selling author, speaker and leadership coach. She has been inducted into the Thinkers 50 Hall of Fame, which honors those whose ideas have shaped the field of leadership worldwide. What habits get in your way at work? Are there any instances in the workplace that may be limiting you? Are you comfortable sharing your achievements and discussing how you specifically generated a result? Would you rather let your accomplishments speak for themselves? This habit of being reluctant to claim your achievements may resonate more with women. However, this episode is for everyone. Not only did these habits resonate with me, but I also became keenly aware of how our organizational structures can make it difficult for women to break them. Today's guest is best-selling author, speaker, and leadership coach Sally Helgesen. Sally was cited by Forbes as the world's premier expert on women's leadership and was inducted into the Thinkers 50 Hall of Fame. Her latest book, Rising Together: How We Can Bridge Divides and Create a More Inclusive Workplace, offers practical ways to build more inclusive relationships, teams, and workplaces. It examines the behaviors most likely to get in the way of successful women as they move forward in their careers. In today's episode, we examine how Sally's early experiences working in corporate America sparked her journey of becoming a women's leadership expert. We dive into the beliefs that can provide a foundation for habits that get in the way of women's efforts to rise. We also discuss her new book, Rising Together, and what we can do to build better work cultures of belonging and inclusion. Let's get some integrity in our spines, bring our attention to this moment, and learn from Sally Helgesen. Key Points: We cannot control what others think; we can only control how we act. It is essential to have honest conversations. Communicate what you're interested in. Being reluctant to talk about your aspirations doesn't serve you. Making a simple request is not always leveraging. It can be a chance to give others an opportunity to feel good about themselves. Set boundaries based on your values, and learn to say no without elaboration. During difficult situations, build awareness of your reaction and find a path where you can move more productively. Sally Helgesen: Rising Together Sally Helgesen has been cited by Forbes as the world's premier expert on women's leadership. She is a best-selling author, speaker and leadership coach. She has been named by Thinkers50 as one of the world's top 20 coaches and ranked number 6 among the world's thought leaders by Global Gurus. She co-authored How Women Rise, with executive coach Marshall Goldsmith, examining the behaviors most likely to get in the way of successful women. Her newest book is Rising Together: How We Can Bridge Divides and Create a More Inclusive Workplace*. When we get triggered, our default response tends to be either venting about it to others or suffering in silence. In this conversation, Sally and I explore how to respond in a more useful way. She invites us to consider being less invested in our initial response, creating an alternative script, and finding a path forward to influence different behavior. Key Points When we get triggered, our tendency is to either vent about it or suffer in silence. Being overly invested in our first response limits our ability to respond better. This is the authenticity trap. Create an alternative, positive script that helps your own mental well-being and precipitates a more helpful action. Whether the alternative script is true or not isn't the point. The aim is to find the line between not humiliating the other party and also not letting a poor behavior be unaddressed. Wisdom from Sun Tzu: indirection or redirection to disarm an opponent is preferable to the direct engagement of combat. In this episode of Let Go & Lead, renowned author and leadership coach Marshall Goldsmith talks with Maril about the hard work of becoming a better leader — work that is, in his words, “incredibly easy to understand and difficult to do.” Across this wide-ranging conversation, Marshall and Maril touch on cognitive dissonance theory, and the “superstition trap” that leaders often fall into. Marshall introduces the idea of happiness as a product of alignment between aspirations, ambitions and day-to-day actions; and the deep mindset shift to go from being a high individual achiever to an effective leader of an organization. "Slow, fast, slow is how you grow." You know those moments when you're chatting with someone, and it's so interesting that time just flies by? That's how I felt when speaking with Whitney Johnson! In today's episode "Smart Growth: How Managers Can Grow Themselves, Their People, and Their Business" Whitney talks about her brand new book, Smart Growth, and how new managers can use it to create a breakthrough in 2022. Whitney was named one of the top ten most influential management thinkers by Thinkers50 in 2021, and is CEO of Disruption Advisors, a tech-enabled talent development company. She is an award-winning author, a LinkedIn Top Voice (1.79M followers), and she frequently writes for both HBR and MIT Sloan Management Review. In this episode, you'll learn: The framework known as the S Curve of Learning, and how to apply it meaningfully in your own development How to navigate through the three phases of growth (Launch Point, Sweet Spot, and Mastery) How to use the S Curve Insight Tool to develop and grow your people How this piano-playing music major ended up on Wall Street (cue Working Girl theme song)... and a lot more! The S-Curve of Learning Slow-fast-slow is how you grow. And when you understand the emotional arc of your growth, then you'll be able to increase your learning and growing capacity as well. That's what we call the S-Curve of learning. The Influential Role of the Manager The first thing that you want to really examine is do you actually want to be a manager? I meet lots of people who say I'm good at motivating people and inspiring people, but I'm not good at the day to day of managing people, and that's okay. You want to know that before you get into the job because you have a lot of influence on people, and so you want to make sure you're up for that kind of job. Managing People Who Have Mastered Their Job People start becoming bored once they mastered something because they are no longer challenged. So for your people who are already very good at their job, what will make them grow is when you give them a new challenge. From that point on, growth may seem slower, but they'll be able to unlock new levels in their professional journey. THIS EPISODE IS PERFECT FOR… anyone who has felt a sense of regret stemming from the series of choices that make up our lives - this episode is meant to inspire us to seek meaning, get unstuck, and finally muster the strength within to make that change. TODAY'S MAIN MESSAGE… it takes a long time to identify what isn't working in our lives, and even longer to realize that it doesn't have to be that way. We must to be honest with ourselves about what gives us joy in life so we can create an environment where we can thrive. Ultimately, what matters most is that you have some sense of purpose for why you're living, that you're achieving something that seems important to you, and that you enjoy the process of doing it all in your day-to-day life. WHAT I LOVE MOST… Marshall emphasizes that here is no magic moment when everything in life is going to be great. The uncertainty of life's ups and downs are about the only thing we can count on, so instead focus on the one thing you can control – your outlook on life. We may be given life, but life itself is not a given. It is to be earned. In this episode, we speak with Dr. Marshall Goldsmith about what it means to live a deliberate life, avoid regret, and achieve an ‘earned life.' For Dr. Goldsmith, an earned life occurs when our risks, efforts, and commitments are aligned with a higher purpose, regardless of the results. Those of us who are self-employed entrepreneurs are usually ambitious and focused on results. But in this fascinating conversation, Dr. Goldsmith wisely advises us to never base our self-worth on results, and never assume happiness comes from results. Rather, you can choose fulfillment, regardless of results. Dr. Marshall Goldsmith is a member of the Thinkers 50 Hall of Fame. He is the only two-time Thinkers 50 #1 Leadership Thinker in the World.
