Did you know that the majority of corn seeds planted in the United States are coated with a powerful pesticide that harms pollinators, birds and other wildlife? Join Food Sleuth Radio host and Registered Dietitian, Melinda Hemmelgarn, for her interview with Elizabeth Hilborn, DVM, registered nurse, farmer and author of Restoring Eden: Unearthing the Agribusiness Secret that Poisoned my Farming Community (Chicago Review Press, 2023).  Hilborn recounts her tragic story about how neonicotinoid seed coatings washed onto her farm, and the resulting devastating impact on wildlife and garden crops. Hilborn connects the dots – agricultural practices/pesticides, lack of government oversight, and public and environmental health. Related website:  https://elizabethhilborn.com/

Restoring Eden: Unearthing the Agribusiness Secret That Poisoned My Farming Community with Elizabeth Hilborn As an environmental scientist trained to investigate disease outbreaks, Elizabeth Hilborn rose to the challenge. Step by step, day by day, despite facing headwinds from skeptical neighbors, environmental experts, and agricultural consultants, she'd assembled information. Her observations provided a framework, a timeline to explain the evidence she'd collected. The chemicals found in her water samples showed beyond any doubt that not only her farm, but her greater farming community, was at risk from toxic chemicals that travelled with rain water over the land, into water, and deep within the soil. Hilborn was given a front row seat to the insect apocalypse. Dr. Elizabeth D. Hilborn is a writer, a scientist and a veterinarian with expertise in honey bee medicine. For decades she's grown fruits and vegetables for her family and local community.Hilborn's scientific reports in epidemiology and environmental health science focus on the health effects associated with water pollution, emerging infections, and extreme weather events. She's served as an Epidemic Intelligence Service Fellow at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and is a senior staff scientist at the Environmental Protection Agency's Office of Research and Development. Dr. Elizabeth Hilborn, a honey bee veterinarian and environmental health scientist, soon realized the bees—the vital pollinators of fruits, plants, and vegetables—were dying. Everything was still and silent. In 2017, after a large flood, most of the teeming life on her beloved family farm in North Carolina had vanished in a matter of weeks. As a scientist and a naturalist, Hilborn set about to get answers: RESTORING EDEN: Unearthing the Agribusiness Secret That Poisoned My Farm Community (Chicago Review Press; August 8, 2023) is her story. With her farm suddenly lifeless, Hilborn was disoriented, bereft, and determined to understand. She documented the trail of death, taking water samples, scouring the internet, and calling every environmental expert, government agency, and agricultural consultant she could find. She got her first solid clue when she learned that a neighbor's tractor had been submerged in the floodwaters. What caused the sudden collapse of life on her farm? How was Dr. Hilborn able to unravel the mystery? Today we hear her story! Listen in! Welcome to a new series of OffScript, Wales Arts Review’s arts and culture podcast. We’re kicking off the second round of episodes with a bit of international stardom in the form of Neil Hilborn the American slam poet who shot to stardom in 2013 when a performance of his poem “OCD” was viewed over 62 million views online. Well, Neil is on his first tour of the UK and it kicked off in Wrexham where our very own Sophie McKeand, poet and Young Peoples Laureate for Wales, was there to interview him just before his performance. Hilborn talks about some of the most powerful themes in his work, those of mental illness and the stigma attached, how he has dealt with his fame, and also what it’s like to be a liberal Texan in the age of Trump.

We have a great interview for you today. Imagine this story, someone who never ran until after college, ran their first race, a marathon in 4 hours and 37 minutes, then just six years later they run an Olympic qualifier and are headed to Rio to run in the Olympics. This is not a hollywood movie script, this is the story of Ariana Holborn. Now on to the show. Had a chance to meet you and hear your story can you tell us about your long high school running career? You just ran in the Rio Olympics, so if you did not run in high school, how did you get your start? So your very first race ever was a marathon? Which one? So what did your running career look like after that first marathon, you obviously caught the bug. 2008 you run your first race and run a 4:37 marathon, then one year later you run a BQ? What was your training like? You went from 0 to 70 miles in a year, did you encounter any injuries? In 2010 you join John Reich's team, where did you go from there? What type of mileage are you doing when you prepare for a marathon? Coming into 2016 what was your thought process when deciding to run for Latvia for the Olympics? For their marathon team do they select or do trials? So you headed to Rio for your first Olympics, what was it like walking in the opening ceremonies? How did the race in Rio go for you? How long did you end up staying in Rio and did you get a chance to see any other events? So what was your training like the week down in Brazil? This episode of the Video StudentGuy is about the day I spent at Podcamp Boston last Sunday October 28. This is my first time attending a podcamp and I was really looking forward to it. Over all, it was a good experience. I'm sorry I couldn't have attended the previous day, I was in class There were a number of sessions specifically on video casting that I know would have been interesting. To top it off I was really tired, it was a busy busy week on all fronts. I never would have made it through the weekend if I attended both days. Next year I'll be done with school and I'll have a lot more time for user events like this.By the way, just after I posted this I found this link to a video recorded during lunch, Sunday I guess, from the sound of it. Fool that I am I went to the cafeteria and ate lunch! Anyway, its an ad hoc discussion about the value of the conference as the nature of new media and new media producers matures. I feel very strongly that those of us who are about to launch our careers in video should be up to our armpits in new media. This is our wave. Thanks to Bob Goyetche for recording and posting this video. On a side note there is a podcasting meetup that takes place monthly in the Boston area. CC Chapman is the contact person for this. It was on hiatus during the summer, but I spoke to him at end of the day Sunday and he said there will be something coming up soon. Like all meetups, its open to anyone, not just people producing podcasts. I hear about them mostly from Mark and Bob on the Canadian Podcast Buffet show, but I don't doubt they're friendly, congenial get-togethers no matter where they occur. One note about the show, I start out with a rant about the venue, the Boston Convention Center. I've got some pictures I need to put up on Flikr. Obviously it had a significant impact on me, but it doesn't in any significant way detract from the quality of the event, I just tend to notice UI issues and the convention center definitely has a UI problem. If you're not interested in listening to me go on and on about it, just move ahead to 4:18, thats when my review of the sessions I attended begins.I understand attendance was smaller Sunday than Saturday, and it felt somewhat subdued, so I didn't get a chance to meet a lot of people, but everyone I spoke with was happy to talk and share their ideas and knowledge.Guido Stein - it's a Purl, man - knitting podcastJane Quigley - Digital Grit - exchanged cards, though I don have a card yetBen Ortega - Phive Tacos - another cardFaye Anderson - Anderson@Large - Citizen Jouralist - local politics, we had a nice conversation about the role of podcasting in political actionC.C.
