The #1 way you can support The Troubadour is by visiting our Patreon page Carly and I were thrilled to have Josh Crutchmer back on the show to talk about his 3rd and latest book, Red Dirt Unplugged. Along with working a day job for a little ol publication called the New York Times, native Okie and Red Dirt Music Fan, Josh Crutchmer, is a journalist who's played a significant role in getting recognition for the artists and the music we all dig for years now. For example, Josh just spent an entire year basically embedded with Wyatt Flores as he rides a very hot streak into the fall.  He was in the studio with him as he recorded his latest album. Josh has also been spending a lot of time with The Great Divide as they capped their comeback this year with some Texas Music honors as well as their Opry debut in July and their Ryman debut (opening for Wyatt) coming in December! Over the past year, Josh has also had his articles published in Rolling stone featuring artists like Flatland Calvary, Wade Bowen, Dylan Gossett, Koe Wetzel, American Aquarium, Cody Canada, Reckless Kelly, Muscadine Bloodline, Dasha, Shane Smith, Old 97s and Charles Wesley Godwin. So, let's just say Josh has his pulse on the scene and the exciting time we're all experiencing in our favorite genre of original music.  We were thrilled to have him on the show and we can't recommend his book highly enough! Check out Josh's new book here: “REDDIRT UNPLUGGED”   Josh's Instagram Josh's latest article in Rolling Stone featuring Reckless Kelly   BUY THE BOOK HERE   VIDEO Links: Wyatt Flores Encore in Denver   We're also excited to say that we are now an affiliate for Sweetwater.  So, the next time you need any new strings, picks, microphones, recording gear, etc. make sure to use this link!

Red Dirt Pioneer Cody Canada Visits The Load Out

The Load Out Music Podcast

Play Episode Listen Later Jul 17, 2023 40:59

Let's start here. Cody Canada—our latest guest on The Load Out Music Podcast—is many things but he is most certainly not some radio DJ in Canada, in the event you were curious.  No, he's a pioneering figure in red dirt music and one of the more respected musicians in songwriting circles today. But many casual music fans might be unfamiliar with his name, instead knowing his work from the legendary band that he founded and led from 1994 – 2010: Cross Canadian Ragweed.  For those unfamiliar with red dirt music, it's a genre stuck between country and rock-and-roll named for the color of the Oklahoma soil. It has featured acts such as Jason Boland & the Stragglers, Stoney Larue, Charlie Robison, the Turnpike Troubadours, and the Randy Rogers Band—but has also extended to the likes of Waylon Jennings, Willie Nelson, Steve Earle, Ray Wylie Hubbard and those who have built the Texas country-rock scene.  Canada got hooked on music when he attended a George Strait show while living in Texas as a kid. The next day he asked his parents for a guitar and it was on. In his teen years, Canada was insulated, a loner, he freely admits he didn't have many friends. His family then relocated to Yukon, Oklahoma, and his obsession with the regional outlaw country music and the Seattle sounds of Nirvana and Pearl Jam only deepened.  Music became his thing—his only thing—and in 1994, Canada put together a band with Matt Weidemann (bass), Grady Cross (guitar), and Randy Ragsdale (percussion). Cross Canadian Ragweed was born and one of their first gigs was playing a on a glorious trailer on “Czech Day” in Yukon—where they played for six hours. The band would move to Stillwater, Oklahoma, and in 1998 put out its first album, Carney. But it wasn't until Ragweed's 2002 self-titled album featuring Canada's song “17” that the band broke through. Then things really went next level in 2004 with the album Soul Gravy. It debuted at number five on Billboard's country charts—despite Canada wanting to be as far from Nashville country as he possibly can to this day—and featured the hit songs “Sick and Tired” with Lee Ann Womack and “Alabama.”  But like happens in most bands, tensions rose in Ragweed—a topic Canada does not shy away from—and the band dissolved in 2010.  In 2011, Canada and bassist Jeremy Plato formed Cody Canada & the Departed, releasing the album This Is Indian Land, a collection of covers written by Oklahoma songwriters. The band ultimately minimized to simply, The Departed, and over the past decade, Canada has moved forward with the band as well as on solo projects, writing music and reaping the rewards of a legacy he's built over 30 years. In 2020, MusicFest, the esteemed festival in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, paid tribute to Canada with live recorded performances from his songwriting peers, releasing the album The Years: A MusicFest Tribute to Cody Canada. Ragweed also released the reboot of “Soul Gravy” in 2022. Womack returned to sing on the new version along with performances from some key musicians who helped shape the original album including Randy Rogers and Ray Wiley Hubbard. And just recently, Canada joined longtime friends Micky and Gary Braun (of Micky and the Motorcars) on the “Acoustic Healing Tour.”  All along, in spite of being a pioneer in red dirt music, family remains the bedrock of Canada's life. He and his wife Shannon lead a School of Rock in their hometown of New Braunfels, Texas, where they are raising their children Dierks Cobain Canada (named for friend Kierks Bentley and Nirvana's Kurt Cobain) and Willy Vedder Canada (named for Willy Braun of the band Reckless Kelly and Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder).   So, sit back for a great conversation on The Load Out Music Podcast with an incredibly accomplished musician and fascinating character in Cody Canada.

There's a reason kids in small towns listen to songs about getting out. If you roll up 59 North outside of Houston, past all the suburbs and the strip malls, you'll eventually hit Splendora, TX. It was in this blink-and-you'll-miss-it-town where Jeff Canada first picked up the guitar, playing alongside his Grandpa and Uncle. After sidelining his dream for ten years to raise a family, Canada picked his guitar back up and ventured into the Houston cover scene, quickly carving out a niche with his unapologetic stage antics, biting comedy, and unmatched work ethic. An audience of rabid regulars followed, but it wasn't until 2018 that he finally found the voice he'd been struggling to get out in all those years of covering other people. It was a hell of a year. His marriage ended, followed by the death of his mother, and something finally cracked in the 6'3” Splendora boys otherwise tough exterior. “I wan ted to write a real, honest record,” Canada says. “Every line on paper is a line on my face, things I've lived. I could not have written this album ten, or even five years ago.”Those songs would become Wishin' Well, his first solo LP, and the foundation for an entirely new iteration of Jeff Canada as both a performer and a human being. This version isn't running from anything. “I took a long hard look in the mirror and realized that it was mostly because of my own decisions,” he says. And that self-awareness explains why he can sin about the darkest moments in his life with a spark in his eye. It also explains why he's since shared the stage with Stoney Larue, Chad Prather, Shane Smith and the Saints, Kevin Fowler, Cody Canada, Kody West, and sold out the legendary Texas listening room, Dosey Doe on his solo first appearance. This is episode may or may not contain adult content such as strong language, references to smoking, alcohol, sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll. Ep. 28: The Continuing Echo of Tom Petty Lives Through Mike Campbell -  and Many Others

The continuing story of the the echoing Influence of Tom Petty...and how Mike Campbell has taken that influence and made some magic. I hear lots of bands than dig for that bit of Petty magic within their sound. The Wild Feathers.  American Aquarium. Turnpike Troubadours. Eddie Vedder. Cody Canada. Band of Heathens.  Petty left us too early.  His influence has stayed.  I thought it would but you never know.  Some artists just have louder echoes.    And now, Heartbeakers guitarist and his band, Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs, have an album out  - released in early 2022 called External Combustion. Petty fans should rejoice.  It rocks, in a Petty and the Heartbreakers way.  A good way - with the echoes of the sounds of Torpedoes and Wildflowers.  People hear the Petty songs and think they're basic. Why?  Hell, Petty songs and  singles were on the radio in a time when radio was king and queen and prince. They got your soul, one hit at a time.  When I go to the radio or a Spotify playlist that a fragment of melody, line of lyrics, or chord change that will be a line back to something from Petty - his influence - from a generation of rock and pop stars that were raised on his music.  Mike Campbell and the Dirty Knobs. They have a second album. It's pretty damn good. Mike has found his voice. It is the voice that helped blend with Tom's voice for 40 years and it is evident that he was a huge piece of that sound, and the two growing up and writing songs for all those years gave each a part of each other's musical soul.  On External Combustion - his voice is stronger. Crisper.  Tweaked a tiny bit higher in the mix.  It works. We listen to Petty's influence in the album, and with other music too.  It's a good sound.  A sound that deserves to live on. Escuchar audio

The Years: A Musicfest Tribute to Cody Canada and the Music of Cross Canadian Ragweed. On this episode of Chasing the Blues Podcast (Season 2/Episode 6) Tom catches up with guitarist Seth James, who makes his second appearance on the podcast. About Seth James: Authenticity and originality don’t always make for the most compatible bedfellows. Indeed, paying reverence to one’s roots sometimes moots the possibility of finding contemporary credence. Happily though, in the case of the Texas born and bred singer/songwriter Seth James, all those elements find equal footing. That’s especially evident with the release of Good Life, James’ new album, a rugged and unabashedly assertive blend of blues, country, roots, rock, and Americana. From the sassy strut of opening track “Brother” and the loping rhythms of the catchy and danceable “That’s How You Do It,” to the soulful sentiment of “Little Angel” and the assertive strains of “The Time I Love the Most,” the twelve song set runs a gamut of heartfelt emotion filtered through unfaltering conviction and homespun appeal. Produced and mixed by Kevin McKendree (Little Richard, Etta James, Sean Chambers), and recorded at The Rock House in Franklin, Tennessee, Good Life resonates with an honesty and integrity that could have only been spawned by someone who’s known the toils and triumphs spawned in America’s heartland. James sums up those sentiments in the title track itself. Written with Kevin McKendree and Bob Britt, the song represents the emotion imbued in the album overall. “It was important to me that this album had an overall positive feel,” James explains. “I always found it easy to be dark and brooding, but using happiness is a trick. Of course, it’s pretty easy to write happy when you’re writing with two of your heroes like Kevin and Bob are to me. “This song is a good representation of where I’m at now and where I wanna stay.” On the other hand, the song “I’m Coming Home“ is the album’s oldest entry. It was also written with McKendree. “We wrote it almost 10 years ago,” James recalls. “From that day forward, we both knew we wanted to make an album together. It just took a while for the pieces to fall in place. However, I suspect that anyone who has to travel for living will find a home with this song.” Likewise, James cites the track “Third Generation” as the most personal song of the set. He notes that it was written during an intense period of anger and frustration, and that it was important for him to express those emotions and bring them to the fore. “In the place that I grew up, it’s very common to find that the later generations who inherit the family ranches typically do not share the same work ethic and values of their forefathers,” James says. “Very often, they squabble and argue and ultimately sell off what it took generations to build. This song allowed me to put my finger in those people’s faces. It’s not about the land as much as it is about the kind of person which that lifestyle produces. I don’t believe this world can afford to lose people who share that kind of dedication.”In fact, James knows those values all too well. Born in Fort Worth and raised in the ranch country of West Texas, he comes from a family who knew the rewards that come from drive, determination and hard work. His grandfather was a honky tonk piano player who performed as Tooter Boatman and the Chaparrals in any number of clubs, juke joints and roadhouses in the 40's and 50's. His other grandfather was a Texas Ranger. His father, Tom Moorhouse, founded the Moorhouse Ranch and imbued in his son the values spawned from western tradition. “Growing up, I spent the majority of my life on a horse,” James recalls. “It was the kind of ranch where we would do things the old-fashioned way, whether it was herding the cattle, bringing out the chuckwagon to feed the cowboys, or camping on the trail under the stars. To this day I still prefer to sleep on the ground.” Not surprisingly then, the romantic road stories shared by his forebears had an important influence of James’s decision to pursue his passion. Early on, he taught himself to play guitar, mostly by learning the songs of Lightning Hopkins, Freddy King and Creedence Clearwater Revival. “Years later in college, I had a regular gig at a juke joint called the Big Wheel in Navasota, Texas where Lightning and Mance Lipscomb spent many years,” he remembers. “It was fun to play for their family members and to hear stories from their relatives’ first-hand accounts.” In 1996 Seth got his first Fender Stratocaster and quickly discovered the sheer power and expression that’s possible by playing an electric guitar. “As a young man, I was drawn to the music that was coming out of Lubbock and Fort Worth,” he recalls. “The early influences of Joe Ely, Delbert McClinton, Stephen Bruton, and Doyle Bramhall Sr. ultimately led me too many of the musicians that impacted me later on, such as Frankie Miller and Freddie King.” Over the course of his career, James has had the opportunity to share the stage with many of his heroes, among them, Percy Sledge, Little Feat, Delbert McClinton, Buddy Guy, Tab Benoit, ZZ Top, Little Feat, Lee Roy Parnell, Leon Russell, and Billy Joe Shaver. He’s released three solo albums, most notably 2009’s critically acclaimed effort That Kind of Man. In 2010, he joined forces with Cody Canada and formed The Departed, with whom he spent three years and recorded two albums. Ultimately, he opted to return to his roots and his primary passion, which was to fashion a sound infused with the blues. With Good Life, he’s sums up his satisfaction succinctly.“I never made the decision to be a musician,” James insists. “I just started doing what I loved and it got out of hand. I’ve been doing it ever since.”The results speak for themselves.Lee Zimmerman 2019 http://www.SethJames.comhttp://www.TomTheSuitForst.comhttp://www.ChasingtheBluesPodcast.com

Americana, for all intensive purposes, is roots based music. Sounds, songs, and stories are as much a part of the region as they are apart of the artist. Although the Americana generally adopts regional sounds and sub-genres and provides a platform with a wider national and international reach, we have to wonder what we as listeners might be losing when not defining a song or a band by where it/they comes from. Geographically where does Americana start and better yet.. where does it end?  Cody Canada, formerly of "Cross Canadian Ragweed" and currently of his new band Cody Canada & The Departed"- is a poster-child for the sub-genre known as Red Dirt Country. A form of music developed between Oklahoma and Texas that generally mixes rock and roll-based sound with country-style songwriting. With a style of music that's pretty well-defined as such, does it count as Americana? On Americana Podcast: The 51st State, Canada discusses regionality, influences and his newest work in music education on the first ever live episode- recorded at Gruene Hall in New Braunfels, TX.

THE TROUBADOUR PODCAST - The Premier Red Dirt, Texas Country and Independent Music Podcast

At the ripe old age of twenty-six, Texas and Americana Music Rock and Roller, Austin Meade, is carving out his own niche in the independent music scene. Austin's latest record, "Waves" has all the vibe, feel and look of 1970s, all the way down to the look of the front-man.   Despite his relatively young age, Austin has four records under his belt and is quickly solidifying himself as an authentic artist that's here to stay. In this interview we learn how Austin's father, a Baptist preacher, was a fan of some 70's greats including Styx and .38 Special which bled over into Austin's taste in music and is partially responsible for the direction he's taken with his own music. While attending college in College Station, Texas, Austin was introduced to Texas Country and Red Dirt Music along with the artists making up the genre.  For a love of music, drums and guitar, Austin soon found himself trying to subtly introduce himself to folks like William Clark Green, Randy Rogers and Cross Canadian Ragweed frontman, Cody Canada. By developing these relationships with these type of artists, Austin has gained the respect of many of his peers in the music business; so much so that Austin now teaches guitar for Cody Canada at the local School of Rock for youngsters. We expect to see great things in the future out of this genuine, hard-working rocker.   Make sure and check out his new album "Waves" by visiting www.austinmeade.com   www.thetroubadourpodcast.com CHECK OUT THE TROUBADOUR ON THESE PLATFORMS: iTunes Stitcher Spotify

December 8th, 2004, I was living in Stillwater, Oklahoma when I heard the news that Darrell Abbott had been shot on stage in Columbus, OH while performing with Damageplan. I have been a Pantera & Darrell Abbott fan for as long as I can remember. Vulgar Display of Power was the first Pantera record I ever purchased & I was hooked from then on. To me, there was no one like Darrell, he was the consummate performer as well as being life of the party, & a really friendly person. I’ve always wanted to have a discussion with Oklahoma musicians about the influence that Dime had on them. I’ve sat down with Provo from Everybody Panic, Vinny from Trainreck, Zain from Locust Grove, Cameron Conyer from the Far Beyond The Grave Pantera Tribtue, and Cody Canada from The Departed even called in to talk about the Cross Canadian Ragweed song “Dimebag” that he co-wrote with Mike McClure. If you are a Pantera fan at all, you will enjoy hearing the stories from these Oklahoma Musicians… - Jay Ramone
