On the version of Hot off the Wire posted Jan. 26 at 7 a.m. CT: ATMORE, Ala. (AP) — Alabama has executed a man with nitrogen gas, putting him to death with a first-of-its-kind method that once again put the U.S. at the forefront of the debate over capital punishment. Officials said Kenneth Eugene Smith was pronounced dead at 8:25 p.m. Thursday at an Alabama prison. It marked the first time a new execution method has been used since lethal injection was introduced in 1982. The execution came after a last-minute legal battle in which Smith’s attorneys said the state was making him the test subject for an experimental execution method that could violate the constitutional ban on cruel and unusual punishment. Smith was one of two men convicted in the 1988 murder-for-hire slaying of Elizabeth Sennett, a pastor’s wife. NEW YORK (AP) — Closing arguments are set to begin in the defamation case against Donald Trump a day after the former president left a Manhattan courtroom fuming after his 3-minute testimony gave him little time to refute a writer's sexual abuse claims. On Friday, lawyers on both sides will get to sum up their case for nine jurors who will start deliberating later in the day. The jury will decide what, if anything, Trump owes magazine columnist E. Jean Carroll. A jury last year found Trump sexually abused her in spring 1996 in the changing room of a luxury Manhattan department store. Trump denies it. MOSCOW (AP) — A Moscow court extended the pretrial detention of Evan Gershkovich, a Wall Street Journal reporter who was detained on espionage charges, through March in a Friday ruling. A 32-year-old United States citizen, Gershkovich was arrested in the city of Yekaterinburg while on a reporting trip to Russia in late March 2023. He and his employer deny the allegations, and the U.S. government declared him to be wrongfully detained. Russian authorities have not provided any evidence to support the espionage charges. Gershkovich is the first American reporter to to face espionage charges in Russia since September 1986, when Nicholas Daniloff, a Moscow correspondent for U.S. News and World Report, was arrested by the KGB. LONDON (AP) — Buckingham Palace says King Charles III was admitted to a private hospital to undergo a “corrective procedure” for an enlarged prostate. That announcement Friday confirms a pre-planned treatment that was announced last week. The 75-year old king will be treated at the London Clinic, where the Princess of Wales is recovering after undergoing abdominal surgery. The king visited Kate at the hospital after he arrived. Charles, who acceded to the throne 16 months ago, was diagnosed with the benign condition on Jan. 17 after going for a check-up because he was experiencing symptoms. He cancelled engagements, and was urged to rest ahead of the procedure. KYIV, Ukraine (AP) — Russia and Ukraine keep trading accusations over the crash of a Russian plane that Moscow said was carrying Ukrainian POWs, but one thing is clear: Many Ukrainians whose relatives are imprisoned in Russia are afraid this could mark the end of prisoner exchanges. Even the basic facts surrounding the crash remain unclear. Russian officials accuse Kyiv of shooting down the plane. Russia claims that 65 Ukrainian prisoners of war were on board as they headed for a prisoner swap. The Ukrainian side said it has no evidence of POWs. It has said, however, that an exchange was planned for Wednesday. Neither side has provided evidence. And relatives and loved ones are in vulnerable states, with no answers. COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) — The Republican National Committee has pulled a resolution to consider declaring Donald Trump the party’s “presumptive 2024 nominee” before he formally clinches the requisite number of delegates. That's according to a person familiar with the decision who was not authorized to publicly discuss the proposal and spoke on condition of anonymity Thursday night. News of the withdrawal came shortly after Trump posted on his Truth Social site that he “greatly” appreciated the notion but felt, “for the sake of PARTY UNITY," that he should win the contest at the ballot box. A candidate needs 1,215 requisite delegates to secure the nomination. Trump currently has 32 delegates to Nikki Haley’s 17. WASHINGTON (AP) — The nation’s economy grew at an unexpectedly brisk 3.3% annual pace from October through December as Americans showed a continued willingness to spend freely despite high interest rates and price levels that have frustrated many households. The latest figures reflected the surprising durability of the world’s largest economy, marking the sixth straight quarter in which GDP has grown at an annual pace of 2% or more. Consumers drove the fourth-quarter growth. Their spending expanded at a 2.8% annual rate, for items ranging from clothing, furniture, recreational vehicles and other goods to services like hotels and restaurant meals. The GDP report also showed that despite the robust pace of growth, inflationary measures continued to ease. More Americans filed jobless benefits last week but layoffs remain at historically low levels despite elevated interest rates and a flurry of job cuts in the media and technology sectors. Applications for unemployment benefits rose to 214,000 for the week ending Jan. 20, an increase of 25,000 from the previous week, the Labor Department reported Thursday. Overall, 1.83 million Americans were collecting jobless benefits during the week that ended Jan. 13, an increase of 27,000 from the previous week. Weekly unemployment claims are viewed as representative for the number of U.S. layoffs in a given week. WASHINGTON (AP) — The maker of Robitussin is recalling several lots of cough syrup due to contamination that could pose a serious risk to people with weakened immune systems. The recall affects eight lots of Robitussin cough syrup for adults containing honey. The Food and Drug Administration posted the company’s announcement to its website Wednesday. The company says the products may contain dangerously high levels of yeast. Yeast is a natural component of honey, but the levels detected by the company were beyond allowed measurements. The recalled products were Honey CF Max Day Adult and Robitussin Honey CF Max Nighttime Adult cough syrups. Haleon says it has not received any reports of injury or infection linked to the products. The Pacers snap the 76ers winning streak, Jaylen Brunson's big night helps the Knicks beat the Nuggets, Nikita Kucherov's three-point night leads the Lightning over the Coyotes, two more NFL teams fill their vacant head coach positions, and finalists for the NFL's end-of-season awards are announced. BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) — Authorities say New England Patriots wide receiver Kayshon Boutte has been arrested on charges related to illegal online gambling while he was under age and playing at Louisiana State University. Boutte is accused of creating an online betting account under a fake name and then placing more than 8,900 illegal bets. State police said six were wagers on LSU football. Baton Rouge news outlets reported that an arrest affidavit alleges that two of the bets were on an LSU game that Boutte played in. State police say bets were made while Boutte was still under the age of 21 and not legally allowed to gamble. Melanie, a singer-songwriter behind 1970s hits including “Brand New Key,” has died. Melanie's publicist tells The Associated Press that she died Tuesday. She was 76. Born Melanie Safka, the singer rose through the New York folk scene and was one of only three solo women to perform at Woodstock. Her hits included “Lay Down” and “Look What They've Done to My Song Ma.” But she was best known for “Brand New Key,” a song she wrote about a girl who roller skates past the house of a boy she longs for. It went to No. 1 in the U.S. and several other countries and became a cultural staple. —The Associated Press About this program Host Terry Lipshetz is managing editor of the national newsroom for Lee Enterprises. This week we catch up with a couple ol' timers. First up is 80s heartland rocker Henry Lee Summer. In the late 80s, Henry scored a couple big hits with "Wish I Had a Girl" and "Hey Baby" and cut a memorable image with his giant mullet and tight jeans. Times got tough for Henry there for a while - drug addiction, arrests, bankruptcy, divorce etc - but he's working his way back with a new album. Then we hear from Melanie of Woodstock and "Brand New Key" fame. Melanie's still at it and tours frequently (but doesn't make any money off "Key" which is shocking) and has a new album called The Magic Bus which is a radio station visit she made back in 1972. She tells the complete story of Woodstock and more. Enjoy! www.henryleesummer.com www.melaniesafka.com

Let's get this out of the way right now: Melanie is technically a two hit wonder and an influential singer-songwriter powerhouse whose songs have been covered by some of the most beloved artists in music history. Despite all that, the average joe — aka all of us on this podcast — only know “Brand New Key”, the unintentionally sexual song that made a huge impression on many of us thanks to its association with a certain movie character on roller skates. Rob and Matt talk with legendary singer / songwriter MELANIE! We talk to Melanie about her experience at the original woodstock as one of only 3 solo performers. Melanie goes into great detail about her experience; Starting with the moment she first heard of woodstock, flying for the first time in a helicopter and taking the stage in front of a massive audience (unlike anything she ever experienced). We also talk about: Her #1 song (in 1970) BRAND NEW KEY and how she came up with the idea for the song (you won't believe what it was). Performing with Miley Cyrus (Backyard Sessions) Melanie's new album MAGIC BUS. This is a radio interview and music from 1972. We loved talking to Melanie and reliving many memories with her and you'll love this interview. *********** A little bit about Melanie: Melanie landed in the New York City music and radio scene in the late 1960's. Her first single Beautiful People immediately became a turntable hit. Her first tour began with an impressive 40-day run of shows at Paris' world-famous L'Olympia Theater at the personal invitation of Bruno Coquatrix. In the years to come she would entertain millions: at An Aquarian Exposition (the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), at Carnegie Hall, and the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury music festivals, The Sydney Opera House, the South Korean DMZ, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Royal Albert Hall, and other theaters, halls and beloved music clubs around the globe. Melanie launched Neighborhood Records, making her the first American woman to open a mainstream record label. She recorded over 20 chart hits and many have been re-recorded. Melanie received an Emmy after composing lyrics for the theme song of the hit television series Beauty and the Beast. “What Have They Done to My Song Ma” was re-recorded by Ray Charles with the Count Basie Band. Nina Simone delivered a remarkable rendition, as well. “(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain” was re-recorded by Mott the Hoople on their 1971 album Wildlife. Meredith Brooks and Queen Latifah later re-recorded the anthem. “Some Say (I Got Devil)" was re-recorded by Smith's frontman Morrissey. Melanie has always known her calling in life was to entertain. Audiences have welcomed her to the stage for more than fifty years, and she continues to perform today. ******** KNOW GOOD MUSIC can be found on Podbean (host site), Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Iheart Radio, Pandora and almost anywhere you listen to podcasts. Hello once again everyone I'm your host Ray Shasho and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends. The Dollyrots are Kelly Ogden on vocals and bass and Luis Cabezas (head) on guitar, with Justin McGrath on live drums. Their most recent release is Down The Rabbit Hole, a 24-track collection of B-sides, rarities, and cover songs with a Dollyrots twist. The diverse collection features songs from throughout the band's 20-year history, remastered and including previously unheard tracks and alternate takes. The band recently released a new 7” limited edition pink vinyl release in partnership with indie label juggernaut Cleopatra Records. The Dollyrots transform a soft rock classic, “Alone Again (Naturally)” originally recorded in 1972 by Gilbert O'Sullivan, into a fun, fist-pumping punk rock anthem! That track is backed with an original song entitled “That's Not Even All,” which highlights the band's double threat as both arrangers and writers! The trio has hit the Billboard Heatseekers chart multiple times, been featured in movies and television, and have shared stages with some of punk's biggest names. And they are currently working on new music to be released in 2023. On this show, I spoke with the ‘Awesome' Kelly Ogden of The Dollyrots. Her bandmate Luis Cabeza was with us in spirit. Their infectious brand of indie pop/punk rock has covered the gamut from fun, in your face, rock n' roll jams like “Everything”, “Because I'm Awesome” and “Brand New Key” to touching and unexpected covers like “Earth Angel” by The Penguins and Little Eva's “Turkey Trot”. Just yesterday they embarked on their 'Down the Rabbit Hole' US tour which kicks off on July 14th in New Jersey at The Saint and wraps on October 9th in San Diego at the Kensington Club. I'm super stoked to have ‘em on the show. Join me in welcoming the hare-raising Dollyrots to The MOG, ‘Because, well, they really are awesome!' Melanie Safka — generally referred to by her first name only — epitomized the persona of the eternal flower child, a shy, waif-like woman whose memorable appearance at Woodstock summed up the sentiments of the time — innocent, unassuming and with songs that resonated with the optimism of the age. Her work shared that sweet sensibility, as reflected in songs such as “Beautiful People,” “Brand New Key,” “Peace Will Come,” and “What Have They Done to My Song, Ma,” among the many. Now celebrating the 50th anniversary reissue of her landmark album Gather Me, as well as the half century reissue of her classic song “Brand New Key,” Melanie shares her story with "My Backstage Pass" as she looks back on a career that spawned well over 40 albums, some of which were released on her own record label, Neighborhood Records. That in itself was was an unheard of accomplishment at the time, one that came about as the result of her decision to defy her record company, ensure ownership of her material and make the music that she wanted to create. Melanie Anne Safka-Schekeryk, professionally known as Melanie or Melanie Safka, is an American singer-songwriter. She is best known for the 1971–72 global hit "Brand New Key", her cover of "Ruby Tuesday", her composition "What Have They Done to My Song Ma", and her 1970 international breakthrough hit "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)" (inspired by her experience of performing at the 1969 Woodstock music festival). In the 1960s, Melanie started performing at The Inkwell, a coffee house in the West End section of Long Branch, New Jersey. After high school, her parents insisted that she go to college, so she studied acting at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts in New York, where she began singing in the folk clubs of Greenwich Village, such as The Bitter End and signed her first recording contract.Initially signed to Columbia Records in the United States, Melanie released two singles on the label. Subsequently, she signed with Buddah Records and first found chart success in Europe in 1969 with "Bobo's Party" which reached No. 1 in France. Melanie's popularity in Europe resulted in performances on European television programs, such as Beat-Club in West Germany. Her debut album received positive reviews from Billboard, which heralded her voice as "wise beyond her years. Her non-conformist approach to the selections on this LP make her a new talent to be reckoned with."Later in 1969, Melanie had a hit in the Netherlands with "Beautiful People". She was one of only three solo women who performed at the Woodstock Festival in 1969 and the inspiration for her first hit song, "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)", apparently arose from the Woodstock audience lighting candles during her set (although most of the "candles" were actually matches or lighters). The recording became a hit in Europe, Australia, Canada, and the United States in 1970. The B-side of the single featured Melanie's spoken-word track "Candles in the Rain". "Lay Down" became Melanie's first top ten hit in America, peaking at No. 6 on the Billboard singles chart and achieving worldwide success. Later hits included "Peace Will Come (According To Plan)" and a cover of the Rolling Stones' "Ruby Tuesday".In 1970, Melanie was the only artist to ignore the court injunction banning the Powder Ridge Rock Festival scheduled to be held on July 31, August 1 and 2, 1970. She played for the crowd on a homemade stage powered by Mister Softee trucks. Shortly following this performance, she played at the Strawberry Fields Festival held from August 7 to 9, 1970, at Mosport Park, Ontario. She also performed at the Isle of Wight Festival held between August 26 and 30, 1970, at Afton Down, where she was introduced by Keith Moon and received four standing ovations (she also appeared at the 2010 Isle of Wight festival). She was also the artist who sang to herald in the summer solstice at Glastonbury Fayre (later the Glastonbury Festival) in England, in June 1971. She performed again at Glastonbury in 2011, the 40th anniversary of the original festival.Melanie left Buddah Records when they insisted that she produce albums on demand. In 1971, she formed her own label, Neighborhood Records, with Peter Schekeryk who was also her producer and husband. She had her biggest American hit on the Neighborhood label, the novelty-sounding 1972 number one "Brand New Key" (often referred to as "The Roller Skate Song"). "Brand New Key" sold over three million copies worldwide and was featured in the 1997 movie Boogie Nights. See acast.com/privacy for privacy and opt-out information.

Melanie is a ICON and she is so fabulous. She has been in the music industry for a long time. She definitely knows the entertainment world. Melanie landed in the New York City music and radio scene in the late 1960's. Her first single, Beautiful People immediately became a turntable hit. Her first tour began with an impressive 40-day run of shows at Paris'world-famous L'Olympia Theater at the invitation of Bruno Coquatrix. In the years to come, she would entertain millions: at an Aquarian Exposition (the 1969 Woodstock Music Festival), at Carnegie Hall, the Isle of Wight and Glastonbury music festivals, the Sydney Opera House, the South Korean DMZ, the Theatre Royal Drury Lane, the Royal Albert Hall, and many many more theatres, halls, and beloved music clubs around the globe. Melanie launched Neighborhood Records, making her the first american woman to open a mainstream record label, she has recorded over 20 chart hits and many have been re-recorded. Melanie received an Emmy after composing lyrics for the theme song of the hit television series Beauty and the Beast. “What Have They Done To My Song Ma” was re-recorded by Ray Charles with the Count Basie Band. Nina Simone delivered a remarkable rendition as well. “(Lay Down) Candles in the Rain” was re-recorded by Mott the Hoople on their 1971 album Wildlife. Meredith Brooks and Queen Latifah later recorded the anthem. “Some Say (I Got Devil)”was re- recorded by Smith's frontman Morrissey. These are only a few of the many performers who have re-recorded Melanie's works. She has always known her calling in life was to entertain. Audiences have welcomed her to the stage for more than fifty years, and she continues to perform today. FOLK MUSIC ICON NOMINATED FOR LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD It is 1 am on Saturday August 16th, 1969 and Melanie Safka, a folk singer at the tender age of 22 years old sits herself on a chair front and centre on the stage of the Woodstock Music Festival, to perform songs echoing love, beauty and freedom. Following a one-hour performance by Ravi Shankar, Melanie plays her music in front of 500,000 flower children, this would only be one precious moment in her music career. Three years and one recording contract later, Melanie Safka would ultimately record two singles that would take her into the mainstream music scene, “Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)”, which would reach number six on Billboard and “Brand New Key”, which would become number one on the Billboard Hot 100 and become an international bestselling single reaching No. 1 in Canada and Australia and No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart. Who knew that over 50 years later, Melanie's trademark of success and songs would still be relevant and vital to society, she certainly could never have imagined that! Roll forward to 2021 and Ms. Safka's journey continues. The influential singer-songwriter's legacy now moves forward as she has been nominated for a Lifetime Achievement Award given by Folk Alliance International in conjunction with the 2021 International Folk Music Awards. I didn't archive last weeks episode cuz I revealed something I'm working on too soon (listen live folks). This episode opens wit a crank call to a possible car repair scam and closes with a creep version of "Brand New Key". In between we tackled serious and silly subjects and I really really love this episode of Art Star Scene radio on Radio Free Brooklyn!!! Many thanks to co-hosts Kathryn Dunn and Juno Tempest and our guests Will Hasty and Eli Raston for being open and bringing fun!!!

Proving that the black audience will take, a non 'super black' exploitation movie seriously. 31. QUESTION: What pops out for you? 32. Socio-political (1st major shift to a new direction, political power) 33. Shirley Anita Chisholm, (@ 47): politician, educator, and author of "Unbought and Unbossed! -1970 autobiographies. 34. in 1972, she became the first black person EVER to run for POTUS AND the first woman to run for the Democrats. 35. Already, in 1968, she was the first black woman elected to Congress. 36. Her campaign was underfunded, dismissed as a symbolic, & basically ignored by the power structure. 37. And she was not instantly a heroine for black people. 38. Of course, black male colleagues showed little love: "When I ran for the Congress, when I ran for president, I met more discrimination as a woman than for being black. Men are men.... They think I am trying to take power from them. The black man must step 39. forward, but that doesn't mean the black woman must step back." 40. QUESTION: Is this the real reason more black women haven't run? (only other black woman was Carol Moseley Braun from Il in 2004) 41. About her legacy, she said, “I want to be remembered as a woman … who dared to be a catalyst of change.” (Obama?) 42. Famous Quotes: 43. "Tremendous amounts of talent are lost to our society just because that talent wears a skirt." 44. "The emotional, sexual, and psychological stereotyping of females begins when the doctor says, 'It's a girl'." 45. "In the end, anti-black, anti-female, and all forms of discrimination are equivalent to the same thing - anti-humanism." 46. Conclusion: In our lifetime we saw THE MOST successful path for black advancement. Politics. Only 36 years from Shirley to Obama. 47. Shirley Chisholm was an underappreciated legend and icon. 48. Other Comments? 49. Meanwhile...the Black Power Movement is falling apart! (2nd major shift) 50. 1971-1972 the Panthers split into different camps. Huey vs Eldrigdge 51. They went "Hatfield vs McCoy" and started retaliatory assassinations. 52. H. Rap Brown (@ 29), is the latest high-profile BPM figure to fall. 53. Others include: Angela Davis, Assata Shakur, Elaine Brown, Eldridge Cleaver, Fred Hampton, Huey P. Newton, Stokely Carmichael, and Bobby Seale 54. H Rap Brown sentenced for an attack on a New York City bar?!?! 55. Currently serving a life sentence for murder after shooting of two Sheriff's deputies in 2000. 56. He was known for taking over SNCC after Stokely and his autobiography, Die Nigger Die! 57. Probably most famous for saying, "violence is as American as cherry pie” -and- "If America don't come around, we're gonna burn it down." 58. QUESTION: Was the decline of the BPM more internal (reliance on the gun and violence), external (black people lost interest) -OR- did black people choose to go the "integration" route? 59. Conclusion: The BPM had a great message: Pride, Self-reliance, and education. But, I think they were too extreme. 60. Other Comments: 61. Key Artist - Diana Ross (@28): Singer, songwriter, actress, and record producer. Born and raised in Detroit. 76. Became famous as the lead singer the Supremes, the best charting girl group in history. With twelve number-one hit singles. ("Where Did Our Love Go", "Baby Love", "Come See About Me", "Stop! In the Name of Love", "You Can't Hurry Love", "You Keep Me 77. Hangin' On", "Love Child", and "Someday We'll Be Together", etc...) 78. The movie dream girls was inspired by the group 79. She also did a few big films: Lady Sings the Blues, Mahogany, The Wiz, etc... 80. Question: Here's my problem with The Boss. Mary Wilson was the heart and soul of the Supremes. Florence Ballard was the best singer. Diana was what? 81. Conclusion: The Supremes were deliberately glamorous, because Gordy wanted all of Motown to be crossover artists. Beyonce has real game, I'm not convinced Diana wasn't just hyped up. 82. Other Comments: 83. Key Artist - Al Green (@26): singer, songwriter and record produce. Born in AR, grew up in Michigan, discovered in Memphis. 84. Kicked out of the house when his very religious daddy caught him listening to Jackie Wilson. 85. Quote: "I also listened to Mahalia Jackson, all the great gospel singers. But the most important music to me was those hip-shaking’ boys: Wilson Pickett and Elvis Presley. I just loved Elvis Presley. Whatever he got, I went out and bought." 86. Started out in 1967, flashed in 1971 with the album, "Al Green Gets Next to You", PEAKED in 1972 with 2 albums - "Let's Stay Together" & "I'm Still in Love with You", and capped 1973 with the lp "Call Me", a critically acclaimed "Masterpiece!" 87. Basically, everything we love about Al was dropped in that 3-year window. 88. 1974 he was born again 89. Soon after that his "girlfriend" dumped boiling grits on him in the bathtub before shooting and killing herself. (with his gun!?) 90. By 1976, he was ready to go gospel. 91. His longtime producer, Willie Mitchell (the guy who discovered him and crafted his music), passed on doing gospel music. (Bounced check story) 92. 1977, he dropped "The Belle Album", his 12th. Rolling Stone magazine said, "We may someday look back on The Belle Album as Al Green’s best" 93. Question: Just an observation really. This is the 3rd major shift in 1972. Al didn't make political or activist music. Some said he was the last great "Soul Man". In 1971 Marvin asked, what's going on. During 1972, in the middle of war protests, Watergate, an 94. election, civil rights protests, the Panthers shooting up the streets, Al Green made LOVE ok again. 95. Other Comments: 96. Starring: Diana Ross (@28), Billy Dee Williams (@35), Richard Pryor (@32) 100. Blacula: important because it was a successful black horror film 101. Buck and the Preacher: important for casting blacks as leads in a western and was the first film Sidney Poitier directed 102. Super Fly: 4th Major shift (The streets are talking) 103. Priest is done with the clothes, the cars, the drugs, the money, and the white women. 104. But, his partner, Eddie isn’t. 105. Quote (Eddie talking to Priest): "You're gonna give all this up? 8-Track Stereo, color T.V. in every room, and can snort a half a piece of dope everyday? That's the American Dream, nigga! Well, ain't it? Ain't it?" 106. Curtis Mayfield (@30) wrote and produced the AMAZING soundtrack. 107. Starring: Ron O’Neal (@35), Carl Lee (@46), Sheila Frazier (@24) 108. At the time of its release, lots of black folks didn't like what Super Fly was representing. 109. Quote from the Hollywood NAACP branch: “we must insist that our children are not exposed to a steady diet of so-called black movies that glorify black males as pimps, dope pushers, gangsters, and super males.” 110. The filmmakers (White producer / black director) say they wanted to show the negative and empty aspects of the drug subculture. 111. Regardless, Super Fly landed BIG TIME with the "post-Civil Rights" generation. 112. They thought Eddie spoke the gospel. 113. Quote (Eddie talking to Priest): " I know it's a rotten game, but it's the only one The Man left us to play. That's the stone, cold truth." 114. Question: Ultimately, what is the legacy of Superfly? 115. Conclusion: I really enjoyed the movie. However, it blatantly dismissed the BPM, and spoke directly to the criminal elements in the black community. This movie, along with the "Urban" writers, Donald Goines and Iceberg Slim, helped spawn a generation 116. of criminals. That can't be a good thing. 117. Other comments: 118. Theme music by Quincy Jones (@39) 123. Starring: Redd Foxx (@50), and Demond Wilson (@26) 124. Foxx was born in St. Louis, raised in Chicago, and ran the streets with pre-Muslim Malcolm X back in the day. 125. He came up performing raunchy comedy and developed a cult following in the 50's and 60's. 126. In 1970 he flashed in the comedy movie "Cotton Comes to Harlem" and the producer of All in the Family hit him up. 127. Question: Is Lamont crazy? Quote: "MLK left black people hooked on economic dependence and Sanford and Son taught entrepreneurship" 128. Conclusion: Undeniably funny. Redd had the respect and help from some of the best young comics in the business, black and white. Classic! 129. Other Comments: 130. Sep - Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids (8 seasons) 131. Fat Albert first popped up in 1967 during Cosby's stand-up comedy routine "Buck Buck," 132. Starring: Bill Cosby (@35) 133. Born and raised in Philly. High school drop-out. Got his G.E.D. and went to Temple Univ. on a scholarship. While bartending, he discovered his comedy talent. 134. He dropped out of college and mastered crossover comedy in the early sixties. 135. In 1965 he broke out in the hit tv series I-Spy and by 1970 he was America's top Black comic. 136. He went back to college in 1970 and got involved with PBS and the Electric Company. 137. During this time, he cooked up "Fat Albert and the Cosby Kids" 138. It was based on his childhood friends and every show had an educational lesson in it. 139. A lot of times the crew would end the show playing a song in the neighborhood junkyard. 140. Question: Frankly, did the sex scandal undermine his whole career? 141. Conclusion: I used to really like Bill. 142. Other comments: 143. Vote: Television, ___________________________________ 144. Vote: 1972 Biggest Shadow, __________________________

Join us this week as we welcome Garage Rock-Country, Americana, Singer-Songwriter and Actress, Ariana Hodes. For most hopeful young actresses, it’s a long, hard stretch of highway between Concord, New Hampshire and Beverly Hills, but Ariana Hodes made the journey seem easy. Born into a musical family, performing has always been in her blood. She was always around show business and started performing in community theater plays and musicals when she was around 13. It wasn’t long before Hollywood started taking notice and this dark haired beauty began to rack up an impressive list of stage and screen credits, but Ariana wanted more. In early 2014, she decided it was time to spread her wings and return to her musical roots. With mentoring and guidance from old family friend, Mike Borchetta, and his wife, Martha, Ariana entered a recording studio. Her first single, a soulful, bouncy cover of Melanie’s seventies mega hit “Brand New Key”. Ariana recently released her new EP "Last Night's Makeup" and is available at digital outlets now. In a nutshell, she’s a multi-talented singer/songwriter/dancer with Shakespearean theater training who plays guitar, piano, loves animals, sports and the Beatles. In other words, Ariana Hodes is a force to be reckoned with. We will talk to Ariana Hodes about her upcoming schedule, get a behind their scenes look at her music, feature her latest songs, and ask her to share her message for the troops. Please be sure to visit Ariana Hodes at http://www.arianahodes.com/ and spread the word. Fans are welcome to call in and speak live with her during the show (718) 766-4193. As always we will give shout outs to our deployed military listeners. Be sure to join us, 7/24/2016 at 4 PM EDT! Our message to the troops: WE do what we do, because YOU do what you do.
Today, Matt welcomes the lead singer and bassist for The Dollyrots, Kelly Ogden. The Dollyrots' newest album is a live album called Family Vacation: Live From Los Angeles, released alongside a DVD of the same name! The album is essentially a live greatest hits of the band's 16-year long career. Hear Kelly and Matt chat about how the band has evolved over the years and where it's headed in the future. She chats about her life as a rock n' roll mom, and how that's affected her writing, touring, and especially scheduling. She also chats about why the band decided to release a live album instead of a new LP, why they included the cover of "Brand New Key", and what that song meant to Kelly specifically. Continue reading

Best known for her signature songs, "Brand New Key" and the anthemic "Lay Down (Candles In The Rain)", Melanie got her big break at the original Woodstock festival. In this interview, we talk about her Woodstock experience, as well as the stories behind her hit songs and her musical career, which began when she went to the wrong Brill Building audition studio!
