Rereleased in memory of Jan Gorski-Mescir. In this special edition of Scouser Tommies, Jim Boardman and Jan Gorski-Mescir discussed the career of Liverpool legend Ray Kennedy after his death at the age of 70. Bill Shankly's last signing, Ray would go on to be a key part of the Bob Paisley era, instrumental in the Reds making that step up from regular league title winners to regular European title winners. In Paisley's words, Ray was “one of Liverpool's greatest players and probably the most underrated” Learn more about your ad choices. Visit podcastchoices.com/adchoices

It'll be released on Friday, but Craig's been listening for a few weeks and finds it rich with personal details, sharp melodies, and an old school Americana spirit that evokes Lucinda Williams or Kathleen Edwards. Season 3: Happy to “Be in That Crowd” -- Americana Music Pioneer Jeff Hanna of NGBD Reflects on Those Around Him Rather Than His Career

Coming down the homestretch of Season Three of The Load Out Music Podcast, we settle into our new digs in one of the great music venues in St. Louis – The Old Rock House. Most important, we welcome yet another Grammy Award winner in Jeff Hanna, founder and longest serving member of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. In the 1960s, the Detroit-native landed in Long Beach, California, where music was being transformed. The sounds of folk, rock, country, bluegrass and blues were being blended in from San Francisco to Los Angeles into what is today considered roots, Americana or alt-country. But it was the bands at that time, in that place that were doing it – The Byrds and Flying Burrito Brothers (both led by past guest Chris Hillman), Poco, Emmylou Harris, New Riders of the Purple Sage, The Buffalo Springfield, Linda Rondstadt Crosby, Stills and Nash, the Grateful Dead, Joni Mitchell and, of course, the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. Hanna started hanging out at McCabe's guitar shop with a cast of characters that would shape the alt-country movement: Les Thompson, Jimmie Faddon, Ralph Barr, the legendary Jackson Browne and other founding or future members of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band (NGDB) such as former Load Out guest John McEuen. NGBD's first big hit was a cover of Jerry Jeff Walker's “Mr. Bojangles.” But when the legendary Earl Scruggs and Doc Watson agreed to record with NGDB, it set in motion a recording effort in Nashville akin to The Band's Last Waltz documentary film and album. It was released in 1972 as Will the Circle Be Unbroken, which is in the Grammy Hall of Fame as well as The Library of Congress. Rolling Stone called the first record (there were ultimately three), “The most important record to come out of Nashville” and a 2004 ZAGAT survey called it “the most important record in country music.” True to form, Hanna just downplayed it and instead applauded those around him. “I think most of just felt like, how lucky are we get to make records,” he told me. “It was such a communal project.” All along, Hanna – in and out of NGBD – has succeeded. From the NGBD's start in 1966 to its 1985 country number one song "Modern Day Romance,” followed up by the smash hit "Fishin' in the Dark" in 1987. The song Hanna co-wrote with Marcus Hummon and Bobby Boyd in 1994, "Bless the Broken Road," won a Best Country Grammy Award for Rascal Flatts in 2006. Most recently, Hanna and NGBD – now featuring Hanna's son Jaime on vocals and guitar – has taken on another American institution near and dear to their hearts in Bob Dylan's songbook. Dirt Does Dylan, a ten-track album highlighting some of the gems from Dylan's vast catalog, was just released with stellar cuts of songs like “It Takes a Lot to Laugh, It Takes a Train to Cry,” “Forever Young” and other Dylan hits. Throughout our conversation, Hanna spends most of his time heaping praise on everyone in his circle but himself. From his longtime NGBD bandmates to his wife Matraca Berg and son, contributors to Circle like Levon Helm, producer Ray Kennedy and others – Hanna's intention is summed up in how he described the experience of recording Will the Circle Be Unbroken. “I'm so happy to be in that crowd.” Please enjoy the latest episode of The Load Out Music Podcast with founder Jeff Hanna of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band.

In the newest episode of Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums, we dive into Lucinda Williams' 1998 masterpiece "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road," an album that helped define modern roots music and got Williams' long-overdue recognition as one of America's greatest songwriters. The album took six years, three producers, and some label drama to make, but Williams' perfectionism resulted in an arguably perfect album. Williams joins Rolling Stone Country's Joseph Hudak to tell the stories behind songs like "Drunken Angel", and title track "Car Wheels on a Gravel Road" that affected Williams' father so much he apologized to Williams when he first heard it. Producers Steve Earle and Ray Kennedy in addition to Waxahatchee help flesh out the story. Later in the episode, Rolling Stone staffers Claire Shaffer and Jon Freeman join host Brittany Spanos to discuss the album's legacy.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

Her er temaene: (NB! See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

“It's hard to know how people are gonna react,” Chris Knight says of Almost Daylight, his ninth album and first new recording in over seven years. “I've written songs about a lot of different things going all the way back to my first record, and some folks still think ‘somebody kills somebody' is all I write about. Maybe that's why I was bound and determined to get these particular songs on this album. If people like them, then we'll be fine. But I wasn't gonna do it any other way.”For the past 20 years, Chris Knight has only made music his own way. He's released eight acclaimed albums, played thousands of electrifying live shows and built generations of fervent fans from Texas honky-tonks to Manhattan rock clubs. He's been hailed as “the last of a dying breed...a taciturn loner with an acoustic guitar and a college degree” (The New York Times) and “a storyteller in the best traditions of Mellencamp and Springsteen” (USA Today). Bottom line, he's hard-earned his reputation as one of America's most uncompromising and respected singer/songwriters. And now with Almost Daylight, Knight delivers the most powerful – and unexpected – music of his career.Almost Daylight is very much a Chris Knight album, familiarly featuring vivid pictures of rural characters, desperate men and hardscrabble survivors. At the same time it's unlike anything Knight has done before, with formidable testaments to compassion, redemption and even straight-up love. It's an album both tough and tender, as bare-knuckled as it is open-hearted. “I do think there's a cohesiveness to this album,” Knight explains in his thick Kentucky rasp.“The title is key, I suppose. Through all these songs, you could find a theme about seeking shelter.”Produced, mixed and mastered by Grammy-winner Ray Kennedy – best-known for his 30+ year creative partnership with Steve Earle as well as producing Chris' Enough Rope (2006),Trailer II (2009) and Little Victories (2012) albums – Almost Daylight also sounds like no other Knight record, with scorching guitars by Georgia Satellites founder and two-time Knight album producer Dan Baird, rich background vocals by Chris Clark, Siobhan Kennedy and Lee Ann Womack, and deeper instrumentation than ever before. “Chris had been playing some of these songs on the road and started developing ideas before we got to the studio,” Kennedy says. “He and I talked about keeping the Appalachian factor with banjo, fiddle, harmonica and mandolin where it felt right. It was significant that Dan was involved, as he's the man who can play guitar with the right feeling for Chris. The background vocals really brought the fire, and this lead to ideas for piano, Hammond B-3, accordion and Wurlitzer electric piano. Everything evolved from the performance of each song and I let the songs dictate what they needed in order to evolve into an album.”“I was determined not to do any acoustic songs on this album,” Chris explains. “I wanted it all to sound edgy and raw, but to feel big at the same time. We kept trying different approaches until I felt we landed on what worked. The thing is, some of my songs might take a year of writing before I even think they're ready for recording and I fretted about every one of these. I've never put a cover song on any of my records before, but there are two covers on this one. And I think it all fits together pretty good.”The album opens with “I'm William Callahan”, a defiant roar fueled by equal parts pride, memories and searing guitar. “Crooked Mile” is classic Knight, a piercing take on outsiders bound by love, while the poignant “Send It On Down” is a plaintive plea for salvation. There are tales of small-town despair (“I Won't Look Back”), ominous rural menace (“Trouble Up Ahead”) and melancholic break-ups (“Everybody's Lonely Now”). Chris' cover of Johnny Cash's “Flesh And Blood” – which originally appeared on the Dualtone 2002   (Read more at http://www.chrisknight.net)

There are tales of small-town despair (“I Won't Look Back”), ominous rural menace (“Trouble Up Ahead”) and melancholic break-ups (“Everybody Read more at www.chrisknight.net

Mr. Cole.

For this episode we spoke to Siobhan Maher Kennedy. Siobhan is possibly best known as the singer with Liverpool band, River City People, as well as being a Children’s TV presenter and actress. River City People released two albums in the late 80s and early 90s; Say Something Good and This Is The World. They had their biggest chart success with a cover of California Dreamin’, originally released by Mamas and Papas. After the band split, Siobhan joined Kindred Spirit with Debbie Peterson of the Bangles. For the last 26 years, Siobhan has lived in Nashville, USA where she is married to record producer, Ray Kennedy. Her first solo album, Immigrant Flower, co-produced by Ray and Steve Earle, was released to critical acclaim in 2002. We spoke to Siobhan about the loss of her friend and songwriting legend, John Prine, her Liver Girls project supporting young breakthrough artists in Liverpool and of course, the song she wish she wrote, a song by Tom Paxton released in 1964. By the time they released their seventh studio album, Out of the Blue,  British rock band E.L.O., also known as the Electric Light Orchestra was a successful machine for rock hits with a “Beatleseque Pop” sound.  The Beatles connection was not random, as guitarist and founding member Roy Wood wanted to introduce strings, violins, cellos, basses, horns and woodwinds to Rock music, and “pick up where the Beatles left off.”  ELO was formed by Wood on guitar, Bev Bevan on drums, and Jeff Lynne on  vocals and guitars.  Over time Lynne would become  synonymous with the group.  Out of the Blue is a double album written by Jeff Lynne in less than a month.  He was staying in a chalet in the Swiss Alps and couldn't come up with any songs during several weeks of dreary weather.  One day the sun came out, and an incredible burst of creativity came upon Lynne as a result.  The album makes extensive use of strings, and also a vocoder to produce unusual sounds.  The album was accompanied by a tremendous special effects-laden stage show and tour.  Jeff Lynne acquired the rights to the name Electric Light Orchestra from co-founder Bev Bevan in 1999, and tours as Jeff Lynne's ELO today.Sit back and enjoy - “there ain't a cloud in sight!” Turn to StoneThis track opens the album.  Jeff Lynne stated in a Rolling Stone interview that this is one of his most favorite songs — he loves the "shuffle beat."  It was the first singe from the album, and reached number 13 on the US Billboard chart.Wild West HeroThis is a deeper cut from the album, with a softer, wistful sound and great harmonies.  Westerns were a popular genre when Lynne was growing up.  The band's cello player played the honky tonk piano.  Supposedly Jeff Lynne wrote this in 4 minutes.Standin' in the RainSide three of the double album is subtitled “Concerto for a Rainy Day,” with four tracks about the weather.  This deeper cut leads off the concerto, and you can hear a vocoder about 30 seconds in, with a thunder crackle voicing the words "Concerto for a Rainy Day."Mr. Blue SkyThis well known song is the final track from “Concerto for a Rainy Day,” at which point the sun comes out.  The major key and fast pace give this song an amazingly optimistic feel.  Rob wants this played at his funeral — “Never mind I’ll remember you this way.”   ENTERTAINMENT TRACK:“That's All Right” Elvis PresleyThe last concert recorded by The King before his death was broadcast in this month.  Elvis had passed two months earlier in August 1977. STAFF PICKS:Brick House by The CommodoresBruce's staff pick started as a jam originated by bassist Ronald LaPread.  Producer James Carmichael challenged the band to turn it into a song.  Band member William King brought it home and his wife, Shirley Hanna-King wrote the lyrics based off the expression “built like a brick $#@!-house.”  Drummer Walter “Clyde” Orange sings lead instead of their normal front man, Lionel Ritchie, because the band thought he had the right funky voice for it.Strawberry Letter 23  by The Brothers JohnsonBrian keeps up the R&B flavor with this Quincy Jones' produced song.  It tells the story of the 23rd love letter between two lovers.Whips and Furs   by The VibratorsYou can count on Wayne for a deeper punk cut.  He discovered this on a compilation album.  Good new-fashioned rock! Isn't It Time  by The BabysRob's staff pick was penned by Babys bass guitarist Jack Conrad and songwriter Ray Kennedy.  It is Kennedy's story about falling in love with a Mademoiselle.  The song alternates between a soft and hard rock sound, and the chorus goes back and forth between the left and right channels.  “I just can't find the answers to the questions that keep going through my mind, Hey Babe...isn't it time?” INSTRUMENTAL TRACK:The Iron Dream by HawkwindWe finish off this week's podcast with a prog rock instrumental piece.

James and Kami Walbourne are The Rails, a husband and wife duo from London. “Fair Warning”, their first album was called by Mojo magazine the best folk album of 2014. Their newest CD, “Other People” broadens their sound and if possible is even better. James is the lead guitarist for The Pretenders and Kami is the daughter of Richard and Linda Thompson. This podcast was recorded with them in New York the morning after a very successful gig at The Mercury Lounge just before returning to London. Most anything you would want to discuss is covered in the conversation, their roots, musical and otherwise, their recent recording in Nashville with producer Ray Kennedy, their admiration for a varied list of fellow musicians and of course favorite guitars. Catch them live if you can. Their songs and their harmony singing will convince you that we will emerge from these Dark Times into a brighter future. Who doesn’t want some of that?

Don Pedigo will be joining us this coming Tuesday night March 3, 2015 at the Act One Pub as our special guest for the CAU Singing For Your Supper Showcase Series. Come join us in welcoming Don to the Chciago Music Scene'Don Pedigo's latest project THE CROSS EYED SESSIONS is a musical composition reflective of the life experiences of peaks in heartfelt love and valleys in endured hardships of the everyday working man. A presentation crafted in a devotion to the art of creating a style unique, the collection of songs reveals one of the Americana movement's most honest and compelling talents. Born in Freetown, IN, Pedigo's mid-western charm is matched by his ability to capture a listening audience with handcrafted lyrics, expressive vocals and Chet-like pickin'. With the will and work ethic of a Heartlander, Pedigo's passion led him to the heart of Music City where life as a recording artist, songwriter, musician, husband, father and friend shaped a sonic chapter of Pedigo's life called THE CROSS EYED SESSIONS. Mastered by five-time Grammy Award winning producer Ray Kennedy, the project captures the authentic and organic recording process within each song. Arriving in Nashville, he caught the ear of legendary songwriter Earl Bud Lee ("Friends In Low Places"/Garth Brooks, "Who Are You When I'm Not Looking"/Blake Shelton) who nurtured Pedigo's inherent song-crafting ability. In 2006, Pedigo recorded his first full-production record WHAT I WAS RUNNING FROM (featuring Buddy Miller on guitar) and released the single "Mama's Wedding Gown" (produced by Larry Crane) the following year. The complementary music video qualified the tune as a finalist on the CMT Music City Madness Singer/Songwriter's Competition Top 20 Video Countdown dubbing Pedigo as "the hard-rocking heartthrob from the heartland."
