Like much of the country, the last year has seen people picking up new skills to pass the time, from cooking, yoga or becoming knitting experts. But what about the small things that many people have learned before adulthood? In this set of programmes, journalist Kieran Yates explores how adopting seemingly simple skills in later life - that maybe we missed out on learning when we were younger, or that we have to face now - can lead to radical changes in our well-being. In this programme she speaks to Yewande Adesida, a cyclist who, in her twenties, decided to switch from her career as a competitive rower to a racing track cyclist. Kieran meets Yewande at Herne Hill velodrome and asks her just how much getting on a bike as an adult opened up the world for her, and as somebody who can't ride a bike herself, sees if Yewande can help get her pedalling. A bushfire raging in Perth's east is threatening lives and property, according to an urgent warning issued by the state's emergency authorities. The Wooroloo blaze an hour to the city's east continues to burn, with an “act immediately to survive” directive issued for more than a dozen areas, while some residents have been told “it's too late to leave and leaving now would be deadly”.There are reports up to 20 houses have already been lost.An emergency warning is in place for The Vines, Bailup, Ellenbrook, Gidgegannup, Milledon, Walyunga National Park, Upper Swan, Aveley, Wundowie, Red Hill, Belhus, Baskerville, Herne Hill, Bullsbrook, Wooroloo and Brigadoon.Residents in surrounding areas have been told to be on alert by the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, with continued unpredictable weather creating a risk to suburbs.“You need to shelter in your home in a room away from the fire front and make sure you can easily escape,” the warning states.“You must shelter before the fire arrives, as the extreme heat will kill you well before the flames reach you.“If your home catches on fire and the conditions inside become unbearable, you need to get out and go to an area that has already been burnt.”More than 250 firefighters fought the blaze overnight as hot and windy conditions lashed the area, with DFES spokesman Superintendent Peter Sutton saying the crews have braved “erratic fire behaviour”, according to The West.“We have a number of properties lost. Our rapid damage assessment team is working on that. But there is no known loss of life,” he said.“The perimeter of the fire is around 60km, so it is very large and the fire has spotted 3.2km from the head of the fire and crossed the river.”Inspector Sutton said houses in Avon Bridge Estate and Shady Hills were under “imminent threat”, revealing crews had little success overnight, but there were no reports of injuries. The Wooroloo fire is part of the Perth metropolitan area region plunged into a five-day lockdown due to the hotel quarantine coronavirus scare revealed on Sunday. The DFES has told anyone who is forced to break the strict lockdown to avoid a fire threat to wear a face mask and adhere to social distancing measures.

28 Jan 2013 Soan MaryAnn Nunhead American Radio with Lewis Schaffer. The only radio program for Americans living in Nunhead and for all Nunheaders, with a special focus on the increasingly in-demand area of Nunhead Heights. Download NAR_28th_January_2013.mp3 What an amazing show with first time guest MaryAnn Broughton from Oregon and living in Nunhead Heights. A new Nunhead American and so lovely. Telling us how she met her English partner in Japan and about working for a Japanese bank. We have the nicest Americans in Nunhead. And the wonderful Martin Soan, who last time came into the show NAKED, was fully dressed and told us about his Pull the Other One comedy gigs at the Old Nun's Head and The Half Moon in Herne Hill. I love his energy! The Ukes played a very funny song about Cats are not for Christmas, plus a new weather related theme for Lisa Moyle's new weather report. I even read a secret phrase from Morganico over the air. Listener Representative Laura Synthesis Ninetyninepercent wrote a very funny poem and gave the show a rating of 22nd Best Show - and we have done over 100 - So top 20%. Thank you Laura for your input. Chris Dixon pulled the strings from in the studio above while Claudio ran the deck. Seven days and counting Beautiful people! Only one week remains until the curtain finally raises on one of the hottest little parties known to hit London. We're talking house music - vocal-tastic, pumping, uplifting, roof-raising, unapologetic music of the house variety - that's right! Doors open at 8.30pm on Friday March 26th at the Half Moon in Herne Hill, with DJs The Duchess and Ben Adiktion thoroughly primed to blow your minds. Guest list is filling up, we only have a limited amount of space so if you and yours want to be part of something incredibly special right from the very beginning, then send your names through to kat@getinpr.com. You have been warned ;) In the meantime, The Duchess dons some slightly electro pants but giving it the kind of twist only he knows how to do...

BE BEAUTIFUL PRESENTS… FRESH N UP March 26th 2010, 20:30 – 02:00 Halfmoon Pub, Herne Hill, SW16 Free before 23:00, £3 after It’s officially one week and counting until Be Beautiful presents… Fresh N Up rolls into town and irrevocably changes the way you view your London party landscape. IT’S TIME FOR LONDON TO FRESH N UP! Listen up London – it’s time for you to Fresh N Up! This is a call to arms to all the beautiful people, inside and out – it’s time to take our house back! On Friday March 26th, in the back end of a South London pub, something truly phenomenal will take place. Out of the ashes of electro, from the mire of dire and indistinct DJ mixes, a new day will dawn; an electrifying party will rise to take its place among the legends of disco, the hallowed hallways of house. This is no place for wall-flowers; this is the time to stand up and be counted – preferably on a podium. If you feel beautiful, if you feel gorgeous, if you feel delicious inside then this is the night you’ve been waiting for. Under the guidance of The Duchess and Ben Adiktion, we’ll take you on a trip through dirty disco beats and vocalistic heaven until we spit you back out onto the streets and into the gutters – but always looking up at the stars. For a mere taster of things to come, download the Be Beautiful In The Discotheque mix by The Duchess from our SoundCloud account now - http://soundcloud.com/be-beaut/beautifullfinishfeb10 Doors open at 8pm until 2am, guest list is available and wide open for the gorgeous so get in touch via MySpace, Facebook or mobile if you’re lucky enough to have our numbers ;) FRESH N UP @ THE HALF MOON PUB, HERNE HILL, SW24 8pm – 2am Free before 11pm - £3 after 11pm
